Re: WD ShareSpace vs iPhoto Library
Hi Brian, The WD ShareSpace supports afp as well as smb(CIFS), nfs and ftp - you might have to enable it though. I'd also recommend updating its firmware if you haven't already. This all might be unrelated though. I've been using one for a while - it's not the fastest but it works. Good luck, Chris. Re: Anyone know where I can get an unlocked iPhone 4 for outright purchase?
Hi Shay, The Perth Apple Store get stock sporadically - so you have to keep calling or dropping by - which is annoying however you might be lucky. I guess you've tried asking JB HiFi, NextByte Fonezone? Re Telstra I think you might have more luck with one of the suburban stores - but again stock is sporadic. Good luck, Chris. Re: Handsfree iPhone car kit? Tom Tom good anyone ?
Hey Martin, I'm using a TomTom Car Kit custom mounted with audio connected to the back of my head unit and power from behind the dash. It works really well but the base is an issue - I had to disassemble it to remove the suction cap so it's not very solid - I need to work on that - but looks better than a windshield mount. The TomTom unit has that interesting suction mount attached to its base - no gooseneck - and this could be an issue for some windscreens. It may not be as flexible as the Magellan RoadMate. Audio is great - direct connection is the way to go though, I've never found the quality of FM tuning to be all that good. Are you sure there is no way you can get RCA in? The built in GPS does make a difference. Charging the phone takes awhile especially when using TomTom software. Also of note the iPhone connects to the TomTom unit via Bluetooth for the speakerphone, controls on the Car Kit and I think the GPS as well - so this is interesting as my head unit also connects via Bluetooth. I purchased mine from the UK last year and it was only slightly cheaper than the Apple Store. Regards, Chris. We need: - hands-free phone calling - car audio play-thru (FM transmission as we don't have a direct audio input to the car stereo unfortuntely) - dashboard/windshield mount (rotatable for GPS apps) - in-car charging We've tried the Belkin TuneBase FM with Handsfree for iPhone and found the FM transmitter not that fantastic in our particular car, though it performed well in my sisters car, and our car cig lighter socket was a bit too low for the stalk to bring the iPhone up to a height that would make it useable for GPS software usage. We have a BlueAnt, Supertooth II bluetooth handsfree in our other car, which works well enough for hands-free calling, but it doesn't do anything else. I'm leaning towards the Tom Tom Car Kit for iPhone which ticks off on most items though doesn't do FM radio transmission so we'd need to work out some other option there. it's a leased car, so that makes it more difficult. Lloyd Hi, the reason to have your Mac Mini with EyeTV on a network is so that you have the program guide for recording programs easily. You just click on the program in the guide to set up the recording. If you are not on a network (either ethernet or wireless) which has access to the internet, you won't be able to use this feature, although as Daniel says, you don't need the internet to access the TV signal. You do get a small arial with the Eyetv device, but unless you are very lucky, you won't get much much of a signal without having it linked to your main household outdoor arial. The program guide I use is IceTV, and you pay a yearly subscription for the service. cheers, Susan. It's currently under construction in Hay Street, beside the Holiday Inn, where the Saigon Pastry House/Joint Venture used to be. Apple have gutted over the building and it looks like it will be your standard Apple Store with the old building facade. I was speaking to a construction worker a few weeks ago and he said it was a closely guarded secret who was moving in and that the fit out would be starting at the end of the week. Ifoapplestore posted the construction requests with Apple's name on them quite a while ago. Apple were also recruiting last year. So I'd say it will be open in time for the next iPhone launch. Hi Laura, I should have mentioned though that in all of my testing the external optical drives don't need to be Mac compatible. I purchased a cheap external USB DVD burner and it just works. Of course I can't guarantee that any drive will so you might want to buy locally, however the chances are pretty good that it will. Regards, Chris. My experience was: Order placed with Apple online store on 27/11/09 at the time of finalising the order it was showing: Ships: 7-10 business days Delivers: within 2-5 business days (after shipment) by Standard Shipping ie they were suggesting a final delivery date of 915 business days after order The Apple Store Order Acknowledgment email then advised: Ships: 11/12/2009 Delivers: 17/12/2009 ie they were predicting shipping at 10 business days and delivery 4 business days after shipping. (Obviously this was in stock in Sydney rather than shipping from China!) Other items ordered in this years TGI Friday annual special: Photoshop elements, Bento, Mobile Me Family Pack all three items separately shipped but with same delivery/timescale: Apple Store Order Acknowledgment email advice: Ordered:27/11/2009 Ships: within 24 hours Delivers: 30/11/2009 - 02/12/2009 Actual Delivery: Shipment Date: 30/11/2009 Delivery Date: 02/12/2009 HP PHOTOSMART B109A Apple Store Order Acknowledgment email advice: Ordered: 27/11/2009 Ships: 18/12/2009 Delivers: 22/12/2009 Actual Delivery: Shipment Date: 04/12/2009 Delivery Date: 08/12/2009 So, for me, Apple have made a habit of under-promising and over-delivering when it comes to efficient shipping. Re: VMWare Fusion $41 till 11.30am today
Well I've been using Parallels and Fusion on and off from the beginning initially as my main work PC running Office 2003/2007, corporate apps, Adobe design apps and for the testing of apps like SketchUp and SolidWorks. Each version of each app gets better and in some cases overtakes the other one. So earlier this year Parallels was slightly faster at most tasks than Fusion see this review: http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.25/25.04/VMBenchmarks/index.html That was with VMware Fusion 2.0.1. Fusion is now up to 2.0.5 so it's probably slightly faster than Parallels. In terms of features they are so similar. In the early versions Parallels interface was a bit nicer - kinda Tonka Toyified. Fusion has certainly caught up now though. Similarly VirtualBox is improving all the time, there was an update just the other week. Speaking of VirtualBox it is straightforward to use if nothing goes wrong. If it does you may have to do a bit of searching on the net or playing around to sort it out. I suppose this is where its downfall is. Parallels and VMware's support is pretty good - I've had to contact both and both have responded quickly. With VirtualBox being a free product you're on your own a little bit - but hey did I say it's free, and really impressive for a freebie. My colleagues set up VirtualBox on a complete novice to VMs iMac and he's really happy with it. Currently I'm running Parallels 4.0.3846 with Windows 7RC on Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and it's running really well. The only reason I'm using Parallels over Fusion is that it came as part of a MacUpdate Promo. Otherwise I would have gone for the Fusion offer this morning. I wouldn't consider gaming with these VMs however using Bootcamp on a MacPro is awesome... Hope this is helpful in some way - sorry for the lack of specifics I'm not in IT anymore. Regards, Chris. What, if any, would you rate as the particular pros/cons or points of difference of the three approaches - other than the obvious cost advantage of Sun's VirtualBox. I've only ever run Parallels 3.0 - just because it seemed to be the one everyone recommended at the time that I purchased it - I had a lot of trouble at the time upgrading my XP Pro VM (imported from Virtual PC) to SP2 but once I got that sorted (thank you Peter Hinchcliffe!) it seems to do OK so I didn't look any further. However, I suppose that at some point (SL upgrade?) I will need to look at upgrading from Parallels 3.0 - so I suppose that will be a good time to also look at the alternatives. The fix is listed on Mac OS X Hints here http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090225162441861 and they believe it's 10.5.6 that causes this. Here are their instructions, and all credit should go them: To fix this problem, make a copy of /Library/Widgets/Unit Converter.wdgt on your Desktop, Control-click on it and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu, then open the UnitConverter.js file in a text editor. Search for USD (with the quotes). There should be only one matching line: if (a.iso == USD) return -1; Delete this line. Then, delete the else at the start of the next line, i.e. change the line from this... else if (a.name b.name) return -1; ...to this... if (a.name b.name) return -1; Save the changes and close the document. I suggest keeping the original widget in /Library/Widgets, and installing the corrected version in ~/Library/Widgets, so that the system's version remains untouched. This fixed the AUD - USD problem - not sure about the others though Goodluck Chris. Re: Shareprice Dashboard/widget
Hi Aurora, Well to answer one of your questions you can display your widgets on your desktop by enabling the developer mode or by using an app like Amnesty. To enable dev mode, which is free, just type this into terminal: defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES Logout and back in, open dashboard click and hold a widget then close dashboard and the widget will stay with you - you might have to do this every time you log in though which you don't with Amnesty. Unfortunately I can only recommend a good forex widget: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/business/forexchartswidget.html Regards, Chris. Can I please have a recommendation for a Dashboard/Widget to monitor share prices, currencies etc? It doesn't have to be free - willing to pay :) I don't like the inbuilt one as it 'disappears' too much. I want this to be visible sitting in the background or as a transparency over other screens. I could not see a way to make the apple one do this. -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: iphone
Hi Ken, I have to clear a couple of things up here... The iPhone 3G has only been jailbroken, which means that if you jailbreak your iPhone you will have complete read/write access to the file system. It does not mean that it is unlocked for any carrier ie useable on any carrier. The iPhone 3G (current model) as of today can not be unlocked via a jailbreak. The only way an iPhone 3G can be unlocked is via a carrier, ie you call Telstra and they will charge you AU$150 to unlock the phone for use on other carriers' networks. Or you purchase an iPhone in Hong Kong (Italy too I believe) where they can come unlocked. There is a caveat here as some people who have purchased the iPhone in HK unlocked, then updated the firmware in the UK have found their phones to be relocked... Though that's another story. Oh and supposedly there are some chop shops in Vietnam that can take apart your iPhone and unlock it, however I this may still be a software unlock - but again another story. So what I'm saying is if you purchase an iPhone in the US, and ignoring the whole explanation that Mart gave which was v.good, you will have a locked iPhone that will essentially be an iPod Touch in Aus - as it won't work with Aus carriers unless ATT unlock it and I think you will have difficulty getting them to do that. And Telstra/Optus won't unlock it as it's not theirs... Sorry to pour cold water on this for you but it's not quite as straight forward as you might think. Up until this point I've had 4 (maybe 5, I've lost count) iPhones two first gens that I unlocked and two 3Gs one I Paid Telstra to unlock. I've sold all of them except for my current one which is locked... Good luck in your search the iPhone is definitely worth it, Chris. Re: External screen on MBP wont wake from sleep
Hi Dave, I'm experiencing the same issue I believe it to be driver related, hopefully 10.5.6 will fix it. My temporary solution is to disable sleep. I've had no problems since doing this - apart from the electricity bill... Regards, Chris. My new MBP (late 2008) MacOS 10.5.5 and my Apple 20in cinema display do not like each other at times - the display will not wake up from sleep frequently or will only give brief flashes of a disjointed screen. This is fixed by disconnecting then reconnecting the display. Does any one have any suggestions to fix this temporarily until Apple releases a patch, apart from the obvious one of resetting the sleep preferences in energy preferences so that the screen never sleeps? -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: iPhone - still only Optus selling unlocked ?
Yes the price for the unlock on Telstra is $150 - no exceptions. I put in a complaint with the TIO as I eventually purchased the phone outright from Telstra. However they just said it's a commercial decision and they can't do anything. So if you want one off plan and unlocked Optus is the way to go. Regards, Chris. That's the last I heard. Basically all I need is an unlocked handset, as it will be for use on Etislat www.etisalat.ae in the UAE. Optus FAQ states... - The iPhone 3G will be locked to the Optus Network. If you connect the iPhone 3G to a Post-Paid (on account) contract you are able to unlock the handset by calling Optus Customer Service. No unlocking fee is applicable. With Optus Pre-Paid an $80 fee applies if network locking is removed within the first 6 months from the activation date. Alternatively, the customer needs to have recharged up to the value of $80. - So I interpret this as that an unlocked version of the iPhone would cost me $80 more than buying the just the handset itself. Correct? Is there a cheaper option? I don't like the idea of being a guinea pig - there's gotta be someone out there who's tested this already, ie. an Optus-sold unlocked iPhone on a foreign network? Why is it that only Optus sell an unlocked version (if that is still the case)? Re: Booting PPC and Intel Macs externally
Hi Guys, This bit is not quite correct with 10.5, though it was the case with 10.4, PowerPC based Macs will boot OS X only from APM partition scheme volumes. lntel based Macs require the Intel flavour of OS X; PowerPC based Macs require the PowerPC flavour of OS X. as we boot PowerPC and Intel Macs with 10.5 GUID partitioned drives all the time. We've also booted PowerPC Macs with a 10.5 MBR partitioned drive - though I don't recommend it as it is quite slow and a bit buggy. Hi All, I need to sell one of my iPhones. Both come boxed with complete kits and are unlocked. Here are the details: 1 x 8GB iPhone unlocked with complete Invisible shield applied (http://www.invisibleshield.com/ smartphone/apple/iphone.php). The phone is in excellent condition though it has been used. Comes boxed and includes all accessories. $600 1 x 16GB iPhone unlocked new in box. This phone has never been used apart from unlocking. It's boxed and still has all protective plastic on it etc. $750 I've used the 8gb on Optus, Vodafone Telstra networks with prepaid SIMs. I recommend a Telstra NextG sim though as you can utilise the EDGE network which is much faster than GPRS. Oh and you can't use a 3 SIM as these do not work on 3G only networks. I can deliver it in the metro area or you can pick it up. I'll also be listing one of them on eBay on the weekend haven¹t decided which one yet. I thought I'd post here if anyone was interested though. If you have any questions just send me an email. Re: problems with iTunes purchased songs on reformatted mac
Hi Guys, Apple have a support article on how to authorise/deauthorise and deauthorise all machines here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93014 In a nutshell if you can still access the machine that has the authorised music you should be able to deauthorise via the Store menu in iTunes - choose deauthorise. If you can't access the machine you could wait till all 5 authorisations are used open iTunes go the Store option choose Account under the Quick Links section login and you will have a deauthorise all button - you can only use this once a year though. Re: Owners of unlocked iPhones hosed by software update
Hey All, Yep, I'm selling something else... My iPhone which is awesome - it just makes every other phone seem like a toy. Though that's not why I'm writing. I just wanted to comment that sure the new firmware 1.1.1 hasn't been unlocked, however that's just a matter of time. And really if you're going to be playing with an iPhone here then you have to be prepared for some 'development' time. Also Apple won't support you via warranty if they detect the mods. Which is to be expected. I doubt Apple Australia would provide warranty repair work on iPhone over here right now anyway even if it wasn't modified. So my iPhone runs really well on firmware 1.0.2 and I don't plan to move to the new firmware until it's 'ready' which is probably a good philosophy for software updates in general. It works just fine on Vodafone and Optus networks. And Telstra might be even better because they have the faster EDGE data networks rather than the GPRS of the others. ... Oh and yes, I'm going to be listing it on eBay on the weekend :-) Hope you all have a good weekend, Chris.
