Actually, this can also be an issue with gmail IMAP. IMAP has default setting

2013-01-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Interesting, I'm using IMAP with Gmail on my iPhone, and only the last
50 messages are downloaded to my iPhone, and even then larger messages
are truncated. I have messages in my in box going back to 2011 at the
moment, although I'm working at getting those older messages either
deleted or filed in various folders, but having those messages in my in
box isn't keeping me from using email on my iPhone. Maybe the iPad is
different, and tries to synch everything in your in box.

I changed my Gmail settings to have my deleted messages placed in the
Trash folder. It's been years since I've done this, but I don't recall
it being too difficult. After 60 days (although I'm not sure about the
time frame here) those messages are deleted. I like this actually, since
there have been a few occasions when I've had to go back and grab a
message I deleted not to long ago. You get over 7G of storage with Gmail
so I am not hesitant to use it.

Folders are a purely visual situation. Double tap and hold with one finger on
an app (pass through gesture). After the tritone, slide your finger slowly and
the app will move. Place it on top of another app and a folder will
automatically and both apps will be in it. I believe you can have up to 16 apps
per folder. Drag other apps you want in the folder so that they are on top of
the folder. When you lift your finger the apps automatically go in the folder.

Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.

2013-01-22 Thread David Chittenden
I found gmail's server stuff to be quite frustrating. You need to work your way
in to gmail's profile handling of messages and tell it to delete messages when
you delete them. The default setting is to save all messages on the server. It
took me a couple weeks to figure out what was going on. I still have over
100,000 messages to clear out. I have been using gmail since 2004.

You are probably moving your finger too fast and then lifting it from the
screen. IOS interprets this as a vertical flick. Vertical flick is perform the
action selected in the rotor. For moving on the screen, it is smaller movements
that are not too fast. do not remove your finger from the display until VO
starts speaking the item.On the Braille display, dot 7 with space bar is delete
and dot 8 with space bar is enter. Braille Edge may have set it up so dot 7
sends the dot 7 chord key codes. Try dot 7 with other dots, all pressed
simeltaniously. Don't forget k chord is keyboard help.

Just curious, but why do you need to clear out all of that email from
Gmail? I've been using Gmail for years, and I have messages going back
years in various folders on Gmail. This doesn't cause any problems with
the iPhone.

On the iPad side, you need apps which handle the file types in order to get
those files from the cloud. Try Pages for documents. It should work, but I
haven't tried it yet. I use iTunes or email the documents to myself.

Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.

2013-01-21 Thread David Chittenden
First of all, double tap and hold on the more numbers button does the same as
double tap or split tap. I just set my keyboard to standard and tested this.

When VO says slide, there is a visible slider bar which a sighted person
touches and quickly slides the finger along. Double tap works just as well on
these controls.

If you are talking about an item picker, double tap on the picker to activate
it. VO focus usually moves to the activated item, which is displayed near the
bottom in the middle of the display. Use a single finger vertical flick to move
to the choice you desire. left flick to the done button to deactivate the
chooser and select your choice.

If you want to quickly go through your email just reading the subject lines and
selecting the ones you do not want for deletion, there are two ways for
accomplishing this. Double tap edit. place your finger at the first or last
message. double tap to select it. single finger horizontal flick (left or right
depending on the direction you are moving to move through the messages. Double
tap on each message to select it. You can also double tap to deselect a
selected message. When finished, find the delete button and double or split tap
to activate it.

The other way is to set your rotor to actions (it defaults to actions when you
open the mail app). As you flick through the messages, use a single finger
vertical vertical flick to select delete and double tap to delete the currently
selected message.

I do all my email on my iPhone and this is how I do it.

For the moment, I'musing standard typing. I'll switch to touch typing
eventually, but for now I like to split-tap when I am sure I've got the letter
I want. I'm not slow, I have a hearing loss, and I have like eight passwords
that NEED to be entered correctly or else all sorts of cluster arrangements
will occur. So, if I split tap on the More, numbers, button, I hear a faint
click, but the keyboard is still the same. If I touch "more, numbers, then
lift up, double tap and hold, I hear a different noise which is a three-tone
noise, which means to me the keyboard has changed, and sure enough, it has.
I'm not sure what I"m doing here that's nonstandard.

And, no, I'm sorry, but there are no other fingers accidentally touching the
screen; this was the first habit I cured myself of a long time ago. No, I
think perhaps there's some misinterpretation involved when the IOS says "Slide
up or down to change the value," but Voiceover says "double tap to change the
value." I'm wondering if this is a similar occurrence to when I power down the
Ipad and VO says "slide to power off," but what is needed is a double-tap
there. In the case of the sliding up or down, it's important if I want to
slide my way through a message list, for example, and split-tap to select for
deletion when I've pressed the edit button.

Once I figure an efficient, fast way to sort through Mail, I'll be able to
start using my pad for just about everything I use my laptop for. Already.

Are you using touch typing or standard typing? If you're using touch
typing then you don't double tap or split tap the More symbols or More
letters buttons. You just slide your finger over there and release our
finger like you do when you're entering a character.

What values are you trying to change? If you're typing, sounds like
you're lifting your finger off of the screen when sliding around to find
the characters you're looking for. Also, sounds like you might be
accidentally having another finger tough the screen, maybe with some
fingers wrapped around the edge or another finger trailing the finger
you're using to touch type with.

2013-01-20 Thread Mark BurningHawk
Hi, David.

I told both Gmail on the server (I think) and Mail on the Mac to delete copies
of messages from the server after download, but no one ever listens. :) So,
yes, I'll have to slay this particular hydra as well. I seem to be
consistently having a problem with the "Slide one finger up or down," gesture.
I think it's being confused with my swipe. There's an adjustable page scroll
spot on my home screen that I cannot seem to "slide up or down to change
value," but can split-tape it. Same thing with my "double tap and hold,"
gesture; when switching the keyboard between letters and numbers or symbols,
When I double-tap the "more," spot, it'll say, "more, numbers," then I have to
double tap and hold again to get the numbers to actually appear. It's almost
three gestures in one just to switch the keyboard map. When I slide up or down
to change a value, Vo seems to interpret this as a swipe or two-finger flick-up
and starts reading the whole screen. Every time I check the rotor, it's set to
containers. So, maybe I need to refine my gestures a bit more. But, I've
taken this thing out of the boxes and am now up to using Skype, so I'll get the
rest; I look forward to playing with it.

Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.

2013-01-19 Thread David Chittenden
Hi Mark,

Remember, iOS is designed primarily to be a touch-screen interface. The way it
handles email is different from what you are use to on the Mac.

Your message list shows messages by subject. You can do some basic tweaking in
settings, mail contacts and calendar. This tweaking determines how many
messages to have in the inbox, should messages be grouped by conversations
(messages with the same subject line), what you want your signature to say,
archive or delete gmail messages, and so forth.

When you double or split tap on a message subject, it will either open the
message, or open the messages which have the same subject line. Note: I have an
iPhone, not an iPad, so I do not have access to the split screen and containers.

When in a message, you can delete, move, or reply to the message. Under reply
you will find reply, reply all, forward, and print.

When not in a message, if your rotor is set to actions (iOS 6 or later), use a
single finger vertical flick to select delete, double tap with one finger, and
the message will be deleted. The other choice is default action, which opens
the message or conversation.

If you wish to go through and select several messages for deletion at one time,
double tap on edit. Now, when you double tap a message, it is selected, rather
than opened. After selecting all the messages you wish to effect, find and
activate the delete button or the move button. There is no select all command
except in the trash folder.

You move through the list of messages/conversations using the right or left
flicks. Three finger vertical swipes move you up or down a page of messages at
a time. You can also slide your finger down the vertical list of messages to
have VO announce the subjects. I suspect that double tap on a message brings up
the text in the right-hand pane.

If you have hints turned on, and have preview turned on, VO will speak the
first couple lines of the selected message when you touch or swipe to it (iOS 6
or above).

As for your old messages in gmail, mail will continue presenting them until you
archive/delete them. I have thousands of messages to clear out this way because
I used POP and saved all messages on the server. I have now changed gmail's
handling behaviour for messages, but need to clean out several years of this
previous setting. I now use IMAP rather than POP, and changed the archive all
messages on the server to delete messages that are deleted. Once I clear out
all those older messages, the behaviour will cease.

syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.

2013-01-18 Thread Mark BurningHawk
Hi, folks:

Thanks to all who've been very helpful to me so far in learning the Ipad 3.
Today, I charged it via the USB cable to my MBP15, and it came up in Itunes
just as it should. I authorized backup over WIFI now, too, so the hard
connection won't be necessary.

Now, I understand that the Ipad was backed up to my computer (Though I cannot
find this backup anywhere through Finder). What I wanted to do, however,
though, was sync all my contacts from the MTP 8ONTO* the Ipad, so that it would
know all my mail addresses, etc. I have no evidence this was done, or that it
can be done.

Also, I'm having a hard time making Mail perform in a way I understand. For
one thing, Gmail insists on showing me messages from June, 2011!, which I can
deal with, but I cannot figure out how to move quickly between messages, either
in list or in body (I'd prefer to navigate by the "regard, ing," subject line
column), and I don't understand how to select all and delete them from my Inbox
when I'm dong.

Is there a podcast I can inhale on how Mail works in IOS6?

My last question would be how to get audio books or music from the Macbook ONTO
the Pad, assumedly through Itunes, manually? I have 86GB of music and only 27GB
free on the Ipad. :)

Thanks, all!
