I happened to watch some of the old Western movie "Horizons West" (1960) last night. Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) played the mother of a young Rock Hudson! This is interesting because in the TAGS episode "Mayberry Goes Hollywood" Andy asks Aunt Bee if Rock Hudson was her favorite actor. Of course she agreed since she once played his mother! In addition to Aunt Bee, Nurse Mary Simpson (Julie Adams) played the wife of the bad guy (Raymond Burr / a.k.a. Perry Mason). A young Dennis Weaver (Chester on "Gunsmoke") was also on it. Recently though, I did see the talk about Andy, Barney ,and Aunt Bee going to the local dump at night to search for some copies of Opie's newspaper. The main focus seemed to be on how Aunt Bee got to the dump. Well, I remember that in at least one or two episodes Aunt Bee had a car. To - Deborah re: Aunt Bee
You did some impressive detective work down there in Siler City. Just wondering if some of the things I have read about Frances Bavier a/k/a Aunt Bee were true: that at first she really enjoyed her time there, and I think even was the Grand Marshall of a big parade. But eventually, she stopped going to the grocery store and other places because she got tired of people constantly make joking comments about her role in TAGS, like asking her if she made any pickles lately, etc. Then, people started going to her house, peeking in the windows, etc. to the point where she shut herself off in the back of the house with her cats and closed all the curtains. She totally stopped going out and had everything delivered. When Andy and Ron Howard went to visit her once, she did not let them in and basically closed the door on them. If it's true that this is how she spent her last years, it's pretty sad. Joe from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Re: Why Aunt Bee left Mayberry RFD
> Does anyone know why Frances Bavier left Mayberry RFD after the second season? You'll most likely get several versions, this is just one from a Google Search I've driven past her multistory, red brick home in Siler City, and visited her grave. Siler City is peaceful, serene, and very small town sized. ~~~ Born in Manhattan, Bavier was a city girl. She went to college uptown at Columbia University. She began her showbiz career on vaudeville and Broadway stages. But something about the quiet life in the Carolinas appealed to her private personality. In 1972, not long after her final appearance on Mayberry R.F.D., Bavier left Hollywood and purchased a home in Siler City, North Carolina. Despite the fact that her TV shows were filmed in California, Bavier noted, "I fell in love with North Carolina, all the pretty roads and the trees." Siler City sits about 90 miles southeast of Mt. Airy, North Carolina, Griffith's hometown and the real-life inspiration for Mayberry. At the time, both little burgs were about the same size, with about 5,000–7,000 residents. It's easy to assume that life in Siler City was akin to living in Mayberry. Bavier lived the rest of her quiet life in the town, until she passed away in 1989. She was buried in Siler City. Chiseled on her tombstone, under the name "Aunt Bee," the inscription declares, "To live in the hearts of those left behind is not to die." ~~ Harriet, the chicken thief ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Now of course Aunt Bee bought the Chinese restaurant, but we never actually see her eating there. Andy talked about taking her and Opie to the Chinese restaurant in Mt. Pilot but we never saw them there. Now as I recall from my own time in the sixties, eating out was a very special treat, and I actually do not recall ever going out to eat in a restaurant with my family. In high school we would go to some of the cafes for cokes and French fries, but never for a full meal with my family. To the naysayers who think Opie was the one who operated it, yes he did the pulling but when they leave the house, Aunt Bee gives it a push. There is no evidence that Aunt Bee ever operated any type of truck. True, we do see a pickup truck outside Andy's house in The New Housekeeper and many people have jumped to the conclusion that it was Andy's truck, but we are never told whose truck it is. Maybe Andy only borrowed it. Speaking of that episode, how did she ever get to the house in the first place? Presumably she came to Mayberry via train or bus, but If so why didn't Andy pick her up at the depot or bus stop? She just appeared at the front door. >>>Here are some questions that might "drive" you crazy! Aunt Bee operated her car, an airplane, and a tandem bike. I'm still working on what Andy drove. I can't remember four different cars. Of course, he drove the squad car. I'm thinking he drove Aunt Bee's car to Raleigh that time he met up with the heavyset, grim, 40-ish lawyer lady. That would be two. But right now I can only think of two other vehicles, and they were pick-up trucks--Goober's truck and the one he was going to take Aunt Bee in at the end of the very first episode. I recently viewed the episode "Aunt Bee the Warden".Otis tries to escape "the rock" by hiding in the laundry service truck for a quick getaway.Aunt Bee has the driver open the back door of the truck and she commences to beat the bags of laundry in search of Otis. Wow Paul, I never thought about checking the model of the car.you're good.especially when you can't see the new model very well. I also noticed Andy's belt position keeps changing. When he gets Otis in the house the cases are in the back again. Then when he goes to the kitchen he belt is off (understandable). But when he leaves for the office the next morning.no gun belt. Hopefully he didn't leave it on the couch for Opie to find. I had actually not noticed the differences in the accessories on Andy's belt. Good catch, but that's not the one I'm thinking of. OK, I'll just go ahead and tell you. Probably everyone knows that the Mayberry squad car was always the latest model Ford sedan. At some point in the middle of each season, the one-year-old car was replaced with a brand new one. In the opening shot of Aunt Bee the Warden, we see the 1961 squad car roaring down the road with the siren wailing. Seconds later, when the car pulls up in front of the courthouse (with the siren still going), it's the 1962 model! Maybe Andy got a call on the radio that his new car was ready, and he stopped off on the way to pick it up. Doesn't seem very likely, does it? I am reading one of the Cackleclub Mystery Books by Laura Childs. It takes place in a small town and on a cold winter night someone is murdered. The perpetrator strung a piece of wire across a snowmobile trail and beheaded a leading citizen. According to the book Inside Mayberry (page 47) by Dan Harrison and Bill Habeeb, the portrait of the young Beatrice Taylor can be seen in the following episodes: A: near the front door in The New Housekeeper, when Aunt Bee enters the Taylor home for the very first time 2: in the same spot, a few episodes later, in A Feud is a Feud c: on the back wall over the side table in Andy the Marriage Counselor, when Cliff comes to Andy's house after the card game IV: in Andy and Opie, Housekeepers, Aunt Bee stands next to it when she prepares to leave for the bus Five: over Henry Wheeler's shoulder by the front door in Aunt Bee's Brief Encounter I have not doubled-checked these, and I'm pretty sure the picture pops up in other episodes besides these five (seems like it's seen in Opie's room once or twice) but this should enable anybody with access to Netflix or the DVDs to spot it. Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee?
Aunt Bee had a number of "brief encounters" during her time on TAGS. I often thought a great story line when she decided to leave the show was for her to finally get married and find true happiness in a home of her home. In Mayberry RFD she did get engaged to the cruise ship captain and they even had the wedding rehearsal before they changed their minds. So I am wondering which of these "suiters" would you have liked to see Aunt Bee marry if there ever were such an episode. She did spend time with each of these familiar gentlemen. Mr. Wheeler, the traveling bug sprayer? Fred Goss ? Roger Hanover ? Briscoe Darling ? Professor St. John? John Canfield, the retired Congressman? To Bee or not to Bea - yet another time :-)
Happy New Year, everybody! Google is a fun tool to use. Aunt Bee laughing
Aunt Bee enjoys a good laugh in The Rumor, when Barney tells her he dropped a filing cabinet drawer in an attempt to keep Andy busy at the courthouse. Why J through Z would all be in one drawer of a four-drawer cabinet, and the TOPMOST drawer to boot, is a mystery. Probably the only time she really breaks up laughing, to the point that she can barely speak, comes near the end of Howard the Comedian. She is telling a story about the time she was down in the cellar when the minister stopped by.
