iMovie 06 to Final Cut Express 4

2008-01-16 Thread Stephen Chape

Hi folks,

Has anyone found a way to export clips from iMovie 06 to Final Cut
Express 4 ?

I have a project that I would like to complete in FCE.
Don't really want to find all the clips again from my Mini DV tapes !!!

New Mac Dictation software

2008-01-16 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi...

As it's a pretty common question on the list I thought I'd point out
that MacSpeech have released their new dictation software (MacSpeech
Dictate) at MacWorld Expo. It's based on Dragon Naturally speaking
and claims 99% accuracy after 5 minutes of training.

Re: iMovie 06 to Final Cut Express 4

2008-01-16 Thread Jude
Can't remember all the version differences, but essentially clips
captured in iMovie are DV stream, and you need them to be quicktimes
for FCE. I think there is the option to export movie to quicktime
movie in iMovie.

Do this for all the clips, then import the quicktimes into FCP.

If this is too confusing or stressful, you *can* open the imovie
captures in FCE, but you will probably need to render each clip on
the timeline.

Re: Mighty Mouse scroll fix

2008-01-16 Thread James Devenish
Hi all,

My experience with Mighty Mouse has been that wetting the ball with
'rubbing alcohol' (isopropanol), then rolling the ball against a
cloth, dislodges built up grime and clears up the scrolling in all
directions. Each time, it seems longer and longer between cleanings
(can't even remember the last time I did it), and isopropanol won't
corrode the components or scratch the plastic casing. Then again,
perhaps it's just because I'm keeping my own hands cleaner :-)

Re: Mighty Mouse scroll fix - finger fixer

2008-01-16 Thread gary dorn

Yesterday my cordless Mighty Mouse stopped scrolling upwards. Down,
left and right was fine.

I ve got 2 mighty mouse, first one I bought 2nd hand. I've noow
pulled it apart and the rollers had fair bit of fine hair, dust,
fabric lint etc - hair curls around the rollers stops them moving.
Its now got a bit of magic tape holding the case back together ( I
snapped the casing ring when taking it off - bugger)

work fine now

I've tried the magic cloth, etc that various sites, including Apples
little video tout - works for little while.

My Sure Way

I have also found that my fingers either get oily, sweaty or too dry,
so I lick/spit on my fingers and dry them and that seem to the trick
- for a while.

Re: iMovie 06 to Final Cut Express 4

2008-01-16 Thread Martin Hill
Another option that doesn't require the time and duplication of disk
space required by exporting your movie from iMovie is to:

- right-click (or control click) on your iMovie project (called My
Great Movie.iMovieProject or whatever you titled it) and choose show
package contents from the pop-up context menu

- open the Shared Movies folder
- then open the iDVD folder

You should then see a Quicktime reference movie for your whole edited
movie which you will be able to drag straight into the timeline in
Final Cut Express (or Pro). FCE will ask if you want to change
settings to match the imported footage which you should do in order
not to have to re-render all the time.

This reference movie is only ~ 300K in size, but it acts as if it is
the entire exported iMovie project movie which you can edit to your
heart's content in FCE (or FCP). Just make sure you don't make any
changes to the original imovie project otherwise it will mess up the
reference movie in FCE.

Re: Mighty Mouse scroll fix

2008-01-16 Thread pweaver
While my MM is still working okay, it seems from the comments of
others that these gadgets have the potential to be as troublesome as
any of their Apple forebears. I found the following site which shows
how to open and clean them if all else fails:
http://shirster.multiply.com/journal/item/194

I notice in one of the pics with the how-to article there is a packet
of ciggies. Smoke particles have never been good for electronics.
Could there be a link to the ill-health of Mighty Mice?

Cheers, Paul.

Think I will investigate if there is similar workaround for the

Would be nice at that price.

As I don't require a desktop replacement laptop, rather a laptop

appealing.

Re: HP colour laser printers

2008-01-16 Thread Martin Hill
Just be aware that the toner cartridges cost a pretty penny and are no
doubt where HP makes up their money on these cheap lasers.

You need 4 cartridges - cyan, magenta, yellow and black and each costs
$120, so that's $480 for a complete new set.

Each of the colour cartridges is rated at 2,000 pages, with the black
being 2,500 if I recall correctly. (however, if you're printing full
page colour on every sheet it will be a lot less)

I'm pretty sure that the printer itself ships with only partially
filled cartridges (1,000 pages) though I'd have to check to be sure.

This model (HP Laserjet 1600) is also USB only - no ethernet - you
need to go up a couple of hundred dollars to the HP Laserjet 2600 to
get ethernet and official OS X compatibility. (this printer also has
a $200 rebate current.)
