Re: New iMac Advice
Thank you to all WAMUGgers who have answered my query re the new iMac specs. I appreciate your comments. Now to sit down and do the heart and head sums. The FW800 port gives excellent opportunity for adding secondary storage later, very fast but not compared to an internal drive. New iMac Advice
Dear WAMUGgers If I was *tempted* to buy a new iMac 24 3.06GB at Apple Ed price of $2787, would it be good value to upsize to 4GHz RAM instead of 2GHz (2 x 2 GHz v 2 x 1GHz) for an extra $269.50, and to upsize the HDD from its 500GB to 750GB [Plus A$ 135.30] or to 1TB [Plus A$ 333.30]? I'm not really worried about upgrading to wireless mouse and keyboard at this time. The specs look Ok to me out of the box for what we currently need, but I've always subscribed to the good advice of getting the highest specs we can at purchase. Would it be better to update later, if needed, with Apple or non-Apple hardware? Daniel, other? Just dreaming but Elaine's Ruby iMac is getting very slow with Tigger and all her digital pics and rellie's PPTs on board. We'll need a new baby to do it all on one day soon. Re: New iMac Advice
I think it's always been exceptionally cheaper to buy RAM separate from your Apple purchase but that was when you could keep your standard RAM chips and add in extra ones yourself. I think the iMac only has the 2 RAM chips that come preloaded so you'd be replacing 2GB of RAM if you wanted to upgrade using non-Apple purchased RAM. In terms of hard drive space you can easily get an external one at a later date if you end up needing it for a decent price. In your shoes I would go for a bit more hard drive space than I think I'd need but not worry about maxing it. Hi Rob Thanks for your reply. Maybe I might run VMWare too? But it's all relative really. The base iMac now must be at least 1000% more capable than Ruby? What about the 3.06? Re: New iMac Advice
Keep in mind that the genuine Apple RAM is ECC Registered, where as any RAM you buy is likely to be non-ECC registered unless you spend quite a bit of money on it. ECC registered RAM as listed by Wikipedia.org is: Error-correcting memory Main article: Dynamic random access memory#Errors and error correction Because soft errors are extremely common in the DRAM of computers used in satellites and space probes, such memory is structured as ECC memory (also called EDAC protected memory). Typically every bit of memory is refreshed at least 15 times per second. During this memory refresh, the memory controller reads each word of memory and writes the (corrected) word back.[citation needed] Such memory controllers traditionally use a Hamming code, although some use triple modular redundancy. Even though a single cosmic ray can upset many physically neighboring bits in a DRAM, such memory systems are designed so that neighboring bits belong to different words, so such single event upsets (SEUs) cause only a single error in any particular word, and so can be corrected by a single-bit error correcting code. As long as no more than a single bit in any particular word is hit by an error between refreshes, such a memory system presents the illusion of an error-free memory. Re - New Imac keyboard
Distilled water is a suitable medium for washing contaminated items - in the olden days there were some celebrated demonstrations of TVs working while fully immersed in tanks of distilled water. The problem with a keyboard is drying it out. But if the keypad is a sealed one-piece membrane you may have a chance of recovery by carefully drilling some holes in the bottom of the case and setting it in a warm place to dry out for a couple of weeks. I would buy a new keyboard in the meantime. Cheers, Paul. -- Dr Paul R. That sounds like a very good idea actually, i am getting a little infuriated that we can get all these lovely things, and yet to look after them properly you need to buy so many after market products, for my husbands MacBook we have the plastic case, screen cover, keyboard cover (maybe I should get one of these for myself) and the same goes for the kids Nintendo's - so its not just apple - but it would be nice to have products that can withstand 3 kids a hubby and an overly large pup without having to resort to these. Re: New Imac keyboard
Sorry for your misfortune, but actual design of keyboard could be saviour? As it looks and feels if there is not much chance of liquid penetrating surface too much as with powerbook keyboards. Try a good burst of WD40 or some other lubricant of similar purchase, then blast it with air hose or just reverse vacuum cleaner. Wipe keyboard with Red Rooster toilette or baby wipes, last resort warm wash cloth with mild detergent removes greasy feel and some smell, let it air for few hours and it should heal. Electronic stores have lots of variations for WD40 without odour, but also come with hefty price and I always find WD40 does job very well when moisture is concerned. Red Rooster toilettes are also indispensable as monitor and laptop cleaning cloths no detergent, but KFC have some form of detergent do not use. Cheers! `Rob... STOP THERE : WD40 is good for getting rid of moisture , BUT with it's oil content it's not so good for electrical contacts. But the idea is well founded ... just use a different product . The one I know about is ULS Electrolube : quote A fast drying cleaning solvent for use on electronic and mechanical assemblies. Removes oil, grease and flux contaminants. safe on most plastics Similar productsmaybe available at Electrical wholesalers , Jaycar , Tandy etc . Cheers! `Rob... New Imac keyboard
Hello all, I have a new I mac keyboard that I have spilt a cola based drink on. I mopped it up as best I could straight away, but am unsure if I am able to take it apart and clean it as the keys are now sticky , and I am thinking that cola + sugar + lovely new keyboard won't be a good combination. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated, or else its off to someone who knows an awful lot more than me about keyboards asap. Just as a note if anyone is looking at buying one, it is a beautiful thing to type on and not as awkward as the laptop pads due to their extra length I suppose and now my old one seems really clunky. Re: New Imac keyboard
Pull it apart IMMEDIATELY. Cola contains acid which is causing oxidation of the circuitry inside the keyboard. You really need to pull it apart and clean it all off from the inside. It is a pain, but I failed to do this quick enough with my $120 Logitech G15 gaming keyboard and it is now sitting at the back of the room to be used as spare parts when I finally get around to replacing it. Re: Any new iMac comming?
Bart, as the current Aluminium iMacs were only introduced in August of this year, I would doubt there will be any new models in the near term. I've certainly not heard of any rumours. Our 24 Al iMac finally arrived a few weeks ago after ordering it the day after they were released in August - a 2 month wait. - due I believe to ordering the new Bluetooth keyboard which was still being certified by the FCC (and possibly because we went for the 2.8GHz CPU). The one good thing was we qualified for the $12.95 Leopard upgrade. Very sweet machine and far faster than our old 17 G5 iMac. I just need to work out how to get iChat (Leopard) on the iMac to auto-accept a screen sharing call from my laptop so I can remote control it from work. :-) -Mart On 27/10/2007, at 6:14 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all I'm in the market to buy a 24inch iMac ,whats the roumours on any updates on the imacs, before i buy one.Should i wait just a liitle bit longer. Re: New imac advice wanted
Hi Graham, I would be waiting for the new OS in a few weeks and saving some dollars. Don't forget to ask for a deal at David Jones or JB HiFI. DJs were including software packs like Office Works before the new models came out. Possibly will still do similar. All it requires is to ask. DJs at Garden city were clearing old models last week. They had some Apple laptops still sealed up in cartons. The cheapest was about twelve hundred bucks. JB Hi FI in Myaree do good deals too. Last week I bought am iPod nano and Micromedia audio recorder from them. Both at a much cheaper price than Apple au. and Curtin's student price. They had plenty of stock too, including the new iMacs on display and several of each type in sealed cartons. Good luck, Paul. -- Dr Paul R. New imac advice wanted
Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a new desktop machine to complement my G4 powerbook. I'm thinking 20 imac, 2.4GHz, and have a couple of questions 1. Should I wait for Leopard? 2. Most seem to come with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO but winthrop shop at UWA advertise Radeon X1600 Graphics card (with NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT in the 24}. Which is better? Does it matter? I'm not a big game player or video editor at the moment but I don't want to limit the options. Are there any other options I should consider? I would want 2GB RAM but otherwise 'as advertised' seems fine. 3. There seems to be a bit more price variability than there used to be in the apple world? Are there any special deals around at the moment? In terms of price i've seen: $2,149: 20, 2.4GHz, 1GB, 320GB, Radeon HD 2600 PRO: @ nextbyte, stirling highway $2,069.10 20, 2.16GHz, 1GB, 250GB, Radeon X1600 : @ UWA Campus (edu price, RRP is $2,299, they say) Seems that it's not much of edu discount for a lesser machine. I also saw some at Myer in Perth, just as they were closing on Sunday - they seemed fairly cheap but I had no time - and now I'm back in Dongara for a few weeks. It's been over 300 days since the iMac line of computers was upgraded in any way so an update is imminent. Apple have in the last year or so staggered computer releases and just released new products at any time and not waiting for a PR event to stop speculation. I highly doubt anything will happen with-in the week with the iPhone being released just today! If he is willing to wait he maybe better off to get an old stock iMac using a C2D rather then the new Santa Rose processors which should be stepping into the iMacs which may cause issues. We all know that Rev A products of anything are always rubbish! (On a side note, rather than the iMac being just upgraded internally it may actually be coming in a new form factor which will have more issues then just a processor upgrade!) Personal choice but later revisions are always better then the Rev A! Interesting reading how the iPhone was put together and how they are trying to improve reliability! RAM Upgrade for new iMac
Hi WAMUGers Looking at buying an iMac for xmas. It comes with 2? ram slots and 1 x 512 module installed I think. I would like to get lots of RAM for Motion etc. I can get 2 x 1GB modules for $189 each ( and I guess I throw the 512 one away). Re: RAM Upgrade for new iMac
Rod, The new iMac has only one spare memory slot. The 512MB is on the board, so the max you can install is 512MB + 2GB (DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200)). You can do this via 'build-to-order'. You can upgrade to a total of 2.5GB RAM by adding a 2GB Module, but they are rather pricing at the moment,...about $1375 (or anywhere up to $1770 depending where you look) for a 2GB module! So at this point in time until pricing comes down your best bet is to add a 1GB module (about $169) then once prices come down in say, 6 months, then look at upgrading it if need be and trade back the 1GB module. Sort of more worth it in my mind,..and that's what most of my clients have down when we've ordered them new iMac's. :o) Hope that helps. New iMac G5 Details
From: http://www.macobserver.com PARIS, FRANCE - Apple announced new iMacs today, bringing the long-awaited G5 processor to the consumer product line. The iMac G5 includes a new all-in-one form factor similar to Apple's current line of Cinema Displays, and Apple is touting the design as the world's thinnest desktop PC, at only 2 thick. Apple is offering a 17 1.6 GHz model with a combo drive, a 64 MB NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra video card, two USB 1.1 ports, three USB 2.0 ports, two FireWire ports, 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, a built-in 56K modem, S-Video and composite video out, an 80 GB hard drive, and 256 MB of RAM. The mid-range model will feature a 17 LCD display with a 1.8 GHz processor, a SuperDrive, and the other features from the entry-level model. A 20 high-end model will sport a 180 GB of Serial ATA storage. The 20 model is 2.2 inches thick. The company is offering a 17 education model that has no optical drive, nor a modem. It also has video card with only 32 MB of memory, as opposed to the 64 MB cards on the consumer models. During the Apple Expo keynote this morning, Phil Schiller also said that the iMac G5 has built-in speaker at the bottom of the iMac that are designed to reflect sound off of the desktop towards the user. Apple's iMac G5 spec sheet also notes that the new model supports wall mounting through a VESA mount, an industry standard mounting system. Mr. Schiller also demonstrated that the back of the iMac is accessible by removing three screws, which allows the user to take off the entire back of the unit. From there, one can easily add memory, or change the drive. In addition, Mr. Schiller showed that the iMac G5 has 3 fans, and that the unit is quieter than a whisper. Also of note is the fact that in a video for the new iMac, the introductory text used the phrase From the creators of the iPod. To this end, Apple is comparing the way the iMac looks on its stand to the way that an iPod sits in its Dock. Each iMac model can support up to 2 GB of RAM, a substantial increase over previous iMac models. The company has also added a digital audio output, the same output currently found on Apple's professional Power Mac G5 product line. None of the models include an AirPort Extreme card, though the card is available as an option. 17 1.6GHz - A$2199 17 1.8GHz - A$2499 20 1.8GHz - A$3199 Education model US$1,199 (roughly A$1721) rmkay

Re: New imac extra ram cost??
Anybody know if installing extra Ram on new Imacs ( Want for Photoshop) requires extra installation fee? If so How much? Installing RAM in the internal slot on the flat panel iMacs requires the use of new heatsink gaskets and heatsink compound, so it's not for the fainthearted. As for how much the extra fee is, that would depend on who you used. If you're buying a new flat panel iMac it may be best to 'max out' the RAM in the internal slot at purchase time so that you (or the dealer) don't have to upgrade the DIMM in the internal slot. You can then update the user accessible DIMM later at your leisure. Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer It must be bunnies! New iMac prices !!
Hi folks, The new iMac prices being passed around are outrageous ! Whatever happened to the entry level Macintosh ?? Regards, Stephen Chape
Re: The new iMac
As an introduction price it is quite reasonable, reasonable enough for a notorious tight-arse like me to seriously think about opening my wallet for the top end. A G4 with flat screen screen (all be it a 15er) and DVD+CD burner for less than the top of the line single processor G4 tower without a screen. yes please. But what I like about it is, given the mass of the base (9Kg) and the low mass of the screen* is that it introduces the possibility of apple upgrading the screen size to 17 and possibly 19 would be a doodle as prices for the flat screens drop. Ow yeh... ONE gripe but a BIG one for me Come on Apple! mirroring on the external monitor port only!! PLEASE give us a break and support extended desktop, the laptops have it and the towers will take a PCI video card why not the iMacs. As it is I'd probably be plugging my 17 or 20 CRT in to it even with mirroring - up the resolution to max and work on the CRT unless I need it for playing games on my PC. OK it may be because I'm spoilt by having my old home mac (7300/200 + matrox card) with 17 20 inch screens and my work mac (PB G3 with built in screen + 17). *the difference between a 15 17 inch studio display is about 1.3 KG of which a sizable amount of that will be the bulkier casing used by the studio screens relative to the iMacs screen. The difference between the 15 and the 22 inch is about 6 kg so a 22 inch display may be beyond the arms weight +safety margin capacity. Any thoughts? Peter Bull -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] I guess there are a couple of things to take into consideration here. Firstly, Apple are still selling the CRT iMac, which start at $1895. Secondly, this a brand new product. Prices will always be more expensive than they will be in 6 months or a years time. Do you remember how much the original Bondi iMac came out at? $2695! Apple had cheaper alternatives at the time then too. Nearly 2 years later we had a base iMac price of $1495! (Well, until the dollar hit the floor!) I would put my money on the screen being the cause of the higher price. LCD prices are continually falling, so it will only be a matter of time before cheaper flat screen iMacs are available. Take a look at the specs as well - a G4 700 with an LCD screen for $2995. For $3895 you can get a G4 733 tower with no screen! Considering most people never use their PCI slots (and I'll stand by that one!), an LCD iMac is a bargain! Also, take a look at a few of the reviews and articles floating around the various new sites (non-mac ones). All agree that Apple are not fighting with PCs on price anymore. They are differentiating themselves from PCs through the features of the machine and the solutions it provides. No PC comes out of the box with such easy to use apps like iMovie, iPhoto and iTunes. There is not a lot of difference between the various makes of PCs, so they have to fight out there market on price alone. Channel 9 obviously didn't take into account the GST and AppleAus factors ;-) woz At 11:17 +0800 09/01/2002, Warren Jones wrote: I just saw a preview of a story about to be shown on Channel 9 11 am news in a few mins. new iMac lacking sound-in port
Hi All My enthusiasm for the new iMac has now been tempered somewhat after looking at the techspecs and pictures (http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html). Judging from this, these wondrous new machines do not have sound in capacity other than the built in mic. One of my favourite things with the iMac is that one can hook up, via the sound in port, a radio, record player or guitar amp and make simple stereo CD quality recording direct to Hard Drive using applications like Coaster or Protools Free. Its certainly not high end audio manipulation/professional recording studio stuff, but its fun which is something I thought the iMac was all about! If/when I have to replace my current iMac, I would hate to have to go to a PC to be able to continue doing this. John Bussell
Re: new iMac lacking sound-in port
Not sure why Apple has taken this approach but it is a real pain. They dropped the sound-in port on the G4 last year.. now you need to buy a USB microphone ie. iMic which go for around $90 (Aus) Plus you have to set the sound input to the iMic each time you want to use it (if you have rebooted). As it is a USB device it does not exist until after bootup so your sound input will drop back to a default such as internal mic or cd. I have written an AppleScript which will set the sound input to whatever you want, just make it a startup item an forget about it. If any one wants it let me know. Take it easy... The new iMac
With the impending release of the new iMac does this mean that the present supposedly outdated one will be superseded. It seems to me that if Apple are going to stop producing the current model and Apple Australia are going to price the entry level iMac at $3000 then that is the end of Macs in Australia. Macs had a reputation for being expensive compared to PC's (yes I know about Total Cost of Ownership and better reliability etc), then the iMac became very competitively priced compared with the Dark Side, and now it looks like they will become pricey again. Any thoughts? Peter Bull -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: new iMac (i want one)
Yes, indeed... we always know when we want something - that's the moment we see Steve having so much fun in front of that huge audience! Cubes, spheres, dual processors, TiBooks... oh yes, we love 'em all ;-) Since 1998, my slogan for the Apple iMac has been: 'I think, therefore iMac' ... and I'm surprised Steve hasn't built it into the past couple of keynotes, maybe he doesn't read our posts as often as we'd like ;-) Thanks to everyone who stayed up and turned up last night to make it an enjoyable experience. Special thanks to Matt and Martin, rally drivers of the 2 PowerMac G4s with Airport base station!
