Aunt Bee and Rock Hudson

2023-11-29 Thread Dennis Beal
I happened to watch some of the old Western movie "Horizons West" (1960) last
night. Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) played the mother of a young Rock Hudson! This
is interesting because in the TAGS episode "Mayberry Goes Hollywood" Andy asks
Aunt Bee if Rock Hudson was her favorite actor. Of course she agreed since she
once played his mother!

In addition to Aunt Bee, Nurse Mary Simpson (Julie Adams) played the wife of
the bad guy (Raymond Burr / a.k.a. Perry Mason). A young Dennis Weaver (Chester
on "Gunsmoke") was also on it. And you know what? He didn't walk like Chester.
I'm sure Goober was disappointed.

Regarding Thelma Anderson's question about whether Aunt Bee had domestic
help in her big house.

I don't think it was domestic, but I believe she did have that British
fellow helping out for a while.

I think the price on the house is a little high unless it includes the
following ameninies:

A. The mosaic picture that Otis made (preferably over the mantle and
not in the closet)

2.An apparatus for stretching hooked up on the closet shelf that also
includes an unopened bottle of Col. Harvey's elixir

C.A spinach garden and imaginary horse named "Blackie" in the backyard

leaves with the tray of food for the courthouse. After she leaves, Andy
starts to tell a Jack Story to Opie. Opie loses interest, so Andy tells
him to go up to bed. Andy reminds him not to stay up and look at his

Aunt Bee Goes To The Dump

2020-09-22 Thread John Graham
I haven't followed the Digest too much recently. My wife is disabled and
I'm her caregiver and time just get away from me. Recently though, I did
see the talk about Andy, Barney ,and Aunt Bee going to the local dump at
night to search for some copies of Opie's newspaper. The main focus seemed
to be on how Aunt Bee got to the dump. Well, I remember that in at least
one or two episodes Aunt Bee had a car. Ford was the car of choice on the
show and Aunt Bee's car I believe was a Ford Victoria and I think that the
year model was sometime in the late 50's. I imagine, that was what she
drove to the dump.

 Thanks and I'm going to try to get

You did some impressive detective work down there in Siler City. Just
wondering if some of the things I have read about Frances Bavier a/k/a Aunt
Bee were true: that at first she really enjoyed her time there, and I
think even was the Grand Marshall of a big parade. But eventually, she
stopped going to the grocery store and other places because she got tired
of people constantly make joking comments about her role in TAGS, like
asking her if she made any pickles lately, etc.

Then, people started going to her house, peeking in the windows, etc. to
the point where she shut herself off in the back of the house with her cats
and closed all the curtains. She totally stopped going out and had
everything delivered. When Andy and Ron Howard went to visit her once, she
did not let them in and basically closed the door on them.

If it's true that this is how she spent her last years, it's pretty sad.

Why Aunt Bee left Mayberry

I also visited Siler City, Aunt Bee's house and grave! I became friends with

squares they sold when the house was bought after her death. This intrigued me
so I turned my detective mode on. I visited the police station and the funeral

Re: Why Aunt Bee left Mayberry RFD

2020-05-09 Thread Harriet Browder
> Does anyone know why Frances Bavier left Mayberry RFD after the second season?

You'll most likely get several versions, this is just one from a Google
Search I've driven past her multistory, red brick home in Siler City, and
visited her grave. Siler City is peaceful, serene, and very small town sized.

~~~
Born in Manhattan, Bavier was a city girl. She went to college uptown at
Columbia University. She began her showbiz career on vaudeville and Broadway
stages. But something about the quiet life in the Carolinas appealed to her
private personality.
In 1972, not long after her final appearance on Mayberry R.F.D., Bavier left
Hollywood and purchased a home in Siler City, North Carolina. Despite the fact
that her TV shows were filmed in California, Bavier noted, "I fell in love with
North Carolina, all the pretty roads and the trees."
Siler City sits about 90 miles southeast of Mt. Airy, North Carolina,
Griffith's hometown and the real-life inspiration for Mayberry. At the time,
both little burgs were about the same size, with about 5,000–7,000 residents.
It's easy to assume that life in Siler City was akin to living in Mayberry.
Bavier lived the rest of her quiet life in the town, until she passed away in
1989. She was buried in Siler City. Chiseled on her tombstone, under the name
"Aunt Bee," the inscription declares, "To live in the hearts of those left
behind is not to die."
I have just begun reading an English mystery called *Brat Farrar* by
Josephine Tey.
The very first two words of the book are "Aunt Bee".
It is about Aunt Bee who travels to the English midlands to care for her
nephew, three sisters, and twin brothers.
Maybe it will turn out to be an English Mayberry story.
Who knows, maybe Malcolm will even show up.
Can't wait to get it read.
Aunt Bee Eating Out
2014-06-29 Thread Ken Anderson
While eating in a restaurant on Friday night I got to thinking about when
Aunt Bee was shown eating in a restaurant.  I can only come up with three
times.  One was when she and Emma were eating lunch in the drugstore when
the shoe salesman came in.  Then she was seen eating spaghetti with
Professor St. John.  The only other time I recall her eating in a
restaurant was when Goober took them out to the fancy restaurant in
Raleigh. Now of course Aunt Bee bought the Chinese restaurant, but we never
actually see her eating there.  Andy talked about taking her and Opie to
the Chinese restaurant in Mt. Pilot but we never saw them there.
Now as I recall from my own time in the sixties, eating out was a very
special treat, and I actually do not recall ever going out to eat in a
restaurant with my family.  In high school we would go to some of the cafes
for cokes and French fries, but never for a full meal with my family.
Any thoughts???
There is no evidence that Aunt Bee ever operated any type of truck. True, we do
see a pickup truck outside Andy's house in The New Housekeeper and many people
have jumped to the conclusion that it was Andy's truck, but we are never told
whose truck it is. Maybe Andy only borrowed it. Speaking of that episode, how
did she ever get to the house in the first place? Presumably she came to
Mayberry via train or bus, but If so why didn't Andy pick her up at the depot
or bus stop? She just appeared at the front door.
Let's see--Barney drove the squad car, the car he bought from Mrs. Lesch,
Floyd's car, and Malloy's car (while pulling the trailer behind it).  Aunt Bee
operated her car, an airplane, and a tandem bike.  I'm still working on what
Andy drove.  I can't remember four different cars.  Of course, he drove the
squad car.  I'm thinking he drove Aunt Bee's car to Raleigh that time he met up
with the heavyset, grim, 40-ish lawyer lady.  That would be two.  But right now
I can only think of two other vehicles, and they were pick-up trucks--Goober's
truck and the one he was going to take Aunt Bee in at the end of the very first
episode.
I also noticed Andy's belt position keeps changing. When he gets Otis in the
house the cases are in the back again. Then when he goes to the kitchen he
belt is off (understandable). But when he leaves for the office the next
morning.no gun belt. Hopefully he didn't leave it on the couch for Opie to
find. Obviously his desire to be the sheriff without a gun has led him to
forgetfulness when actually packing one :-)
I had actually not noticed the differences in the accessories on Andy's belt.
Good catch, but that's not the one I'm thinking of.
OK, I'll just go ahead and tell you. Probably everyone knows that the Mayberry
squad car was always the latest model Ford sedan.  At some point in the middle
of each season, the one-year-old car was replaced with a brand new one.
In the opening shot of Aunt Bee the Warden, we see the 1961 squad car roaring
down the road with the siren wailing. Seconds later, when the car pulls up in
front of the courthouse (with the siren still going), it's the 1962 model!
Maybe Andy got a call on the radio that his new car was ready, and he stopped
off on the way to pick it up. Doesn't seem very likely, does it?
different from what you have in mind.  During the opening scene when the squad
and the one in the passenger side of the front seat seems to be wearing a cap
like Barney's.  However, Barney was at the courthouse when Andy drove up, and
with the four Gordon boys, there should have been five people in the squad car.
Could Aunt Bee be a Suspect?
2013-04-26 Thread Ken Anderson
I am reading one of the Cackleclub Mystery Books by Laura Childs.  It takes
place in a small town and on a cold winter night someone is murdered.  The
perpetrator strung a piece of wire across a snowmobile trail and beheaded a
leading citizen.  Police Chief Doogie is trying to figure out where someone
would get the idea to kill someone using this method.  Now I sure hope old
Doogie is not a TAGS fan; otherwise he may have seen "Barney's Sidecar" and
he could remember Aunt Bee suggesting that they do the very same thing to
Barney.  She could end up being the number one suspect.  I will keep you
Picture of Aunt Bee in her younger days
2013-03-30 Thread Paul Mulik
According to the book Inside Mayberry (page 47) by Dan Harrison and Bill
Habeeb, the portrait of the young Beatrice Taylor can be seen in the following
episodes:
A: near the front door in The New Housekeeper, when Aunt Bee enters the Taylor
home for the very first time
2: in the same spot, a few episodes later, in A Feud is a Feud
c: on the back wall over the side table in Andy the Marriage Counselor, when
Cliff comes to Andy's house after the card game
IV: in Andy and Opie, Housekeepers, Aunt Bee stands next to it when she
prepares to leave for the bus
Five: over Henry Wheeler's shoulder by the front door in Aunt Bee's Brief
Encounter
I have not doubled-checked these, and I'm pretty sure the picture pops up in
other episodes besides these five (seems like it's seen in Opie's room once or
twice) but this should enable anybody with access to Netflix or the DVDs to
spot it.
Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee?
2013-02-04 Thread Ken Anderson
Aunt Bee had a number of "brief encounters" during her time on TAGS.  I
often thought a great story line when she decided to leave the show was for
her to finally get married and find true happiness in a home of her home.
In Mayberry RFD she did get engaged to the cruise ship captain and they
even had the wedding rehearsal before they changed their minds. So I am
wondering which of these "suiters" would you have liked to see Aunt Bee
marry if there ever were such an episode.  She did spend time with each of
these familiar gentlemen.
Mr. Wheeler, the traveling bug sprayer?
Fred Goss ?
Roger Hanover ?
Briscoe Darling ?
Professor St. John?
John Canfield, the retired Congressman?
Reverend Leighten, the new minister Aunt Bee impressed with her wig
If you would like to email me your choice I will tabulate the votes and
post them in about a week's time.
2013-01-03 Thread Ken Anderson
I think to simply the ongoing debate of the spelling of Aunt Bee or Aunt
Bea, she should have been Aunt B.  I was always Mr. A. when I taught.
 Parents still call me that when they see me.  Just glad my name isn't
Peterson like my wife's maiden name.
== How do you spell Aunt Bee's name? ==
The correct spelling is B-E-E. The spelling can be seen on a couple of
episodes, color ones. When she had the Chinese Restaurant ("Aunt Bee's
Restaurant" episode #209) and when she ran for council ("Politics
Begin at Home" episode #200). The spelling can also be seen on the
closing credits of almost every episode of TAGS.
Sure, Bee is short for Beatrice but she still spelled her name B-E-E.
I guess if you can get Bill from the name William or Jim from James,
you can get Bee from Beatrice. Bee is listed as a short form of
Beatrice in "The Name Book" which list names for expecting parents.
Forget the right or wrong of it, it is not the way they wanted Aunt Bee's name
spelled and I think the best thing we can do is to honor the precedent the
script writers created. When I've corrected Digest posters about the incorrect
spelling in the past I've taken a lot of "Rudes" for it so I don't even mention
it anymore. If you want to be wrong, go ahead, it's no skin off my back.
Irritatin', ain't it
I've dealt with people spelling my name wrong all my life. No one can name one
famous Harriet spelled with two Ts but for some reason everyone wants to add
one. I don't like it but I live with it.
Or as the famous line goesI before E except after C and E after E in Aunt
Bee (thanks Paul Mulik, and that's not Mulick). Got it? Gee, I hope you do
because I fully believe we all have steel trap minds.
To Bee or not to Bea - yet another time :-)
2013-01-02 Thread bcbow
Happy New Year, everybody!
Google is a fun tool to use. If you google "Andy Griffith Show cast" you'll
find numerous references to "Aunt Bee," who was indeed named Beatrice (Taylor),
but spelled her nickname "Bee." Apparently, the character name "Aunt Bee" can
be seen on screen in a couple of episodes. From the Andy Griffith Show Rerun
Watchers Club :
Love that last point. How about Chuck from Charles, Bob from Robert, Dick from
Richard this list could go on and on. And just think of the many ways both
given and sur names may be spelled, and they're all correct because because
that's how they're spelled on the birth certificates. Johnson, Jonson, Jonsson,
Johnsson, anyone? Christine, Christina, Kristina, Kristine, etc. etc. One of my
students was named Destayne - pronounced "destiny."
Lastly, I think that Frances E. Bavier, who played the character Aunt Bee,
should have the last word regarding the spelling. She had "Aunt Bee" inscribed
on her grave stone below her name. And Ms. Bavier ought to have known.
You can see it here, or just google...
Aunt Bee laughing
2012-11-19 Thread Paul Mulik
Aunt Bee enjoys a good laugh in The Rumor, when Barney tells her he dropped a
filing cabinet drawer in an attempt to keep Andy busy at the courthouse. Why J
through Z would all be in one drawer of a four-drawer cabinet, and the TOPMOST
drawer to boot, is a mystery.
Probably the only time she really breaks up laughing, to the point that she can
barely speak, comes near the end of Howard the Comedian. She is telling a story
about the time she was down in the cellar when the minister stopped by.  Why
this is supposed to be hilariously funny, I do not know, unless maybe the good
folks of Mayberry routinely keep liquor in their cellars.  Anybody have another
explanation?
Aunt Bee sighting
2012-11-14 Thread dek697
I'm not a trained noticer like many of the members here so I'll bet this has
been mentioned before. I was watching the first ever episode of Alfred
Hitchcock presents and the next door neighbor of the protagonist was none other
Aunt Bea!! even though it was a Hitchcock show she was still her helpful
cheerful self. she even offered to go grocery shopping for her new neighbors!
Anyone else ever see this episode?
My thought on the biggest contention between Aunt Bee and Andy was when she ran
for city council and Andy was backing Howard. Also when she wanted to learn to
drive, Andy was fully against it but they didn't fight about it.
I'm reviewing an environmental document for work and there is a reference to
"Aunt Bee's Cleaners and Laundry" within the project area here in Nashville. It
is no longer in business, but I did a quick search online and see there is an
Aunt Bee's Laundrette in Louisville KY.
Aunt Bee vs Rose
Hello All!
I was watching the episode where Rose ran off and got married and Aunt Bee came
to live with them.
Of course I've seen this episode many times, but it never fails to tug at my
heart strings.
"She doesn't know how to do anything...like fish, or play ball, or hunt frogs.
She needs me." Good stuff.
Aunt Bee and Opie
2012-07-03 Thread Steve Simers
Ken,
 In "The New Housekeeper" episode, Aunt Bee is leaving and Opie runs outside
and is wanting Aunt Bee to stay, He says she doesn't know how to do anything,
play baseball, catch fish, or hunt frogs...the he says "She needs me" and he
falls into her arms and they hug each other.  I think it was a real embrace.
That one just kinda stands out to me.
Also, after hearing the sad news that Andy has passed away, I just want to say,
"Thank You" to Andy for his work that touched so many lives in such a positive
way. So many of us have been blessed by his life. And not just Andy, but All of
those involved with TAGS.  They all brought us so much joy and laughter and
taught us so much about how to live life and how to treat others. And they
continue to do so even though they are not all still with us.   There are just
not enough appropriate words to describe what we feel. Andy, we will forever be
grateful to you!
And to all of us that love TAGS so much, I challenge each of us to continue to
try to live a "Mayberry" kind of life.  Our families need and deserve that. Our
country ,as a whole, needs it more than ever right now! We often talk about how
different things are now than when we grew up. Well, we can make a difference
in our way of life. We can all try to make our communities more "Mayberry
Like".  I'm sure Andy would approve.
Aunt Bee and Opie
2012-07-02 Thread Ken Anderson
I have a question regarding Aunt Bee and Opie. Were there ever any scenes
that actually showed Aunt Bee giving Opie a kiss or tucking him in bed at
night or anything like that.  I know she hugged him and patted him on his
behind when he gave her the salt and pepper shakers, but I just can't
recall any scenes that showed any really embracing between the two.  There
must have been some, I would think.  I think I recall him giving Aunt Bee a
hug while saying good night.  Can anyone help me out on this.  I would like
to capture a few screen shots for my presentations.
