Bible study event based on TAGS
Like Bert Miller, I don't want to be pushy, nor do I want to make a big moulage, but I would like you to know about this fall's fourth annual "Life Lessons From Mayberry: It's All There in Black and White." It's a fun, four-day event with Bible study breakout sessions on favorite B&W TAGS episodes, great preaching, TAGS music, and more. While there, you'll also enjoy an orchestra concert playing Mayberry tunes and a Mayberry Tribute Artist Lunch with Barney and Thelma Lou, Gomer, Goober, Mayor Pike, Ernest T. Bass, "Darling--Briscoe Darling," Otis (O-tis-camp-bell . . .) and our own Allan Newsome as Floyd the Barber. You can also meet the fabulous LeRoy McNees ("Mayberry on Record" and "Quiet Sam")--a heck of a human being. Plus, this event immediately precedes Mayberry Days, so you can easily leave at noon on 9/24 and travel the 2.5 hours to Mt. Airy for Mayberry Days. Makes for a full week of all things Mayberry. Here's the skinny: September 21-24 at Ridgecrest Conference Center, right outside Asheville, NC All inclusive price is $295 per person (based on double occupancy)--includes 3 nights in the campus hotel, 8 meals, and the entire conference Come alone, bring a group, or make it a family reunion. But do it. Just do it! Last year's event was a sell-out, so check it out if you're interested: www.lifeway.com/mayberry, or email me for more info. Much obliged. Favorite Hymns
Hey Matt, I'm sure many will answer, but "There Is a Fountain" is the hymn Andy and Barney are singing in "The Case of the Punch in the Nose." That hymn is so beautiful. I do a TAGS Bible study event at a conference center and we have shown that clip, then a soloist softly starts accompanying the clip on the piano. Then as the clip fades, he picks up and finishes the entire song. It is so moving! A Mayberry Moment
I had a Mayberry moment this week when I asked a neighborhood lady, likely in her late 80's, to do a men's pants alteration for me. When I asked her the cost, she said, "Well, it's a little more than $5, but not quite $10, so would $7 be okay?" In this day of what often seems to be stinging service prices, I thought it was such a sweet response and it reminded me of Bert Miller, who never wanted to offend anyone by charging too much. BTW, I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd charged $20 for this tedious job so I'm gonna come out $10 to the good when I happily and gratefully pay $10. "Bless her heart." Despicable character
When I saw that Patty is about to read Mayberry 101, I just had to pipe in and say what a wonderful book it is. It's one of my two go-to books for any question I have about TAGS. Neal Brower has done a fantastic job of letting us in on behind the scenes info--why the writers used certain phrases, why certain props were used, what was going on in the world when the script was written, and much more. Patty, you are going to love it and I highly recommend it to any TAGS fan. http://www.amazon.com/Mayberry-101-Behind-Scenes-Classic/dp/0895872188 Remember Mayberry Comes to Wesminster this weekend in Westminster, SC. If you're within driving distance, it's a fun way to spend an April weekend. Tom Rusk and his team go all out to make this a great experience for any TAGS fan. Rest in Peace, Ange
I was away on vacation when I heard the sad news of last week. But I was comforted that so many of my friends immediately reached out to me in sympathy—all with the same message: “When I heard about Andy Griffith’s passing, you were the first person I thought of; I know how much you loved him.” I was so touched that people would associate me with him and the show. And I also want to say how touched I have been by the beautiful comments and tributes made by my “Digest Family.” It was comforting to get back to email and read through all the daily digests of last week. I’m glad to know so many of you cried, too. It’s obvious we all feel the same way—you have captured our feelings so well with your posts. One more thing: Danny asked if any of us have children named Andy. I’m proud to say that I have an Andy who was raised on TAGS and loves it as much as I do. Life Lessons From Mayberry: It's All There in Black and White--a 3-day Bible study event
If you just can’t get enough of Mayberry, please plan now to make a pre-Mayberry Days stop at “Life Lessons From Mayberry: It’s All There in Black and White” in Ridgecrest, N.C. (right outside Asheville). This three-day Bible study event starts at 3 pm on Tuesday, 9/25 and ends at noon on Thursday, 9/27, so you can head right on up to Mt. Airy for Mayberry Days. You’ll enjoy five breakout sessions—each showing and discussing a popular black and white episode; it’s s much fun to watch these in a big crowd! Following the episode is a Bible study on the truths and parables gleaned from that episode. Tuesday and Wednesday nights and Thursday morning you’ll attend warm, wonderful worship services with great hymn singing, bluegrass music, and powerful preaching. (And get this: Pastor Craig Hamlin, our event preacher, was born in Mt. Airy and his great-grandmother babysat Andy Griffith.) Following worship both nights will be a fun bluegrass concert, one featuring Dobro legend LeRoy “Mack” McNees (“Mayberry on Record” and “Quiet Sam.”). Dinners are served family style and include g-o-o-d home cooking (last year for example: meatloaf, fried apples, mac and cheese, green beans, rolls, pecan pie, iced tea). Wednesday lunch is a boxed picnic lunch. Look for plenty of photo ops with WBMUTBB?’s Tom Rusk’s Mayberry Squad car and “The Mayberry Deputy”—David Browning. “Such goin’s on, such goin’s on.” Individuals and groups are welcome. A Special Saturday
I so agree with Lee's comments that the spirit of Mayberry is alive and well and that we are all part of something special because of TAGS. Even though I am a life-long fan, I continue to be amazed at the show's vast fan base ("Big ain't the word for it."). I kinda feel sorry for all those non-fans who have no idea that we TAGS people are "living in another world"--a world of kindness and friendliness and decency. I've recently been in Mt. Airy where I found myself under the "Mayberry spell"--the townspeople were so friendly, the local police offered to help, the merchants and hotelier were most accommodating. And I've had the great opportunity to be with some of the fantastic "imposternators" at Mayberry events and they could not be finer, more welcoming folks. Isn't this fun and aren't we blessed? Thanks to the big man himself, Mr. Griffith, for making all of this possible. "Barney's gonna be in the choir? My Barney?" Telephones in Mayberry
I haven't seen this question brought up before so I wonder if anyone has any thoughts about the telephones used in Mayberry. I'm sure I'm telephone-knowledge challenged. I realize the party line enhanced the town's small-time feel (and party lines are to this day used in very rural areas, according to Wikipedia), but I can't figure out why the sheriff's office still had a candlestick phone and why the Taylor kitchen had a vintage wall phone with a mouthpiece in 1960 and beyond. I know Mayberry was rural, but our family had long had a rotary phone by 1960 and no party line. "Sarah, get me my house. She's fine." Don Knotts will best be remembered as Ralph Furley on Three's Company....What??
I so agree with Jess: it boggles the mind to think that Ralph Furley was Don Knotts greatest role. The article had to be written by someone not aware of or a fan of TAGS. Of course, Barney . . . I mean Don . . . was good in anything he did, but it was for being our thin-lipped deputy that he won five Emmys, after all. Now if that don't speak volumes about the actor of the man, I don't know what does. Greatest TV character ever, in my humble opinion. Mayberry Comes to Westminster, S.C.
Dewey asked for comments from anyone who attended Mayberry Comes to Westminster, S.C. last weekend. I did, and couldn't have enjoyed it more. Tom Rusk and his team did a wonderful job bringing our favorite hometown to S.C. The spirit was sweet; the locals were so welcoming; and, except for a brief shower, the weather cooperated beautifully. The storefronts on Main Street were so Mayberryesque; the local barber shop even removed their name, "King's Barber Shop," and replaced it with "Floyd's Barber Shop" just for the weekend. It made the perfect photo op--especially when you could get Floyd (Allan Newsome) to try to cut your hair. There were two parades (America at it's best!) featuring most of the wonderful "imposternators" and the local high school band playing "The Fishing Hole." There was even an election going on for the local sheriff. It was just America at its best. Plus, a beaver came to the festival. Now we all know that, why, every so often, a loaded goat will come to town for the day, but I ask you, where else but "Mayberry" would someone bring a beaver to a parade? I just wish it'd been a posstum that'd been hiding under a rock. You just gotta go next year. You'll love it. I gave it a good think under my bucket and believe it was Betty Lynn (our own Thel) who played Clifton Webb's daughter in Cheaper By the Dozen (an oldie but goodie). And as a double Mayberry connection, the movie co-starred Myrna Loy, whose picture was found in Wayne Deveraux's suit to be cleaned by Fred Goss, the finding of which became the subject of dinner chit-chat (I hate chit-chat) when he was dating Aunt Bee. Of course, nothing came of the romance because "the rule around here has GOT to be: no marryin' off unless it's of the absolutely overwhelming nature" (one of my favorite scenes in the whole series--the affection between Andy and Aunt Bee is never sweeter). Mayors and Things I learned from TAGS
RE: the Mayberry mayoral election, I'd have to cast my vote to reelect our little fat mayor, Mayor Pike. And two of the many, many life lessons I've learned from TAGS are: 1. I shouldn't pick my peaches before they're fuzzed up good. 2. As a Mama bird to two wonderful college-age boys that I'm just crazy about, I'm having to face what every Mama bird before me has known: “There’s that one other thing that she would’ve done . . . and that’s to let ‘em go . . . let ‘em be their own, be free. Mayberry Days
Even though I am a lifelong fan of the show, I had never been to Mayberry Days. Now I understand what all the excitement is about! We just returned from our first-ever Mayberry Days, and let me tell you, it was awesome! I can hardly wait for next year. The first person I saw was Allan Newsome (Floyd) who ushered us into the proclamation ceremony and it was fantastic! The outdoor worship service in the amphitheater Sunday was a really sweet time led by our new friends, Jan and Leroy McNees (whom we had met a few days earlier at LifeWay's Life Lessons From Mayberry event outside Asheville). We loved worshipping with the stars (Maggie Peterson Mancuso and Margaret Kerry, for example), the "impostenators," and the fans. Everybody we encountered--from the merchants to the visitors to the local police were kind and helpful and friendly. There really is a Mayberry spirit that comes over you and you just don't ever want to leave. Favorite girlfriend/favorite song
Helen was my least favorite of all Andy's girlfriends--she was always mad at him about something. Peggy was a close second favorite, but Ellie was my IT girl. Look at that smile--just as toothy! Loved, loved Ellie. I also loved her chemistry with Opie. Helen never seemed to lose her school teacher persona to develop a mothering-type relationship with Opie, as did Ellie, or even Peggy, who was so sweet to him. And as far as favorite songs, I think Ellie and Andy's "Away in a Manger" in "The Christmas Story" was just beautiful. Lovely harmony. I read that she was very nervous about singing that duet with him, so he had her rehearse a few times and one was so perfect that they filmed it and just used it. It was over before she knew it.
