Mail

2019-01-09 Thread Brett Curtis
I’ve just returned to using Mail after a long break.
My question is regarding opening a new sub folder to my business email.
Although I did this successfully a few months ago, I’m now having problems.
I click on the mailbox and choose “New mailbox”
I name the new one and press OK. It appears for a second or so at the bottom
of the mailbox section, then disappears.
If I try again, using the same name, it won’t let me, saying a mailbox of that
name already exists.
I can create a subfolder mailbox to one of the existing 3 sub mailboxes but
cannot move them up in the hierarchy.

 Hi Brett,

I can't help with the first one, but I have come across a similar issue
 regarding certificates.

This is all going by memory:
 Don't click Connect

 Click on Show Certificate instead.
At the top of the certificate it will show a bit of text that may be
interesting to read. In particular look for any drop down box and as long as
it looks legitimate, click -Always Connect.

 See how that goes.

A further option relates to these certificates being stored in Keychain
 Access, which is in Applications:Utilities

In the left pane of Keychain Access is a heading called certificates. I was
going to say have a poke around in there and see if there are any problems.
But using the words 'poke around' is fraught with risk and danger, so great
care needs to be taken to not delete or change anything that could cause you
a problem. Sometimes there might be two certificates, one outdated, one
current. If it were me doing my own poking around, I'd delete the out of date
 one.

Hope this helps, - yes it is a frustrating thing to have to address

Is there any way FMP can be used real time by both computers.
I have tried putting the database in Dropbox. Both computers can access it but

Any suggestions?

also, what about Apple Mail. It seems that sent emails can only be seen on the

I have a plugin installed in Filemaker Pro which will receive mail but not send

I think I must have tried 500 different variations of email addresses and

The settings I have used have all worked with Apple Mail for years.

I have corresponded with 360Works and the guy that installed the plugin and my

Re: Firewire transfer

2013-05-22 Thread Brett Curtis
Susan
You definitely have to have migration assistant open on both machines and when
asked if a code shows on the source computer, you can then press Continue. It
gives the source computer about 10 seconds then comes up with the source
computer is not responding and you then have only one option of cancelling the
migration. You do this and it takes about 2 minutes to respond to that.
Immediately that happens, on the source computer, the code comes up, but its
too late because you have cancelled on the other machine! You can press
continue on the source machine but it has no effect.

Tim
I also heard that Firewire was the way to go.
Anyone have any ideas on the restarting thing? There's no mention of it in any
of the many pages i've read so far.
All the instructions I have read so far carry on with instructions as if there
will be no problems.
Could it be something to do with sharing settings on the new machine?

There is a process to turn the old computer into Target Disk mode, which I
believe is necessary when you are doing this. It's something to do with
restarting it and holding down a certain key on restart.

I also believe you can transfer via your normal network. I just gave Firewire
transfer and Target Disk as another option that I understand is faster.

I did this and it stays in the search mode. It also says If you're
transferring from a Mac in Target Disk Mode This is what Tim mentioned and
on researching that, I've apparently got to restart holding the T So, will be

One other point, Ronni, in your tutorial a later screenshot show what the

 Hi Brett,

As Tim said, migration assistant is the way to go here – and – if both
machines have firewire and can be positioned to allow a firewire
connection then that allows you to use Target mode.

Whilst you CAN move data around manually, migration assistant is a much
better tool to use – particularly if you want to transfer applications,
 account settings etc.

Ronni produced an excellent guide, covering this in detail, a while back:
“How To Transfer Your Data From Your Old Mac To A New Mac”
My copy is from 2010 – so Snow leopard days. I had used migration
assistant several times before, but Ronni’s guide was a good memory jog/
checklist to do it properly ;o)

Check out the archives – this has certainly been covered several times
 before.

how many times do you have to mark a message as junk before Mail actually
realises the emails are spam?
I have been getting mail from an Australian site called logo mates for a year
now!
I mark it as junk, but mail keeps putting them in my inbox, saying Mail thinks
this is spam Golly gee!!! maybe it is???

I have also forwarded it on to reportspam numerous times, but that appears to
have as little impact as marking something as junk to Mail !!! I thought it
was illegal in Oz?

What do I have to do frchrisakes?

Thanks Daniel
I do have the Junk Mail setting set to move to the junk folder for review and
that works most of the time. Just some keep getting through and you can see
the previous emails below, all with a message saying Mail thinks this is Junk
Why does Mail, not put them in the Junk folder?
Re: the training mode. Where do you set this? I have Enable junk mail
filtering ticked.

If Junk Mail is still coming to your InBox, then you may have it set to

If you want it to file them for you then in Mail - Preferences go to Junk

 You'll see choices like
 When junk mail arrives
 • Mark it as junk, but leave it in my Inbox
 • Move it to the Junk mailbox
 • Perform custom actions (Click Advanced to configure).

If you have it set to move to the Junk Mailbox then it will move them away
for you from your InBox, but store them so you can just double check.
 (before deleting them).
Or you can customise it to do other options. (e.g. delete automatically) etc.

Depending on your hosting then you can also set them up with Cpanel from your
hosting side as well, and create auto filters that will filter out a specific
address to not be seen again. And adjust spam filters from the host end as
 well.
(which is what a lot of my hosting clients do).

spam as such in Australia can only be stopped if the company is operating
from an Australian address with an Australia website/address etc. Nothing
they can do about the rest of the world unfortunately.

My spam for the week is you have a message from LinkedIn, click here.
About 10+ a day. And I don't even belong to the stupid thing. Never signed up
for LinkedIn, not interested in. Not interested in the spam. Yet,…I still get
 it. (pretending to be them).

Welcome to the world of the internet. Spam is it's ugly side effect I'm

Have a read up on Target Disk mode to allow direct connection of two

Re: Mail oddities

That works !!! :) Thanks Ronni.

So, they changed Command+V to Command+Option+Shift+V

Like having to open an event in calendar and change the reminder time on the
actual event now instead of just Remind me again in 5, 10 or 15 etc minutes
If it's a recurring event, you must then press only this event on the pop up.

Seems to me that Apple must have people working full time on things that work
well and changing them to a much more convoluted process!

This can also depend on if you're using Rich Text or Plain Text in your

If you always want to have formatting then use all emails as Rich Text (from
Mail Preferences - Composing. Set Message Format to Rick Text if you always
want it. Bearing in mind some email clients may revert it to Plain Text if
 the person is using it).
You can also hold the Option key for certain types of dragging as well.
And thirdly, some times in certain Applications you have to click (or double
click or triple click depending on whether you want to select a word, a
sentence or a paragraph) and then just you sort of pause on the text before
dragging it, i.e. once you've highlighted and before dragging you click and
hold,..then drag. Some applications will read this differently for dragging.

May not help in this instance, but just a few other notes with it as well.

do that if it's the only way to fix the problem.
I have never found calendar to be 100% reliable anyway.

I had hi-lt, in the font of the hi-lit text, now it pastes on the line above in
its original font.

Point 3, I highlight the appointments and copy, place the cursor at the
appropriate position in the email and paste. The order varies each time no
matter what order I select them in calendar. (This is why I wanted to just
move text around in point 1)
I like my 9:00am appt to appear before the 10am one, lol. It just annoying.

Point 4. I have a default signature which appears on every new email. 3 times
a day, I send these emails to employees, all of which have a signature that I
have made for each. So, I open new message, the default sig appears, I go to
signature drop down and select the appropriate signature, press that, and it
appears, below my default signature.

This did not used to happen
Moving text did move it.
Pasting over existing text did place it there in the format of the replaced
text and it did place it there, not on the line above or below.
Changing signatures did replace the default signature, not add to it!
Obviously my mail program is somehow corrupted to some degree. Is there any
way I can repair it or replace it?
I would have thought upgrading to ML would have fixed it, but it seems to have
made it worse if anything.
I have also run disk utilities repair.

Also in ML, if changing signatures, it merely adds new signature to the
bottom of the default signature?? Does this happen to others?
Brett, I'm not sure what you mean here...
Do you mean you have already created an email and added your Default
signature (for that email account) which then shows at the bottom of the
message (if you have not changed the default setting in Mail Preferences
Signatures - and selected Place signature above quoted text?

You select a default signature for each of your email Accounts.
 Mail Preferences Signatures
 In the Left Column:
All Signatures: - holds every signature you have created
Then for each email account: You Assign each new signature to one account, or
 to multiple accounts.
To do so, drag a signature’s name from the middle column onto an account name
 at the left.

You can then choose a default signature for each of these accounts - Choose
 Signature: x?

The Default Signature will show in that Mail Account's new message beside
 'Signature': WAMUG (or whatever)
If you wish to change it in the message just use the arrows in the signature
box to select another signature, which will then 'replace' the default (the
one you originally had in the message) with the signature you just selected.

Is this not happening in your Apple Mail?

I knew I would be upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion, but the problem

How have you setup iCloud on your Mac and on all your Devices to sync using

On your Mac in System Preferences iCloud you should have selected the same
items as in iCloud settings on your iPad.

To keep Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Notes in Sync with your Mac iOS
devices in iCloud; if you sync an iOS device both with iTunes and with
iCloud, you’ll encounter sync loops that lead to endless duplication of
 data—especially calendar and contact items.

So, it’s not enough simply to turn iCloud syncing ON; you must also turn
iTunes syncing OFF for these types of data, if it isn’t off already! To do
 this, follow these steps:
  1. Connect your iOS device to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Select your device in the sidebar on the left.
  4. In the main part of the iTunes window, click Info.
  5. If any of the following items are checked, uncheck them: Sync
Address Book Contacts, Sync iCal Calendars, Sync Safari Bookmarks, and Sync
 Notes.
  6. Click Apply.
The selected data types stop syncing via iTunes and instead will sync via
 iCloud only.

iCloud treats the version of your data that’s in the cloud as authoritative.
So if you have everything setup correctly in iCloud and the correct Data is

actually was when it came to dealing with people but I have also learned that
none of the things I love about Apple products are an accident. Steve Jobs
obsessed about every little detail of hardware finish and every button and
function of the software. He worked tirelessly to simplify complex task and
to design beautiful products in the vein of the great German and Italian
designers. He would spend every Wednesday afternoon with Jony Ive in the
secret design lab discussing the latest product mock-ups. Before the first
Apple Store open he and Ron Johnson for six or so months spent half a day a
week in a full size mock up of the store discussing the customer experience
and subtle design questions. Apple is really a unique company in many

 Hi Gary,

Yes that is the book in question. It is the only authorized biography of
Steve Jobs. I am most of the way through it now (on my iPad) and I am
finding it quite fascinating. I have learned how psychologically damaged
Jobs actually was when it came to dealing with people but I have also
learned that none of the things I love about Apple products are an
accident. Steve Jobs obsessed about every little detail of hardware finish
and every button and function of the software. He worked tirelessly to
simplify complex task and to design beautiful products in the vein of the
great German and Italian designers. He would spend every Wednesday
afternoon with Jony Ive in the secret design lab discussing the latest
product mock-ups. Before the first Apple Store open he and Ron Johnson for
six or so months spent half a day a week in a full size mock up of the
store discussing the customer experience and subtle design questions. Apple
is really a unique company in many respects.

Re: Recurring emails

2011-10-26 Thread Brett Curtis
Thanks Daniel Geoff
Prolly would go for the donotre...@masterwindowcleaners.com type thing but not
if I can't find some way of automating it. (and I would be checking it) There
is a script out there for post-dating emails but not on a regular basis :( It
sends a draft which then disappears.

I truly find it hard to believe that no-one has ever needed this before! In
the case of a service business like mine that is trying to move with technology
and give customer service to their regular clients...
Reminders are essential for some, not all, forgetful clients. You soon get to
know which is which.

Maybe this is destined for the Too hard basket.

When you see a do not reply on an email message it is normally because the
message is generated by a script which uses the server's mail program,
rather than a person using a mail program on their computer. There is no way
that a recipient can be prevented from replying to such a message (or any
message), but the reply goes to an address which just ignores it. You could
mimic this behaviour by setting up an account for reminders with a return
address which (using a rule in your mail program) sends any replies straight
 to the trash.

As to the first part of your question, we would write a system to do this
from scratch, but I am not sure if you could find anything off the shelf.
I do not think it is something that a mail program could be set to do, but I
might be wrong about that. Depending on what support your web hosting
service provides, it might be possible to set up a cron job to do it, but
this requires some Unix skills and could get complex.

One thing I'd be a bit weary of here, and apologies if this sounds nitpicky
or harsh, it's not meant to.
But I wouldn't create an account and then have a rule sending it straight to
 the trash.
My reasoning behind that would be, that if the email client is receiving it,
then although you're not reading it, the email is being received for the rule
to send it to the trash. So from the clients end, even though it might not be
a no reply account, if they did reply to it saying I don't need it this
week etc thanks...the email account would still read it and throw it out. So
someone could then come back and say...well I did email you and tell you.
What a better option would be (as long as you don't have a catch all email
address being run on your domain), would be to use something like
nore...@masterwindowcleaners.com. As long as this isn't a valid email address
or a valid mailbox (or the account doesn't have a catch all system), then
that address would simply bounce. Therefor it's not received at all. And it's
done server end. Any address that is sent and goes through a server system to
email to be filed by a rule,..in theory still has been received. So the
client at the other end doesn't get notified. Yet a dead email address
would simply bounce back to the client with a bounce message.
(I hope that makes sense. I don't think I made myself very clear,..lol).

I don't know of anything for the reminder off hand though I'm afraid. I know
iCal can sent out reminders, but they're normally done at the time of booking
 in the appointment.
You could possibly do something in Automator, similar to this
 http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/birthday-alarms-automated-email-notifications-and-ical-mac-only/
But re-writing it to use iCal info to send out email reminders to people. But
using an account with a dead email address with a name Do Not Reply.
 May work,... ;o)

 Kind regards
 Daniel

Apps on a desktop

2011-10-19 Thread Brett Curtis
Hi from the neanderthal window cleaner (spellcheck had to tell me how to spell
that...T-H-A-T )

My Bro (Peter) says he uses apps on his desktop?
He's not a neanderthal cos he's got a 16yo granddaughter to show him how to do
it! But he can't tell me how to do it!

What's the go here? Are apps really just applications?
Why, when I download an app from iTunes do they just go into my iPhone or iPad?
Can I put them in my applications folder and use them on a desktop? If so, how?

you use for iTunes. Any credit that you have in iTunes in gift cards will be

I had a quick look a FreeMemory but did not download and run it. It seems

I notice that Broom for the Mac is available at a 50% discount right now. I

2011-10-12 Thread Brett Curtis
I have a Samsung 6210FX. The toner cartridges seem to have less than the
normal one would expect from a Laser.
About a year ago, I started having problems with printing anything with
graphics on it. If I want to print 10 copies, it will print one then shut
down, then start up again and print the next and so on.
I rang their service section and they wanted to update the firmware (last time,
they did from their end) This time they couldn't do it that way and sent me a
USB thumbdrive
which cannot be loaded from a Mac. The tech was stumped. I cannot even do it
through VMware Fusion either. Hence I will probably follow Daniels advice
about buying a Brother.

Do the Laser toners also clog up if occaisionally not used for a

Anyone have any opinions on the environmental effects from the Laser

Cold mouse update

2011-09-05 Thread Brett Curtis
Update -Thanks for the replies. I use my trackpad as it's the easier than plugging in a separate mouse when I'm out presenting. I have't tried a USB mouse though, so I will give that a go. I also got a suggestion on twitter to switch to using an iphone app as my slide clicker instead of the logitech one, so I'm going to investigate that too.On my laptop I'm using OSX 10.5.8. I checked out under Universal Access if I had anything ticked. I don't seem too, although I could find 'Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present'.Thanks,AliciaEmpowering Tomorrow's Leaders TodayT: +61 08 9313 2880M: 0413 565 338P: P.O Box 7273, Karawara 6152 WA Australia@aliciacurtiswww.aliciacurtis.com

Re: Steve Jobs Resigns

2011-08-25 Thread Brett Curtis
Truth be told a lot of us are probably being selfish in wanting to retain Steve
for as long as possible. He was a saviour when he came back, saving Apple from
extinction which is where they were heading. He brought back vision and
excellence to the company we all knew was great. He's not gone completely and

USA version of program

2011-07-08 Thread Brett Curtis
I am looking at buying a full version of Filemaker Pro

Sticks in the craw, tho, when you see the difference in the price offered to
Americans vs Aussie price.
We're talking the developer version, cos I like developing my own database
(hobby wise).

I can't see how the program would be any different. But the price is $300
different! Not to mention that the AU$ is higher than the US$

Can I purchase a USA version or would I be stopped if the application noticed
my address being in Oz?
If so, given that I have a .com address, not .au, can I pretend to be a US
resident?

Maybe a private answer, rather than public one.

re:freezing mouse

2003-05-27 Thread brett curtis

My mouse has started acting weirdly lately too.
First, it started alternating between fast and slow tracking, now it
freezes regularly for between 1 and 45 or so seconds.

any input would be appreciated.
I run a g4/400 on 10.2.6
The mouse is a Microsoft IntelliEye.

I also wonder if it is being affected by programmes running in the
background. or it may be from upgrading to 10.2.6

OS10 Printer settings

2002-11-03 Thread brett curtis
Whenever I print on my Epson 760, the default is colour which I only
print in 10% of the time. Anyone know how I can change this cos the
annoying thing is that when the print monitor comes up, I have to move
the window up as when I choose print settings from the OS10 printer
settings panel, the window extends down below the bottom of the screen
and that is where the print button is. I wouldn't mind doing this
10% of the time but 90% is annoying as it always reverts to colour.

When I paste it to a group of cells, the results in those cells is the

Cable

2002-02-25 Thread C. Brett Curtis
I am on the ellenbrook cable and after numerous messages to iinet, i have
reached exasperation point.

I have been trying to ascertain the download speed i should normally expect.
I currently get between 1 to 12 kps and my lady friend who has adsl gets
between 20 to 50 kps. Now, considering that I have a 256k modem, what
should I receive?

Iinet will only tell me that idsl and cable are different (which i keep
telling them, I know) and will not even give me a ballpark figure.
another point to consider is that i have a 500 meg download limit and my
friend who has adsl has a 3 gig limit, i am wondering if i am getting a new
tv program (shafted) I also do not believe the Ellenbrook cable is
overcrowded atm.

any ideas?

You use the Rules facility. See under the Outlook Express Help section. I
have 26 mailboxes [folders] and a few of those have sub-folders and my Rules

Re: Telstra Online Billing

2001-10-22 Thread C. Brett Curtis
I think that Telstra are using the same PR and programming people as NAB. I
have been trying to use this for some time now. They just don't make it
easy. By the time you receive your digital certificate, you've forgotten
why you applied for it then if you're unfortunate enough to remember, you
go on the dubious track of going through the registration of your computer.
I think they have designed this process to deter as many people as possible
from using this facility.
BTW don't upgrade your browser cos you'll lose everything and then when you
ask their help line why, they'll say didn't you keep your original pin
number to access the digital certificate in a holier than thou fashion.

If all this sounds too hard you're probably right!

full width and their hinternet help can't work out why.

At last The National Australia Bank has launched their trial Internet
banking that is accessible with Mac OS. I am one of the trial crew. NAB says
that Internet banking for Mac users will be generally available in November.

Its pretty good so far - far easier to use than the old site which I
accessed using Windows. It was slow and cumbersome but the pilot site is
much faster and easy to navigate. I have had no problems in the first week
of the trial except it won't work using Opera.

Further updates as they come to hand.

ellenbrook Iinet cable and mp3's

2001-10-02 Thread C. Brett Curtis
Don't know if any others are within the ellenbrook cable network...
but, as iinets limit is 500meg (1/6th of Telstras (reduced) limit of 3 gig)
I've had real problems accessing my volume downloads. Ran up an unexpected
$350 excess download charge over 2 months when I couldn't access my records.
I feel this is really wrong hey? I wouldn't have continued had I realised
the rate of download I was doing.
Under extreme haranguing from me they have reduced this to about $200 but no
light on the future reporting of download (atm it's 4 days old)
Iinet don't seem to want to help at all. last month, I knew I had an
uncertian amount of free download left but Iinet decided to use last few
days of the month to do maintenance :( wherein I couldn't access my usage.
nor could the help desk at Iinet. Should I change to telstra isdn??

Next
anyone know a mp3 download site worth trying?
Napster is absolutely useless now.
Aimster is extremely unreliable thru frequent unexpected quits (usually
when a 13 meg song is 95% downloaded :(
also whenever I start beta version 1002, it pesters me to upgrade to 1009
which i have done twice but it won't start due to some error or other. Now
1002 won't start either as it times out immediately (within 1 second)

feeling the world is against me atm :(
