What Mac for 10.2 Server?

2005-05-17 Thread Rod

Hi All!

I am *almost* in the market for a G4 400 Tower. Does anyone know
what the current market price is for one of these beasties? The Mac
will be running 10.2 Server, with the following services:

Mail
File Sharing (SMB and Mac)
Eventually hosting Webobjects database for local use only
DHCP server
Some sort of Firewall, as there are dastardly PCs on the network :-)

At this stage there will only be 3 users connected to the server,
maybe more in the distant future. Would even a B&W G3 be good enough
for this (with lots of ram)?

It seems the amount of 400s have gone to ground again, so just
wondering what I can get away with (Dad doesn't really want to spend
heaps, and I would rather use a tower than an old iMac with one
ethernet port).

Any other ideas?

Seeya

Rod!

Duh - I thought I had been s careful in doing this when I
installed the drive. Lo and behold the jumper had to be removed from
the factory position for master to take effect (the factory jumper
position is in fact "none of the listed options").

Thanks again, Antony.

Two thoughts here:

1. Is the jumper set on the drive set for single/master? (I've seen

2. Is OSX really installed on the first partition on the disk? (sounds

What have I missed here? I ran the iMac firmware updater 1.2 and it

Suggestions welcomed!

actually my strictly personal, and in no way associated with my place

It seems I must have missed the original post regarding this, but as a
long-tome user of Launch! (since its inception) I can vouch for this
excellent little utility. It has never failed me, is as solid as a

Resolved: Dock stops working in OS 10.2.x

2003-02-17 Thread Anthony Meston
Thanks Shay.

All is looking well again. Doing a search for com.apple.dock listed two
files:
Users_home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
System/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dockfixup.plist

Removing the user's preference file had no effect except for resetting the
size and magnification options - the icons were still unresponsive.

Removing the System file - dockfixup - was the winner. I don't know where
this file came from. It is dated 12/12/02 and was not recreated after
reboot.

Ciao
Anthony

Yes, sounds like it could be. You could try throwing away the
appropriate '.plist' file, probably being com.apple.dock.plist

luck. It is reasonably "vanilla" installation with no third party stuff
running except for Norton AntiVirus and Classic is only used for Outlook.

Sometimes the Dock is not updating the open applications' icons with the

I have searched to the best of my ability through Apple's KB, but didn't

If you can export Eudora addresses as vCards then they will import just
fine into Address Book (which is a Good Thing To Do even if you don't
use Mail, since the 10.2 Address Book is system-wide and used by other
software than just Mail).

Why don't you use Eudora for OS X, which is one of the few programs
that you can set up to use the same "Eudora" folder, so should you
have to boot into OS 8.6 or 9, then you have the same emails across
all your operating systems, rather than having different emails in
Eudora, Mail, etc for OS X, OS 9 amd OS 8.6..

That is the way I do it. One Eudora folder, then I can see all my
email regardless of whether I'm in OS 9 or X. :o)

Security Vulnerability in Mac OS X 10.2

2002-12-20 Thread Martin Hill

Here's another reason to upgrade to 10.2.3

If you are running Mac OS X 10.2 or Mac OS X Server 10.2 and you have
printer sharing turned on, make sure you upgrade to 10.2.3 or this
vulnerability in the CUPS sub-system could allow malicious hackers

http://www.idefense.com/advisory/12.19.02.txt
Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in Common Unix Printing System (CUPS)
December 19, 2002

I. BACKGROUND

Easy Software Products' Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is a
cross-platform printing solution for Unix environments. It is based on the
"Internet Printing Protocol," and provides complete printing services to
most PostScript and raster printers. CUPS has a web-based graphical
interface for printer management and is available on most Linux systems.
More information is available at http://www.cups.org .

The following major vendors are known to distribute CUPS by default; in
some cases, it is the default printing implementation used as well:

Apple Computer Inc.
Debian Project
FreeBSD Project
MandrakeSoft Inc.
NetBSD Foundation
Red Hat Inc.
Slackware Linux Inc.
SuSE Inc.
The SCO Group
Turbolinux Inc.

II. DESCRIPTION

Exploitation of multiple CUPS vulnerabilities allow local and remote
attackers in the worst of the scenarios to gain root privileges. The
following test platforms were used for various parts of this advisory:

[1] - Red Hat Linux 7.0 running CUPS-1.1.14-5 (RPM)
[2] - Red Hat Linux 7.3 running CUPS-1.1.14-15 (RPM)
[3] - Red Hat Linux 7.3 running CUPS-1.1.17 (Source Install)

ISSUE 1 - Multiple Integer Overflows

An integer overflow exists in the CUPSd http interface. Exploitation
allows an attacker to gain the permissions of the 'lp' user id and the
'sys' group id. The offending lines of code can be found in cgi-bin/var.c:

var = form_vars + form_count;
var->name = strdup(name);
var->nvalues = element + 1;
var->avalues = element + 1;
var->values = calloc(element + 1, sizeof(char *));
var->values[element] = strdup(value);

Since an attacker has control over both element and value, he or she can
overwrite the address of a soon-to-be called function with the address of
arbitrary code. The following is a successful run of the vanilla-coke
exploit ran against test platform [1] built against glibc-2.2.4-18.7.0.8:

$ ./vanilla-coke

$ ls -l /tmp/suid
- - - - - -rwsrwsr-x 1 lp sys 14093 Dec 4 07:50 /tmp/suid

$ /tmp/suid
sh-2.04$ id
uid=4(lp) gid=3(sys) groups=500(farmer)

The exploit created a set user id 'lp' shell. While the current exploit
works only against systems utilizing glibc-2.2.4-18.7.0.8, it is possible
to make modifications that will make it effective against earlier glibc
versions. The vulnerable code also exists in the latest version of CUPS
(test platform [3]) and appears to be exploitable with slight
modifications.

Multiple integer overflows also exist in the image handling code of the
filters in CUPS. The following is a successful run of the mksun exploit
tested against platform [1]:

$ ls -al /tmp/resulted
/bin/ls: /tmp/resulted: No such file or directory

$ ./mksun | lp
request id is lp-100 (1 file(s))

$ cat /tmp/resulted
Ok.
uid=4(lp) gid=3(sys)
groups=0(root),1(bin),2(daemon),3(sys),4(adm),6(disk),10(wheel),40(dip)

This vulnerability still exists in the latest version of CUPS (test
platform [3]) slight modification of the exploit code is required.

 ISSUE 2 - /etc/cups/certs/ Race Condition

A race condition exists in the creation of /etc/cups/certs/. This
allows a local attacker to create or overwrite any file as root. A
prerequisite to launching this attack is 'lp' user privileges, which can

You might be able to do it if you installed 9 and X on a separate

to get it to work on the same partitioned drive though.

I am not particularly interested in going to OS 9 as I have to then

can I install OS 10.2 and use it , whilst also maintaining use of OS
8.6 (albiet as a separate boot I suppose, not in classic)

I am not particularly interested in going to OS 9 as I have to then
update my printer driver($150) for no bloody benefit unless somebody
has powerprint USB 5.0 for less than $50.

Re: Loading Classic with 10.2

2002-11-19 Thread Shay Telfer

At boot up a MacOS 9.2 window appears with a smiling face momentarily
in the centre. The extensions icons then appear as loading at the
bottom of the window. When they are finished the 'twiddled' page is
blank but has a 'header' with the heading "Classic Environment
starting from "/Macintosh HD/System Folder", the pulsing (twirling?)
progress bar at the top left, an option to hide Mac OS9 desktop
window. The progress bar rapidly progresses until the last cm where
it seems to hang.

Try rebooting from OS X into Mac OS 9 directly. Sometimes this seems
to allow OS 9 to fix things up a bit.

Is it possible to create a document with AppleWorks 6 in 10.2 and
then transfer it to the Classic environment for printing?

Given that you can now print to ImageWriters from Mac OS X with a bit
of fiddling, I'd expect you can now print to LaserWriter Select 300's
too! You might need to fool around (or find someone to help) with the
CUPS drivers:

What's the 'Classic' window displaying? Happy Mac? Icons? A dialog?
You'll need to have the triangle in the classic startup window
'twiddled' to show what Classic's doing as it boots.

Re: Palm 4/Mac 10.2

2002-11-12 Thread Shay Telfer

Since I loaded Mac 10.2 onto my new imac, and the Palm 4 upgrade I have had
trouble synching my husband's Palm. Someone suggested Isync, but that did
not work (would not update, and lost a lot of data).

Two things happen
1) the desktop software won't open the user files. When you shift from none
to the user name, the boxes of info appear then disappear. If I point to
open in the file menu the same thing happens. I can force it to open by
opening the archive files, but it doesn't hold.

You might need to try moving the user's data out of the way and
downloading a fresh copy. To do this, move the folder

/Users/username/Palm/Users

somewhere else, and then re-run Palm desktop. It should download
everything from your Palm onto the Mac. If that doesn't work you can
always move the folder you just moved back.

You can also try quitting Palm Desktop and deleting the file

/Users/username/Library/Preferences

(Where of course, 'username' is the appropriate username in the above examples)

Good luck,

Same thing with me... Most of your problems I have had in the past and
unfortunately cannot remember the exact cure but I know it involved
making copies and deleting old files and re-entering preferences...
Can't be much help in this area I'm afraid.

One thing I have noticed is that I cannot backup using G4 Now using
10.2.2 The only thing that works is shutting down the computer
giving it a minute and re-starting it. Restarting alone does not cure
the problem for some reason. Once it has restarted I can run my Palm
backup no problem. I think that it is either Internet Connect or Print
Centre that causes the problem once it is run.

Good luck, I will be watching your responses with interest...

What is peculiar is that the synching has worked a couple of times, but now

As we shifted from PCs after 12 years so that my husband would find using a

Apache Web Server PHP for 10.2

2002-09-30 Thread Scott Palmer
One note.

When enabling PHP for the Apache Web Server in OS 10.2
the httpd.conf file will not contain the following (as outlined in the
tutorial)

# For example, the PHP 3.x module will typically use:
#
# AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3
# AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps
#
# And for PHP 4.x, use:
#
# AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
# AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

Instead you can add the following:

'AddType application/x-httpd-php .php'

after

'AddType application/x-tar .tgz'

In the "httpd.conf" file.

Handy MacOS X 10.2 trick

2002-09-27 Thread hinchlif
Fresh from the latest issue of Apple eNews:

With MacOS X v10.2, you now have yet another option for capturing
screen shots. Apart from cmd-Shift-3 (captures entire screen) and
cmd-Shift-4 (select an area) you now have this feature:

Immediately hit the spacebar after typing cmd-Shift-4. Instead of
crosshairs, you'll see a little camera. Move the camera around to
highlight the Dock, the menu bar, the desktop, or any open window. Then
just click the mouse button to "snap" a screen shot. In fact, with this
option, you can entirely eliminate the desktop when you capture a
screen shot of an individual window.

Eventually the Address Book will be the central repository of address
information on your Mac that all applications will link to (like your
e-mail application, iChat, your calendar, etc. So at some stage it'd
be good to have all your addresses in there (especially when iSync
arrives). But you don't have to do anything until then (well, unless
you're using Bluetooth to talk to your mobile phone, in which case
Address book adds functionality now).

Mail.app I still probably wouldn't worry about for a bit.

Rod
Entourage 2001 will export contacts as .vcf which can be imported into
Mail. However your distribution lists won't come in, you need to
recreate them. The best way I found of doing that is to drag the
original contact from the group to a desktop folder (the alias in the
list won't work). Then you create your group in Address Book and
import the desktop folder contents to it. The only blob is that you
will have duplicate entries in the All group.

Re: 10.2 Address Book/Mail

2002-09-08 Thread Daniel Forsdyke
The main problem at the moment is that my email programs download multiple
copies of each message. I think it is probably related to the ISP - e-wire.
I have three email acounts with them and I believe the problem stems from
the fact that all three accounts utilise the same login and password -
strange but true!!

Any thoughts or possible solutions greatfully accepted!!

I was planning on talking to the ISP to see if the accounts can have their
login's changed?

OS-10.2 Mail

2002-09-08 Thread Goodall-Smith - Psychological Health Care
Hi again,

I have hunted high and low but cannot find a way to change the printed
font preference in Mail... At the moment it it printing in what looks
like about 8pt

I can view in different fonts and sizes and can compose mail in
different fonts, sizes and colours etc but cannot find a way to adjust
the font when I want to print a mail document...

I am sure I am overlooking the obvious and the mail help function
doesn't help with this so any suggestions would be welcomed...

Thanks,

Phil

FTP Problems in Dreamweaver with 10.2

2002-09-08 Thread Scott Palmer
Hi all,

If anyone experiences strange problems with Dreamweaver MX in OS10.2.

Eg: Constantly ³waiting for server², ³Cannot establish connection²,
³connection timed out², etc. etc.

When they shouldn¹t be appearing. Try setting the FTP timeout to 30sec.
There seems to be a strange glitch that makes dream weaver crash constantly
and display strange alerts if its set to 60sec in 10.2

scott

On my system the "Login" pane is in the Personal section, and "Login
Items" is in Other. Obviously, this is a stuff-up. I think it''s time

Fwd: 10.2 Address Book/Mail

2002-09-08 Thread Stephen Atherton

Hi Rod,

Changed to "Mail" recently from "Entourage" after a decade on "Eudora".
Change, they tell me, is good for the soul.

I like it. Especially Junk filter which is better than Entourages. I do
empathise (I can't say "agree" as an Apple employee) with the issues
raised regarding U.S.-centric behaviour (dates, spelling).

To import contacts from Entourage, just drag the contacts into a folder
on the desktop. They'll be .vcf files which can then just be dragged
into the Address Book.

Cheers

I loaded MacOS 10.2 yesterday with nary a hitch, and fired up Mail last
night. It handled all my mail easily, with the exception of an IMAP
account I keep track of. Mail kept complaining that it was not

Re: OS 10.2 & HP drivers

2002-09-06 Thread Shay Telfer

I contacted HP because the HP set up assistant kept stalling when I tried to
install the latest available driver for an OfficeJet G85.

It appears that as of 23rd of August HP have posted some new drivers
for Jaguar users. Although they don't list the G85, it might be worth
a try (it does list improved speed as one fix) using the Deskjet
drivers.

Thanks to Richard Jenkins for the tipoff.

10.2 DVD Player and burnt DVDs

2002-09-06 Thread Rod

Hi All!

Just wondering if anyone has had problems playing burnt DVD disks in 10.2.
I have tried disks burnt with iDVD as well as disks with a Panasonic
standalone burner. The disks have been the Apple branded variety.

I have searched the usual avenues (WAMUG archives, Kbase, Macintouch...) but
there is no mention of this problem.

Any thoughts before I escalate?

OS 10.2 & HP drivers

2002-09-05 Thread Michael Hawkins
I contacted HP because the HP set up assistant kept stalling when I tried to
install the latest available driver for an OfficeJet G85.

The response was prompt (which is good) but the news was bad (which is not
so good). To quote:

"Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Product Support Technical
Center.

OfficeJet printers currently do not function with Macintosh OS 10.2.
Hewlett-Packard is aware of this issue and is working to provide a solution.
We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause, and presently we
recommend continuing to use OS 10.1 until a solution to the issue is found.

Please visit our web page at http://www.hp.com periodically and click on
Drivers to check for driver updates. You can also sign up for Driver Update
Notification from the same page. The Driver Update Notification system will
notify you by email whenever new drivers for your product are released. We
apologize, but currently there is no ETA for OS 10.2 driver availability.

Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Product Support
Technical Center."

To look on the bright side, it may yet be that after having had the
OfficeJet for 20 months I'll be able to use it at some where near what the
advertisements said it would do when I paid in excess of $1400 to buy it.

In future I will take my PowerBook with me and ask to see the device working
before I pay.

Michael Hawkins.

Replacement Clock for 10.2

2002-09-04 Thread Goodall-Smith - Psychological Health Care
Hi,

Just found a great little program to replace the clock in OS-10.2...

I found it in Version Tracker... It's only 85k in size and the download
page is :

http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=7766&db=macosx

It gives all the features that you could want in a clock as well as
providing a cool pop down calendar as well... The many options all
work great and it's FREE and it looks great! Giving the option top
change fonts, size and colour as well...

I get excited easily...

Works fine for me via a Keyspan USB adapter (or IR). I did have to go
and re-select the port in the HotSync manager though.

not connect and to check my settings which I have and they appear to be

I have checked for any updates to Palm software wince OS-10.2 but there

I am not keen on scrapping things and starting again as when I have

Adding more printer drivers to CUPS under OS X 10.2

2002-08-28 Thread Martin Hill
Has anyone played around with CUPS under Jagwire yet? Specifically,
has anyone tried installing more printer drivers for CUPS under OS X?

I'm trying to get our Macs to print to our Lanier 5645 multifunction
business-class network printer. If we had the postscript module
installed it'd be a no-brainer, but unfortunately the powers that be
decided to save money and the base model only supports PCL.

The posting below from http://www.linuxprinting.org shows the success
one guy has had getting it working under Debian linux. I am going to
experiment along similar lines, but thought I'd see if anyone else
had any OS X specific CUPS experiences first before delving into the
underbelly... :)

-Mart

---

http://www.linuxprinting.org/pipermail/general-list/2002q2/001812.html
Could you guys please create a forum and printer listing in the database
for the OEM 'Lanier' and the model 'Lanier 5645'. Lanier is a USA
branding of Ricoh.

I have successfully printed to a Lanier 5645 over the network from a
Debian linux box via cups. Here's what I did:

Step 1: Purge the evil spirits of missing-dependencies from your box by
installing Debian 'testing'. Then...

apt-get install cupsys cupsys-bsd cupsomatic-ppd xpp
(cupsys-bsd is optional)

killall -HUP cupsd
(...to make sure it picks up all the cupsomatic models you just pulled in)

apt-get install qtcups
(if you like a qt app)

Now use the cups web interface. i.e. http://localhost:631
- you will need to authenticate as root.
- create a printer.
- under 'Device', make it a "lpd/lpr host or printer".
- enter a URI of "lpd:///lp".
- select Model of "Ricoh".
- select Model of "Aficio 220, foomatic + pxlmono (en)".
You should see success, now either:
- print a test page from cups.
- fire up xpp and print something from there.

You should be golden.

BTW there is a good chance this will work with the Lanier 2145 (a similar
printer), and probably a bunch of others.

Caveats: My margins aren't completely sorted yet. And there is maybe a
better driver to choose,
but I didn't see it yet. I tried 'raw' drivers before this, but got
postscript garbage spewing forth. Graphics-intensive stuff takes a while
to send. I'm not saying this is the canonical way to do it, but it got me
on the air.

Bonus: You can browse files in konqueror, and print them by selecting
'print', selecting a print system of 'external', and entering a print
command of 'qtcups'. If konqueror can view it, it will print WYSIWYG.

Double-bonus: Print from Mozilla...select 'print' and then select
'properties' in the print dialog. There is a long sting of gobbledygook
beginning with 'lpr...'. Just replace the word 'lpr' with 'qtcups'.
Voila.

The Lanier 5645 is a multifunction business-class network printer, B&W
hi-res (prints 600dpi from free software).

Re: OS X 10.2 installation problem on Beige G3 (Rev B) 300

2002-08-28 Thread Shay Telfer

[resending with a date sometime in this millennium]

Hi Martin

Thank you for your help.

My problem is as follows: When the installation program on the CD
gets to the part where I am asked to choose the partition on which to
install OS X 10.2, both of my partitions have red exclamation marks
next to them. If I try to select the first (8GB) partition, it says
that "You cannont install OS X on this partition because it is not
within the first 8GB of the disk". The first partition is exactly
8GB (8 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes), and it worked flawlessly with the
installation of OS X 10.1.

My computer is:
PowerPC G3 300 (Rev B)
40 GB HD - 1st partition: 8.0 GB; 2nd partition 26.x GB

Are you sure they're in that order on the disk? It's possible the new
installer is testing for 'marketing' Gigabytes (ie 8 * 1000 * 1000 *
1000 bytes)

I'd suggest using Disk Utility and attempting to reformat. Make the
first partition 7Gb or something just to be sure :)

Thanks,
Shay

2002-08-28 Thread Shay Telfer

Thanks,
Shay

Good to hear Gordon :-) ... I've done an archive install on my G4 466 - only
issue was the MS intellimouse control panel which was fixed with a quick
software reinstall.

May be just in my head, but the archive install method feels like it resulted
in a
more responsive finder than my earlier 'upgrade existing' choice.

Oh, the much reported lack of functionality with third party SCSI cards seems
to be true ... I've got no access to my Adaptec SCSI & Ricoh CDR combo. No
big deal, it'll get fixed ...

Cheers,

There's also info from thinksecret.com; they reckon the new powermacs will

Check out the latest article here:

http://www.macosrumors.com/

Here's a part of it -

"On the oldest supported or unsupported Macs, Jaguar will deliver all of
its slick new applications, features, and interface elements with a
modest speed boost (as long as you have at least 128MB of RAM). On newer
systems, however, the change is much more dramatic.

Multiprocessor G4s really shine with 10.2 in a way not previously seen.
Multiprocessing has already become a wonderful thing under OS X, but
10.2 is significantly more multi-threaded (an application design vital
to spreading application resources evenly across MP systems) throughout,
and it shows. Those with at least 2X AGP graphics accelerators and 16MB
of graphics RAM -- supporting the new Quartz Extreme drawing
technology -- will see the biggest benefits, however. QE is just
stunning.

If you have OS X, open up CPU monitor and System Preferences. Watch the
reading on CPU Monitor as you drag the System Preferences window
vigorously around the screen. Spiked like crazy, right - even if you're
on the latest and greatest hardware? Under 10.2, any 667MHz+ or MP G4
system with a decent 32MB accelerator will see a less than 10% CPU
spike...on many systems, less than 5%. Keep in mind also, that System
Preferences has more items and more eye candy in its window under 10.2!"

Read the article for a few more impressions of Jaguar.

It all depends on what sort of computer you will be running it on. For
example, if you have a dual processor G4 with an Nvidia GeForce or AIT
Radeon graphics card, you will see a considerable speed up in most
operations.

If you have a single processor G3 with a RAGE 128 graphics card, then you
will only see a fraction of the speed increases Jaguar provides.

It's called Jaguar (or Jagwire or Shagwire if you prefer :), so of
course it'll be faster!

Fortunately they've multithreaded more things in the Finder, so its
responsiveness will be better, even if it's not faster (eventually we
may even get back to the usability we had in Mac OS 8!). I imagine
they've bothered to profile and optimise other things, as well as
using the graphics hardware (rather than the CPU) to do more of the
window drawing thanks to Quartz Extreme.

So, in general the forecast is faster, but I'll believe it when I see it...

Re: Upgrading to OS 10.2

2002-08-09 Thread Michael Hawkins
I'm oddly relieved to see that I'm not the only disgruntled Apple user. Here
is the gist of feedback that I sent to Apple:

"I have noticed the howls of protest that Apple is going to charge for
iTools, but as far as I am concerned whether or not iTools is free is not
the question. The real question is whether Apple should get away with
seeking to charge a hefty price for the addition of features and a series of
bug fixes in OS X. What were versions OS X to OS 10.1.5 - beta software?

I use my PowerBook for business purposes. Yes, the screen on my lap top
looks very swish but looks aren't what really matter. What really matters is
whether the computer does what it is meant to do, efficiently and
effectively. In my case, print. I have a HP OfficeJet G85 multifunction
printer. My PowerBook has 640 meg ram. It prints in black & white at a
whopping 1 minute per page, but that is the speed of light compared with the
printing rate that a colleague enjoys in OS X. He has an iBook and Epson
5900GL. He bought them in January this year from a dealer who assured him
that a driver would be available in January. It still isn't. His computer
does not print at all in OS X. In order to print it must be shut down then
rebooted in Classic. The USB connected Epson, like my G85, does not
recognise the computer if it is merely restarted: the computer must be
rebooted.

How productive is that.

We and many thousands of Apple users have wasted hours and hours because of
things that Apple now recognises must be fixed, yet Apple wants us to pay.
Apple should forget about bells and whistles. It should focus on getting its
software to work, and it should reward the loyalty of users who stuck by
Apple rather than hit them yet again in the hip pocket. And when it does
that, results will follow and people will switch. But at the moment I for
one can not in all conscience encourage any one who needs to be productive
to buy Apple."

Regards

Michael Hawkins.

I have even built myself a PC to supplement my Mac...something I
thought I would never do!

This I'm a little ashamed of, since I have supported Apple since the mid 80s.

Cheers

Phil

Just a little whinge about the new (& improved!) OS X 10.2. Below is some
feedback I have sent through to Apple on the OS X 10.2 upgrade.

'I just wanted to voice my opinion that after having spent $6,000 (AUS) on a
new PowerBook G4 with new OS X only back in late March 2002 to now have to
pay the full cost ($229 AUS) for OS X 10.2 in less than six months after
making the upgrade/change to OS X really sucks.

I have constantly pushed the Apple barrow as paying for quality up front
meant that you are not constantly having to pay full price for every
upgrade, unlike the Windows environment. But now it would appear that not
only do you pay more up front for quality but I must now constantly upgrade
the software (which will mean every other program on my computer will need
to be upgraded as well.

I am well aware this is the way the Windows/Microsoft people work but I
thought Apple was different!'

And by the way what is with all the numbers I thought OS X meant just that,
not OS X then 10.1 or 10.2 after it seems like a lot of doubling up on the
number ten.

There that's off my chest, just seems to me that there should be some form
of grading the upgrade cost especially as OS X 10.1 is so ripe off the vine.

I would hope that others with like feelings would express them to Apple and
try to get them to 'think different' - what a corny/catchy phrase!

10.2 via AppleStore

2002-08-08 Thread Matthew Healey
Hi all,

I have just confirmed with Apple that if you order 10.2 from the AppleStore
web site (or phone number), you will not get your copy until about a week
later.

I would suggest that if you absolutely can't wait to get 10.2, go you your
nearest AppleCentre on the Saturday.

AppleCentre Joondalup - 9301 5333
AppleCentre Mt Hawthorne - 9444 9988
Desktop Applications - 9322 6789

Regards

Matthew Healey
