Re: Joystick for X-Plane 9

2009-12-08 Thread Ronda Brown

Greetings Wendy,

I don't have any experience with Joysticks, but as Michael Waldie has
recommended Logitech.
I have heard good reports on Logitech's high-end Flight System G940 hands-on:

What I wanted to warn you about is Time Machine & X-Plane 9.

By default, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard & Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard & is set to
automatically back up the entire hard drive using Time Machine. This includes a
user’s X-Plane directory. Most users would prefer not to have this backed up,
due to the fact that it demands a significant amount of space (for something
already backed up to DVDs) and generally also comes with a performance hit.

For this reason, it is recommended that users disable Time Machine while
installing X-Plane, then re-enable it after telling it to exclude the X-Plane
directory from its backup. This can be done using the following instructions:

1. Before installing X-Plane, choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
2. Click the Time Machine icon.
3. In the window that appears, turn Time Machine off.
4. Install X-Plane according to the previous instructions, noting where it was
installed to.
5. With X-Plane installed, open the Time Machine preferences as before and
click the Options button.
6. Click the + button to add a folder to the “Do not back up” list and select
the X-Plane installation directory.
7. Click the Done button and turn Time Machine back on.

Cheers,
Ronni

Update to SuperDuper Failure - Lost Disk Space

2009-12-08 Thread Jane Griffiths

Re my earlier message to WAMUG

I have found the large file created by SuperDuper when the backup failed.

Following advice from Support at Shirt-pocket.com (the makers of SuperDuper)
the file was found by using Finder's Go>Go To Folder... in the menu bar then
opening /Volumes, this shows the file created by SuperDuper. Simply deleting it
and emptying Trash released my lost 30GB of hard disk space.

Hope this helps anyone else who suffers a similar problem.

Thanks
Jane

Hi

I have a 15" MacBook Pro unibody
2.53GHz
4GB Ram
running 10.6.2

Today I set SuperDuper (V 2.6.2) running to clone my HD to ext usb drive as I
have done many times before.

When i returned to my MacBook Pro a few hours later it appeared to still be
running although the computer had gone to sleep. Finally SuperDuper finished
but said the back-up had failed.

It was then that I noticed that the spare 30GB of hard drive space on my MBPro
had vanished and my hard drive was full!

The cloning appears to have been completed onto the external usb drive,
although I have not tried to boot from it yet.

I've used the Disk Inventory X application to try to find any large duplicated
files that SuperDuper may have created on my HDD but can't find any. All the
large files that it shows me are the usual iPhoto library and Parallels virtual
machines, I don't see any unfamiliar large files that could account for the
sudden loss of 30GB of hard drive space.

Googling the problem suggests that if CarbonCopyCloner is interrupted
mid-process it will fill the source hard drive, but i can't see any info
relating to SuperDuper doing a similar thing.

I have restarted the Mac and repaired permissions but this has only freed up
3GB of space.

Any ideas as to what has filled my hard drive and where i can find it to delete
it?

Thanks
Jane

Re: Joystick for X-Plane 9

2009-12-08 Thread Michael Waldie

Hi Wendy,

I purchased a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick to use with
X-Plane 9. I bought it from JB HiFi, unusually I cannot find my receipt for it
now but I think it was about $45.
It was a while ago that I bought this but I have a link here to x-plane.org
forums and people giving their opinions and the Logitech is good for getting
started. If you are after something a bit more serious, the Saitek controllers
are highly recommended.

Anyway, if you would like to read more details about what other users reckon,
click on this link for the forum:

For what its worth, I succumbed to the urge when Apple had their
recent TGI Friday annual special. I didn’t go for a 2TB drive but I
did go for the i7 processor (so another build to order). My
experience was:

• Order placed with Apple online store on 27/11/09 – at the time of
finalising the order it was showing:

Ships: 7-10 business days
Delivers: within 2-5 business days (after shipment) by
Standard Shipping
ie they were suggesting a final delivery date of 9–15 business days
after order

• The Apple Store Order Acknowledgment email then advised:
Ships: 11/12/2009
Delivers: 17/12/2009
ie they were predicting shipping at 10 business days and delivery 4
business days after shipping.

• The Apple Store Shipment Notification email then advised:
Shipment Date: 01/12/2009
Delivers By:08/12/2009
Ie actual shipment date (Tuesday) was only 2 business days after
order (Friday) and they were predicting delivery 5 business days
after shipping.

The iMac was actually delivered around 9am yesterday morning
(Tuesday 08/12/2009) as promised. The TNT tracking suggests that
delivery could have been earlier but there was some delay in Sydney:

08 Dec 2009 10:30:00 Albany Shipment Delivered In Good
Condition.

08 Dec 2009 06:58:30 Perth Out For Delivery.
07 Dec 2009 12:16:34 Perth Onforwarded For Delivery
06 Dec 2009 10:00:11 Sydney Shipment In Transit.
04 Dec 2009 18:00:00 Sydney Delay. Recovery Action
Underway
02 Dec 2009 09:15:47 Pudong International Airport
Shipment In Transit.
02 Dec 2009 01:55:36 Pudong International Airport
Shipment Received At Transit Point.

01 Dec 2009 23:02:00 Shanghai Shipment In Transit.
01 Dec 2009 22:39:49 Shanghai Shipment In Transit.

Of course, just because this was my experience doesn’t guarantee
similar for you but, so far, my experience with Apples delivery has
been terrific:

Previous 24” iMac ordered in the 2007 TGI Friday annual special:
• Order placed with Apple online store on 29/11/07 (at 11pm Thursday
- it was Friday 30th in Sydney) – at the time of finalising the
order it was showing:

Ships By:29/11/2007 - 30/11/2007
Delivers By:30/11/2007 - 04/12/2007
Actual Delivery:morning of Tuesday 04/12/2007 – 2 business days
after ordering!! (Obviously this was in stock in Sydney rather than
shipping from China!)

Other items ordered in this years TGI Friday annual special:

Photoshop elements, Bento, Mobile Me Family Pack – all three items
separately shipped but with same delivery/timescale:

Apple Store Order Acknowledgment email advice:
   Ordered:27/11/2009
Ships: within 24 hours
Delivers: 30/11/2009 - 02/12/2009
Actual Delivery:
   Shipment Date: 30/11/2009
Delivery Date: 02/12/2009

HP PHOTOSMART B109A
Apple Store Order Acknowledgment email advice:
   Ordered: 27/11/2009
   Ships: 18/12/2009
Delivers: 22/12/2009
Actual Delivery:
   Shipment Date: 04/12/2009
Delivery Date: 08/12/2009

So, for me, Apple have made a habit of under-promising and over-
delivering when it comes to efficient shipping.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

to do a System Restore. Your specific questions are answered within your
message below. In addition there are further observations I think are
relevant.

The file, InstalledPrinter.plist, is shown under
Devices>MacintoshHD>Library>Printers at the same level as folder sets for
each of the printer manufacturers supported by 10.6.2 (Brother, Canon,
Epson, HP and Samsung). Note that the folder set for Lexmark is NOT seen.
The other folder at this level is PPDs which leads to all the .gz files for
individual printers (including Lexmark). I guess the Lexmark uninstall
process (or other glitch) removed the top level Lexmark file. The Lexmark
family folder set does exist on a friend's iMac (along with a .plist file).
An interesting red herring is that the .plist file is NOT found by
Spotlight.

Another concern is that the external Maxtor HDD has the disc spinning
continually (plus active LED showing) until the iMac goes to sleep after
normal idle time or is forced into sleep mode as a system command. I think
this is new (post Lexmark) behaviour.

The current Brother printer was installed just by plugging it into a USB
socket. It worked immediately. It does not show in
InstalledPrinters.plist.

I installed Skype before attempting the Lexmark printer - no problem. I
installed DropBox after the Lexmark attempt - this was not so smooth and
needed some manual clean up afterwards.

Using your instructions about System Restore, I feel more confident about
doing it if you think it should be done.

Thanks for spending so much time exploring my problems.

Regards, Alan

Hi Alan,

Do you have any Printers installed on your iMac in System Preferences >
Print & Fax?

YES - Brother HL-2040 series. This was installed without problems AFTER
the Lexmark fiasco.

If so, what is the current Printer you are using?

  Brother HL-2040 as above.

What do you have attached to your iMac?

. Maxtor 500GB USB HDD partitioned for Time Machine and iTunes music.

  . Ethernet to Belkin ADSL2+ wireless modem/router.

. Powered USB hub installed with the Brother printer. (Not used with
Lexmark.)

The "InstalledPrinters.plist" shows the printers you have installed, the
optical drive, external disks etc.

Delete any printers showing in System Preferences > Print & Fax that you are
NOT using.

   Only the working printer shown.

Disconnect anything you have attached to your iMac

Then restart your iMac and see what the "InstalledPrinters.plist" shows.

The plist file is unchanged and shows date modified as 5th December 2009.
(The Brother printer was installed after this date.)

Cheers,

Ronni

Thanks for pursuing the finer details. The Lexmark uninstall app may have
left some residual stuff. As the X1170 driver didn't fully install I still
had access to the downloaded install and other files, in a folder readable
with Finder. This folder included the Uninstall utility. This cleared all
visible X1170 components but had a message to the effect that not all files
were automatically deleted and would need manual intervention. The
non-functional Dock icons (alias's?) were deleted with Force Quit. I
couldn't find any obvious leftover files. I did this yesterday so I don't
clearly recall all actions and responses.

I still have one strange text file with name InstalledPrinters.plist which
is copied below. This is located under
Devices>MacintoshHD>Library>Printers. As the list doesn't refer to any
printer it may be a leftover from the Lexmark installation attempt. Is it
safe to delete this - or safer just to leave it ?

Hi Michael,

Definition of "tethering":
Tethering is the process of using a cell phone or smartphone as a modem for a personal computer of some sort - typically a laptop computer.
The term gets its name from how a phone is attached, or tethered, to the computer via a USB cable, but wireless technologies such as Bluetooth can also be used for tethering.
Typically the network carrier and the user's account (contract) have to support tethering before it can be used.
Many networks charge an additional fee for users that wish to connect their phones as tethered modems because it typically uses far more data than using the phone normally would.

Re: Is Help topic on restoring system via Time Machi ne correct?

2009-12-08 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Alan,

Do you have any Printers installed on your iMac in System Preferences > Print &
Fax?
If so, what is the current Printer you are using?
What do you have attached to your iMac?

The "InstalledPrinters.plist" shows the printers you have installed, the
optical drive, external disks etc.

Delete any printers showing in System Preferences > Print & Fax that you are
NOT using.
Disconnect anything you have attached to your iMac
Then restart your iMac and see what the "InstalledPrinters.plist" shows.

Cheers,
Ronni
