Wanted - Intel MacBook, iMac or Mac Mini

2009-04-22 Thread Evers
Just checking if anyone is thinking of replacing their Intel MacBook,
iMac, or Mac Mini?

This is on behalf of Woodbury Boston Primary School in Torbay, near
Albany - see here for more info:

www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au

Some WAMUG members generously supported the school some time ago when
I was seeking older iMovie OSX 10.3 software.

This time we are hoping to source some affordable working upgrades to
our ageing network of eMacs. Our budget is modest but any Intel Macs
will be considered - I'm hoping to take the school on a giant leap
forward into the Intel/OSX 10.4 world, on a shoestring :-)

Re: Firewire hub

Hi Neil,

Good offer - thank you - I'm a big supporter of re-using/recycling.

Severin, you put out the call first so you have first option - if you
take up this one I will get a new one from Stewart at T4, otherwise I
am interested.

Just let me know.

Cheers,

It tends to get used now just as a firewire cable extender if I'm

If either of you wants to give me $40 for it, I can probably live
without it

It was working fine last time I used it (few weeks ago) and we would

Re: Firewire hub

2009-03-27 Thread Evers

Thanks Yvonne - this looks good.

To those who suggested daisy chaining, in the interests of energy
conservation I only switch on what I intend to use in a session, and I
have several plug play items that get moved around the house
(movie cameras, hard drives, with 6 users including me in 4 different
locations in the house) so a hub on the main computer helps meet both
these needs.

Re possible power surges, as Severin says the failures were at
different times, and in my case I got the hub second hand 3 or 4 years
ago so have no idea of age and usage so I'm not complaining.

Thanks to all.

Tony.

Digital camera advice

2008-06-02 Thread Evers

Greetings all WAMUGers,

Some advice/user experience please.

Our small primary school (Woodbury Boston Primary School -
www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au - some of you have been generous with
advice and support in the past) is about to purchase a digital still
camera. Requirements include good optical zoom - 8-10x - and
resolution 6+ megapixels minimum (lots of outdoor and action shots -
sailing etc, so good zoom essential). Largish screen would help
students ease of use. Easy interface to eMac OS 10.3.9 network
essential (although I've yet to see a USB camera that won't talk to
this system).

Budget is $600 or less. There is some bias toward Canon. The school
has had disappointing/frustrating recent experience with a Fuji
FinePix 90 (devours AA batteries, indifferent performance,
intermittent crashes - I think they got a lemon) although this is
helping to guide current purchase parameters.

Past experience suggests that cameras with dedicated lithium ion
rechargeable batteries (same as video cameras) perform better/last
longer/are more reliable between battery changes than those using AA
cells - any comments?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hello Matt WAMUG Mailing list members,

I would certainly like 'Reply to WAMUG List' implemented. WAMUG
Mailing list is a public mailing list, not a private mailing list,
anyone can subscribe and post messages.
For that reason alone, 'Reply to the Private email address' should
not be the default, the default should be back to WAMUG mailing list.
Keep the messages on list, so anyone else who has the same problem,
or in the future has a similar problem can follow the thread.

Re: OT: Solar Cells for house roof

2008-04-11 Thread Evers
The Sun Fair was excellent. Highlights for me were the electric
vehicle display and a test ride of a real electric motorcycle (not a
scooter or moped).

Re grid connected photovoltaic panels - the situation is different
depending on where you live in WA. In Perth the government rebate is
capped at $8,000 no matter how large the system you install. In the
south west (where the grid is, shall we say, a bit variable), one can
qualify for a rebate of 50% of ex-GST cost of supply and installation
up to 5 kilowatt/hour (residential) or 30 Kilowatt/hour (commercial/
industrial) grid connected capacity. This is via the state government
Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO), with I think federal
funding

details here
http://www.sedo.energy.wa.gov.au/pages/funding_rrep.asp

We have such a 5KW/hour system on our house that since August 2007
has averaged 25 KW/hours per day - 2-3 times our family's
requirements (5-6 people), with spare capacity going back into the
grid to power other people's Mac computers etc along with our own,
Cost was $52,000, reducing to $29,000 after rebate. At current energy
pricing, buy back of our electricity will cover our investment and
embodied energy in manufacturing, transport and installation in
approximately 15 years (expected operating life 20+ years). When
electricity prices inevitably rise, pay back becomes much shorter,
but given the time and opportunity costs involved (what else you
might do with the money - like earn interest) this isn't primarily a
money-making exercise as much as an ideology/sustainability one. We
will have a better picture when we have a couple of years of real
data to project from.

Having said that, the spare capacity from our system could be used to
charge an all-electric vehicle for the 40 kilometre commuter round
trips that are 90% of our travel (we live just outside Albany),
significantly reducing fossil fuel usage and carbon emissions - thus
my interest in electric vehicles at the Sun Fair. This would then
offset some of the opportunity costs and the savings in fuel (and
vehicle maintenance) would result in an earlier pay back, thus
improving the financial aspects.

The advantages of grid connected photovoltaics for me include:
- proven maturing technology - it works
- easy expansion/modification/upgrade as innovation occurs
- decentralised and reliable
- it is do-able, accessible, and empowering for the individual. We
can't quickly force government and business to embrace renewable
energy, but we can use their subsidies, products, and resources to
make it happen anyway
- financial independence - energy prices WILL increase both
substantially and soon
- flexibility control - how and when do I want to use the energy
produced

- grid connection matches supply with demand

In short, in my view go grid connected solar wherever and whenever
you can.

Hope this was of interest.
Cheers
Tony Evers

Re: Replacement for G3 Powerbook adapter

2007-12-30 Thread Evers

Hi Greg,

That adaptor looks OK - should work although like you I am unsure re
the plug.

However, I do have a working Apple adaptor from a PowerBook Duo that
I also used with a G3 clamshell iBook that used the yo-yo adapter, so
it should suit your PowerBook. (DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS WILL FIT?).
All the electrical specs are correct.

If it is suitable it can be yours for $15 + postage (should be
cheaper from Albany than Hong Kong.

Close iDVD and update to iDVD '08 (7.0.1). If the issue persists,
follow the
steps below and keep your iLife '08 installation disc nearby.

Erase the following folders from your hard drive:
/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 1
/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 2
/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 3
/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 4

Erase the following folder from your home directory:
~/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.idvd
Note: The tilde (~) represents your home directory.

Reopen iDVD '08, create a new project and wait for the Updating
themes

progress bar to complete before quitting the application again. You
only
need to do this once.
To Reinstall Themes 1-4:

Insert the iLife '08 installation disc.
Open the iLife '08 installer package.
In the Installation Type window, select Customize.
Expand the iDVD checkbox and make sure iDVD Extra Content is
selected.

Deselect all other checkboxes and proceed with the installation.
or
Open iDVD '08 and open a project.
Click Themes.
From the Themes drop-down menu, choose Old Themes.
Select any of the faded-out theme thumbnails.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install all of the themes
originally
erased by using Software Update or the iLife '08 installation disc.

Hi Rod,

iLife doesn't automatically install with Leopard.
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5
Leopard.
Upgrading to iDVD 6.0.4 or iDVD 7.0.1 should enable you to run

iDVD 6.0.4 was released just after Leopard:

MS Snapshot file format

2007-08-07 Thread Evers
I have received an email with an attachment in MS Snapshot format

I followed the following advice but of course Snapshot Viewer
download is a .exe application so won't run.

The attached document is in Microsoft Report Snapshot format. If you
have Microsoft Office 2000 installed, the Snapshot Viewer will be
installed when you try to open this file. If you do not have Microsoft
Office 2000 installed you can download a copy of the Snapshot Viewer
from http://www.miesoftware.com/downloads3rdparty.htm .

I have requested the sender to use MS Word or PDF formats and resend,
but this requires a timely response from a bureaucracy.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Airport Express user feedback

Re: The Future of WAMUG

2007-06-12 Thread Evers

Jude, you have captured my sentiments re WAMUG quite accurately.

As a network neophyte I have received much valuable assistance and
guidance for the benefit of our tiny independent school network (and
with a couple of home computer conundrums as well).

A significant difference for me is that much of the advice/solutions
are real world, from actual experience. This is quite different
from help pages, technical sites etc, and from retailer/wholesaler
advice, which quite reasonably usually carries some commercial agenda.

Living near Albany and choosing to avoid Perth whenever possible (25
years in Sydney quenched my need for metropolises), I will never get
to a WAMUG meeting, but if continuation of the group and list depends
on modest annual financial support from we remoters then I suggest
we make it so - and I will be jostling with Jude to be first in the
virtual queue to pay up.

What do others think?

Cheers
Tony Evers

That can mean actual physical people come over to your home and
help you, we can buy and sell equipment locally, and we can
advertise about or contribute to local causes that need help.

Not to mention that the list is stuffed full of total gurus who
really know what they are talking about and freely offer thier help
to the the lost and bewildered (of which I have been guilty).

I've never paid membership because I've never been able to find out
how to if you don't go to meetings, even though I've asked several
times on the list how to do it. If there was a way to pay remotely
I would be first in line.

If WAMUG went missing it would leave a hole .. or maybe take away a

OSX 10.3 licences

2007-06-06 Thread Evers
I'm confused! I can't make sense of the Apple website in trying to
find out how to purchase OSX 10.3 licences. Everything refers to 10.4
and sneak previews of 10.5.

I volunteer to look after the IT network at a small (currently 50
students) not for profit non-aligned independent primary school on
rural Torbay Hill, west of Albany (more info see revitalised website
at www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au). Some of you will remember your
generosity during 2005/2006 in providing iLife 04/05 discs so that we
could get some meaningful iMovie work happening on our OS9 network (I
certainly remember it - thank you).

We have recently moved to eMac based OSX 10.2 network (favourable
second hand purchase from a larger educational institution) and
everything is working well. We have the opportunity to move to OSX
10.3, but need to obtain 30 x 10.3 licences to legitimise this. I
can't find reference to 10.3 in Apple Store etc.

Cost is an issue (low socio-economic demographic). Can anyone advise
as to how I can obtain licences? Does anyone have no longer needed
OSX 10.3 at an affordable price? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in anticipation,

Re: Renewable Energy Questions

2007-05-30 Thread Evers
Sorry to go off-topic here, although there is a computer-related
issue at the end of all this.

I'm hoping WAMUG members may have some information and/or experience
with installing and using individual residence renewable grid-
connected power systems. I'm looking at putting the largest solar
array I can afford on our roof (4 or 5 kW) to both supply our own
electricity needs and sell back excess to the SW grid when the sun is
shining, and purchase energy as needed when the sun is not out/at night.

We live in Albany (where despite myth the sun shines quite a lot) on
a due north-facing hillside with over 100 square metres of roof area
angled at 20 degrees, so the physical circumstances are positive. We
already practice such energy reduction strategies as a 6-person
household with a keen interest in electrical gadgetry comfortably
support, but more work can be done on this. High energy demand
activities such as cooking and hot water are supplied by gas (solar
hot water is next on the upgrade list).

As some of you will know, a government rebate of 50% of the ex-GST
cost of qualifying systems makes this worth considering (although
don't do it just on economic grounds since because we don't pay the
real impact cost of electricity you will grow very old and grey
waiting to recoup all your outlay - we are doing this as a walking
the talk greenhouse gas reduction initiative.) - there is a lot of
information at http://www1.sedo.energy.wa.gov.au/pages/funding_rrep.asp

and info on Synergy's buyback scheme at
http://www.synergyenergy.com.au/pdf_documents/Support_Documents/
RENEWABLE_ENERGY_BUYBACK_SCHEME_%28REBS%29_INFORMATION_PACK.pdf

What I want to know is if anyone is prepared to share their
experience - any unanticipated problems, unexpected costs, and what
user experience is like of installation, commissioning, and using
such a system? A particular question is the relative inertness/
safety of the materials used in the manufacture and mounting of the
array with respect to water, as we collect all the water that falls
on our roof for domestic consumption, including drinking and cooking.
No worries with supply (it rains a lot down here, even with climate
change trends) but we do want to ensure that the water is safe.

And the computer connections? The smart inverters used to convert and
control the electricity generated have an output to a data logger and
computer so you can track performance, output, trends, efficiency etc
in all kinds of classy graphs, charts etc. As well I am thinking of
smart programming to control shut down of non-essential electricity
outlets in the event of grid blackouts, thus prolonging the battery
bank life for essentials such as lighting and refrigeration.

Thanks in anticipation.

Undo Empty Trash Command

2007-04-09 Thread Evers

Help!
Is there any way of undoing the empty trash command? I just deleted
everything on my desktop in error (yes I know I shouldn't keep stuff
there but I was moving lots of things between disks and flashdrives
and I moved to trash and emptied before checking what was selected -
purely human error.
I have not done any other commands following this blunder in the hope
that something can be done.

G5 2 GHz PowerPC iMac running 10.4.8
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I have an LC430 (very early '90's - will check the actual date)
running 24/7 since January 2000 as internet server on a dial-up
connection network at a small (50 student, 25 computers) independent
primary school near Albany. It was in everyday use as a desktop word
processor before that and has been completely robust and reliable in
both roles.

As a footnote, using Macs as internet server and e-mail server has
been an effective, and the only, protection from virus attack to the
school IT network over the past 6 years - such a different story from
Windows-based internet interfaces.

I should also mention that at the same primary school I am just now
retiring 21 x G3 350MHz iMacs that have been in full student use
since Feb 2000 - 16 are still fully functional and reliable, 5 have
developed a range of faults with: CRT colour and stability, CD
drives, power supply. The 400MHz G4 server that has run faultlessly
24/7 since January 2000 was turned off and replaced last week - not a
bad run.

By way of clarification, the redirect from old to new e-mail address
is an agreement between Westnet (same address since 1995) and
BroadBandnet (new address) as Westnet is unable to provide high speed
access (ADSL, ISDN) to my home, whereas BBNet's radio high speed

Re: Wireless Mighty Mouse

I too had to return my first Mighty Mouse - same problem with
scrolling. Local Apple outlet T4 Technology (Albany), happily swapped

A minor word of warning...

We are on our second (tailed) mighty mouse.

We had to return the first one as the track ball was driving us nuts!
It (the track ball) became very unreliable within a couple of weeks.
A quick search revealed we were not alone with this problem.
In particular ours had major issues scrolling down. The other 3
directions were unaffected.

Some quarters suggested it just needed a clean, we followed
recommended instructions but the effect was short lived, we were
soon cleaning it every day or so.

This soon became unacceptable as you can imagine.

We took it back to nextbyte where we actualy had to work on them to
be given a replacement, in fact we wanted credit to buy a M$ mouse
but they ruled this out.

The replacement *Mickey Mouse* has fared better but we have already
seen a sign of it beginning to have the scrolling issue again.
Couple this with the unique way one must perform right-clicks and this
mouse looses a little lustre in my books.

Almost $80 was a lot of money for a less-than-perfect mouse.
The trouble is; you know the bastards have you as soon as you have
scrolled sideways in the Finder while in coulumn-view, damn you
Apple! ;)

In short, when it's good, it's very very good but when it's bad
it's horrid.

Have fun

Re HP 8150 - for more modest printer needs (not as fast but smaller
than a microwave oven) the HP 2100TN is bullet-proof - I have had one
networked for 50 users/20 terminals in a Primary School for 6+ years,
serviced once (staple jammed inside), and have purchased 2 more at
auction, $30 each with almost full toner, for use in home business
desktop publishing. I have also had much success with other HP models
from auction ($10-$20 each) for conventional home use, and of course
the toner refills are cheap and last a very long time - beats inkjet
for black white every time!

the size of a washing machine. I have had the previous model for 5
