I just saw that there are already 43 messages to this thread. So it has been
quite a popular topic. I am writing this message to you without reading the
other answers first. Then I will see how close my answer is to everyone else's.
At least for me this app has been invaluable and definitely worth the cost. I
use it to read my mail. That's probably the most thing I have used it for. I
can quickly go through envelopes which arrived daily and if they are spam I can
return them, or if they are addressed to someone else I can return them. If
they are addressed to me I can keep them and once I go through the rest of the
mail I can later open the ones I capped and quickly figure out what, if
anything important they have to say. Additionally I have used this app to help
me with my work. If I am working with someone's computer and speech doesn't
come up, I can take a picture of the monitor and read whatever error message
might be there. Another instance is the computer had booted up and it was at
the desk top but the screen reader was not coming on. Taking a picture of the
screen told me that the computer was definitely at the desk top with no error.
So this told me that things were okay, and gave me a better direction as to
which kind of troubleshooting I should try first.another time I was watching TV
and the channel kept cutting out. On a whim I took a picture of the TV screen
while I was sitting almost 5 feet away at my couch. It successfully read me the
error message that came up on the TV screen.you can also use this app if you
were out and about and need to take pictures of certain signs. Keep in mind
that it will read text and not translate anything that has to do with pictures.
It will also not do well if you take a picture of something with really large
and fancy fonts, like the front of certain grocery store items.however with the
same grocery store items, like cooking instructions, it will do very well. So
if you can't remember how much oil to put in those brownies, this Apple
definitely help you. There are several other good uses, but these are mainly
the ones that I have used this app for.

Hi,

I just checked out the Urban Spoon and found out that the diner which is
about six blocks North West of my current location has it's menu on that
app. This makes me very happy as I once was able to walk to that diner and
enjoyed doing so every once in a while. I no longer enjoy that due to the
six lane highways that crisscross the place where I live and we have the
distinction of living in the second highest pedestrian accident place in the
State, sad face! But for the Greek omelet I just saw I'm seriously thinking
of giving it one more try, laughs!

Thanks for giving me another tool for my toolbox. Smile!

There is another app called Urban Spoon, which I am not sure if it is
one or two words. Also not sure on the cost but I think it is free. It
offers the ability to look up menus of restaurants in your area or

RE: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-08 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I am sitting here beside a temporary loan of a Pearl and Open Book neither
of which will be mine when I relocate. Neither is it convenient when
combined with the 17 inch acer it is currently connected to in a dining
situation. However, since the Acer is only a spare anyway, it is convenient
as a tool for reading mail. However, I am anxious to try the KNFB Reader on
the menus of an HDTV such as the annoying sixty inch model that currently
sits in my temporary residence and has been sitting there for about eleven
months and is still not completely configured to its maximum user comfort. I
have heard that the reader app may be helpful in that regard.

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

Greetings. The KNFB Reader app is on my to-buy list later this month,
around that holiday where we exchange gifts and such. Anyway, another
way to get around the cost is to tell your friends and family that you
are collecting gift cards. Even if I get several gift cars that only
add up to $50, my cost of the app will be cut in half. Of course, if I
get gift cards that add up to the entire cost of the app then that
would be even better. Also, should I fall short in my gift card pile,
I have thought about cashing in my credit card's cash back option,
which currently sits at around $86.

Another option for reading restaurant menus is to see if the
restaurant has an app. Of those that do, they often have their menus
within the app. I got the Steak 'N Shake app not long ago and found
the whole menu, divided up into different categories, and which listed
product information and pricing if I went down far enough.

As mentioned before, not all menus will scan well. I was talking with
my wife this weekend about scanning menus, and I mentioned that
perhaps I can scan the menu, save the file on my phone, and build up a
collection of menus for restaurants we go to regularly. This would
save time when deciding what to get since I would already be familiar
with the menu. And, in the event that the menu I have previously
scanned was not up to date with the current menu, I could scan the
menu at the restaurant and update the file.

I have a coworker that has the KNFB Reader app. He is a blind O&M
instructor and is not as technical. Anyway, he was telling me that he
has used the app to scan the questions and answers that pop up on the
game show Family Fued, and the app recognized them perfectly from his
TV's screen.

If people are willing to read a menu to you, they should realize that you're
not going to make an immediate decision after hearing all of the choices,
any more than they would read a menu and immediately choose.

As for using the KNFB reader to read a menu, my first thought would be that
this can be done whenever you get the chance, and you can save the created
file for later use, provided there is another way to access the menu for
making a choice in a timely manner.

Hi,

This is a timely topic I have had to deal with since making the transition from
a high partial to a very low vision almost totally blind individual between
2007 and present. My iPhone 5S has become one of my favorite tools along with
my I D Mate Quest. At first my rather large and over-inflated sense of pride
hated the idea of needing help with menus at a restaurant as I was always the
one who read the entire menu for all the other “blind” people at the table,
laughs! Now I either depend on AllMenus or let the sighted dude tell me or look
it up online whichever is faster or most efficient or most interesting or
entertaining or a combination of the above. I am still saving for the KNFB
Reader but I do know someone who has it and it does drive me absolutely batty
when in a public place and 30 minutes later I can still hear 600 words per hour
gibberish going on and everyone else including me has already moved on to
something else a half hour ago.

On another list, not related to phones, we were discussing the idea that
sometimes we as blind people need to have more than one tool in the toolbox.
For example AllMenus, KNFB Reader, someone mentioned 4Square which I don’t use
but that is great if someone uses that. And I am sure there are others. Also
while physically there some places have Braille menus. I like to look up the
Menus online when possible and of course there are always specials that day
they will tell you about if you ask.

Here’s a silly question? Does the KNFB reader read Chinese? Oh never mind most
of those menus are in English anyway, laughing Lots!

Eden I must disagree with you. If your family can read and don't have
a problem reading a menu for you, I think that they will find it
annoying having to wait for you to make a decision long after they
have read the menu.

RE: reading menus with the KNFB reader - Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-08 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

This is a timely topic I have had to deal with since making the transition
from a high partial to a very low vision almost totally blind individual
between 2007 and present. My iPhone 5S has become one of my favorite tools
along with my I D Mate Quest. At first my rather large and over-inflated
sense of pride hated the idea of needing help with menus at a restaurant as
I was always the one who read the entire menu for all the other "blind"
people at the table, laughs! Now I either depend on AllMenus or let the
sighted dude tell me or look it up online whichever is faster or most
efficient or most interesting or entertaining or a combination of the above.
I am still saving for the KNFB Reader but I do know someone who has it and
it does drive me absolutely batty when in a public place and 30 minutes
later I can still hear 600 words per hour gibberish going on and everyone
else including me has already moved on to something else a half hour ago.

On another list, not related to phones, we were discussing the idea that
sometimes we as blind people need to have more than one tool in the toolbox.
For example AllMenus, KNFB Reader, someone mentioned 4Square which I don't
use but that is great if someone uses that. And I am sure there are others.
Also while physically there some places have Braille menus. I like to look
up the Menus online when possible and of course there are always specials
that day they will tell you about if you ask.

Here's a silly question? Does the KNFB reader read Chinese? Oh never mind
most of those menus are in English anyway, laughing Lots!

I fully agree with your message below. Being independent is one thing, but
being practical is another thing. If people can find the right balance between
practicality and independence then that is the best for everyone. For example,
just because I can do something a certain way doesn't mean it's always the best
way to do that certain way. If I am with someone and they have offered to help
me go over the menu, it's going to be more time efficient to let that happen
that way instead of me taking a picture of the menu of each page and then
deciding what I want after they have already decided 10 minutes ago. To me
being independent is figuring out the most practical and efficient way of
getting the job done.

Andy, I fully agree with you on this. While this app might be very successful
at reading certain menus at a restaurant, I have not found a very practical to
do so. I would also prefer to look at the restaurant menu ahead of time using
other apps like foursquare or all menus, or while at the restaurant, reading
their braille menu if they have one.

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-08 Thread Raul A. Gallegos

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-07 Thread Kelly Pierce
I don’t need this app immediately. It still has some bugs that have
not yet been quashed. I have decided to wait to learn if another
company will be introducing another similar app at CSUN in March. If
someone else could deliver the quality and usability of the KNFB
Reader along with the ability to port business cards into contacts,
scan bar codes and display full product information as well as scan
and read out the entire text of a QR code, the other company would
have an ideal package of services to deliver on the app. The
limitation of the KNFB Reader is that it doesn’t do other scanning
chores and it has trouble saving to a cloud based storage system in a
widely used document format.

I did see this mentioned once, but as a reminder, Blind Square also has
restaurant menus for many places. It is not the entire menu, but generally
is the price, the dish's title on a line and a one-line description. I guess
they source this from Four Square?

Are we living in good times or what!

Hi Joe,

The app is all access menus. This app can search by name, scan logos to
access business information, scan qr codes, automotive businesses ,
restaurants , entertainment, health related businesses, shopping, travel
related businesses , follow all access menus on twitter, visit all access on
the web, and review all access on the app store.

I just downloaded this app the other day and I decided to play around with
the app. For example I doubled tapped on the search by name and then theirs
a text field I doubled tapp on and the built in keyboard popped up and then
I typed in for example Bob Evans and tapped on the search button and many
different Bob Evans Restaurants showed up around 42 I think with the
different locations of each restaurant. Then I doubled tapped on the Bob
Evans location I wanted and it took me to another screen.

On this screen for Bob Evans theirs 5 options you can choose from and they
are menu, maps, phone, website and 4 square. Anyhow, I doubled tapped on the
menu option and hear is where you can read the entire Bob Evans menu.

I know I'm going to love this app with all the different things this app can
do.

So I hope this helps you some. Take care.

All Access [was "Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?"]

2014-12-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
All Access is another app. I haven't used it much myself, but it uses
your location and gives you a list of restaurants near by. If the menus
for the restaurant you're interested in have been loaded into the app
then you can bring up and read the menu.

On an iPhone 5 using the most current firmware, I like it very much. I have
had some success accessing a computer monitor and reading info on bottles,
although this was just out of curiosity. Reading 8 and a half by 11 inch
documents works very well. Some business cards can be accessed. Reading
restaurant menus does work. Keep in mind, though, that lighting is important.
One feature I like is the method of centering the document. Other apps, as far
as I know, do not take the fact that you are blind into consideration like the
KNFB reader does. Overall, I am impressed. It is fast and accurate, and
compares very favorably with OpenBook 9 on a laptop PC using Windows XP pro and
a flat bed scanner, and, of course, a heck of a lot more portable and
affordable. (grinning on that last bit)

Re: reading menus with the KNFB reader - Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Steve
Well, all I'll say is KNFB Reader isn't as good at reading menus as you
would think. In my experience, All Access works better in terms of reading
the items quickly and efficiently.

The problem with KNFB is the way some menus are laid out and the fact that
they are often a lot larger than letter-sized and sometims printed on a
glossy background.

We have fought for the freedom to be able to read our own menus, and I can
easily skim my fingers down my braile display advancing very quickly to
where I want whereas sighted people often tell me the things they think look
good, and allaccess is great, but sometimes, the restaurants don't have the
correct menu listed.

I don't have KNFB reader yet, but I sure can't wait to show off my
independence, and my family will be proud when I can read my own menu with
them.

When I dine, I am usually with others, and I don’t like the idea of
holding everyone else up just to show off. I would prefer a Braille menu, or
better yet, an online menu that I can take my time perusing before i go to
the restaurant. I also like iPhone apps like All Access Menus.

That's the kicker: it costs $99. Far less than previous OCR solutions from
KNFB, but far more than most people normally spend on apps. I'm really loving
it, but only you can decide if it's worth it. Sadly, the company has flatly
refused to make any sort of trial available before purchase.

Hi,

I just purchased KNFB Reader last Monday. I had picked up a take out menu
from a restaurant printed on glossy paper and it scanned it perfectly. Last
night, I began to scan the tccemendous amount of paperwork, that has
accumulated over the years at my computer dest;" The accuracy was amazing. Of
course, most of the papers were 8 X 11. I did try the KNFB Reader on bottles of
wine, credit cards, DVD disks, `igital LED read ous and found that it was hit
and miss on these items. Other apps tended to do a better job. However, overall
I'm impress with the app and the ability to be more portable and not to have to
use the StandScan Pro with a third party app is nice. I haven't yet
experimented with a book or magazine in batch mode. The only glitch that I have
seem to find is when I go to change the speed for reading, the app will not
take a picture unless I close it out through the app switcher and relaunch it.
Then the speed of reading will work at the setting that it was changed to.
These are only my first impressions.

Cheers,
Eileen

RE: menu access - Re: reading menus with the KNFB reader - Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Richard Turner
I was focused on the menu access issue.

I think KNFB Reader is one of the best apps to come along in a long time.

I was very suspect when I heard it was going to cost $99.99. But, it is worth
it.

Richard

Good ideas, but they say nothing about what you think of the app.

Another option for menus if you know ahead of time where you are going is
checking to see if the menu is online before you go to the restaurant.
You can spend some unpressured time reading through it and at least narrow
down your choices before you get there.

Obviously, not all online menus are accessible or even there, but that is
becoming more and more common.
Some of my favorite restaurants even post their specials for dinner by about
2PM, so I can even check to see what those are and don't have to ask when I
get there.

I think we're falling into that area where people are assuming what
works for them works for everyone else or that all situations are the
same. I'll probably fall into the same trap myself, but if I'm at a
restaurant with my family, and my wife is there, then I'll go through
the menu with her. If it's just my boys then I'd scan the menu myself.
My boys are good boys, and they wouldn't mind reading the menu to their
old man, but I can tell when they do they'd rather be talking about
sports or video games while I'm looking over the menu myself. I also go
to plenty of restaurants with friends, who although their spoken English
is good, they have trouble reading the menu in say an Italian
restaurant. Sure there are times when I'd have someone read or discuss
the menu with me but there are other times when I could use the KNFB
Reader to be more independent, and I wouldn't be doing it just to show off.

Similarly for an elevator. If someone asks what floor do you want to go
to, I'll just tell them. I won't use the braille buttons just because
they're there. If no one speaks up though, or I'm on the elevator
myself, then I'm sure glad they're there.

Cheers,
Eileen

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

This is only a suggestion. Over the Black Friday sales, there were a few
options to reduce the cost of the KNFB Reader with sales on iTunes cards.
Paypal had a $100 card for $75 and Office Depot had $50 cards for 40 (limit one
per (customer). I got around that one by having my husband purchase one. So in
essence, I got the app on sale. HTH.

RE: reading menus with the KNFB reader - Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eden,

Would you actually go to a restaurant with your family and try to use KNFB
Reader to read the menu while they probably already selected what they want and
then wait to see if you get a good result?

I value independence as much as the next person, but if I walk into an elevator
with a friend, family member or even a bunch of strangers, I don’t have to push
the correct button just because it has braille if others who are pushing their
own floor are already asking me and I can just tell them which floor I want.
The same for me applies to a restaurant menu. I guess if I were by myself it
would be one thing to use KNFB for this instead of asking the waiter or
waitress to read it, but usually choosing a meal when I go out with friends or
family becomes a conversation anyways and I don’t feel that anybody thinks I am
not independent just because they are reading this information for me.

Regards,

Sieghard

We have fought for the freedom to be able to read our own menus, and I can
easily skim my fingers down my braile display advancing very quickly to where I
want whereas sighted people often tell me the things they think look good, and
allaccess is great, but sometimes, the restaurants don't have the correct menu
listed.

I don't have KNFB reader yet, but I sure can't wait to show off my
independence, and my family will be proud when I can read my own menu with them.

When I dine, I am usually with others, and I don’t like the idea of holding
everyone else up just to show off. I would prefer a Braille menu, or better
yet, an online menu that I can take my time perusing before i go to the
restaurant. I also like iPhone apps like All Access Menus.

Besides those who don’t mind making a spectacle of themselves or mind putting

KNFB Reader for restaurant menus? I am wondering about the speed and accuracy
of scanning menus, which can vary widely in format and quality.

Thanks!

RE: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread David Redman
I love it! I have it running on the I phone 6, it runs great and I use it for
reading and sorting my mail which has been a problem for me the last several
years. Just got it last week so am trying it in different situations.

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Alex Hall
I will just say this. Scanning freehand, I was able to sort my mail last night
with no sighted help at all. Only twice did I have to re-scan something, and
again, that was with no scanning stand or other guide. No, the scans weren't
word-perfect, but they were good, and enough to tell me what was what.

There is only one problem with the suggestion of more than one OCR engine. On
the computer, OCR engines require quite a bit of processing power. They do not
work on mobile platforms. Fine Reader on iOS is not the same OCR engine. It has
been redeveloped to fit the lower requirements of mobile operating systems. I

Re: reading menus with the KNFB reader - Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Eden Kizer
We have fought for the freedom to be able to read our own menus, and I
can easily skim my fingers down my braile display advancing very quickly
to where I want whereas sighted people often tell me the things they
think look good, and allaccess is great, but sometimes, the restaurants
don't have the correct menu listed.

I don't have KNFB reader yet, but I sure can't wait to show off my
independence, and my family will be proud when I can read my own menu
with them.

Re: how are people liking KNFB reader?

2014-12-06 Thread Charles Rivard

2014-12-05 Thread Charles Rivard
In my opinion, using the KNFB reader for one of it's intended purposes is not
showing off, any more than using your iPhone to make a phone call. You are not
proclaiming to the entire restaurant, or to those at your table, that you can
do this, and isn't it mind blowing? Hey, look what I can do, folks? Isn't
that cool?? You are, in actuality, being more independent.

When I dine, I am usually with others, and I don’t like the idea of holding
everyone else up just to show off. I would prefer a Braille menu, or better
yet, an online menu that I can take my time perusing before i go to the
restaurant. I also like iPhone apps like All Access Menus.

Besides those who don’t mind making a spectacle of themselves or mind putting
of meals for themselves and their company, is it really practical to use the
KNFB Reader for restaurant menus? I am wondering about the speed and accuracy
of scanning menus, which can vary widely in format and quality.

2014-12-05 Thread David Chittenden
There is only one problem with the suggestion of more than one OCR engine. On
the computer, OCR engines require quite a bit of processing power. They do not
work on mobile platforms. Fine Reader on iOS is not the same OCR engine. It has
been redeveloped to fit the lower requirements of mobile operating systems. I
am not aware of any other OCR engines for mobile platforms.

2014-12-05 Thread Flor Lynch
it may be possible (in the event of it not being online), the restaurant could
give you in advance a printed menu so you could scan that with the KNFB Reader.
Having said that, perhaps KNFB Reader should offer a choice of OCR engines -
between (say) FineReader and ScanSoft. I've seen instances recently where
FineReader was pretty hopeless, on both Kurzweil 1000 and on KNFB Reader; but
where the ScanSoft OCR did better with some restaurant menus (On K1000). Also,
I know that typefaces (Italic type, which may be unusual in these menus)

I agree apps like All Access, on line menus or braille menus are great
alternatives, but if none of these are available, using your OCR app
isn't showing off, and having someone read the menu to you is also
holding people up.

2014-12-05 Thread Andy Baracco
When I dine, I am usually with others, and I don’t like the idea of holding
everyone else up just to show off. I would prefer a Braille menu, or better
yet, an online menu that I can take my time perusing before i go to the
restaurant. I also like iPhone apps like All Access Menus.

Besides those who don’t mind making a spectacle of themselves or mind putting
of meals for themselves and their company, is it really practical to use the
KNFB Reader for restaurant menus? I am wondering about the speed and accuracy
of scanning menus, which can vary widely in format and quality.

Thanks!

Eric

I love the KNFB reader. I use it primarily for reading short paper documents
like business letters, etc.. I use it on an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2 and am
amazed at how quick and accurate it is.
