You say that there is cabling from the garage to "other places" in the house – from your description, these are phone outlets rather than ethernet outlets and you then connect from this wall socket to the DSL port on the modem? More than one phone outlet means that there would be at least one splitter somewhere to split the signal to the various phone outlets. The splitter(s) could be in the garage or in the ceiling and could well be the problem – you really need the modem connection to the NBN box to be as direct as possible. I suspect the simplest/easiest solution is to have the router plugged directly into the NBN box in the garage and then setup the wireless network of the router so everything connects to that – you would need to check that you get good wireless coverage from the garage to wherever you need it in the house (depending on the house size/construction you might need a wireless extender or a modem with better wireless performance. If you need to have the modem elsewhere (eg in the study) make sure you have a single good connection between there and the NBN box – how easy this is to achieve really will depend on the actual physical configuration and accessibility of your existing network/cabling. Re: [WAMUG] Iinet/Westnet/TPG/internode etc stopping email address hosting
Yes. I’m with Westnet…20 years. They sent an email in June about it. I also contacted the Messaging Company, but apart from an acknowledgment that’s all for now. I’m trying to decouple all the people I use that address for. I’m hoping the year’s grace will allow me to track everything that is connected to my westnet address…not always easy because some firms require a recovery email different from your login one. Possibly an email will come later on perhaps?) Apparently iinet/TPG and all it’s subsidiaries (Westnet, Internode etc) have decided they are no longer going to host their customer’s emails. (And new customers signing up are not given an @ISP email address). They are moving it over to another business where they (the ISP) are apparently paying for it for a year (up to Sept 2024 from what I can gather), then after that if you then want to still keep using your @isp email address, then you will have to pay for it. I haven’t seen any plans as yet, but a few things I read said it could be “from $3.99 per email address per month). - though doesn’t show what the quota would be. Some other people had said to budget about $60 a year to keep the email address. The “notice” is on all the ISP websites, so for example on the main iinet home page (and same for Westnet, TPG, Internode etc), all have a link to information about it. [5][7]https://help.iinet.net.au/iinet-email-messaging-company Even the “new” company taking over (The Messaging Company), website's is fairly sparse on information. Definitely going to be a bit of wake up call for a lot of people. Who may have an @isp address for 20+ years, then find if they want to keep it they now have to pay. And I’m sure the internet plans won’t see a price decrease for the money saved on not supplying/hosting email addresses. Hey, I could be wrong,…but, well….time will tell. (I have an @iinet address that I’ve had for about 22+ years that I’ve been with them - not that I use it very much….but it’s there). I know I have quite a lot of clients that use their @isp address, so definitely going to be a change for a lot of people. Another good reason to have a domain name I guess, or a “free” email address like @iCloud.com, @[8]gmail.com etc- then you can change ISPs without having to tell everyone your email address has changed. (As an aside, the price is about “normal” - as I looked at some of the “email only” hosting plans I have for clients and a 10GB plan is $60 a year per mailbox) Definitely will be something to watch and see what happens with it. Thought I’d post to the list as possibly others may not have seen or been aware of this. :) Kind regards Daniel --- Daniel Kerr MacWizardry p : 0414 795 960

Re: [WAMUG] FTTP and ISPs…not Apple
Hi Daniel, Thanks for jour very full answer. Cheers Rosemary Spark On Wed, 12 Jul 2023 at 19:06, Daniel Kerr via WAMUG <[1]wa...@lists.wamug.org.au> wrote: Hi Rosemary Without know exact details, but if it’s similar to mine situation (which it sounds like it), technically neither side are actually “telling lies”. When NBNCo have been going through certain areas and doing the FTTP upgrades, they only have “some” ISP’s that seem to have early access to this “faster NBN”. Whereas iinet/Westnet dont seem to be one of the ISP’s with access to these upgrades. So when they look it up, in the iinet/Westnet/TPG system, your area probably isn’t available to go faster on their network. And NBNCo who do say the upgrade is available, in the “small print” - it’s only with some ISPs. This is the same sort of thing I’ve found. Because I’m signed up to NBNCo newsletter and info for my area, I got an email from saying “faster internet is available” But iinet tell me,..no I can’t get faster internet. So they’re both actually correct. As far as iinet are concerned for their “access”,..they can’t offer anything faster. But if I go with a different ISP,…then I can actually get faster. I just found the email from them,..which says,.. "Hi Daniel, As you have registered for updates, we’d like to let you know that your location may be able to upgrade to nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) if you order an nbn powered plan based on nbnHome Fast or higher◊." Then a button I click that says “Check out the list of participating providers” - which loads this page [2]https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/more-fibre/find-a-p articipating-provider And Westnet and iinet (for whatever reason) aren’t listed as a participating provider. For the time being I’ve stuck with iinet and use their NBN100 plan,….as I’ve always felt a bit loyal to them to stay. But with some of the newer ISP’s nothing offering better plans (and sometimes better pricing), I’ve been weighing it up to change as well. I was looking at the Aussie Broadband plans, as they tend to get good reviews and always seem to be ranked quite high for reliability, cost, service etc. (I wouldn’t touch dodo with a barge pole for another example,…lol. Had some many customers been with them that had issues and left). The one downside to moving obviously is losing your email address. But I believe iinet and Westnet still offer an “email only” service. (I know they previously had this service,..so I assume they still do. Haven’t checked for a while). You used to be able to pay $25 a year to keep your email address. So you then don’t have to go round and tell everyone your new address and lose access to your email address. (I don’t actually really use my @iinet address a lot, but I’d still like to keep it if I did change. I had considered going to the Aussie Broadband NBN1000 plan,. But it’s another $50 a month. So I didn’t really go much further then look and dream. lol. So as mentioned without knowing “exact” details, that would be my take on it anyway. The best place I find to see what you’re able to get is the actual NBNCo website. As they’re the ones who do or change the infrastructure. So normally their information is most up to date. If you go to [3]https://www.nbnco.com.au - then put in your address to check. It will advise you what you can get on your premises. I also think some of the companies are wearing the cost of the “$0 upgrade cost to upgrade to fibre” - in the hope of perhaps getting new customers and building their customer base. And perhaps iinet/Westnet didn’t want to wear the extra cost of it. But I’m only guessing there - I could be completely wrong. Hope something there helps. [WAMUG] FTTP and ISPs…not Apple
Hi there, I received a glossy flyer in the mail saying that FTTP fibre to premises is available in my area, listing various isp to contact about the upgrade. I checked on the nbnco website and it indicated my address was able to be upgraded. We’re with Westnet (taken over by iiNet, taken over by TPG) and have been for many (20) years. Home page for accounts and email is still Westnet. Anyway no indication that TPG was included in the upgrade. I rang Westnet ( got a woman obviously based somewhere else) saying FTTP was not available at my address, after keeping me on hold for several minutes. I checked the only upgrade available on the website is for 5G…not the best fit. So who is telling lies? Do I go with another ISP? What is other people’s experience? So. driver error. When you go into Recovery mode there is not an additional option after Disk Utility. However, f you go to the top Menu there is a Utilities option...stuck right at the top. That's where you find the Security Start Utility. How I didn't see it the first five times I don't know. Sorry...feel very silly! All photos are also stored on my computer, then backed up with Time Machine and also onto two separate disks using Carbon Copy Cloner. I have found the way to create a new library, but when I try to import photos from the large library, I am blocked access as it is being shared with iCloud. My thought is that I stop the sharing with iCloud, then import the photos. Reconnect the original library to iCloud and delete them. [WAMUG] mystery ...one external drive not appearing
Hi there, I have a mystery. The backup external drive (uses Carbon Copy Cloner) no longer appears in the sidebar or on the desktop. I first went to access the drive, but it wasn't there so I pulled it out thinking it had become disconnected. So I got the message..don't pull out without disconnecting. Obviously, it was connected...just not showing up. I've disconnected and re-connected properly a number of times. The preferences to see external drives are on and the other external drives turn up as they should. The only way I can access it is to go to Carbon Copy Cloner and select the drive and use the Show in Finder command. I can also see it in Disk Utility. This happened on my old (Macbook Pro 2017) computer and is now happening on this new one. (Macbook Air 2022) I obviously have restarted and closed down the old computer a number of times and similarly on the new computer. If all the drives didn't appear I would think it was a glitch in the preferences. Anybody got any ideas? Ah yes, I got muddled...I thought it was the latest of course it isn't but it looks like this computer doesn't update to Ventura. My "newer" computer is stuffed. it's so full it won't delete things, so I can't run anything from the external drive. I do have backups. [WAMUG] Resetting author
Hi there, My husband’s computer has set me up as the author instead of him. Don’t know why. Is there a way to set up Automator to change the author name? This’ll is on multiple word and pages documents. Otherwise it’s going to be a long process to do it individually. Complication is that now Get info on Pages documents no longer even shows the author. Re: [WAMUG] Repurposing computer?
Hi all, Thanks to Kevin After formatting I handed my husband’s old MacBook Pro over to Kevin who will magic it into new life! Hooray! Someone will be able tu have a computer who would otherwise do without. Ruari Jack’s 2013 computer will live again. The computer was half full when checked but said it was out of memory. And wouldn’t even empty its recycle bin. Être Check said hard drive failing…and that it was obsolete! Even another re-format wasn’t going to fix it! Time for a new computer! Now he is the proud owner of a new MacBook Air, it arrived for days early! Once again, thanks to WAMUG and it’s experts! [WAMUG] Problem on my end re meetings
I was puzzled not to get a notification about the June meeting and no answer to my question about it. Part of the mystery is solved when I went to the wamug archive and found two messages I never saw. One about the June meeting and one answering my question about it. So I have thousands of messages I don’t want and 2 I would have liked to have seen. But where those messages went I don’t know ….maybe spam. That will teach me to check there! Now it's 64 bit I can't update to Catalina because there's not enough room 11.4 GB apps; 8.41 GB Docs; 8.34 GB photos and 81to 102 of system files. I have re-started a number of times started in safe mode tried to delete logs and caches that I can find that I don't want looked at activity monitor but can't see anything obvious Nothing has made any difference. flakey wifi suddenly
Hi all, Recently we had an issue with the wifi. After phone calls etc an NBN technician came out and long story short a cord had been left out of the node along the street and someone had cut it (maybe with a lawnmower). Anyway, he fixed it, tested that the internet was working and left. Unfortunately, I soon found that the VOIP phone was not working. However, while talking to the (westnet) iinet person and after many attempts, and re-sets etc we finally got it to work. However, since then the wifi keeps dropping out. Not the wifi from the iinet modem but the wifi through the TimeCapsule. The Timecapsule is connected to the Gateway by ethernet cable. It's possible with all the re-sets and set-ups something was added or deleted from the previous setup but I don't know what. I've had a good look through the setup guide for the iinet gateway, and the TimeCapsule setup guide and airport utility, but am no wiser. Anybody have any clues? TimeCapsule 2 TB We've had it for quite a while now, can't be sure when TimeCapsule software 7.8.1 Airport Utility 6.3.9 iinet modem TG-789 Gateway Cheers Rosemary Spark PO Box 781 South Fremantle WA 6162 Australia Phone: + 61 8 6397 6822 Mobile: 0414268043 MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) Catalina 10.15.7 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml> Guidelines - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Settings & Unsubscribe - <http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug>
very puzzled.
Hi there, I keep receiving a message saying my disc is almost full. When I go to the storage section it says only 859mb out of 121 gb is free. 103.77GB is allocated to system files. This seems excessive. The library folder has 86gb alone. I have deleted a couple of large backup files but not sure what else to do. I'm keeping this running Mojave because I'm running Family Tree Builder 32 bit (until the 64 bit one comes out) and Dreamweaver CS6 as for the amount of use I now get out of it it's not worth asubscription. hard drives not mounting
Hi, We are having problems mounting hard drives in Catalina 10.15.6, With me it's spotty. ie some hard drives will mountsometimes. Others not at all. (I've Macbook Pro 13" 2017) Unfortunately on my husband's computer none will mount. (he has early 2013) In Disk utility sometimes the container loads but not the interior which is grayed out. Can't mount or repair. I've reset the PRAM and SMC multiple times. I've used terminal to diskutil list, then diskutil info on the disks, then ejected and re-inserted but still won't mount. So I can't even erase/reformat (even if I wanted to) Rosemary Spark PO Box 781 South Fremantle WA 6162 Australia Phone: + 61 8 6397 6822 Mobile: 0414268043 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml> Guidelines - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Settings & Unsubscribe - <http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug>

Re: internet connectivity problems
Thanks for your detailed answer. I tried what I could. The wifi with or without the modem connection to the time capsule is just as flaky. Speeds vary between 14 and 47 within minutes of each other either way. (Our NBN connection is meant to be 50) We haven't moved the modem at all or added any other equipment near it. The cordless phone is connected to the modem as we have Voip, but that hasn't changed at all. internet connectivity problems
Hi, We have multiple computers, iphone and ipads. The last few days our wifi keeps "Looking for networks" every couple of seconds. That by itself might not be a problem but the wifi drops out over and over again. I tried to join a zoom meeting and I got kicked out 3 times in 6 minutes. If you try to run a video it stops and whirls and hiccups, goes again and then stops again. Things I've done so far. 1. re-started computers etc 2. re-started modem (iinet broadband gateway) and old time capsule 3. Used Airport Utility to update Time Capsule software to latest 7.8.1 4. Used Wireless Diagnostics to check performance. Last night all parameters (Rate, Quality and Signal) were mountain ranges, this morning for a bit they all were relatively straight. Just now there are straight bits in Rate then steep mountains 5. run the wifi just from the modem (because the time capsule is old) 6. Checked Westnet outages web page, it says there's a major cable that's been broken under the sea, it's being worked on. 7. turned off and on wifi in menu bar in settings (some people online said it would fix..it didn't) 8. turned off bluetooth (some people online said it would fix..it didn't) Rosemary Spark PO Box 781 South Fremantle WA 6162 Australia Phone: + 61 8 6397 6822 Mobile: 0414268043 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml> Guidelines - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Settings & Unsubscribe - <http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug>

Problem opening files
My husband is still running Mojave 10.4.6 on his Macbook 13inn Early 2013 model. A really weird problem has arisen. He can't open* any* file or folder in any programme (Mac or otherwise) with his mouse or trackpad without going to File>>Open or in Calendar>> Edit Event). He's re-started his machine; installed a new mouse, but he (and I ) are out of ideas at this point because it's such a strange problem. Photos woes
Both my husband and I have macbooks which had run out of space because of large Photos libraries. We inherited an iMac so decided to move both libraries on to it. I've spent the last month with PowerPhotos creating separate libraries in 5 year blocks, trying to maintain albums etc. However now I've done this the Photos libraries still are extremely slow to do anything at all. Moving, changing titles, editing etc. Even opening the info pane can take 5 minutes. Has anyone found a better program ( quicker!!) to organise and edit photos. iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015) running Mojave 10.14.5 Rosemary Spark PO Box 781 South Fremantle WA 6162 Australia Phone: + 61 8 6397 6822 Mobile: 0414268043 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml> Guidelines - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Settings & Unsubscribe - <http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug>
Strange behaviour of my macbook
Hi there, I've paid my dues for 2019 today...better late than never! For some time my macbook has been behaving weirdly. All of these behaviours together...or one at a time! 1) it shuts down for no reason 2) it asks to sign into icloud (when already signed in) Then sends messages to my iphone and ipad saying a new device has been connected 3) it comes up with a series of boxes saying xxx has to connect to login keychain. I have to enter my login password into these over and over again. Re: iMac problem
Hi there, I thought I explained that I did already boot to Recovery and re-installed high sierra but it made no difference. Yeah...the lack of backup is going to be ...difficult. My husband’s uncle didn’t consider it at all. Lesson learned I hope Rosemary On Fri, 22 Dec 2017 at 22:43, Ronda Brown <ro...@mac.com> wrote: > Hello again Rosemary, A link showing how to > > Reinstall macOS Sierra or High Sierra > > > http://osxdaily.com/2016/10/12/reinstall-macos-sierra/ > > Ronni Brown’s iPad Pro 12.9-inch 256GB > > > On 22 Dec 2017, at 10:02 pm, Ronda Brown <ro...@mac.com> wrote: > > Hello Rosemary, > > Did you actually get through with Command + R? > You can do a recovery which basically reinstalls OS X but keeps your files > in tact. > It's kind of like Windows system restore. > > If that fails and ‘NOT having a backup’ … could be a hard lesson learnt! > > Cheers, > Ronni > > Ronni Brown’s iPad Pro 12.9-inch 256GB > > > On 22 Dec 2017, at 4:19 pm, Rosemary Spark <arkaysp...@gmail.com> wrote: > > My husband’s 82 year old has a almost 2 year old iMac, early 2016, running > High Sierra ...don.t know which version at this point. iMac problem
My husband’s 82 year old has a almost 2 year old iMac, early 2016, running High Sierra ...don.t know which version at this point. It decided not to turn on properly the other day. It gets stuck loading with the bar almost complete, but never starts. So far Re-started a number of times...same result. Re-set SMC (according to advice I found just unplugging , leaving and re-starting does that on this computer. Booted to recovery Repair disc...no problems I could see Tried to make disk image but no go ( He has no backup!) Re-loaded software Re-started in safe verbose mode Got stuck on line after line "Process[1xx] crashed: opendirectoryd. Too many corpses being created" At this point I don.t know what else to try. Any suggestions Rosemary Spark -- Kind Regards Rosemary Spark 0414268043 arkaysp...@gmail.com -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml> Guidelines - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Settings & Unsubscribe - <http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug>
