On the bludge again
I have a USB Iomega Zip 650 CD reader/writer which I was hoping to give away with a slot loader 350mhz iMac. Unfortunately the power cable in has two of the pins broken off. Re: DVD region codes
Hi James, We are talking about the DVD Region Code blocking on Mac Computers aren't we ... not commercial DVD Players? You should know basis about your MacIntosh and region locking. The limitation is double : firstly is hardware. This is the first to run when you’re inserting a DVD in your optical drive. But there’s a second limitation which is purely software, through your Operating System. As Daniel has explained how to overcome the issue be able to use VLC to play DVDs without affecting the Region Codie issue. We DON'T recommend flashing the DVD hardware on a Mac for numerous reasons. One, it voids your Warranty, Two if it goes wrong during the process ... that's the end of your drive. What needs to happen is Apple Changes this Silly Region Code blocking it has. If you read my previous reply to Shay, re the ACCC case in which the High Court Of Australia ruled that region lockouts breached fair trade and market competition practices. So what Apple is doing is possibly illegal in Australia. You would be able to play Region 0 DVDs, but when you go to play a different region DVD, say Region 4 (which is Australia), you would be asked to change the region of the drive to Region 4. That's how I understand it anyway. A solution would be to copy the DVDs in iDVD (our Apple programme to create DVDs) as it makes disks with no Region Code, so Region Code 0. You can try and hack the hardware with certain software, but I've never recommended this or tried it myself, as if it goes wrong during the process, you can fry your drive. (Not worth the risk I tend to think). Once work around is to not have DVD player launch on load (System Preferences - CDs DVDs then under When you insert a video DVD you change this to ignore). Then once the DVD is mounted (which doesn't affect the region code issue), you find the VIDEO_TS folder, and look for the largest file. You can then play this in VLC. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ Sure, you don't get all the bells and whistles. But you get to watch the movie part without worrying about region codes and locking your DVD Player to another region. :o) Welcome to the free world :o) Kind Regards Daniel --- Daniel Kerr MacWizardry Phone: 0414 795 960 Email: daniel @ macwizardry . com . au Web: http://www.macwizardry.com.au **For everything Macintosh** -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Some omissions from the list: How about my $2,000 Powerbook 100 laptop and its lead acid battery. Then all the Apple laser printers that died mysteriously because of a problem in the power supply. New EPSON printer says it's OFFLINE
Hi All I've just had to go and buy a new printer as my 2 Epsons have recently decided to die. (I reckon they're defaulted to die at 3years of age!) I am on my iMac with OS 10.5.8. I have just gone through all the hoops to install my new Epson Stylus Photo TX810FW. I used the enclosed CD and all went well - I received the 'Installation Successful' message. It is a wireless model. I have checked under System Preferences, Network and am told STATUS - Connected and it shows the name of my wireless connection. I have printing sharing ON. But now when I go to print something from my Mac, I get a message saying 'Printer is currently Offline'. The power is on. I'm also getting a spinning wheel regarding ink levels. The wheel won't stop so I don't get to see ink levels anyway. I've put in all 6 of the new cartridges that came with the printer. I have been able to use the printer as a copier. I need to print off boarding passes for a flight at 6am tomorrow morning HELP! Re: New EPSON printer says it's OFFLINE
Hi Denise, I'm not familiar with these printers setting them up wirelessly - but a couple of thoughts: 1) If you are under the gun to print out the boarding passes, why not just temporarily connect the printer by USB to print off the passes. Then you can fault-find your network printing without the added time pressure ;) 2) You have told us that System Preferences, Network shows STATUS - Connected and the name of your wireless connection. What about System Preferences, Print Fax - does that show the printer - it should be listed in the left pane, with a green light and something like Idle, Default 3) Note that if you have had the printer connected in different ways (ie by USB and by wireless network) each set-up will show separately in the printer list - I prefer to give these listings indicative names (eg Epson TX810FW - USB and Epson TX810FW - Wireless) then if I swap around between wireless and direct USB connection, I just change the default printer accordingly. Hi Denise, This is how I re-installed my Epson TX700W Wireless Printer after doing it all manually the first time, setting an IP Address etc. Your Printer is similar so replace my TX700W with your TX810W Install Epson TX700W set it up to join your Wireless Network. You need the CD that came with TX700W Read the Wireless Networking Basics (sheet). 1. Insert the CD that came with the TX700W Printer 2. Follow the instructions for Easy Install (It takes quite a time to install all the software, you need to be watching and clicking ok etc.) 3. DON'T attach the Ethernet Cable until instructed to. 4. After all the Software Installs, DON'T Quit, continue following the Instructions a Window appears EpsonNet Easy Install 4. Follow the instructions to setup TX700W to join your Wireless Network. 5. After you Confirm Settings: print out the Status Sheet. 6. Then on your Mac, Add the TX700W Printer: Open System Preferences Print Fax - Bonjour (EPSON39D17E)- Kind: EPSON SP TX700W Series (10) Once it is all setup, you disconnect the TX700W Ethernet Cable from the Printer and your Time Capsule or Airport Express or wireless modem The only cable connected to the TX700W is the Power lead. That's the beauty of it, no cables. And you can wirelessly Print, Scan, Copy. Your TX810W will vary slightly, but it will be very similar to above. Re: New EPSON printer says it's OFFLINE
Hi Denise If you are in a hurry and have the cable then do as Neil has suggested. With my TX600FW I had a similar problem and had to go to Applications Utilities Epson Scan Settings. There you should see a Scanner 1 and an address such as 10.1.1.3. Check back in your Sharing Preferences and see what address was there for your printer. If they differ Delete the one in the Epson Scan Settings and put in the other. Click on Test. No guarantees, but might help. Re: top ten worst Apple products
Hi I've been using Apple since the early 80's starting off with the above article mentioned Apple 111 computer (no guru though), but I've never had a sense of apprehension like I do now with SL! Nothing large or specific, I just don't trust it for some reason, unknown even to myself. Odd little quirky things happen all the time to give me the heeby jeeby's. Probably just a seniors imagination running riot. It's fun to look back and make judgements based on modern standards. the fact is, most of the things in the list (with a few notable exceptions such as the Puck Mouse) were pioneering products in their day. Apple was leading the way by actually releasing this stuff. The fact that many of them failed in the market place has more to do with the fact that the market wasn't ready for them, but that doesn't reduce their significance. The other factor, of course, is Apple's proclivity for coming up with ground-breaking technology, only to let it languish (anyone remember OpenDoc?) while lesser standards simply gained firm footholds simply through massive volume of sales. -- Peter HinchliffeApwin Computer Services FileMaker Pro Solutions Developer Perth, Western Australia Phone (618) 9332 6482Mob 0403 064 948 Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to. -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au No virus found in this incoming message. RE: top ten worst Apple products
Hi Ronni Thanks for your interest in my mysterious OS X SL problem. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction, else I will open a new thread. (Its taking a long time to peruse the WAMUG archives!) External USB HDD (2 partitions) is not showing on Desktop, in Finder, Disk Utility or System Profiler. BUT Time Machine hourly backup seems to trigger a temporary respite when all four Mac sources display the USB HDD data. I then get a system error message (red caution) to the effect that the disk was not ejected properly -- and next time connected will attempt repair. This first displayed just after installing the Apple updates yesterday. A trigger for the error message may be when the iMac wakes from Sleep mode. I haven't got a clear pattern of observed events. The iMac was cleanly powered off, external devices unplugged etc, but then Time Machine kicks in as another variable and changes things. This email sent from a PC, not the Mac, so I can test and observe its behaviour. Next time the HDD shows up on Desktop I'll try ejecting them cleanly and then begin the cycle of powering up again. Re:External USB HDD (2 partitions) is not showing
Hi Alan, I've changed the Subject as this is clearly not anything to do with the top ten worst Apple products thread. First question: Does the USB Drive have its own sleep or spin down mode? What I would suggest you try is this: 1. Temporarily un-checking the Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . . box in System Preferences Energy Saver. I 'think' when the iMac goes into sleep mode it cuts the power to the usb ports and therefore to your USB Drive. For this reason it is not 'unmounted' in the traditional sense and so when the iMac wakes up it gives the improper eject error. This would not happen with an externally powered drive. Re:External USB HDD (2 partitions) is not showing
(Re-sent with new subject as per Ronni's post) Hi Alan, Just an off-the-wall thought - you aren't running Windows under parallels or fusion are you? If you are - is the USB drive being captured by Windows and so unavailable to OSX (though, if so, I wouldn't have thought Time Machine could see it either - unless it can override the Windows allocation). In Parallels, under USB preferences, you can choose from 3 options - so that connecting an USB device: 1) Connects it to the Mac 2) Connects it to the active VM 3) Asks which to connect to. So selecting option 2) would result in the device being captured by a running VM if it was connected whilst the VM was running. Just a thought. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. In Snow Leopard, the camcorder may not show up on the desktop, and iMovie may not automatically open (unlike iPhoto), and so you may find you have to go into iMovie and import the movie from the camcorder. In other words, don't despair if there is no obvious indication that the computer has sensed that the camera is connected to it. Another example of SL working in strange and mysterious ways. RE: External USB HDD (2 partitions) is not showing
Hi Neil No Windows (or MS apps). I'm trying to keep to an Apple-only system, but the number of other apps is growing. The apps I do have are well known in the Macintosh community. Regards, Alan Hi Alan, Just an off-the-wall thought - you aren't running Windows under parallels or fusion are you? If you are - is the USB drive being captured by Windows and so unavailable to OSX (though, if so, I wouldn't have thought Time Machine could see it either - unless it can override the Windows allocation). In Parallels, under USB preferences, you can choose from 3 options - so that connecting an USB device: 1) Connects it to the Mac 2) Connects it to the active VM 3) Asks which to connect to. So selecting option 2) would result in the device being captured by a running VM if it was connected whilst the VM was running. Just a thought. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Apple TV
I wish to understand the functionality of the Apple TV unit and if it is able to host the playing of pre-recorded free to air TV (from say an Elgato TV tuner unit into an iMac) to my LCD/Home Stereo unit. Does a pre-recorded TV show need conversion for iTunes/Apple TV to be able to handle the resulting file type? Maybe there are more elegant ways of handling this as there are most likely a series of operations to actually get it visible/audible. If I can understand how this works, it might help me prior to purchase of an Apple TV. Hi Darrell, its really a matter of compatibility with software, and iMovie can handle all formats, including high definition AVCHD. imovie opens an import window when it detects that you have plugged your video camera into a USB port and its turned on. There are lots of other things to know, but all video cameras (except JVC) use video formats that are compatible with the Mac and Windows. cheers, Susan. RE: Camcorders and compatability with Macs
Ok, I spotted this thread earlier and wondered if my Sony HDR-SR10E will be auto-recognised by the Macbook (Snow Leopard) when I plug it into the USB port - for the very first time tonight. I haven't even run imovie yet on the Macbook. I suppose I have imovie - is it part of the standard OSX 10.6.X suite? I think the Sony model I have is AVCHD format and I was disappointed with using it on my PC prior to getting the Macbook in December '09. Will I need to load the specific Sony software or is imovie all things to this camera? Cheers Peter.. RE: External USB HDD (2 partitions) is not showing
Hi Ronni Recent events: Disk icons were restored to desktop without intervention. I did the 'clean' disk eject process I previously advised, clicking on the triangle icon in Finder. I unplugged the USB cord from the iMac. Then powered off everything. I powered up the iMac then the USB HDD. I then plugged the HDD into the iMac. Consternation - absolutely dead. No disk stats in any of the usual places. I tried to force Time Machine to backup now but it said no disk available. I then moved the USB cord from socket 1 to socket 4 on the iMac. HDD icons appeared on desktop instantly and iTunes could play music (from the second partition). I'll try and test socket 1 later. By the way, I did nothing about 'mounting' the USB HDD as it seemed to install itself appropriately. Your particular questions and suggestions answered in your text below. Cheers Alan Hi Alan, I've changed the Subject as this is clearly not anything to do with the top ten worst Apple products thread. First question: Does the USB Drive have its own sleep or spin down mode? ++ Don't know. USB HDD has its own power supply. It normally stops spinning when not in use (vibration test!) but I leave the mains power connected ready for it to work when the iMac wakes up. I normally select the Sleep option manually because of strange HDD/iMac behaviour. If iMac goes to sleep by itself the USB HDD green LED keeps glowing. I normally close the iTunes app, wait for the HDD to stop spinning and LED to go out, then select Sleep option. I normally leave iMac in Sleep mode when not in use. A second (powered but old) USB HDD that I only plug in for a monthly back-up stays spinning until physically switched off. What I would suggest you try is this: 1. Temporarily un-checking the Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . . box in System Preferences Energy Saver. ++I did this but only after I changed the USB socket. I've used the external HDD since I got the iMac last year. The improper eject message only started yesterday. I 'think' when the iMac goes into sleep mode it cuts the power to the usb ports and therefore to your USB Drive. For this reason it is not 'unmounted' in the traditional sense and so when the iMac wakes up it gives the improper eject error. This would not happen with an externally powered drive. Re: Apple TV
Hi Peter As I understand it you would have two options. 1. Convert your video files to a format that iTunes recognises. I use applications such as iSquint and Visual Hub to convert video files to iTunes compatible formats. Once in iTunes it is simply a matter of syncing with the AppleTV. 2. Hack the AppleTV to play other formats/sources. This is one that I have not tried, but there is quite a bit of information available on how to do a software hack of the AppleTV to use other sources and formats. Just google 'Apple TV hacks' and have read at the options. But hacking involves forcing an update of the firmware, so can cause warranty issues. Hope that helps!
