Worth commenting that there are a number of routers which claim to work with
DynDNS while DynDNS say they don't work correctly.

Philip,

Thanks for your reply. I've managed to work around the problem, but thought

I should give an update just in case anyone else runs into the same thing.

First, I do understand that I shouldn't have to port-forward 5900 and 5800;
I had simply reached the point where I was willing to try anything. :-) I
have since disabled them again. Also, my DDNS address is working correctly,

the IP address I get when I ping the hostname matches the address I get when

going to WhatIsMyIP.com. The Belkin also seems capable of updating the
DDNS correctly, the Belkin documentation actually tells you to register your

name at DynDns so that it can be automatically updated, so I'm willing to
believe that they actually tried it before shipping. :-)

I have come to believe as you do that this is some quirk having to do with
having one machine on an internal LAN talking to another on the same
internal LAN but using an external address. After I read your email, a
light bulb came on, and I used one of the internal LAN machines to
SSH-tunnel to my office across town, effectively putting that machine
outside the internal LAN (its IP address was now that of an office machine).

In this configuration I was able to connect from that tunneling machine to
my VNC-listening machine using the external DDNS name.

The only reason I was going through all this is because I am setting up a
computer for my in-laws and testing it before taking it over to their house.

I wanted to make sure that they could connect back to my machine so that I
could help them with any problems. After my tunneling experiment, I now
know that it will work correctly when I take the computer to their house,
once it is off my internal LAN.

Again, I appreciate your help. It's still an interesting problem as to why
this doesn't work when both machines are on the internal LAN and an external

address is used, but since it's only a temporary situation, I'm willing to
give up trying to figure it out. :-)

2009-10-14 Thread Philip Herlihy
That all sounds ok to me, except that I've never had occasion to test the
connection via a dynamic DNS name from/to a client within the same subnet -
obviously you'd never need to do this apart from testing. Two possibilities
suggest themselves (but don't assume I haven't missed anything!): firstly
that the Belkin simply can't handle the incongruity of the combination of
NAT (where the router has to keep track of which LAN client issued, say, a
particular web request so that it can route the pages accordingly) and
port-forwarding, which caters for an externally originated connection. The
other possibility is that the dynamic DNS isn't working, and you're pinging
some innocent bystander, which is dutifully responding (been there, t-shirt,
etc). DynDNS have a (short) list of certified hardware and say that many
devices don't work acceptably well. They have a software client which is
free to download and easy to configure. However, you can ensure that the
DNS setting is correct by logging on to DynDNS from any machine on your LAN
and updating the address (ideally after disabling the router facility just
in case). Presumably you want to make this connection from a server outside
your own LAN. Can you (after lowering the security settings) access the
router's configuration pages from outside? Have you tried getting an
external server to connect?

Incidentally, in the scenario you describe you need forward only port 5500
to the host of the listening client; you would only need to port-forward
5800 or 5900 if you are trying to reach a server (rather than client) from
outside the LAN.

Greetings,

I have my home PC configured to "Run Listening VNC Viewer", and the PC has a

static IP address of 192.168.2.10 behind a wireless Belkin router. I have
port-forwarded TCP ports 5500, 5800, and 5900 in my Belkin router to the
same port addresses in 192.168.2.10, and I have configured my PC's McAfee
firewall to open TCP ports 5500, 5800, and 5900. I downloaded the
PFPortChecker program from portforward.com, and it confirms that all three
ports are indeed open.

I have also created a DDNS hostname at dyndns.org so that I have a hostname
whose DNS resolution will work even as Comcast periodically changes the IP
address they give me. I configured the Belkin router to update the
dyndns.org site whenever the Comcast address changes. I am able to ping my
machine successfully using the DDNS hostname. So far, so good.

On another PC in my Belkin's internal network, I can start up the VNC
Server, select "Add Client", and connect to the listening viewer
successfully by using 192.168.2.10, and can see the server machine's
desktop. Works perfectly. If on that same machine I instead select "Add
Client" but use the dyndns.org hostname, a pop-up immediately appears on the

listening machine saying "read: Connection reset by peer (10054)". If I
click OK in the pop-up, the same message appears two more times, at which
point the VNC server machine reports "Connection failed". Any idea why this

is failing? It doesn't seem to be a port-forward problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends by the router, almost always isn't possible to use the
external address
from the local (internal) network. From the 2nd PC try to access into Internet
through an
alternative internet connection (for instance, through a modem connection) and
you'll see
that the VNC connection using the DynDNS addres will work perfectly.

Or the other way round if upgrading the server to a newer version is
not feasible in a short period of time: use your old version of the
viewer to see if the problem is still there. If it isn't there, just
use the old version in the meanwhile.

PS: In case you don't know yet. There's nothing to install for the
viewer. It's just an executable. Run it and it works.

Here are some other thing I have tried. When I connect with the web browser
through port 5800 (http://myhost:5800), I have no problem stayed connected. I
even checked and and found the ports on both viewer and server hosts
"ESTABLISHED". It is just the problem using RealVNC viewer.

I have other machines all running WinXP (SP2) and I have no problem connecting
using ReadlVNC viewer or using the web browser. It is just this particular
machine can't stay connected with RealVNC viewer. I also observed that this
only happens when I tried to access any application on the remote host. If I
don't do anything after the connection (no mouse or keyboard action), the
connection stay. But once I move my mouse or keyboard for few second, the
connection dropped.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
EDDIE

The Connection Details dialog is the dialog that pops up when
you run VNC Viewer, into which you enter the server to which

I use to be able to VNC to my computer at work from home. It would first
ask for my viewer password and I would be golden.

It stopped working and when I start the viewer, It never asks for my
password, then after a few minutes...

read: connection reset by peer (10054)

I have found some hits on the Internet for this problem and from VNC users,
but never seen the solution.

I am guessing the wait is a timeout, but not sure why it is never asking to
validate the password. Changed the password on server and user without any
success.

Running VNC Free Edition 4.1.2

"read: Connection reset by peer (10054)" - Connection Dropped After 20 Seconds

2006-09-25 Thread Brett W.
Hi, I recently got SSH and VNC running on my Ubuntu box in New York... I'm
in Atlanta. The SSH works great but the VNC is having issues. Every time I
sign on, I get about 20 seconds of usage before I get the message "read:
Connection reset by peer (10054)" and then it offers to reconnect. Earlier I
was using TightVNC and I got the message: "Error while waiting for server
message" or "ReadExact: Socket error while reading". I've googled all three
terms and come up with nothing of value. Any help would truly be
appreciated!

RE: Painful networking situation - Connection Reset By Peer

2006-01-27 Thread Joe Stanton
Just FYI to all who responded. My issues turned out to be "DLL Hell". The
Cisco VPN 4.x uninstall did not remove all pieces rom the registry or from the
OS, so when I reinstalled Cisco VPN 3.x certain pieces did not reinstall as
they found newer pieces present. This led to erratic operation. Solution was
to not only uninstall the Cisco VPN 3.x but also to manually delete all
remaining registry keys and OS files/folders.

Joe,

It sounds like the VPN is reducing the maximum packet size of the connection
between the corporate office and the client site, but that your VPN is not
correctly configuring Windows to know about the reduced maximum packet size,
and is simply dropping packets that exceed that size, leading to a
black-screen in VNC Viewer and a connection reset.

The two ways to fix this are to:
1) Get a VPN implementation that will configure Windows correctly for the
reduced maximum packet size.
2) Configure your VPN not to drop packets that are too big, but instead to
fragment them.

and is simply dropping packets that exceed that size, leading to a
black-screen in VNC Viewer and a connection reset.

The two ways to fix this are to:
1) Get a VPN implementation that will configure Windows correctly for the
reduced maximum packet size.
2) Configure your VPN not to drop packets that are too big, but instead to
fragment them.

Re: Painful networking situation - Connection Reset By Peer

2005-12-29 Thread Alex Pelts
I bet it is MTU problem. MTU for your VPN connection is larger than your
network which is causing a lot of dropped packets.

Adjust mtu to be about 1300 for all vpn connections and problem may go away.

RE: Connection reset by peer (10054)

2005-09-02 Thread James Weatherall
Rob,

What information do you get in the Application Event Log of the server
computer, logged by WinVNC4, starting "Connections: closed"? If VNC Server
is closing the connection, these messages will indicate why. If these
messages also say "Connection reset by peer" then this indicates that
something in between viewer and server is choosing to send reset messages to
both ends for some reason.

Are you using any dial-up or other transient network connection between the
two?

I have seen several references to this problem but I still have not
found the solution.

I have my idle time-out set to 3 hours but a minute or two of not using
the mouse or keyboard will cause the connection to be dropped with this
error.

Surprisingly, I have a jmh:2.log in my ~/.vnc directory, from about
three years ago, but I do not have a jmh:1.log anywhere, even though I
am currently running vnc on machine jmh, display :1. Any idea what
would prevent vncserver from writing the log file?

Here's my running Xvnc process:

/usr/bin/Xvnc -httpport 5801 -fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/more75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hebrew/
 :1 -depth 16 -geometry 800x600 -co /usr/lib/X11/rgb -rfbauth
/acc/joel/.vnc/passwd -httpd /usr/share/vnc/classes/

Xvnc doesn't support "--version," but the file has a timestamp of
about three years ago.

Thanks.

I am still plagues by the "Connection reset by peer" error message,
which pops up almost whenever I connect to my Unix host (and I don't
think I've ever seen it connecting to a Windows host). I get the

I almost always get the error message if I leave the vnc connection
idle for a while. If I'm using a slow connection, and I leave the
connection idle for even 30 seconds, I'm likely to get the error
message.

The auto-reconnect feature is helpful in dealing with this, but isn't
there some way to avoid it?

Re: Strange Error, read: Connection reset by peer (10054)

2005-04-13 Thread Ford Donald
I've seen exactly the same behavior, and I'm really
struggling with it right now. So far, the wireless
connectivity leg appears to be the common piece in
this trouble.

I've tried it two ways - One all in-network (with only
a wireless AP in the mix) and one over the public
Internet, with who-knows-what in the mix.

Scenario 1-

A WinXP SP2 machine w/Linksys wireless USB 54G NIC
connecting to an Apple AP Extreme base station,
running RealVNC Server 4.1.1. Connecting to it via
another WinXP SP2 machine wired to the backbone shared
by the AP Extreme.

Behavior: VNC Viewer will find and connect to the VNC
Server right away. I'll get 10-30 seconds of normal
connectivity before the link fails, viewer reports
'reset by peer', the server side (with the USB
wireless NIC) drops off and Windows reports the NIC
was disconnected and reconnected (not just network,
but the NIC itself).

Scenario 2-

WinXP SP2 machine running VNC Server 4.1.1, Mac OS X
10.3 running OSXVNC server. Both inside private LAN
attached to public Internet via D-Link wired router +
cable modem. Win XP SP2 laptop attaches to VPN server
@ home via broadband service in distant city via
built-in 802.11G NIC + D-Link wireless router + cable
modem.

Behavior: Laptop connects to VPN fine using std. Win
XP PPTP. Open cmd prompt and start a ping to VPN
server to monitor connectivity. Start VNC viewer and
connect to either host (above). Connection stable for
10-30 seconds, then drops (reset by peer) and ping
stream shows 'no response' messages, but VPN
connection still up. Bouncing VPN clears problem, ping
works again, and it all repeats.

All these devices work properly over an all-wired
infrastructure.

Any thoughts?

a few replies. Let me give you the rundown on what's
happening.

Setup:
Desktop running XP home w/sp2, is wired to the Linksys
Router.
Laptop running XP home w/sp2, is wireless connected to
the router.
802.11g
-Signal strength was at full, 5 bars, and throughput
was at 54mbps.
-There are 4 wireless phones in the house, 2.4ghz.
I even unplugged
them, and removed the batteries from the cordless
handsets.
-Tried channel 6 and 11, same problems.
Linksys Router, it's still setup to basically default
setting, the QoS
feature is not enabled. Quality of Service, it is
suppose to balance
out the bandwidth usage over the network, default
setting is disabled,
so that's not limited the connection speed to the
laptop.

I have Windows firewall disabled on both machines.

Symptom:
I am trying to connect to the desktop from the laptop.
Once I'm connected, I get about 10-30 seconds before
"Error, read:
Connection reset by peer (10054)"

But wait, there's more...After that error pops up and
VNC closes, I get
the little windows wireless connection bubble from the
system tray
saying a connection has been made. Well I thought I
had a connection?
WTF gives...

So I open AOL and run AOL for about 2 hours running
AOL Radio, getting
constant streaming audio, then I try VNC again. It
lasted for 20
seconds, I almost thought it was working...nope. same
problem. But,
AOL gets kicked off as well, because...the wireless
connection is
disconnected. By the time AOL flipped out, and the
VNC error popped up,
the Windows Wireless connection icon in the sys tray
had popped up again
saying that I've made a connection again.

Obvious Theory:
When running VNC something causes the wireless
connection to drop
completely. Duh. But why? And how can I fix it?
Anyone?

I have not tried this yet, to help confirm its only
the wireless causing
the problem...Tonight I will connect to the router
with the laptop via a
Cat 5 cable instead of wireless.

Thanks everyone!

How long are you leaving the desktop alone for when you get the connection

Are you running any firewall (including Windows Firewall) on the broken XP

Are the two laptops connecting over identical network connections?

Are the two laptops using identical hardware & drivers?

Are the two laptops connecting to the server at the same time?

Connection reset by peer 10054

i've been running real vnc current free windows version on winme server from
two xp laptops without problem until the other day.

now one laptop gets the subject disconnect error message; the other one seems
to still work fine. i did not make any changes to either laptop before the
problem arose with the one, and i have re-installed realvnc server-viewer on
the one with problems as well as on the winme desktop server.

on a typical series, i can connect with the problem computer and see remote
desktop, but then instead of pointer, i just get the small square black button
that i can move but not click. if i close real vnc server and re-login, i may
get the remote desktop with pointer for a few seconds and can sometimes click
and operate a remote file, but then it freezes and if left alone i get the
10054 error message.

i did receive a couple of spam emails on the desktop server that mcafee anti
virus said had trojans and were auto cleansed before the problem was noticed,
but again, the other realvnc laptop server seems to still work fine.

any suggestions on what to look for?

VNC-Server. The thing i try to open are a picture in a SCADA system and
this picture is based on a JPG-image. When i open this i can see that it
takes up to 5 times longer to open/load this, compare to the other ones in
the system at server. When this picture takes so long time (30-45s)i get
an error before it's done that says "Read:Connection reset by peer
[10054]".

Is this any kind of time-out problems, and what can i do to correct this?

I can also say that this is a dial-up connection (Modem).

2005-01-20 Thread B. Scott Smith
Careful, there's a bug with the timer on Windows if you set it to zero
(to disable the timeout according to the doc). It will work fine for the
native client, but the Java viewer will no longer be able to connect.
Instead, set the time to a large value.

Are you sure that the SSH part of the system is the problem - when you find
that it has stopped working, can you check the server machine to verify that
both SSH and VNC Server are running?

No, that shouldn't kill the SSH daemon, only maybe allow your router to
"hang up" the call to your DSL provider.

These questions are probably better addressed on an openssh list. I agree
that it shouldn't be that unstable.

That said, since you are using Windows, you might want to check into a
more "Microsoft-centric" encryption tunnel. Stunnel and Zebedee come to
mind.

Try using the "keep alive" option and send a "keepalive" packet every few
minutes (say 5 minutes or so.) I used to have that problem until I enabled
the "keepalive" packet. I think it may be my router settings at home causing
the DSL connection to be shut down. I can always reconnect, but it's a pain
to have to do that... so I have PuTTY set to send a keepalive packet every

RE: Troubleshooting a Connection reset by peer (10054) error

2004-12-06 Thread James Weatherall
Richard,

The messages in the Event Log that would indicate the nature of the problem
would be the ones saying "Connection: closed " etc. From your mail, it
sounds as though Timed Out is the "cause" of the disconnection. Are all the
"Connection: closed " messages corresponding to these dropped connections
labelled with "Timed Out"?

We have seen some similar-looking errors in testing with Windows over very
slow links, which appear to be caused by problems in the TCP stack's
handling of simultaneous traffic in both directions on such links.
Two things to try:
- While the desktop contents are being downloaded, don't move the mouse at
all.
- Go to Options->Inputs in the viewer and select "Rate limit pointer
events".
Do either of these help? (Note that rate limiting pointer events is
advisable for any slow connection, since TCP acknowledgements can take up
non-trivial bandwidth!)

The colours looking slightly pinky is caused by VNC Viewer defaulting to
64-colour mode, and only selecting full-colour mode if the connections
appears to be fast enough. You can use the Default Options dialog to
instead use a 216-colour "cube" for slow connections, which tends to give
much nicer colours at a small cost to performance.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

Troubleshooting a Connection reset by peer (10054) error

2004-12-06 Thread Richard Sheasley
New subscriber and just started working with the RealVNC.
I have just installed the latest stable RealVNC download version on a
machine (running as a service- not as an application) on a Windows 2000 Pro
workstation. This has a DSL connection behind a router. The port is opened
and I can attempt a log-in but the desktop screen does not complete before
the following error comes up in the viewer of the remote machine:

VNC Viewer: Error
Read: Connection reset by peer (10054)
The connection was attempted from a 56K dial-up and the screen would start
to display the desktop after user info was supplied but not complete the
drawing of the desktop. The remote viewer was adjusted or various levels of
colors and items on the options with no success. The remote viewer machine
is a Windows 98 SE machine only running at 800x600 (highest resolution
capable with hardware in laptop) and the "server" workstation is running at
1024x768 resolution with high color. One post discussed strange colors
(pink etc. on the remote machine). I am getting this too, which is only
mentioned to help troubleshooting (and is not a major issue unless it is
related to the disconnect issue).

I have looked at the archives and found some issues discussed about this
but no firm ideas as to why this is happening.

I have attached the only event log with a error code pointing to WinVNC
Event Type: Error
Event Source: WinVNC4
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: 12/4/2004
Time: 4:56:16 PM
User: N/A
Computer: AMD1G
Description:
SocketManager: unknown network event for listener
All other entries are standard Information listings stating things like
connection accepted by IPAddress and connection closed by IPAddress (Timed Out)
All the default settings on the Service were selected including the 3600
for the Disconnect idle clients.

I plan further testing with higher speed connections including just
attempting over the local lan, but in the mean time any suggestions
for resolving this?

Unable to connect to host: Connection reset by peer (10054)

2004-11-17 Thread Alfonsospy
Hello,

I try to connect to my server but I only get the following error:

"Unable to connect to host: Connection reset by peer (10054)"

My server is running on a Win XP-System (SP2) behind a router (Netgear
FWG114P). The system has a unique name like "xxx.orgdns.org" and the port
5900 is forwarded in the router to the local ip of the server. A Norton
Internet Security 2003 firewall is also running on the server system. The
WinVNC Server is allowed to send and receive any traffic.

What is going wronge?

Thanks

The server is on version 4 on a windows 200 server and the client is on
XP PRO with no firewall.
Can someone help me.

(I think this is a good translation; I am better with Spanish or Chinese )
