numbers
Hi Everyone I'm using numbers at the moment and would like to know if it is possible to do the same thing in Excel or export it to excel and have the same formulas. I use numbers for cuttinglists in cabinetmaking. On one sheet I have different tables...one for length ,,,one for heightone for depth ...in total 5 tables on one page From these 5 tables the cuttinglists are created for all the cabinets. I tried to do a copy in excel but it looks so different. The question is 1.: Does excel allow multiple tables on one page 2. : Can i have another sheet with reference to the first sheet with all the calculations? Thanks for all the answers Martin PS: Typical Apple numbers is so easy to learn and intuitive Tried Excel a year ago , but did not enjoy it very much -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: numbers
Hi Neil Yes it is about sharing in the long term with other cabinetmakers who do sometimes work for me. But I can still scan and e-mail if necessary. It was good to hear that ex/import excel-numbers is complicated,,,so I do not need to invest any time in this. Thanks for all the helpful answers On 19/11/2009, at 10:22 AM, Neil Houghton wrote: Hi Martin, Excel is hugely powerful and can do all that and more - I've been using it for many years and still there are a huge amount of features, formulas etc that I haven't even touched on. Typically that's why some people find it harder to use - it's one thing to know Excel can do it but sometimes it's less than obvious how! With more specific reference to your questions: 1) Yes, of course, you can have as many tables as you like on a page. A page in Excel is just a matrix of rows and columns - put a border around a selection of cells and you have a table - put a border around another selection of cells and you have a second table - you fill the relevant cells with data (text, numbers, dates etc) and create formulas in other cells to work with the data. 2) Yes Excel will cross-reference (link) between cells across multiple sheets and across multiple files (workbooks) - in fact you can combine all of these in a formula - ie a cell could contain a formula which referenced: - a cell in the same table - a cell in a different table on the same page (it's not another table to Excel, it's just a cell in a different location) - cells from different worksheets in the same workbook - cells from different worksheets in a different workbook In other words, it can reference cells from any combination of tables/worksheets/workbooks. I use this linking all the time - for example I create a Tax Workbook every year with separate worksheet for different areas eg one for share dividends, another for share capital gains, another for depreciation, another for deductions and so on (several more!) then I have a summary worksheet which basically just has the top level info needed for my tax return and which pulls all this info from the various detailed worksheets. So each tax year is covered by a single workbook containing multiple worksheets - but there is also info which needs to flow from year to year - for example on the depreciation worksheet, the closing value of one year carries over to become the opening value of the subsequent year - so this becomes a link between different workbooks. I looked at numbers a while back and although it can open Excel files and save in the Excel format I found that the conversion was far from transparent - eg If I opened one of my Excel files in numbers, saved it as a numbers file, re-opened it in numbers and saved it as an Excel file then re-opened this file in Excel it looked very different from my original file! So, yes, Excel will do what you want it to do but, given that your cutting lists are very simple (in terms of spreadsheet functions) and you have it all organised in numbers (which, as you say, is very intuitive) and given that you tried Excel a year ago and didn't enjoy it much - then why do you WANT to do it in Excel? I mean, I'm very happy staying with Excel because: - I have years of experience working with it - I have much time invested in many existing spreadsheets - I have to exchange spreadsheets with people (eg the accountants) who use Excel. However for anyone coming new to spreadsheets the only reasons I can think of to pick Excel over numbers would be: - you need to share spreadsheets frequently with Excel users - you need a more powerful set of tools including some not yet covered by numbers. In Apple Mail, I have Rules set for approx. 50 Mail Boxes, with Multiple conditions and Actions. So all my important emails are immediately in the correct mail boxes.I also use Notes To Do Items in Apple Mail. I would be in a complete mess if I didn't use Rules Notes To Do Items ;-) Extract below taken from Take Control of Apple Mail in Leopard (still applies to Mail in Snow Leopard):Automate Mail With Rules:Mail applies rules (sometimes called filters) automatically to incoming messages. Among other things, rules can highlight messages or move them to specific mailboxes based on criteria like the name of the sender or the nature of the message content. For example, you can sort messages from mailing lists into a mailbox you only check when you have time, while highlighting messages from your boss in a special color. Notes:Notes can hold any sort of information (styled text, graphics, and so on) and are automatically stored in a special mailbox without your having to actually mail yourself a message; you can edit these notes whenever you want. Notes behave just like regular messages for the purposes of searching and smart mailboxes.End of Extract: A couple of links that might help you understand Apple Mail what it can do:This is an old article but still applies to Smart Mailbox:http://www.macworld.com/article/46639/2005/09/octworkingmac.htmlhttp://email.about.com/od/macosxmailtips/Mac_OS_X_Mail_Tips_Tricks_and_Secrets.htmhttp://www.macworld.com/article/134932/2008/08/mailrules.html?lsrc=mwhints Cheers,Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo2.4 GHz / 4GB / 800MHz / 500GBOS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard On 23/10/2009, at 12:33 PM, Neil Houghton wrote: Hi Martin, In Entourage, I just use “rules” - I set up folders (and sub-folders where appropriate) and just set-up rules to file as appropriate – eg: If “from” is *...@acme.com, move to folder “acme” (same with “to” *...@acme.com) The mail is filed even before I read it - so at a glance I can see which unread mail is in an “important” folder and which can be looked at later. Let us know what it shows. - Do you have any other firewire device you can try on both computers, in turn, just to check that the firewire ports ARE working on both machines. Hi ronni I can go everywhere on the internet and have connection,I'm connected with a Linkstar S2 modem to a satellite dish with broadbandnet. Re: NAB Banking
Hello Everyone I have been using internet banking for the last 4 month without problems ,then suddenly last Friday it wasn't possible to do anything. It didn't matter firefox3.0.3 or safari 3.1.2 .I can log in into NAB,but at some stage the new page doesn't open. Can be the first page (10 of 12 items downloaded) or if this page opened proper ( happened only once) then the next page accountbalances doesn't open .Safari says timed out , Firefox says Error line 706. Myob again
Hi and thanks to everyone who answered my questions regarding Myob.I have been thinking about the various scenarios and came up with following idea. As I'm using the workshop mac solely for timebilling. and the officemac for everything else(including timebilling)...is it possible to only export the timebilling from the workshop and import it to the office mac.,,Then use these data for billing and so on and keep backups only from the officemac? On top of it -but not necessary is it possible to keep these updates on the workshop mac under a different user?=workshopmac to run in administrator for backups and limited user for timebilling. good idea or nonsense have a nice sunday everyone Martin -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: myobanswer to Glenn
Hi Glen is multi user mode that I do changes on different computers- at a different or same time - without updating the other one?So that basically both companyfiles need updating in different locations in their companyfile? Martin On 24/09/2008, at 6:59 AM, Glenn Nicholas wrote: Martin, If you had the same file open from two computers at the same time, and made changes .. maybe there would be problems. But as Susan says, if you makes changes on one computer, close it and make changes on another, there shouldn't be an issue. Our MYOB file is used on our Mac, goes to the book keeper for a Windows holiday, comes back updated and back into service on our computer again. No problems, the same file works on Windows and Mac. But trying to use MYOB files in 'multi user' mode would be a different matter. Glenn. 2008/9/24 Susan [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Martin, I'm using MYOBs AccountEdge on different computers. I just bring the data file across to the machine I'm currently working on - sometimes even email it to myself, and it works as normal. I'm not trying to sync it, of course, I just make sure I have the one with the latest updates with me. It could be on an external hard drive. I'm not sure what the person meant when they said there 'will be a mess' - that just sounds silly. I've been doing this for years. The data file doesn't get corrupted by moving it to another machine. cheers, Susan.
