PDF suggestions wanted
I have a puzzler that I am looking for an answer to. I am running Pagemaker 6.5 on Mac OS 10.2.8. I want to save my file as a PDF but every time after I have set it up to do so a dialog box comes up saying that i must select a Postscript printer to do so. Problem is that I do not use a PS printer. Does anybody have a work around for this PM version used with this Mac OS version? Fwd: PDF suggestions wanted
Hii Brad You must use a PS printer if you want to either save a PM6.5 file as an EPS, or if you want to distill for a PDF now or later as a watched file. I guess you are using PM6.5 in Classic? in which case you should have a PS printer extension in there anyway by default. Just go to your Classic Chooser and choose one. If not I can email you one, then all you need to do is drop it in your OS9 extension folder, it will then appear in your chooser. Creating a PDF from PM6.5 is a breeze after that. Either distill straight away, or save as a watched file for later on. If latter, simply drop the saved Postscript onto your Distlll icon. I hope this helps Cheers Jon Begin forwarded message: From: Brad Helden [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 7 June 2004 11:24:39 PM To: WAMUG Mailing List wamug@wamug.org.au Subject: PDF suggestions wanted I have a puzzler that I am looking for an answer to. Win an iPod and an iPod Mini!
Yes, we are finally doing our major yearly prize draw. To be in it, you just need to be a current financial member of WAMUG. If you're not, you can always join in the fun at our new members site. https://members.wamug.org.au This year, we will be giving away the following things. 1st Prize : 40GB Apple iPod 2nd Prize : Apple iPod Mini Our Corporate members will also be giving things away, but they haven't worked out what it will be yet. Watch this space for more details. Additionally, WAMUG will be giving away 2x 12 month membership packs. There are some conditions for this give-away, and they are as follows. 1. Members must be present on the night to receive all prizes except for 1st prize. If a member wins 1st prize and is not there on the night to collect it, they will be notified by email. 2. Each membership is treated as a single entrance in the give-away. 3. WAMUG Committee members and WAMUG Corporate members are eligible for all prizes. 4. New membership will be accepted until the prize draw starts. 5. Membership fees must be received by the treasurer for a member to be eligible. 6. Give-away will be drawn at the July meeting. - Matt

I'm sure that you have subscribers on this list who would love to become paid up members of WAMUG, but who have no chance of actually arriving in person at any meeting. The biggest problem WAMUG faces these days is that all of the services User Groups used to offer have been far exceeded by the Internet. The result has been that WAMUG has turned into more of a social club than anything else. As such, we have to find ways of getting people to come to the meetings. It's at this point we run into the paradox of having a computer social club. Most geeks / power users (god I hate that term) / computer enthusiasts are, by definition, not that great at the social aspect of life. Those users that are good at human contact and social interaction often prefer other things than going to a computer meeting. The question is, how do we maintain a user group when we have nothing to offer that can't be done better and cheeper somewhere else? The WAMUG Server is helping there as we can offer a few services to our members. Unlimited storage email addresses and local software downloads are just a few of the things we have planned. So, for my money, you won't be getting any this year from me. Assuming you won a prize, how would you collect it? I guess the ultimate question is, what does WAMUG have to realistically offer to get you to join? - Matt

As a side note to this, if we get enough people joining, there is no reason why we couldn't give away an iMac, or even a G5. Members currently have a 1 in 36 chance of winning. Which is a lot better (and healthier) than drinking the equivalent amount of Pepsi :) User groups are also one of the ways that users have of getting representation, whether it be with Apple or some local sites/banks/whatever who've done something silly and written web pages that don't work on the Mac. I think the 'more prizes if you turn up' option is quite reasonable. After all you can still win first prize, even if you don't show! It does encourage members who otherwise wouldn't show to turn up at a meeting and meet other members. Of course, there are people who won't be able to make it, but they have the option of not paying their membership, and they still get the advantage of being on the list. WAMUG is somewhat geographically biased by definition, otherwise people could just run off and discuss everything on Apple's forums or other lists. But they'd lose the chance to meet and network with other local Mac users, lose out on local business opportunities and support, and become yet another social group subsumed into the faceless morass that is the internet. If WAMUG's not doing what you'd like it to do, suggestions can always be made to the committee, and positions are open every year at the AGM! Educational Pricing

After much hunting I can't seem to find any references. In short my questions are * Who qualifies? In my case I'm a UWA graduate but I'm not sure if this alone qualifies me. Apple.com.au doesn't seem particularly helpful in spelling out who qualifies. If you are a UWA Alumni (I am also a graduate from UWA, but you have to join (and pay for) the Alumni) to qualify. Graduates don't count. Your father can buy at edu pricing, as he is a lecturer. * Do all the Apple Resellers support (the same?) educational pricing? Only resellers that have educational qualifications with Apple. Winthrop is the biggest. I'm not sure who else is now, since the demise of Gmac. Does anyone know who is for sure these days? * Anyone know if you can use a Resellers finance option (RentSmart etc) in conjunction with educational pricing? Yes! Edu pricing has nothing to do with the way you finance it. I had a number of deals in the past where teachers salary sacrificed for a new laptop. A few bought through Flexirent and Rentsmart - which were good deals as the three year warranty covered your Mac until the contract finished (unless you went 4 years). Now that the 3 year warranty is almost over, if you purchase via Flexirent you will have to cover the time after your first year your own way (Flexirent do not cover for the time of the loan). The new edu 3 year warranty is pretty much only departments, not individuals. Best bet is to check with your edu supplier before the 28th! Seeya Rod!
Re: PDF suggestions wanted
Hello All -- -- Yes, I do this with Pagemaker 6.0 and OS 9.1, so it should be possible for Brad to do it with his setup. You do need the driver for a postscript printer (eg a Laserwriter) but you don't need the printer itself (I think). -- You need to make the PDF in 2 stages. If your Pagemaker file is a longer publication and you want to PDF just part of it, set up the part you want to PDF as a number of separate pages, so that if printed normally, the pages you printed would include just the bit you want to PDF. -- Then open a print command to print the part (or all), but under 'Print Options' select 'Write Postscript to file' and insert a name for your file. This will generate a postscript file, with the default extension .ps. -- Then open Acrobat Distiller, which comes as part of the Pagemaker package, type in the name of your postscript file, and it will convert it to a PDF file. -- There also should be a 'Create Adobe PDF' command under the Pagemaker File menu, which may do the whole thing directly for you. However, I have found that this will sometimes give you an incorrect page output format, eg portrait instead of landscape. -- I should acknowledge the advice of Tom Vanderveldt in getting this working. Good luck! David Noel / 2004 Jun 8 === Brad Helden wrote: I have a puzzler that I am looking for an answer to. I am running Pagemaker 6.5 on Mac OS 10.2.8. I want to save my file as a PDF but every time after I have set it up to do so a dialog box comes up saying that i must select a Postscript printer to do so. Problem is that I do not use a PS printer. Does anybody have a work around for this PM version used with this Mac OS version? safari and pdf printing
I've set up safari so pdf files open within the tab, but I can't print the pages at all. The print menu comes up, it looks like it's processing then... nothing. Rosemary Horton [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Fwd: Educational Pricing

ITQ/ Digilife in Mt Hawthorn lets you use Flexirent for educational stuff, I imagine others will do the same. BTW the educational three year apple warranty is being phased out near the end of June From June 28th, Tricare will no longer be offered to EDU Teachers and Students on hardware purchases. It's not all bad news though. For the 1st time, all TAFE students across Australia studying certificate level (or higher) courses will get access to EDU pricing. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=200736p=1 Rosemary Horton [EMAIL PROTECTED]
WTB ammendment
Hi, I just reread my earlier post and realised that I stuffed part of it up. No tray loading imacs if possible not slot ones. Apologies for the brain fade. Smiles Aurora -- Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness.
