Hi Ruben,

If your current set-up (output jack to amp to speakers) is working
OK - then
perhaps telling us what you DON'T like about this setup (ie what
you are

Re: ADS Tech Instant Music for Mac as sound output

2011-01-13 Thread Dark1

Ok sorry for not posting all the details up. I didn't do it because I thought
it would likely generate more questions and possibly unwanted debate but I will
post everything up now as people are a bit frustrated with my vague reference
to my hardware.

I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.5) on a gigabyte ex58-ud5 motherboard with an
intel i7 920 processor overclocked to 3.81GHz. My sound out is through 2x
3.5mm (headphone jack style) connector cable to RCA which are connected to the
computer through a 3.5mm double adapter and run to 2 separate amplifiers (both
of which are roughly 30 years old). The first amplifier is a NAD 3020 and is
connected to a pair of KEF Concerto SP1004 speakers. The second amplifier is a
Technics SU-C 03 and is connected to a pair of Akai SW-A25 speakers.

I play my music through iTunes but I don't believe the problem is software
related since it occurs during many different things (fluctuates with web page
add animations, occurs at varying intervals in different games (particularly in
movie sequences) and occurs when encoding is using the CPU). It is possible
that it could be interference in the cables but I think this is unlikely due to
the fluctuation during different activities unless the interference is from the
power cable. I do have S/PDIF out but my amplifiers are of course not
compatible with it.

I think I've provided all the possible info now. Glad at least that James and
Carlo led Reg onto the the MacBook optical output.

OK, we now know you are running OS X 10.6.5, but on what? What Ports are you

What Amplifier, Speakers, etc. Give all the information required so people
 can assist you.

Its like 'pulling teeth' sometimes on WAMUG. Emails back and forth, trying to
 drag information out of people.
People expect us to be 'Mind Readers' … we aren't!

 Hi Ruben,

Perhaps you are picking up static with the cable from the computer to the
amplifier. Depending on the version of Mac you have, you may have an optical
digital audio out jack. In provisioned models this comes from the same
headphone jack as the standard headphone out. One just needs a optical
digital cable and, of course, the correct input on your home theatre or
amplifier. I can't tell from your inscrutable, unexpected hardware whether
you have optical digital audio out or not, :-) but later model iMacs and
 MacBooks have this.

Very annoying.
My research led me to suspect a ground loop (google it).
There was almost nothing I could do about this. It even occured when using a

Then, the amp died.
When I replaced the amp, voila!
No more noise.

Re: 27IiMac - screen wake-up problem

2011-01-13 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Ronni,

Well, I hadn't even heard of SafeSleep ;o)

After a bit of googling and reading Apple Support Articles, I'm a bit wiser!

I would be surprised if Entourage was the culprit as I always tend to leave
it (and Firefox) on when I sleep the computer - and for over a year this
hasn't given any problem (I realise this doesn't actually rule it out...)

However, after reading http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776 I checked and
found that I do have Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer checked
and realised that I had recently added a wireless trackpad to my set-up.

Since I used a wired keyboard, I don't actually need to wake the computer by
bluetooth - so I've unchecked this option as my first trial fix - we will
see how we go.

Thanks for alerting me to some of OSXs sleep features - whilst I was aware
of the 3 basic modes of hard drive/display/system sleep, I hadn't
appreciated all the other considerations.

Yes, at the time I tried increasing brightness no effect.

Another potential work-around is to enable screen sharing on your iMac and
then log-in from your laptop. You could then either try to revive the iMac or
 do an orderly shutdown.
I was thinking about that (though I¹ve never actually tried screensharing
yet) - however, now that I¹ve found that it seems to be a sleep failure and
that I can then sleep and rewake using the power button (without actually
shutting the machine down) I do have an orderly ³fix² to recover the
situation it¹s just that I¹d rather not have the situation in the first

I personally would do the upgrade to 10.6.6. If it is a problem known to
Apple, they may have put a fix in the upgrade. Failing that, if sufficiently
many other users are having the problem a fix will eventually be released.
I will, no doubt, upgrade to 10.6.6 before too long however the problem(s)
relating to SL sleep have been reported/discussed through several SL
upgrades though, as I said, the forum seems to describe several similar

In the meantime, after some reading prompted by Ronni¹s post, I am trying
unchecking the Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer option we

 Subject: 27IiMac - screen wake-up problem

 Hi all,

 A strange problem this..

A few days ago, my iMac wouldn't wake from sleep properly - in actual
 fact,
the screen didn't wake-up (though I didn't realise that at the time) -
I
could hear the disc going and, since I have the Mac set to require
 password
on wake from either sleep or screen saver, I should get a login window
-
 but
the screen remained black, with no mouse cursor.

I tried a few random key strokes (to try and wake it) and got the
 beep
that tells you that is not appropriate (ie I needed to login first).

At the time, I was worried my screen had died (and me just a month out
 of
warranty!) and decided a forced shut-down and re-boot should be tried.
However, as I was pressing the power button, the log-in window
appeared
(together with a message about incorrect password - obviously
referring
 to
my random keystrokes when the screen was black).

I then logged in without problem and everything was OK - I have since
surmised that when I went to force the shut-down I actually pressed
the
power button twice - which put the computer to sleep and then
 re-awakened it
(together with the screen, this time).

At the time, I just put it down to some random gremlin - was relieved
my
screen was not dead - and forgot about it!

 Until this morning...

Go to wake up the computer, can hear activity but the screen stays
blank
 -
this time I try just blindly entering my password and hitting return -
 the
login obviously works and I can hear entourage (left running when the
 mac
goes to sleep) retrieving emails from various accounts - but the
screen
 stays black.

I fired up the laptop and the iMac can be seen on the network. I try
 Google
(from the laptop) and find a 5 page MacRumours forum on 27iMac won't
 wake
from sleep stretching from to November 2009 (the vintage of my iMac)
through to December 2010 (ie, basically, now):
 http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=825871

This showed LOTS of people having sleep problems - though the problems
 and
circumstances are far from identical - several of the posts seemed
 similar
to my problem and the consensus seemed to be that the screen was not
 waking
up and that perhaps the computer had failed to go

Telstra Mentor for Iphone

2011-01-13 Thread peta

Good morning WAMUG,

I received an unsolicited call on my mobile phone yesterday, from a gentleman
who identified himself as a Telstra mentor for iPhones.

Nowadays we feel uneasy about the possibility of scams, and so although this
seemed to be legitimate and probably is, I have not heard of a Telstra mentor
from anyone. Yes, we do not want to be paranoid, but

He asked me for my email address, which I did give to him, and he offered to
help me with any problems that I may be having with the new phone. I explained
that it was not a good time for me just then so we ended the call. He sent me
an email shortly after this.

The email tells me how to check the data usage on my iPhone. He also gave me
instructions on how to make the phone ring longer.

Just now, as he had also told me would happen, I received a text message -
which I am meant to respond to rating his helpfulness.

Has anyone else had such a phone call or is this perhaps a scam? Hopefully not!

Looking forward to comments from the WAMUG group!

Hi Peta,

Good to be very careful about this sort of phone call. Apparently it is
genuine. I have never received one and had not heard of it.

Thanks for this Ronni.

While it is good to know this is not a scam, I am still puzzled why me?.
Other family members and friends who have purchased iPhone 4's recently have
not had any such approach.

Again, thank you for such a prompt response.

Have a great weekend,

Re: Telstra Mentor for Iphone

2011-01-13 Thread Glenn Nicholas

The web page clearly shows Telstra has this programme in place, and
they do say Our Telstra Mentor service gives you expert advice on how
to get the most out of your new Next G™ handset in a complimentary,
personalised one hour session. So it seems the 1 hour session should
be free.

Even though this session seems legitimate, I think Telstra has set
things up to invite abuse at some point in the future. Someone could
easily call up pretending to be a Telstra mentor, answer some
questions to build trust and then try for confidential info - perhaps
asking for login details or potentially credit card details. Social
engineering is a popular way of getting people to part with
confidential information - it makes it easier for scammers if
corporations teach their customers to trust unsolicited calls.

With identity theft such a major problem, if someone calls you out of
the blue and you have no way of knowing who they are, if it comes to
the point where they want you to disclose information you should ask
how to reach them via a company phone number you can check out
independently. For example, on the Telstra Mentor site they include
For more information on Telstra Mentor please call 1300 783 343. So
if you did get a call from a Mentor and they did ask you for any
information (email address included), maybe it would be better to call
the mentor back via that number.
