Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 14, Issue 263 Subject: Lying

2013-09-13 Thread Dolly
I don't know how this topic relates to the Andy Griffith show but I feel I
must address it.
The topic is copied and pasted in the middle of this text. My commentary
follows

"

(" Ken,

You don't have to post this and maybe you better not, just thought you'd
find it interesting and will only increase your faith. Like it did mine.
That's a good thing right?

Earlier this year I started studying Leviticus in a group with an orthodox
rabbi. He claimed there was no such thing as a white lie.

Ok I could except that coming from the orthodox Judaism viewpoint. After
all

I was raised in NY where there were many conservative Jews around me.

But then when he insisted that God actually caused the holocaust, and not
just allowed it to happen, well that's when I left the group in dismay,
and
realized why so many Jews had given up that faith. Then I also recalled
that

the orthodox Jews are still waiting for their savior, realizing that
orthodox viewpoint.

Did some more review thinking related to what they taught me about Jesus
in

Catecism. It all came together once again and firmedup even more my faith,
in Jesus.

Patty+")

I sincerely doubt you were in a conversation with an orthodox Rabbi, it
sounds like perhaps some fringe Hasidim, if in fact that is what he said..
Conservative Jews are not Orthodox Jews, there is Hasidim, Ultra Orthodox ,
Orthodox, Conservative and Reform.

If you wren raised around Jews it sounds like perhaps you saw them but
didn't really know any on a personal level.
I also am amazed that you state"so many Jews have given up their faith".
What is your source for this? What are you statistics for this? Did you
know them personally?
I also don't understand why you would categorize this under the topic
"lying."

I sincerely enjoy this digest but enjoy it for the Andy Griffith show not
for religious meanderings.

Again I can not figure out how this relates to the Andy Griffith show but
felt I must respond. I will not address it again.

Sincerely
Dolly

I found Dan's comments very interesting. I don't wish to offend anyone who
likes Jerry Van Dyke. I'm sure he is a fine person. I just never cared for
his comedy. I was surprised at knowing he was offered a permanent role. My
feelings are that the producers made a mistake in not offering one to
Bernard Fox. I think he could have added some extra oomph after Don Knotts
left. He went on to create a greatly needed character in Bewitched. I still
laugh out loud whenever I see him perform.

"All the recent talk about a silent auction ( which we had at our church
last Sunday ) gave me an absolutely brilliant idea. Why don't we declare
a National Mr. Schwamp Day?
We could have the big event in Mt. Airy at Christmas time. We could open
the event by singing Silent Night. We could have an all day Silent
Auction. We could invite Byounce and she could lip sync "Silence is
Golden". "The Silence" is a song by British recording artist Alexandra
Burke from her debut studio album Overcome, so perhaps we could invite her
to attend and perform. There could also be a charades game ( with no
talking) competition for the adults while the children watch a program with
mimes. Newspapers and benches would be provided for those who didn't want
to participate in various activities. The closing event could be the
showing of the movie "All Quiet on the Western Front". All in all I would
say it would be a nice quiet event. Cookies and Hawaiian Punch would be
served. That's the new kind of punch that came out since President Obama
was elected.
Now that I came up with the idea, it is up to someone else to get it all
organized"

I spent a few growing up years in the Kentucky area and recall the term
cutting but also recall the term picking in Gainesville Georgia early 60's
and recall seeing the barns with tobacco drying in that manner. A few years
ago (about) I saw some still like that going through Tennessee. We were
behind a tobacco farmer with leaves on his truck on the highway and I wanted
to follow to see where he was going and sure 'nuf there was the barn and
poles.

Re: rspe...@nc.rr.com
"While I understand the term in Kentucky is cutting tobacco, because I think
with burley tobacco the entire stalk is cut - in North Carolina tobacco
(flue-cured, not burley) is "picked" or "cropped" a few leaves each week
over a four to five week season in the summer as the leaves partially "cure"
on the stalk - in the old days the picked or cropped leaves were tied to
sticks and hung in barns on "tier" poles because they were at different
levels in the barn - those of us who had to climb to the top of the barn to
hang the sticks of tobacco referred to them as "tear" poles because it would
be so hot at the top of the barn our eyes would run water "

Yup I saw that too, and L.O.V.E. that show

Your comments on repeating story lines Ken I think really adds to the
timeless of some skits/ideas. This shows Mayberry RFD was searching and
went back to TAGS for high quality material. This was not one episode but
you gave evidence of multiple story lines, once again outlining the talent

Debbie your remark "group of actors that they used regularly in all the

appears that there were actors who took parts in whatever shows they could
get. Must have been a tough way to make a living but now we get to enjoy

Now your concept is bugging me and I'm going to have to research and see if

Chuck; I found the short wave questions interesting because I'm a big short
wave fan. They had them back in the 60's, Daddy had one. I had one in the
late 70's which had to have an antenna attached outside so they obviously
took some "artistic license" with that episode. However now you have me on a
quest to find out and to get another shortwave. I found the MiG-25 (with
battery)was designed in the very early 60's, and first flew in 1964, so if
that episode was post 64 it might have been real. Now I want another
shortwave.

which our entertainment industry has sunk.
Even in dated segments of TAGS of which there area few, they are still
entertaining. Andy Griffith was extremely well written, all of the elements
of the Greek tragedies, Andy Griffith, I love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke. All
of these shows hold relevance today and each has some dated segments. Those
segments do not take away the over all value of the shows which are a
reflection on an America of our past and in many ways a better one than what
we have today. Reflection on our past is extremely important for without a

I read with equal interest your comment on Disney and vampires. This is not

dangerous trends for youth who may be unable to differentiate between

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 6, Issue 208 Cosby vs Little House vs Waltoms vs TAGS

2006-07-17 Thread Dolly
I may be in the minority here but I will take a chance on this. I feel the
Cosby show does not not rate on the same level as Andy Griffith. This show
portrayed elitism and not a little bit of arrogance.

Little House on the Prairie & the Waltons, I do not wish to offend anyone
and I hope you will understand my premise, were a little to syrupy and not
based in reality. I viewed them as a romantic notion of what we would like
to have imagined life to be but was not.

Andy Griffith was realistic, no arrogance, no elitism, no portrayal of any
superiority, no syrupy deviating from reality.

I think we have seen one of a kind in television history.

I feel that there is nothing yet I have seen that can compare. I am
personally a big Sienfeld fan but in no way do I compare this show on any
level to the honesty of Andy Griffith. I also loved the Cosby show but
felt it was not realistic.

I am not a big Kenny Rogers fan in regard to his voice however I have great
respect for his humility. On a Larry King interview he stated that he
was not a star. There were very few stars in a life time. He equated
Elvis to be star and further stated that there is not an Elvis in every
life time He them mentioned Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. He stated also
that other entertainers, if they were lucky could stay on top for 3 years
and then try to keep their name alive.

I feel Andy Griffith is in this not always in a life time star category.

I appreciate everyone's opinions and I hope you accept mine in the same
manner.
Respectfully
Dolly

Thelma Lou's Hair WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 6, Issue 177

2006-06-16 Thread Dolly
Wasn't this the one where Barney tried to get Andy "a mother for Opie" with a
wide variety of eligible Mayberry girls?
Now you will have me wondering.

"There is a debate going at the TVLand message board about an episode where
Thel is seen with her hair down. No one seems to know what episode that was.
Can anyone help out? Thanks. "

Vol 6, Issue 174 Andy's hat or lac of

2006-06-11 Thread Dolly
Wasn't Andy's not wearing a hat simply due to the desired image of Andy as more
laid back and casual? I thought this concept was due to
a mutual Andy and Don decision to project Barney as over Zealous with Andy
being calm and in charge. In a Larry King Interview Andy mentioned that early
on he realized Don was the funny one and he was the straight man.

I like the earlier episodes much better for I felt they cast Andy as to
straight following Don's departurealthough I like Andy Griffith whatever
role he plays and what ever he does.

Dolly

" don't believe Andy liked wearing hats because he had big ears that stuck
out and a hat would draw attention to them. When he did wear them he looked
a little goofy."

Vol 6, Issue 173 bulliten board issue

2006-06-10 Thread Dolly
"The line "Who's been messing with the bulletin board" came from the episode
where Warren came into the picture. If memory serves me I recall Warren being
exasperated because the bulletin board was not "regulation." When Barney
discovered that Someone had organized the F.B.I. postings he threw a fit and
said the now famous squeal "Who's been messing with the bulletin board?" I
almost sure about this. Correct me if I am wrong."

Please equally correct me if I am wrong, however I believe Warren came into
the picture following Barney's move to Raleigh. I recall the bulletin board
issue as emanating form a sheriff's intern: one Barney feared would take over
his job, thus Barney selling vacuum cleaners on the street ending the episode
with the "Green River Ordinance."

favopurite songs and Andy griflriends w/jealousy digest 170/171

2006-06-08 Thread Dolly
Does anyone recall Andy and his then (one of his first girlfriends) Peggy the
nurse sitting on the front porch and singing "Down In The Valley? This was one
of my very favourites.

I agree with the posting regarding Helen's jealousy. But then..Andy also "got"
jealous frequently, with his nurse girlfriend Peggy when her friend came to
visit, "the hungry buzzard" and with Ellie, my favourite Andy girlfriend (she
took a back seat to no one not even the city council) "when the new doctor was
in town."
