RIP indeed.

Watched the Netflix doco “The Social Dilemma” the other night…Steve pops up for
a few seconds waving an iPhone which was the start of it all.
All the rest of the California heavies were pilloried - Steve’s name was never
mentioned again.

Worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

Cheers

Apple History - starring Steve Jobs

2012-05-03 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi People,

Nine Minutes of history...

Watch Steve Jobs play FDR in Apple's long-lost takeoff on famous '1984'
Macintosh TV commercial
Nine-minute film called '1944' was produced to inspire Apple sales team to take
on IBM

<http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/80448>

If all you want to see is Steve Jobs playfully portraying Franklin Delano
Roosevelt - right down to the cigarette holder - here's that short clip before
we get to the longer version of the film that it's taken from and an
explanation:

Entitled "1944," the almost 9-minute full version was Apple's in-house takeoff
on "1984," the iconicfirst Macintosh TV ad that caused a sensation during that
year's Super Bowl. Set as a World War II tale of good vs. IBM, it is a
broadcast-quality production (said to have cost $50,000) that was designed to
fire up Apple's international sales force at a 1984 meeting in Hawaii. A copy
of "1944" was provided to me by one-time Apple employee Craig Elliott, now CEO
of Pertino Networks, a cloud-computing startup located two blocks from Apple in
Cupertino.

Elliott, who worked at Apple from 1985 to 1996, says he has "never seen (the
film) anywhere else" and that there has been "no additional circulation" as far
as he knows. I couldn't find it online, either - the year 1984 was pre-World
Wide Web, of course -- which doesn't mean it isn't out there. Two snippets from
"1944," without any dialogue, do appear in another Jobs video - a photo-montage
tribute to him made by Apple employees to mark his 30th birthday. After Jobs
died last October, Elliott posted that birthday video to his Facebook page,
from where it went viral before being knocked off the 'Net by Sony Music
Entertainment because it used a Bob Dylan song.

Cheers,
Ronni

2011-11-24 Thread cm
Yes. Truly well deserved.

Steve Jobs is also on the short list for Time Magazine's person of the year.
The panel is of two minds because Jobs is no longer alive. The panelist most
opposed to honouring Jobs is actor Jesse Eisenberg who played Mark Zuckerberg
in the film "The Social Network". There is a good deal of irony in this as Mark
Zuckerberg beat out Steve Jobs for the title last year. :-)

U.S. Patent Office Honors Steve Jobs with iPhone-Shaped Exhibit

2011-11-24 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi WAMUGers,

Another well deserved honour to Steve Jobs.

<http://mashable.com/2011/11/23/steve-jobs-patents/>

U.S. Patent Office Honors Steve Jobs with iPhone-Shaped Exhibit:

"The late Steve Jobs has been hailed as a brilliant businessman, marketer, and
visionary. He was also an prolific inventor, if the number of patents bearing
his name are any indication.

No less than 323 Apple patents list Jobs among the inventors responsible for
them. Now the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is honoring the Apple
founder with a dedicated exhibit.”

Re: "Steve Jobs" the authorized biography

2011-10-31 Thread cm
Hi Peter,

I think you will enjoy reading the Isaacson book. It is not like anything
previously written about the notoriously secretive Jobs. Jobs chose and asked
Isaacson to write his biography but Isaacson initially refused, saying perhaps
in 20 or 30 years' time. After some time, in 2009, Jobs' wife Pauling said to
Isaacson "If you're going to do Steve, you really ought to do it now."

The book draws on 40 interviews conducted with Jobs over two years during which
Jobs' gave Isaacson what he called unprecedented access to private details of
his life. Isaacson also interviewed all the major players -- Jobs' colleagues,
friends, and his enemies -- even Bill Gates of all people :-). He was for
instance shown Jony Ive's secret design lab at Apple which is off limits to all
but a few. Isaacson complained that the toughest part was "how to navigate when
four different people told me the same anecdote in four different versions and
none would be intentionally lying".

As a journalist of Time magazine, and the author of two other major biographies
on Einstein and Benjamin Franking, Isaacson does an admirable job confirming
stories, finding the right time to bring in material from different sources,
and yet at the same time making the book enourmously readable.

My one concern when reading the book was that it is a recipe for other
companies to imitate Apple's unique design and manufacturing process -- but
that may be just one more part of Jobs' legacy to the tech world.

Cheers,
Carlo

Hi Peter,

There are numerous ‘Unauthorized Biographies’ and books, writings of Steve
Jobs. My reply above was referring to "Steve Jobs” The Exclusive Biography by
Walter Isaacson’ that it is and will be the ONLY biography authorised by Steve
Jobs and with his blessing.

As a pure biography this might be true, but I have just finished reading
"Inside Steve's Brain" by Leander Kahney (Atlantic Books), which, while perhaps
not really qualifying as a proper biography, it comes pretty close. It's a
little old now, being written in 2007, but from the excerpts I have have read
from the authorised biography, there is what seems to be a 100% correlation in
describing Job's philosophies and work practices. I'm looking forward to
reading the Isaacson version.

Re: "Steve Jobs" the authorized biography

2011-10-31 Thread cm
Hi Brett,

Here is an AppleInsider article claiming to give the reason that Jobs agreed to
the biography:

Steve Jobs agreed to biography so his children could know him better

A quote from that article reads

"I wasn't always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to
understand what I did," Jobs said of his children to Isaacson.

And from another article:

Jobs, reports Isaacson, maintained that he had “no skeletons in his closet that
can’t be allowed out”. He didn’t ask to read the book, though he cavilled about
the cover design, and he encouraged his biographer not only to continue
grilling him on his deathbed, but to speak as extensively as possible to
friends and enemies.

Having come to appreciate Jobs' personality a bit more, it must have been a
hard choice for him to cede all control of the book to Isaacson, not even
asking to read the book before it was published!

I read elsewhere, but have no link, that he asked his wife Pauline to read the
book for him and give him her opinion of it. And again with no source and
unconfirmed I recall reading that he was upset with some of the portrayals of
him in the book. Finally, and again not having recorded the link, I read that
Jobs said he would read the book six months after it was published. That's one
plan that, alas, he will not carry out.

If you won't a countervailing opinion that portrays Jobs in the most positive
light imaginable, you can read the eulogy that Mona Simpson, Job's full sister
and an author, delivered at his funeral. The article includes, what Simpson
claims to be Jobs' last words -- "Oh wow! Oh wow! Oh wow!"

Steve Jobs' sister shares his final moments, last words

Cheers,
Carlo

Re: "Steve Jobs" the authorized biography

2011-10-30 Thread cm
Hi Gary,

Yes that is the book in question. It is the only authorized biography of Steve
Jobs. I am most of the way through it now (on my iPad) and I am finding it
quite fascinating. I have learned how psychologically damaged Jobs actually was
when it came to dealing with people but I have also learned that none of the
things I love about Apple products are an accident. Steve Jobs obsessed about
every little detail of hardware finish and every button and function of the
software. He worked tirelessly to simplify complex task and to design beautiful
products in the vein of the great German and Italian designers. He would spend
every Wednesday afternoon with Jony Ive in the secret design lab discussing the
latest product mock-ups. Before the first Apple Store open he and Ron Johnson
for six or so months spent half a day a week in a full size mock up of the
store discussing the customer experience and subtle design questions. Apple is
really a unique company in many respects.

Cheers,
Carlo

Re: Steve Jobs

2011-10-06 Thread Daniel Kerr
Today is a very sad day indeed
The world has certainly lost a very great man.

Even though I never met him, it's a very big shock, and I must admit it being a
fairly 'heavy' day, and I'm lost for words

You almost want to have a sleep and wake up to the "the stories of my passing
were incorrect". Unfortunately, not this time,...
I always remember sitting up to watch his keynotes (when they were
streamed),..and they were always impressive.
He certainly did have an RDF (Reality Distortion Field).

My condolences to his family and friends and those he has left behind. May
Apple continue to strive on his 'greatness' he has left all of us

A nice little tribute

/quote
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round
pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond
of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them,
disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do
is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the
people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones
who do. - Apple Inc
/end quote

(I always really liked the above,..and the Video clip for it too)

Rest in Peace Steve

Kind regards

Good evening dear WAMUGers,

My sincere condolences to all who have been touched by Steve JOBS and
appreciate the great work he has achieved and what he has done for the
Apple world. I have followed him via his career at Apple and have
always had a great admiration for him.

To our dear Ronni, thank you for sharing this very private insight
into your life and the inspiration Steve Jobs gave you to find your
path in life.  I am very sad too like so many  but I will keep such a
wonderful memory of this great man. Yes, he certainly has touched
many, many people.

May he be at peace now that his suffering is over.

Kind regards,

Thanks Ronni. Yours is an inspiring story.

The ABC news website today ran a comment page which attracted a large
volume of responses from many devoted fans. One that caught my eye (for
people who know of Harry PotterŠ)

He's not dead. He has a horcrux in every iPhone. Live long Steve. Live

Apart from your occasional very helpful advice on this list, I don't know you

However, you are a champion, and thank you for sharing your story with us. I
wish you well.

I can't believe how personal it feels, hearing of Steve Jobs's death...

Re: Steve Jobs

2011-10-05 Thread Ronda Brown

A very sad day. Steve Jobs will be remembered as a truly great man for many
reasons.

He was particularly inspirational and gave me the motivation I needed when I
viewed and listened to his 'Stanford University’s 114th Commencement on June
12, 2005’ speech.

It was my Birthday; and I had returned home from Hospital after another
operation for my battle with cancer, which had recurred after years of
remission, and losing my husband to cancer in 2003.
My prognosis was not the best and I was trying to come to terms with it, and
learn how to deal with it and move forward; this time without the support of my
darling husband.

I can not remember how I came across the Video Speech, but to this day I
remember Steve Jobs words;

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith… You’ve got
to find what you love.”

All of Steve’s speech was inspirational, but these particular words motivated
me beyond belief.
I decided to change my life ... 'take on' Cancer again and beat it, and since I
had lost one love, find what I love doing and learn to do it to the best of my
ability.
I knew I loved Macs and everything to do with Apple, but I had never had the
time to really pursue this passion.
Well, the rest is history, I threw my energies into ‘living with cancer' and
doing something I really love … working with Macs and anything Apple.

I still have the Video Speech and watched it again this morning after hearing
the sad news of Steve losing his battle with cancer.
Steve you were, and always will be an inspiration to me … Rest In Peace!

Kind Regards,

Ronni

Re: Steve Jobs

2011-10-05 Thread Mike Murray
When you look around the computer world and think about everything Steve has
initiated it's really awe-inspiring.

I was particularly impressed when I saw the address he gave to college students
some years ago where he said that, after he dropped out of 'official' college
himself, he attended a class on calligraphy and learned all about fonts,
kerning, typace design...and this inspired him to develop WISIWYG glorious
looking fonts on the early Lisa and Macs - and of course was eventually copied
by Microsoft and everyone else.

A great loss of a fabulous contributor to our lives.

Jobs will long be remembered for his unique contribution to the computer and
electronics industries.

I am sure that the writer of the article was fully aware of the
potential for misuse of Job's products as he was of the good use of
them. He was viewing the situation with respect to the Church from the
point of view of a glass being half full.

Re: Steve Jobs Resigns

2011-08-25 Thread Philippe Chaperon

Dear WAMUGers,

Although it was inevitable it was a very big shock to hear the news of
Steve Jobs resignation as CEO. As a long time user of Apple computers
I have developed a love for the company and stood fast by them when
many of my friends abandoned the platform during the great push by MS.
The return of Steve at the head of the company gave a new impetus, his
vision and positiveness did a lot to place our beloved company where
it is now. I guess that because of his positive influence, and having
seen how he brought the company back to be the leader and recongnised
as such by the consumers, there is this slight fear that by his
departure Apple might loose its impetus, vision and excellence. Life
is what it is, we all have to go at one time whether it is in
retirement or to the other side. Nonetheless it is still hard to come
to grips with it.

I will remain a supporter of this platform because I like the Apple
philosophy and I thank Steve for all he has done and wish him all the
very best.

Kind regards,

Philippe C

Truth be told a lot of us are probably being selfish in wanting to retain Steve
for as long as possible. He was a saviour when he came back, saving Apple from
extinction which is where they were heading. He brought back vision and
excellence to the company we all knew was great. He's not gone completely and
will retain much influence, tg.

In the press conference they referenced a video about the "so called"

The same guy then wrote one about Steve Jobs, which is actually quite good

For those interested, the links are here:-

Enjoy! Just thought I'd share it,.. :)

Definitely not! They have Tiger stripes now... :-)

We should snapshot our best Steve dress up efforts an upload them to

Actually, it was the late Robert Holmes a Court who purchased them. He then
offered them to Michael Jackson as part of the deal to get him to appear on
Telethon. Those old enough to remember Jackson's efforts at live television
at the time will probably consider it one of Homes a Court's less inspired
business decisions.

Just as an aside, one of the other sweeteners offered to Jackson was a
Telethon Fellowship for overseas study to be named after him. Imagine that,
the Michael Jackson Telethon Fellow in Paediatrics! This fellowship was only
awarded once to my knowledge (to me) before the ATO nobbled the overseas
Telethon Fellowships, and since 1992 all Telethon Fellowships have been
awarded for research and/or advanced studies within Australia.

John

Michael sold them years ago to Sony, so the remaining Beatles will never
see them again. Sad thing for Paul, as he actually had the chance to
buy them back in the early 80s, but didn't have enough money. He asked
Yoko to pitch in, and she said no. So Michael bought them!

The Beatles signed over the rights to their songs very early in their
careers. I guess they were convinced that selling albums would make
them more money than owning the rights to their songs.

Not to worry for billionaire Paul, as he owns a lot of other music, such
as the Buddy Holly catalogue, a bucketload of musicals. If he can't
have is own, then he'll buy everyone else's!

LONDON --- Beatles fan Steve Jobs could lose a large bite of his Apple
to his idols.

The Beatles' company, Apple Corps., is involved in a legal battle with
Jobs' Apple Computer, claiming the hardware manufacturer is in breach of
a 1991 agreement that that forbids it from using the trademark for any
application "whose principle content is music." The two companies have
been involved in a number of court battles over the years involving the
use of the Apple trademark.

Word among the legal community is that an out of court settlement could
be imminent and that it will massively dwarf the $26.5 million paid to
the Fab Four's company in 1991 in a row over trademark use.

One lawyer told Daily Variety, "People are expecting this to be the
biggest settlement anywhere in legal history, outside of a class action
suit. The numbers could be mind boggling."

Earlier this year, the computer company failed in a bid to have the
latest case heard in the United States, when a judge in London's High
Court in London granted jurisdiction in the U.K.

The litigation is seen as one of the main reasons behind Apple Corps.
preventing the Beatles catalog of songs being made available on the
computer company's iTunes song store.

Some speculation suggests the settlement could see Apple Corps.
becoming a major shareholder in the computer company, with Paul
McCartney maybe even becoming a board member.

Lord Grabiner and Daniel Toledano are acting for Apple Computer, while
Geoffrey Vos and Daniel Alexander are representing Apple Corps.

Despite splitting in 1970, the Beatles interests are still administered
by Apple Corps., which is owned by McCartney, Ringo Starr and the
families of John Lennon and George Harrison.

An Apple Computer rep declined to comment on the pending litigation and
pointed to an earlier statement that said the two companies have
"differeing interpretations" of the agreement.

In all honesty, most people think 'computer' not 'recording company from
last century' when they hear 'Apple'.

Strangely, I have often thought the startup chime on some macs sounds
remarkably like the openning note from Hard Day's Night...

Maybe they are still smarting over selling the rights to most of the

Hopefully one day we will all want to sue each other then settle out of

Steve Jobs Conacer surgery and imac delay?

2004-08-03 Thread Rod

Hi All!

Just been reading about Steve and his cancer surgery. I just realised one
reason why the iMac may have been delayed - Steve would not have been able to
show it off! If he has been sick for a while with cancer, he would have
known about this a few months ago, one would think (upper management in the
US are always having health checks). Being back on board in September would
time in quite well with the release of the new iMac. If it is a big change,
the Big Kahuna would want to be the one showing it off. Definitely wouldn´t
leave it to Phil Schiller :-) Nothing against Phil, but he is no Steve!
