Re: Need help
Kevin, From the depths of Apple's archives: 1. Start with desktop printing disabled (this is important). You can disable desktop printing using the Extensions Manager control panel. 2. Drag all desktop printer icons from the desktop to the Trash. 3. Drag the printing prefs folder (located inside the Preferences folder, which is inside the System folder) to the Trash. Note: If necessary, save your watermark files before deleting the printing prefs folder, or re-install the watermark files after troubleshooting is complete. 4. Drag the PrintMonitor documents folder (in System folder) to the Trash. 5. Add 100 Kilobytes (100K) to minimum and preferred memory sizes of the Desktop PrintMonitor application (in Extensions Disabled folder) by selecting the application and Choosing Get Info from the File menu. 6. Re-enable desktop printing extensions using the Extensions Manager control panel. 7. Restart and rebuild the Desktop file by pressing the Apple and Option keys down until a few seconds after the rebuild is complete. Vlad James -- your email I am looking after a range of Macs at Castlereagh Special School on a voluntary basis. I have a 7200/120 which shows the Epson printer in the chooser and it can be selected and the correct connection chosen, but the machine tells me the printer cannot be found. There is some sort of connection as the printer occasionally coughs out a color print pattern, but no text. I seem to remember something to be turned off in extensions? Anyone able to offer a clue here? TIA Kevin

Re: ISDN failures
Apparently systems using MacOs 3.5+ require that the Open NT1 Plus II modem used for ISDN services receive a firmware update. This can be carried out by a knowledgeable Telstra technician by phone. This has previously been reported to WAMUG by Carol Southern and, more recently, privately to me by others. Anyhow, now that it's all go for me, I've found out that Telstra has been carrying out extensive cabling operations in the hills around Sawyers Valley. The upshot of this is that Broadband may either be available now or imminently. Broadband is what I initially wanted. Wouldn't you know it, I've just commited myself to a year's plan on ISDN. Very frustrating. Vlad James
HiBIS advice
Thanks to Onno and Susan for the feedback. Westnet no longer supply a satellite service. I will look into ISDN more closely, although my first impressions of some months ago were not too crash hot. Even if I chose the satellite, I would retain my Westnet account. Fibre optics in Mt Helena? Anyone know more about that? Vlad
HiBIS advice
Cannot get normal broadband services on the Eastern side of Sawyers Valley, and the prospects in the near future appear bleak. Am about to invest in a 256/64 kbps satellite set-up under the Higher Bandwidth Incentive Scheme. eSat, based in Hobart, is the registered supplier. I would be grateful for pithy comments or advice on the matter. With thanks, Vlad James
Subject: re: Why I love my Mac (reason #845)
Having anything offered by Symantec (eg Norton) anywhere near my Mac is much like allowing a tiger snake indoors in the hope that it might make a good mouser. My cynicism and phobia about this outfit goes back well before 2002. Vlad James snipped I know one thing: if I did own a PC, I wouldn't be letting Nortons anywhere near it. I wouldn't even show it the box. more snipping From an ISP helldesk point of view, anything made by Norton since 2002 is the biggest source of email and browsing issues that I have seen in a long time. e-books flourishing
Apple's iPod has covered music and photos, maybe this could be its next move. excerpt from a New York Times article on e-books -- The market's biggest hurdle right now may be that most people have never even seen an e-book -- at least not one with a price tag. Yet more people are reading more words from screens every day, which some would argue is equivalent to reading a digital book. The popularity of Apple's iTunes Web site for purchasing downloaded music indicates that ''people are getting used to buying digital content without a physical copy,'' notes Theresa Horner, director of e-book operations and business development at HarperCollins. Now consumers just need the equivalent of an iPod for digital books, she says. Read the whole article at: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/05/books/review/05GLAZERL.html?8bu Vlad James
iPod Photo problems
Matt Morgan, I'm considering the purchase of the iPod Photo. Could you elaborate on the clunky aspects of your unit? Compared to what, the regular iPod? The possibility that your unit is struggling with the amount of information seems unlikely. Difficulty with minor format differences in the content seems more likely. Anyhow, that's a worry as well. Re: strange Safari behaviour
Rats! I was too hasty. The problem has returned. Some URLs (eg BankWest and VersionTracker, but NOT the ABC) require a second try. I am not inserting DNS numbers. Vlad James some WAMUG comments --- For the last few days each time I go to a website (from bookmarks, or a link, or typed in manually) it does not connect and I get a message telling me the server cannot be found. But if I try a second time it connects. A wider problem? Of interesting note is that we are beginning to receive reports from some users who have recently had to manually enter DNS server addresses on non-Macs to resolve connectivity issues. This may be indicative of a wider problem -- perhaps increased lag from many ISPs DNS return systems. snip more from WAMUG - My own browsing seems to have bad patches either for a whole session or part. Entering my isp's dns numbers had good and bad effects. It enabled smoother page getting for the most part, but my calls for streaming radio files from the BBC and NPR were delayed consistently. Interestingly, when I used the RealPlayer browser itself, instead of Safari and Camino, the files were served up properly - and then I was able to access them in Safari and Camino consequently.I guess OS X caches them somehow. I have experienced one session where the delay (stutter if you will) was removed by removing my isp's numbers. There appears to be no consistent fault and no consistent fix with my set-up. ---

Subject: Mouses vs trackballs
Another angle on the mouse discussion. All mouses have one thing in common. They require frequent use of the muscles that lift the arm (deltoid, trapezius, etc). Anyone experiencing regular stiffness or aches in the shoulder or neck would be well advised to consider using a trackball. It does not require as much use of the muscles mentioned, as the palm of the hand, and thus, the arm may remain at rest while the fingers do the work. Kensington makes the best trackballs. http://www.kensington.com/ Vlad James
VPC economics
The discussion involving Neil, VPC, Onno and others is most interesting. Here's another view on emulation. I have no need for MS products and don't use them, but I wanted a strategy game (Darklords Rising) which was only available for Win98. It looked like costing me close to $300 for VPC 6.1, so I looked into the cost of a PC with Win98. I found a Pentium 3 with Win98, 256MB RAM, 80GB HD, 48x CD-ROM for the same money. As I already had a spare monitor and wasn't concerned about desk space, I bought the PC. The game is worth the unusual expense. Of course, I do not have the options available with VPC, but I can keep my Mac for real work (writing and graphics), ie free of MS and games. The PC is used only for the one game and general dabbling, which is appropriate for the configuration IMO. Vlad James

Re: Loopy G3
Thanks to those who offered suggestions on the G3 with the looped printer cable. I couldn't help but smile at Onno's suggestion that the looped cable be removed first. Reminded me of an old cookbook that stated: To make a rabbit stew, first catch the rabbit. I guess one shouldn't assume too much when dealing with other people's problems. Anyhow, I had already rebuilt the directory (MacOS 9.2.1), tried various startup procedures (including Extensions Off), run Disk First Aid, zapped the PRAM, booted from a CD and quietly cursed. None of those seemed to do much good. The startup always froze after the first icon appeared. The only variation was to sometimes see the error message system failure ... illegal instruction. I guess it's Number 5 then. :-( Vlad James -- Onno's suggestions I'd start with removing the cable. Then I'd do the following in order: 1. I'd startup with the shift-key down. 2. If that fails, I'd start with a boot-CD. 3. If that fails, I'd zap the pRAM and try #1, then #2, then #4. 4. If that fails, I'd locate the motherboard reset button, press that and try #1, #2, #3, #5. 5. I'd call it a hardware failure and send it to my friendly Apple Store.
Loopy G3
Anyone ever heard of the printer cable on a beige G3/266 connected from the printer port to the modem port? My stepdaughter accidentally did this on her G3, thus forming a diabolical loop. She then started the G3. (Makes you wince, doesn't it?) This has resulted in the startup procedure stopping after one or two extensions are loaded with a blank error window appearing. During my examination I once saw words in the error message, stating system failure, illegal instruction. DiskWarrior and Disk First Aid say all is well. I have thus assumed it is a hardware problem. Looks like it will have to go in for repairs. Anyone have any suggestions ... comments? Vlad James
The Digest format
Blank lines are unsatisfactory separators in the WAMUG Digest format, where individual letters may include many blank lines. Reading through more than two dozen letters so poorly separated is a drag.
