2003-06-23 Thread RONDA BROWN

Hi to Ken, Mark, Tom, Severin, John & Rosemary,
My grateful thanks to all who sent their recommendations & suggestions.
Unfortunately VueScan does not work with my UMAX Astra 2000U Scanner.
I'm giving my UMAX Scanner to a good home an elderly lady,...
(even older than me), wants to archive some old photos of her family. I
have promised to help her.

I have decided to purchase the Canon LIDE50 from Daniel Kerr.
I find Daniel always comes up 'trumps'. I have been purchasing
hardware, software & advice from

Daniel for many years (it's amazing he still looks so young)!

Once again, thanks WAMUGers.
Kind Regards,
Ronni

Yes, the Power Mac G5 is now official

2003-06-23 Thread Phillip McGree
Yup, last week's stuff was all true.

And, as discussed previously on the list, resellers will be the last to know
the full details. ie the Apple Store will have full details and pricing any
minute now, whereas resellers won't get anything official from Apple Australia
until mid morning some time.

Looks like pricing has gone up though the base model G4 was $US1499 (ie
$A3099), but is now $US1999, so that would put it in the $A3500-3800 range.

WWDC news

2003-06-23 Thread Shay Telfer
[From Macnn.com, in reverse chronological order, so start at the end
and work back up :) ]

Apple and IBM announce 3GHz G5 within next 12 months.

Phil Schiller shows bakeoff, showing that G5 is 2.1x faster. It takes
15 minutes to transition code to G5 (just recompiling). The G5 wins
in 3D rendering, Mathematica 5 (both matrix and integer
calculations--over twice as fast). Mathematica: "The competition
isn't PCs anymore. It's high-end Unix workstations, and the G5 is
faster than them too." Schiller demos Emagic audio software where
1000 simultaneous voices can be played with 24-bit (high) quality
stereo. Then shows 100 EQs, 8 bands each (with stereo) == 1600 bands.
The G5 handles it with only 25% usage. Summary: Photoshop is 2.1x
faster, Luxology is 2.3x faster, Mathematica is 2.3x faster, and
Emagic (no calculation ;)

Jobs then touted the G5 Power Mac's performance against Dell. The
dual 3.0GHz Xeon (533MHz Bus, 512MB RAM) from Dell costs $4000 and
isn't as fast. It has the same stuff but slower. All three Power Mac
G5 machines are due in August. SPEC int test show that 2GHz G5, the
3GHz P4 (fastest available), and 3.0Ghz Xeon. Using the GCC 3.3
compiler, VeriTest independent test lab showed that the G5 is 10$
slower on integer, but 21% faster on FPU. The dual G5 smoked the P4
and dual Xeon. It is 41% faster on FPU than the dual-Xeon and 3%
faster on integer (via SPEC tests). Both single and dual processor
tests were shown. Adobe said that Photoshop will be updated when
these machines are released.

Now Product. Up to 8 GB of memory. Eveything is on independent buses
so there's no bandwidth clogging. The memory is 40x faster. You can
transfer an entire DVD in one second if everything was in RAM. It
features a Nvidia GeForce 5200 FX Pro chip in the low-end and an ATI
Radeon 9600 Pro in the high-end. It offers up to 500GB of storage and
a 4x SuperDrive. It has a new case with a more advanced, slightly
more boxy enclosure. It is light grey, all-aluminum enclosure, which
is very thin. The rear has a mesh backing. It has handles ("straight
up" not diagonal). It is quieter than previous generation machines.
The front is totally mesh for air circulation (as is the back). There
are 4 separate thermal zones (power supply, processor bay, I/O cards,
and rotating storage. It has nine different fans, which are
independently speed controlled. It is 35dBA at normal use (twice as
quiet as the current G4 Macs). Modelsstart at 1.6MHz ($2000, GF
FX5200, 256MB of RAM), 1.8GHz (double memory, double disk, $2399) and
dual 2.0GHz ($2999, Radeon 9600 Pro).

Next: System. It offers 8GBps of bandwidth using DDR memory. The G5
processor are connected to the system controller by independent
busses. There is no competition for bandwidth because it has 12x. It
features a 400Mhz 128-bit DDR Memory (RAM) with 6.5 GBps of
bandwidth. Grahis is AGP 8x Pro Graphics with 2GBps of bandwidth
(power for Pro Cards) and HyperTransport for the drives, 133MHz
PCI-X, FireWire 800/400, USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, Optical Digital
Audio (new).

Apple shows off the worlds fastest PC with three things: chip (G5),
system, product. The G5 has some amazing properties: it's a 64-bit
processor, runs up to 2GHz, and has a 1GHz front-side bus. It offers
full SMP ("designed entirely for SMP"). The G5 has a the industry's
highest bandwidth using an entirely new architecture. It is massively
parallel with a 12 unit core with 2 FPUs and is capable of 16
in-flihgt operations. It uses the world's most advanced chip
fabrication by IBM: 130nm process, SOI 8 layer interconnects, 58
million transistors, 300 mm (12-inch wafters. IBM VP says it "costs
$3 billion to fab this thing" because they "shrunk the gate length to
6 atomic units."

Jobs then talks about xcode, Apple's new developer tools, which
supports distributed building, GCC 3.3 compiler, and much faster
performance. It offers zerolink, predictive compile (compile as you
write for about half the time), and "fix and continue."

Apple's iSight is the "eyes and ears" of iChat AV. It offers full
motion video at 30 fps at 640x480 at 24-bit color. It offers
auto-focus with a F/2.8 aperture, a built-in microphone, single
FireWire connection for video/audio as well as power. iSight has a
better lens, better sensor, and very high quality imaging. Jobs then
compares it ot the iPod. The iSight has a very convenient mounting
system, with different mounts for each computer model, including 3
stands for top of screen mounting. It is shaped like a small grey
cylinder with a lens shutter and integrated tilt/rotate functions.
Apple gives away an iSight to everyone at the conference.

Jobs reviews all the new features and says that Panther will ship
"before the end of the year" for $129. The developer preview is
available today. Jobs then shows video of a panther in a jungle and a
Longhorn (eating grass), saying : that's what the competition is
doing."

Hi,
Here's a rough translastion:

The AppleStore accidentally revealed this Powermac G5 features?

According to MacRumours.com and other websites (aMac?), PowerMac G5 features
have been accidentally revealed:

After receiving the news earlier at FrostyPlace, this image was captured
just in time before it was removed (please look at the red area):

Other than this, some other people from other websites also provided this
picture:

[Picture 2]

This new machine provided a lot of new innovative features, the most notable
feature PowerPC G5, 1Ghz with maximum memory of 8GB DDR RAM, Fast Serial
ATA, USB 2.0 version, some (digital?) sound/plug; according to past
information, this is an all new designed machine.

Re: Safari Debugger

2003-06-23 Thread Shay Telfer
He explained to me a while ago that the only reason that BankWest
has even checked its site on Macs is because David is a Mac fan and
checks things at home on his G3. The web site stats apparently only
show a very minor percentage of Mac users.

[snip]

I've had a BankWest account since 1984, but over the last year or
two have tended towards a Westpac account that I have, the primary
reason being how bloody good the Westpac banking site is.

Phil

Perhaps the reason they don't see a higher proportion of Mac users is
because every time someone complains about the various banking sites
on the WAMUG list people mention that they don't have any problems
with Westpac (well, except with the current Safari beta :)

It's easy enough to see it from the WAMUG list archives, it's a
process that's been going on for years...

Hi All,

I am looking to borrow an ADSL modem for upto a week, mine has started
playing up after a recent lightning strike :o( it randomly drops connection
every day now, before the strike I had over 35 days :o) Telstra have been
out and suggested changing the modem, (I am a year out of warranty). I want
to do this before ripping the Unix server apart and having down time
(running a home network is worse than corporate, if the computers are down,
everyone else stops in this house ;o)

So if anyone has a spare I could borrow, please drop me an email.

Re: Scanner in OSX10.2.6

2003-06-23 Thread John Winters
Ronni,

Have a look at VueScan before you shell out the readies for a new scanner. I
assume here that apart from not having an OSX native driver, the old scanner
is working fine. This shareware program breathed life back into my otherwise
unsupported UMAX scanner under OSX, and appears to seamlessly handle a
phenomenal number of scanners. It scans to JPEG or TIFF files, and you can
set it to automatically open the newly scanned image in Photoshop Elements
for final touch ups. You can download it from

http://www.hamrick.com/

And if it helps, pay the shareware fee to unlock it (and get rid of the DEMO
watermark).

Re:video conferencing

2003-06-23 Thread Dave Choy
Hi HGriffiths,

I'm afraid MicroShaft™ deliberately cripple mac versions of software
such as this to make Windoze PCs look better. It wouldn't be hard for
them to fix, but they couldn't care less. Another case in point is
Windows Media Player, which they *heavily* push to the music and media
companies as a secure way to distribute content, yet they are too lazy
assed to get Windows Media up to scratch on anything other than recent
versions of Windoze. (eg try looking at NHL video clips on a mac - not
possible 'cos the player won't play them) Hence I try really hard not
to use anything microsoft and support their endless quest to crush the
compettition.

Anyway, the good news is there *are * alternatives which work on both
PC and Mac whic you can get your family to use. Here are some
alternatives:

(1) Download ispQ
() which you
can pay for once you check it works. Then your family can simply
download icq for PC and use that instead of MSN messenger.

(2) Yahoo messenger has video conferencing for mac and PC. Download the
mac version and get your family to use it instead.

(3) Squidcam also has a version for both mac and PC (you didn't say
whether you are using OS X - this program works for OS X only on the
Mac or windows) . Some
mac users swear by this program.

(4) iVisit is available on both PC and Mac.

(5) OhPhoneX
is a mac OS X program that lets you video chat with pcs with netMeeting
installed (a free microsoft program that your family should have
already)

(6) There are other alternatives, such as CUSeeMe but they're not free
and your PC family would also need to buy it.

I hope this was of some help. If any of the links don't work, go to
and you can do a search for them - they're all
available from there.

Regards,

David Choy

from within Apple that the matter is being addressed with the Safari
development team.

I've personally submitted feedback at the Safari site, as have many
others, but haven't heard anything back of any kind other than that
posted by list members.

Has anyone heard any more?

Is anyone from Apple prepared to volunteer to chase some feedback for
us?

After all, if Safari works on the Aust bank sites we can all relegate
that "other" browser to the trash.

Re: Alternatives to entourage and mail

2003-06-23 Thread Shay Telfer

Maybe someone would like to create a yahoo group poll on the mail apps
to see which one is the most widely used...

Regards,
Paul.

Well, a brief analysis of my WAMUG mail reveals the following
information from X-Mailer headers. Note that this is 'number of
posts' not 'number of people using'.

Sadly, Eudora doesn't include the X-Mailer header (aside from the odd
few cases), so you can't tell much about its frequency of use.

It's left as an exercise to the reader to break this down by platform
and product :)

Have fun,
Shay

Interesting. I have seen the pic posted someone before, but it looks more like
a 3D model somehow.

Also, the web site is in Chinese, not Japanese. (Japanese language has some
chinese characters in them, because it actually derives from Chinese long time
ago).

Basically the site is talking about the new specs of G5 leaked by Apple store
(source from MacRumours.com). It also states the specs for G5 and the pic of
the G5 are from different sources. So it means the G5 pic is most probably a
fake.

Anyway, we will know in a few hours time whether there will be a G5. Patience,
people, patience!

Re: Alternatives to entourage and mail

2003-06-23 Thread Greg Pennefather
One thing I have noticed with Entourage is that it will suggest email
addresses when you are composing. The list from your address book can be
augmented with recently used addresses that may not be in your address book.
These latter addresses are identified by the @ sign next to them as opposed
to the address book addresses that have a little person icon. It seems to
me that recently received emails are classified for use in this list so if
you receive an email from someone recently and they are not in your address
book they may show up if you start typing a similar address when composing.

You can turn this feature on and off in the Mail and New Prefs under the
compose tab.

Hope this makes sense - I've got a cold and the head is a bit muddled today.

Cheers

Greg

One quick word of warning about DW 3, any Dual Processor MD G4 will not

Dear All,

As my copy did arrive on Friday I thought I'd give it a bash.

PRO's

a) It will boot your Mac in 10.2.3.

b) It has a MacOS X version (3.0) and the MacOS Classic version on
the

same disc.

c) It has a dead easy interface.

After running (it took about 1 hour on one computer - about 5 minutes
on another - so don't give up on it too early will you!) it found 173
errors more than the standard "Disk First Aid". After running the boot
up time seemed improved but maybe I was imagining this! At least it
seems to work without "doing something horrid".

CONS -

Missing - seems not to have MacOS X version of a Hard Drive Optimiser.
Maybe (ha!) MacOS X doesn't fragment!

If you like computer translations, Babelfish
does an amusing job with Japanese pages.

Try this link:

Anyone here speak more Japanese than just sushi? :)

Somehow I doubt the G5s will look anything like what they have in that
article -- there doesn't appear to be anywhere near enough flexibility with
drive bays for Pro users. It might have made a good replacement for the Cube
however.

MacOSRumors.com's opinion seems to have little doubt that the Apple Store
leak was authentic -- though if so, I wonder which poor Apple Store employee
lost their job for stealing Jobs' spotlight...

individually. Although we don't advertise it we normally do work 7
days and nights this is the first weekend this year I've had off
so I'm sorry if this caused problems for anyone. I've only seen one
email sent prior to this posting and that was on Friday. As I said we
normally try to respond to emails within minutes but this email was
answered today. I did have my mobile with me during this time and our
office number was diverted to my mobile which, if is in use, diverts to
a memo service and a number of WAMUG members did speak with me over the
weekend thankyou again for your kind comments.

If you are interested in DiskWarrior there are no copies available in
Australia at the present moment with a new shipment due into Sydney
within the next 48 hours. As soon as they arrive we will process
orders and charge cards and send these out.

For those of you who received copies from the first shipment
DiskWarrior 3 is well worth the wait I've yet to find a machine
that has not had at least one line of DiskWarrior red ink.

I have an Imac ( built in microphone, and Sony DV camera), and my

Thier version of msn messenger allows them to "dial" each other and
use thier microphones/cameras to have a "real" conversation, seeing

something else, or is there another program that will connect to msn

Re: Alternatives to entourage and mail

2003-06-23 Thread Kelly Duffy
You must have turned something on to do this. I looked through Entourage
preferences and couldn't find any setting for it. Do you use any third party
software like spam filters or something? You can search the FAQ and archives
at www.microsoft.com/mac under the Entourage section and see if they have
anything mentioning it there and if there is nothing there will be a support
link at the bottom of the page so you can email Microsoft directly and ask
them. You paid for the software so get them to help you sort the problem
out, that's what the support team are for.

Best of luck,

That is absolute rubbish and I take offence.

You have now on three different occasions asked us about automatically
adding addresses to Entourage.

The fact that no-one responded indicates to me that the problem has
likely nothing to do with Entourage, and much more likely something in
your personal setup. Alternatively everybody hates you :-)

In-fact, a suggestion was made in the message you just responded to.

So, perhaps you should learn to read before you start abusing people.

In-fact, you've not even suggested what you've done to investigate the
problem yourself, nor have you provided any evidence of using a simple
google search.

If you feel that my response is too strong, then I unreservedly
apologise. I feel that too many viewers are *expecting* to be helped,
even though that expectation is entirely unreasonable. You may be
helped
or you may not be helped. The result is entirely random and by the
grace

of other readers.

Perhaps you've not gotten to this paragraph because now you're upset,
but that's just tough.

If you were to look in the rules section of Entourage you might find a
filter that is adding entries to the Address book. I know this is
possible, because a simple google search has as the first result a
discussion about using Entourage to manage a mailing list.

So, go away and do your home-work, or if you already did, then show us,
so we don't all duplicate your efforts to that point.

I'm upset, grumpy and it's not because I didn't have any coffee.

I need a Scanner that will work 'Native' in OSX 10.2.6.

I do have Photoshop Elements 2.0.
Please give me your recommendations on Canon or Epson Scanners.
I like the look of the Canon LiDE30 & LiDE50.
I like the idea of not having a power cord, only the USB cable.

Thanks for any advice.

Re BANKWEST :

They have always responded to my technical queries and i have never

Yes Netscape was a problem at one time... but they responded to say
they would fix and they did at their next update.

I also complained when they had all those ads at the front end
of the login which made a slow access. That has been fixed also !

My experience suggests that they DO LISTEN and will respond !

even made that app fail as well!

Sorry Phil, hose me down, I just don't have a lot of faith in Bankwest
to check up on why Safari is not working... I think the response would
be raucous laughter.

The bloke that I know personally at BankWest has the position of "Senior Manager

He explained to me a while ago that the only reason that BankWest has even
checked its site on Macs is because David is a Mac fan and checks things at
home on his G3. The web site stats apparently only show a very minor percentage
of Mac users.

Send a few comments via the feedback page... generate demand for Mac
compatibilty...if it's not fixed in a few weeks then let me know and I'll see
if I can find an excuse to put David onto OS X, and hence Safari. :-)

I've had a BankWest account since 1984, but over the last year or two have
tended towards a Westpac account that I have, the primary reason being how
bloody good the Westpac banking site is.
