PDF suggestions wanted

2004-06-08 Thread Brad Helden

I have a puzzler that I am looking for an answer to.

I am running Pagemaker 6.5 on Mac OS 10.2.8. I want to save my file
as a PDF but every time after I have set it up to do so a dialog box
comes up saying that i must select a Postscript printer to do so.
Problem is that I do not use a PS printer. Does anybody have a work
around for this PM version used with this Mac OS version?

Thanks,
Brad

Apple release AirportExpress featuring AirTunes.

2004-06-08 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi All

---quote---
Apple announced Airport Express today featuring AirTunes.

Enjoy your iTunes music library in virtually any room of your house. Share a
single broadband Internet connection and USB printer without inconvenient
and obtrusive cables. Create an instant wireless network on the go. Extend
the range of your current wireless network. How many devices do you need to
do all this? Just one.
The new device is $129 and is presumably related to the wireless hints
rumored.
---end quote---

The $129 is USD,..so will be interesting to see what it goes for here.

Enjoy!

Hi, they do have Mac OS X software, and it has been working for
months just fine with my ibook. Can't see why anyone would have
problems as they seem to cater for Macs and PCs equally.

To access the wider internet, they have VPN software available for download.

You need your Murdoch student no. and computer access password for
both the local and wider access.

the Murdoch University Library's wireless access network?

I've downloaded the instructions which are very PC-based:

http://www.murdoch.edu.au/studentit/wireless.html

The gist of it all is set out in the following quote:

The default settings [after using the Windoze XP CD provided by
the library] should automatically connect you to the network, if
not, enter the following configurations.

SSID:
MuWLAN
Wireless Mode:
Infrastructure

Channel:
6 (South Street) or 11 (Rockingham)
Power Mode:
Continuous Access Mode

For iBook AirportExtreme user would this mean just going to the
AirportExtreme icon in the menu bar, choosing 'Other ... ', and
then typing in 'MuWLAN' in 'Network Name' panel with nothing in the
'Password' panel and then starting up Safari and getting access to
the following Murdoch sites as per the instructions page?

Murdoch University Home Page http://www.murdoch.edu.au
Library Home Page http://wwwlib.murdoch.edu.au
Library Catalogue http://wwwopac.murdoch.edu.au
ITS Commuications http://wwwcoms.murdoch.edu.au
IT Services http://www.its.murdoch.edu.au

The library is open tomorrow so I thought I'd drag the new 12
iBook up there and have a bit of a play ... as a Wi-Fi neophyte.

Any advice from Uber-Users would, however, be appreciated.

Fwd: PDF suggestions wanted

2004-06-08 Thread Jon Davison

Hii Brad

You must use a PS printer if you want to either save a PM6.5 file as an
EPS, or if you want to distill for a PDF now or later as a watched
file. I guess you are using PM6.5 in Classic? in which case you should
have a PS printer extension in there anyway by default. Just go to your
Classic Chooser and choose one. If not I can email you one, then all
you need to do is drop it in your OS9 extension folder, it will then
appear in your chooser.

Creating a PDF from PM6.5 is a breeze after that. Either distill
straight away, or save as a watched file for later on. If latter,
simply drop the saved Postscript onto your Distlll icon.

I hope this helps
Cheers
Jon

Win an iPod and an iPod Mini!

2004-06-08 Thread Matthew Healey
Yes, we are finally doing our major yearly prize draw. To be in it, you
just need to be a current financial member of WAMUG. If you're not, you
can always join in the fun at our new members site.
https://members.wamug.org.au

This year, we will be giving away the following things.
1st Prize : 40GB Apple iPod
2nd Prize : Apple iPod Mini
Our Corporate members will also be giving things away, but they haven't
worked out what it will be yet. Watch this space for more details.

Additionally, WAMUG will be giving away 2x 12 month membership packs.

There are some conditions for this give-away, and they are as follows.

1. Members must be present on the night to receive all prizes except
for 1st prize. If a member wins 1st prize and is not there on the night
to collect it, they will be notified by email.

2. Each membership is treated as a single entrance in the give-away.

3. WAMUG Committee members and WAMUG Corporate members are eligible for
all prizes.

4. New membership will be accepted until the prize draw starts.

5. Membership fees must be received by the treasurer for a member to be
eligible.

6. Give-away will be drawn at the July meeting.

I must confess that in this day of electronic communication that is a
pretty big dis-incentive to become a paid up member. I'm sure that you
have subscribers on this list who would love to become paid up members
of WAMUG, but who have no chance of actually arriving in person at any
meeting.

So, for my money, you won't be getting any this year from me.

Disclaimer: I'm not often a paid up member of WAMUG, but prize
give-aways have often acted for me as a final inducement to pay up. I
figure my email contributions pay for my membership without any money
leaving my wallet.

The biggest problem WAMUG faces these days is that all of the services
User Groups used to offer have been far exceeded by the Internet. The
result has been that WAMUG has turned into more of a social club than
anything else. As such, we have to find ways of getting people to come
to the meetings.

It's at this point we run into the paradox of having a computer social
club. Most geeks / power users (god I hate that term) / computer
enthusiasts are, by definition, not that great at the social aspect of
life. Those users that are good at human contact and social interaction
often prefer other things than going to a computer meeting.

The question is, how do we maintain a user group when we have nothing
to offer that can't be done better and cheeper somewhere else?

The WAMUG Server is helping there as we can offer a few services to our
members. Unlimited storage email addresses and local software downloads
are just a few of the things we have planned.

So, for my money, you won't be getting any this year from me.

Assuming you won a prize, how would you collect it?

I guess the ultimate question is, what does WAMUG have to realistically
offer to get you to join?

reason why we couldn't give away an iMac, or even a G5. Members
currently have a 1 in 36 chance of winning.

Which is a lot better (and healthier) than drinking the equivalent
amount of Pepsi :)

User groups are also one of the ways that users have of getting
representation, whether it be with Apple or some local
sites/banks/whatever who've done something silly and written web
pages that don't work on the Mac.

I think the 'more prizes if you turn up' option is quite reasonable.
After all you can still win first prize, even if you don't show! It
does encourage members who otherwise wouldn't show to turn up at a
meeting and meet other members. Of course, there are people who won't
be able to make it, but they have the option of not paying their
membership, and they still get the advantage of being on the list.

WAMUG is somewhat geographically biased by definition, otherwise
people could just run off and discuss everything on Apple's forums or
other lists. But they'd lose the chance to meet and network with
other local Mac users, lose out on local business opportunities and
support, and become yet another social group subsumed into the
faceless morass that is the internet.

If WAMUG's not doing what you'd like it to do, suggestions can always
be made to the committee, and positions are open every year at the
AGM!

Have fun,

Safari problem after 10.3.4 upgrade

Hello everyone
Can you help me please?

Since updating the OS to 10.3.4 (including Safari and mail updates)
through Software update on my G4,
I cannot successfully download PDFs or other files through safari

The internet and Mail work well, as does Software update and some other
on line updaters like
Speed Download 2 and Safari Enhancer. (I updated Security update this
morning)

I have run Yasu and DiskWarrior regularly and all is normal. I've
looked at Safari Help
without success. Also I've been right through Safari Preferences
several times.

I use Telstra BigPond ADSL and they say everything seems normal their

Before I start meddling with things I don't properly understand, I

Educational Pricing

2004-06-08 Thread Antony N. Lord
I could have sworn I read (on the WAMUG) list a few days ago a thread
regarding changes to eligibility for educational discounts (and
warranty periods) on Mac hardware purchases.

After much hunting I can't seem to find any references.

In short my questions are

* Who qualifies? In my case I'm a UWA graduate but I'm not sure if
this alone qualifies me. My father is a ECU lecturer - I don't know
if this helps. Apple.com.au doesn't seem particularly helpful in
spelling out who qualifies.

* Do all the Apple Resellers support (the same?) educational pricing?

* Anyone know if you can use a Resellers finance option (RentSmart
etc) in conjunction with educational pricing?

Cheers, Anton.

Hi Antony

Yes it was on the last few days (from Shay)

---quote---
Hmm... That's interesting. Apple announced a change of policy (at
least with regards to purchases from UWA's Winthrop Australia) that's
coming in after June 28th, namely that

* 3 year warranty for staff ,students and private purchases would no
longer be available (UWA departments and affiliates still get it)

* UWA Alumni will no longer be eligible for educational pricing

Curiouser and curiouser.

So if you're eligible for a discount from UWA you should get shopping
now if you want a 3 year warranty and the Alumni discount (although
you need to be a paid up member of UWA Alumni, of course).

Have fun,
Shay
---end quote---

Most Apple resellers can offer educational pricing. Some can't do
all,..quite tricky. ;o)

Yes you can use an education price with Flexirent or something similar.

Hope that helps. Email me off list if you want more info.

Since updating the OS to 10.3.4 (including Safari and mail updates)
through Software update on my G4,
I cannot successfully download PDFs or other files through safari
download.

What happens when you try to download them? Do they appear in Safari's
Download window?

You may have installed the latest security patch, which means
documents may not necessarily open automatically, but you should be
able to open them via the download window.

Thanks,
Shay

Re: Safari problem after 10.3.4 upgrade

2004-06-08 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Shay

The OS 10 partition shows as 7.5 GB, 5.68 GB used, 1.82 GB available.
However you are right, the downloads folder was on a separate partition
which proved to be full.
Thats why the direct upgrades were working, as they go to the OS 10
partition.

I moved the downloads folder and now all is well.

Thank you very much for your time and trouble.

As someone else said, there are no silly questions, just a lot of
uninformed dingbats.

Thank you for your reply Shay.

They show up in the downloads window, but show a message - cannot
create file

or sometimes - cannot read file.

How much disk space is spare on that drive? It sounds like it might be
running out of space before it can save the complete file. It
downloads fine for me.

Thanks,
Shay

* Who qualifies? In my case I'm a UWA graduate but I'm not sure if
this alone qualifies me.

You need to have paid your dues to the UWA Graduate association ($27
for one year) to become an Active Member

My father is a ECU lecturer - I don't know if this helps.

He should qualify, if that's the case. I think ECU counts for discounts...

Apple.com.au doesn't seem particularly helpful in spelling out who qualifies.

* Do all the Apple Resellers support (the same?) educational pricing?

I'm not sure. Not all of them used to, but that may have changed.

* Anyone know if you can use a Resellers finance option (RentSmart
etc) in conjunction with educational pricing?

You'd have to ask the reseller :)

More info can probably be found at the on-line Apple Education Store

http://www.apple.com.au/education/store/

Have fun,

A lecturer, University campus, Tafe campus or current Uni or TAFE student
are entitled to EDU prices. The changes in system, are to the warranty's
given. Individuals from 28th june only receive 1 year. University's and Tafe
still get a 3 yr.

 * Do all the Apple Resellers support (the same?) educational pricing?
All prices will be exactly the same. Apple are selling the item and reseller
gets a agent commission.

 * Anyone know if you can use a Resellers finance option (RentSmart

A reseller can bill a finance company with delivery to the student.

Officially, you won't. Resellers have been notified via Apple's Reseller
Channel website, and I believe Shay read it somewhere :-) (I don't know
where!)

If you are a UWA Alumni (I am also a graduate from UWA, but you have to join
(and pay for) the Alumni) to qualify. Graduates don't count. Your father
can buy at edu pricing, as he is a lecturer.

 * Do all the Apple Resellers support (the same?) educational pricing?

Only resellers that have educational qualifications with Apple. Winthrop is
the biggest. I'm not sure who else is now, since the demise of Gmac. Does
anyone know who is for sure these days?

 * Anyone know if you can use a Resellers finance option (RentSmart

Yes! Edu pricing has nothing to do with the way you finance it. I had a
number of deals in the past where teachers salary sacrificed for a new
laptop. A few bought through Flexirent and Rentsmart - which were good
deals as the three year warranty covered your Mac until the contract
finished (unless you went 4 years). Now that the 3 year warranty is almost
over, if you purchase via Flexirent you will have to cover the time after
your first year your own way (Flexirent do not cover for the time of the
loan).

The new edu 3 year warranty is pretty much only departments, not
individuals. Best bet is to check with your edu supplier before the 28th!

Re: PDF suggestions wanted

2004-06-08 Thread David Noel
Hello All --

-- Yes, I do this with Pagemaker 6.0 and OS 9.1, so it should be possible for
Brad to do it with his setup. You do need the driver for a postscript printer
(eg a Laserwriter) but you don't need the printer itself (I think).

-- You need to make the PDF in 2 stages. If your Pagemaker file is a longer
publication and you want to PDF just part of it, set up the part you want to
PDF as a number of separate pages, so that if printed normally, the pages you
printed would include
just the bit you want to PDF.

-- Then open a print command to print the part (or all), but under 'Print
Options' select 'Write Postscript to file' and insert a name for your file.
This will generate a postscript file, with the default extension .ps.

-- Then open Acrobat Distiller, which comes as part of the Pagemaker package,
type in the name of your postscript file, and it will convert it to a PDF file.

-- There also should be a 'Create Adobe PDF' command under the Pagemaker File
menu, which may do the whole thing directly for you. However, I have found that
this will sometimes give you an incorrect page output format, eg portrait
instead of landscape.

-- I should acknowledge the advice of Tom Vanderveldt in getting this working.
Good luck!

 Thanks,
 Brad

ITQ/ Digilife in Mt Hawthorn lets you use Flexirent for educational
stuff, I imagine others will do the same.

BTW the educational three year apple warranty is being phased out
near the end of June

From June 28th, Tricare will no longer be offered to EDU Teachers and
Students on hardware purchases. It's not all bad news though. For the
1st time, all TAFE students across Australia studying certificate
level (or higher) courses will get access to EDU pricing.
