Thanks Gerald, David and Eugene,

Went to the Apple Shop first - after making an appointment at the Genius Bar.
They fixed it on the spot by replacing the display (it took only 5 minutes).

Thanks again,

Re: Getting an iPhone 3GS Replacement Battery

2011-04-18 Thread Eugene
I went and bought a kit from China for pulling apart the iPhone and a replacement battery as well as some extra parts I thought I should replace whilst I had it open. All up it cost less than $20 including delivery.I then went on YouTube to find a few tutorials on pulling apart the phone. It took a fair while to actually pull it apart and replace the battery. The parts you are dealing with a minuscule and the tolerances are so fine it is almost impossible to get it right. There was every chance that once I put it together again the phone wouldn't work at all. With sweat floating off my forehead after one hour and with the able assistance of my young daughter who had better eyes and a steady hand it was restarted and the apple logo flashed on the screen. Would I do it again? Not in a fitAs it turned out the new battery only lasted a couple of months..

Hi Peter,

I would start by trashing your iPod's Photo cache as described in this Apple
support document.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314

Post back if that doesn't solve the problem.

Re: iPhone 3Gs Sync issues.

2010-08-23 Thread Daniel Forsdyke

Hi Peter

I had a similar problem with my iPhone 3G. Every time for about a month when I
plugged it into the computer, via USB, I would get a message that said it could
not sync and that it could not find the required file.

As part of the troubleshooting I ended up unselecting all the media files, such
as music and videos, etc. This ended up resolving the issue but meant I did not
have any media on the iPhone.

I must admit I never worked out a solution that allowed me to get media back on
the 3G as I then upgraded to the iPhone4 a few weeks later and can sync all the
media without problem.

The iPhone will not work with iSync as it is designed to only sync with the
computer via iTunes. Also it will not allow file transfer via Bluetooth either
in terms of syncing or file transfer between mobiles - something to do with
security.

Hi Tobes,

Do you have any photos that you have saved from e-mail, or photos
saved from a website while using Safari on your 3GS?
Since the last update iPhoto or Image Capture won't recognise the
iPhone if this is the case.

Delete all the images that you didn't CREATE with the iPhone camera
and iPhoto will open and recognise the iPhone.

Hi Toby

You could try removing the following files to the desktop and see if it
makes a difference.
Macintosh HD/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences.
The 2 files to remove are:-
 com.apple.iphoto.plist and
 com.apple.launchservices.plist

Remove them to the desktop, restart and see if that works.
If not, you can put them back to the same location.

(oh, and you may also find a couple of extension in the same directory as
above, but in the folder ByHost.
Called com.apple.ImageCapture.lot of numbers here.plist
You could remove that as well.

A couple of things to try here as well just incase:-
http://blog.to.it/how-to-make-iphoto-or-picasa-recognize-your-camera-again

If nothing there, try creating another User account, log in and see if it
works in the new user or not.

Hope that helps.

So odd. But sorted... Until it isn't. The only thing I can think of is that last night I had been working in my Windows Partition, then restarted via boot camp back into my Mac partition, whereas this morning I just started up straight into the Mac OS... Mm. Might do a couple of tests.\par

iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Mike Murray

Hi muggers

All you iPhone-savvy people can switch off here, but for those who are
still thinking about getting an iPhone, here's some feedback on my
experience...

I'm new to smartphones, and I got my unlocked 32Gb 3GS iphone from
Apple online store on July 11, opened it up, put in the SIM card from
my 6310 Nokia, synced it through iTunes and away it went. The phone
battery was even charged, which I didn't expect.

Played around over the next few days, downloaded some apps, made some
calls, tried out the GPS, looked at websites, etc. Most of that was
through the Wifi network at home, but some through the Telstra network
and other Wifi networks that the phone found readily. The overall
experience was superb, highly recommended.

Went away for the weekend with a bunch of friends to Banksia Springs
near Dwellingup which is a mobile dead zone, and showed it off...I
think I've sold three more now. Went for a walk in the bush and came
within a weak signal range so used the GPS (which is excellent,
although slow downloading).

Yesterday I got curious (and a little nervous) about the costs I was
incurring so I went to the Telstra website, worked out how to access
my account, found the page called 'my data' which has a neat little
table showing every time the phone had accessed data. The table listed
one line item where I'd spent $23.32 and about a dozen others between
50 cents and 2 dollars. Total, about $30. I thought, a well I can live
with that. Then I noticed it was page 1, with a next button beside it.
In fact there were 4 pages, totalling $116!!!

I searched the website and finally found that the mobile plan I was on
($30 a month) did not have a data component so I was being charged the
GSM casual rate, which is 22c flagfall plus 2.2c/Kb. That's $22 a
Mb!!! The phone says I've dowloaded 6.2Mb and uploaded 550Kb, so
there's a rough correlation.

So today I raced into Booragoon and bought a vodaphone SIM with a
200Mb data package on a 6 month contract for $30/month, ported the
number across and hopefully have stopped the bleeding. It works fine
so far, so I'll see what the experience is like over the next little
while

A key issue here is the number of times when the phone accessed the
Telstra network while I was at home close to, but obviously just out
of Wifi range. Is there a way to safeguard against inadvertently
accessing the phone network if you don't want to?

And the moral of the story? Keep an eye on your useage, know what
you're being charged and I can now understand those horrifying stories
of people racking up hundreds of dollars without realising it. At $22/
Mb it's not hard to do!

Cheers
Mike

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Gordon Campbell

If you go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ on your iPhone you
can customise some of your settings, including the APN that is used to
access the data network. You can just enter garbage into the APN field
and get the settings. Then your iPhone will be set to a data access
point that doesn't exist, effectively breaking your ability to get
data over the mobile network. This would make sure you didn't access
data accidentally.

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Susan Hastings

Hi Mike, I just added a $10.00 200mb data plan to my $30.00 per month
mobile plan with Telstra - I didn't want to switch to another service.

The iphone goes for wifi whenever it possibly can - its the first
choice. So, if you are at home and it is choosing the 3g network
first, that does seem odd.

Resetting the APN each time you go out would be a pain!

cheers, Susan.

Hi muggers

All you iPhone-savvy people can switch off here, but for those who
are still thinking about getting an iPhone, here's some feedback on
my experience...

I'm new to smartphones, and I got my unlocked 32Gb 3GS iphone from
Apple online store on July 11, opened it up, put in the SIM card
from my 6310 Nokia, synced it through iTunes and away it went. The
phone battery was even charged, which I didn't expect.

Played around over the next few days, downloaded some apps, made
some calls, tried out the GPS, looked at websites, etc. Most of
that was through the Wifi network at home, but some through the
Telstra network and other Wifi networks that the phone found
readily. The overall experience was superb, highly recommended.

Went away for the weekend with a bunch of friends to Banksia
Springs near Dwellingup which is a mobile dead zone, and showed it
off...I think I've sold three more now. Went for a walk in the bush
and came within a weak signal range so used the GPS (which is
excellent, although slow downloading).

Yesterday I got curious (and a little nervous) about the costs I
was incurring so I went to the Telstra website, worked out how to
access my account, found the page called 'my data' which has a neat
little table showing every time the phone had accessed data. The
table listed one line item where I'd spent $23.32 and about a dozen
others between 50 cents and 2 dollars. Total, about $30. I thought,
a well I can live with that. Then I noticed it was page 1, with a
next button beside it. In fact there were 4 pages, totalling $116!!!

I searched the website and finally found that the mobile plan I was
on ($30 a month) did not have a data component so I was being
charged the GSM casual rate, which is 22c flagfall plus 2.2c/Kb.
That's $22 a Mb!!! The phone says I've dowloaded 6.2Mb and uploaded
550Kb, so there's a rough correlation.

So today I raced into Booragoon and bought a vodaphone SIM with a
200Mb data package on a 6 month contract for $30/month, ported the
number across and hopefully have stopped the bleeding. It works
fine so far, so I'll see what the experience is like over the next
little while

A key issue here is the number of times when the phone accessed the
Telstra network while I was at home close to, but obviously just
out of Wifi range. Is there a way to safeguard against
inadvertently accessing the phone network if you don't want to?

And the moral of the story? Keep an eye on your useage, know what
you're being charged and I can now understand those horrifying
stories of people racking up hundreds of dollars without realising
it. At $22/Mb it's not hard to do!

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Susan Hastings

I've just checked my data usage. Using email and light web browsing,
checking weather and news, I've used 10% of my data plan in just over
one week. That's using the iphone on 3g data as much as I want to. It
does seem that the 200mb of data is going to more than cover my needs.

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Mike,

As Susan has mentioned, the iPhone uses a priority system:

wifi 3G GPRS (or Edge for Telstra)

If you have wifi and 3G turned on, it will try to connect to wifi
first. Failing that, it will default to the 3G network. If that's
turned off, it will just use GPRS.

One thing to remember is that when you have your iPhone in sleep mode,
it will turn the wifi radio off to preserve battery life, so if you
have anything set to connect to the net automatically, such as mail
set to push or fetch, it will do so using cellular data even with wifi
turned on.

If you don't want this to happen, just remember to set mail to manual,
push notifications off, etc. Basically, anything that would connect
automatically.

Unless it's charging at the time, in which case the wifi remains active.
---
Also Mike, you can see if you are connected to wifi or 3G by what is
showing on the top left of your iPhone screen.

If you see a 3G you are connected to 3G.

If you see this symbol then you are on wifi

Skype shouldn't use any data for the iPhone, as I believe (unless it's

Hi Mike,

the GPS doesn't need a mobile phone signal to work. It only needs 3
GPS satellites overhead. The software you are using may need to
download maps to use with the GPS points.

I did some bush walking and investigated the area whilst at home
connected to my WiFi. When I got to my bush walking destination the
area which was out of mobile range was still accessible because the
most recent maps were cached by the phone. I was then able to plot my
progress on the map with the GPS.

If you are in the middle of the Nullabor and have map software loaded
into your phone you can happily use the GPS.

BTW I have been very happy with the new Turn by Turn GPS software
released by Sygic.

Buying an unlocked iPhone 3Gs - does it get locked onc e you use it?

2009-07-03 Thread Susan Hastings

Hi Ronni, I looked at later emails, but there doesn't appear to be a
response to your question at the end about being locked to a carrier
in order to work.

Now, I am not sure, I would have thought not, since other mobile
phones don't have to be locked to a carrier. You can swap different
carriers' SIMS in these phones without any problems. For example, I
have a little Samsung unlocked phone that has used Telstra, Optus and
China Mobile SIMS without any problems.

However, the iphone is linked to iTunes, and this MIGHT change things.

I hope someone knows for sure because I would like to be able to use a
different SIM when travelling. My present iPhone is locked to Telstra,
so I haven't been able to use the China Mobile card.

cheers, Susan.

point that Telstra is Australia's largest, fastest and most
reliable 3G network. He then sent me an email with Telstra's
new iPhone Plans.
I'm interested in your opinions on these plans in comparison to
other carriers please.

Telstra's monthly included data download is terrible I think, $5
for the $30 $40 plans which equates to 5MB of Data ... excess
data charged at $1.00/MB ... yikes!

And then there is this in Telstra's -Things you need to know:
	1. iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G are configured to work only with
the wireless services provided by Telstra.

Does this mean you cannot access any other wireless network?

http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/iphone/pricing.html

Optus still seems to have the better plans. I have stayed with
Telstra all these years for its better coverage, but I'm
seriously contemplating a change of carrier for an iPhone 3G S.
Telsyte principal research analyst Warren Chaisatien says Optus
has again released the most aggressive iPhone plan prices,
increasing data allowances for the internet-savvy phone and
introducing plans with unlimited phone calls and messaging.

Optus iPhone 3GS plans include the company's popular $59 plan
with data boosted from 500MB to 700MB a month and so-called
timeless plans with unlimited calls and messaging starting at
$99 and including 1.5GB of downloads.

And Telstra is the only carrier not to offer iPhone tethering,
allowing use of the iPhone as a modem.

Hi Susan,

Ray Forma emailed me off list with these comments:

Ronni,

all correct except ... then if I decide to change to another Carrier
the new carrier's SIM would work on my phone.

Thank you Ray,

Ahh, now I 'think' I understand. So even though I can get the
iPhone 3G S cheaper through Telstra by going on a 24 month Plan (I
know their data rate fees are not good).
The $30 plan telstra will give me a iPhone 3GS 32GB for only
$549 ... Apple iPhone 3G S 32GB will cost me $1,040.

So you are saying, purchase the iPhone from Apple (at the higher
price), then I could put my current SIM card (which is Telstra) in
it and it will work, then if I decide to change to another
Carrier ... this SIM would work on that carrier?

But, if I purchase the iPhone from Telstra, I'm 1) locked into a 24
mth contract. 2) when that 24mth contract ends, I would not be
able to use another SIM card from another Carrier?

Is this what you mean?

Many thanks for your advice I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi WAMUGers interested in purchasing a new iPhone 3G S,

Optus Offering Up To 50% Off Upgrade Fees To Current iPhone 3G
Customers:
Optus have sent around an email to current iPhone 3G customers
offering up to 50% off the upgrade fee when you sign up for the new
3GS handset for 24 months.

The percentage that you actually get seems to very between 20% and
50%, and looks to depend on how far into your current contract you
currently are.

The actual upgrade fee itself for each person also varies, and
apparently won’t be made known until tomorrow (although some people
are saying that Optus are telling them when they call up). However, if
you are still paying off your current 3G handset, you’ll still have to
pay that off on the new contract as well – so make sure you factor in
that continued cost when if you decide to upgrade.

The email is also requiring potential iPhone 3GS owners to register
their place in the queue for tonight’s midnight launch, so if you were
planning on just rocking up tonight, you might want to look into
trying to register.

2009-06-25 Thread Mike Murray

Hi group

Some advice from the wise ones to the curious but ignorant please...

Now that it looks like we'll be able to buy unlocked iPhones from
Apple real soon, I sense that this will be great but I don't know
enough to be sure.

For example - does a sim from a bog-standard Nokia work in an iPhone?
Presumably without 3G speeds?

Would I need to buy a prepaid Next - G plan to get the full benefit?

If I go to the UK for a month later on this year ...can I buy sims
native to the UK network to use in an unlocked iPhone? (to avoid
roaming fees)

Presumably the Wifi features work regardless of what sim is installed
- the sim is only used for internet access over the mobile phone
network if you're not in Wifi range - do I understand this correctly?

Grateful to hear from experienced users on their plans and advice.

been given the same story by the various staff there:

Outright Pricing (Unlocked for your carrier's pleasure)
$879 – 16GB
$1040 – 32GB

Re: iPhone 3Gs

Hi Gordon, they will probably be on sale at Apple Resellers here in
the West, as the iPhone 3g was. cheers, Susan.

Unless a reseller has a relationship with a carrier they cannot sell the
iPhone. Even then, they can only sell that particular carriers offering.
I doubt that it will end up as an outright product for resellers as I am
sure the carriers would have an agreement with Apple. That may even extend
to the Apple store as there is an expectation of being able to 'demonstrate'
the iPhone. I can't imagine Vodafone being happy with the outright offer at
that pricing though. At the end of the day Apple will do what suits them.

Yes, and unfortunately, we cannot buy the iPhone GS from the Apple
Store, at least its not an option on the online web page. So, it
seems, we are stuck with buying a locked version at carriers' prices.

iPhone 3Gs

2009-06-24 Thread Stuart Evans
Hi all,

Vodafone are finally releasing the iPhone on prepaid.
Plus good deals on contracts.

Contract
8GB - free on 59,69,79,99 and unlimited
16GB - free on 69,79,99 and unlimited
32GB - free on unlimited

Prepaid
8gb - $759
16gb - $929
32gb - $1129

No word on prepaid costs though. Given the Telstra pricing I would expect a
fairly high cost per MB.

Anyone down Albany way interested please pop in.
Also of note, 3G is planned to be available across WA in Vodafone coverage
areas by September 1.

Cheers,
Stuart
