{Spam?} Floyd and Mr. Sims on the Twilight Zone

2022-12-22 Thread Joe
I just watched the humorous episode "Hocus Pocus and Frisby" and there was
Howard McNear and Dabbs Greer, who made 4 TAGS appearances. This "Twilight
Zone" episode was filmed in 1962, when Howard was also appearing in TAGS.
They both were townspeople who got together in the general store/gas
station, just like the older guys in TAGS would gather at Floyd's barber
shop. Great character actors.

Growing up in the 60s in NC, I always called aunts, uncles, parents' friends,
etc by their first names. I still do. It may have been because I was the first
grandchild (on both sides) and never heard anyone call them "Aunt" or "Uncle."
I don't think any of them ever took offense, and there was certainly no

Radio Gunsmoke - Floyd and Mayor Stoner

Speaking of Gunsmoke, on the radio version of Gunsmoke, which aired from

Was Mayberry really Dodge City, or vise versa?

I’m often asked how I got started as a “Floyd the barber” tribute. In this
episode of Two Chairs No Waiting you’ll hear the story of how it all began.
From The Mayberry Deputy, David Browning, asking me to come to talk to
folks using a Floyd voice to the very first time I ever tried to do Floyd
in public, you’ll get the whole story.

*Bonus:* This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy

I thought the WBMUTBB Chapter folks might enjoy this one. The VIDEO

Re: Question about Floyd and "Punch in the Nose"

2017-05-08 Thread Janet Anderson

>>>Here's my question in "The case of a punch in the nose" who is the barber
>>>coming out of Floyds shop as Barney and Goober are pulling up to the court
>>>house?<<<

If you look carefully (and I could post a screen shot, but I can't do that on
the digest), that man is apparently a customer of Floyd. He is not wearing the
barber coat that Floyd wears. Instead, it appears to be a cape he is wearing.
We assume he hopped out of the barber chair in the middle of a haircut to check
out the excitement in the street. The man himself is a background actor
(extra) who can be seen in other episodes.

Now, there are instances where someone else (an extra) is playing Floyd in a
long shot. I forget which episode this is, but one of the extras, a guy who
wears glasses, can be seen briefly through the barber shop window posing as
Floyd. This was done so as to avoid the trouble of using the regular actor as
"background scenery," since most people would never realize it was someone else
anyway. In that episode, the extra was wearing Floyd's barber coat and was
standing over someone in the chair. So the situations were different.

Hope this explanation helps.

Floyd actors

Please stop me if this has been covered before, but I thought I saw a

our beloved Howard Mcnair, nor the first Floyd (who's name escapes me) in the
the episode where Opie was sweet on Thelma Lou, did anyone else notice if there
were more than two actors who've portrayed Floyd?

The first actor to play Floyd was Walter Baldwin, but he couldn't cut it and
was replaced by the real Floyd, Howard McNear after just one episode. There
wasn't a third actor to play Floyd, but a stand-in (double) was used for Howard
McNear in many scenes, such as when the character was required to drive a car.
It's common practice for every major character in most shows to have a
stand-in, so the stars can take a break in scenes, for example, where their
back is to the camera for an entire scene.

Remembering that Howard McNear portrayed Doc Adams on the radio version of

Car drive by Floyd

Anyway, I was visiting with my parents the other day when this episode happened

Floyd....the Plumber?

2012-03-23 Thread Hughes, Clyde L. (HSC)
Hi Gang,
I've been enjoying the broadcasts of the great Burns and Allen Show lately,
and I've been delighted to see Howard McNear appear on several of them. In
several episodes, he has a recurring role of Mr. Jansen, a widowed plumber with
four teenage daughters. One episode in particular, The Plumber's Union
(1957), is strikingly similar to another episode...Floyd, the Gay Deceiver,
in that some of the facts about Mr. Jansen are 'stretched' in order to attract
a female. The only thing that Mr. Jansen didn't do was shout Miserable,
deceitful WRETCH!'.

Here's a plot synopsis from imdb:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0587142/plotsummary

Gracie finds out that Mr. Jansen, a widowed plumber with four teenage
daughters, is looking for a wife. She volunteers to help out by placing an ad
for him in the Personals column, but in her zeal to help Mr. Jansen, she

Gracie had nipped (in the bud) some daffodils, and she was turning herself in

could have managed the shop and hung around the shop, and the bench out front.
I think that would have made a better statement to handicapped people
everywhere, but in those days, the handicapped were more hidden than they are
today. I mean, it isn't like everyone did not know Floyd was handicapped, the
producers of the show were not fooling anyone.

I just saw Howard McN on an old episode (like there's any other kind) of Peter

Bert and Floyd Podcast

2010-07-15 Thread Ken Anderson
I watched Allan's podcast last night and it was a true delight. It was the
first time I had seen Floyd at work and he was on the top of his game. And
then to have Bert stop in was an extra special treat. Those two would make
a great team in business. If you haven't watched the video podcast I
strongly recommend it. Now I know why Allan is such a popular guy at all
the Mayberry events. Only one suggestion. They were so funny I think they
should change their name to Bert and Squirt.

Two Chairs No Waiting 92: Floyd Bert – Bu siness Partners?

2010-07-14 Thread Allan Newsome

Two Chairs No Waiting 92: Floyd Bert – Business Partners?

To celebrate episode 92 we thought it would be nice to have Floyd host
the show. To paraphrase Floyd, “Ninety-two, people always talking about
podcast but nobody does anything about it.”

Floyd shares a flashback with us of a time when Bert Miller dropped by
the barber shop with a business idea for Floyd. Enjoy this flashback and
we hope you’ll let it take you to the land of rhythm and pleasure or at
least to a scene in Mayberry that we never witnessed but now we get to hear.

Thanks to Joe Gritton (a.k.a. “The Untrained Voice”) for writing our
“flashback!” This episode would NOT have happened without him. Joe also
wrote the flashback in episode #17 so check that out too.

single camera and Floyd

2010-02-09 Thread Hughes, Clyde L. (HSC)
Allan, thanks for the reminders - there's not another place like this one. :)

Yes, I also try not to think too much about the 'behind-the-scenes' work that
goes
into the production of TAGS, as it interferes with the relaxing parts. As a
side
note, wouldn't it be interesting to see those bits of film when the actors
weren't
speaking their lines? It makes you wonder if (or how many times) Andy 'busted
up'
when Don did his thing.
Now Barney's camera took a piece of string. You just had to have that piece of
string to get the criminals on film! :-)
Howard McNear was a professional always. I agree that he did a superb job,
despite
what setbacks he suffered. He was a constant inspiration. From the 'banana
scene' onwards. There are numerous favorite Floyd scenes of mine, including
the
opening scene on the bench from the episode in which Andy's 'cousin' Gloria
visits.
While this episode isn't on my top list, this scene with Floyd and Andy makes
the
entire story for me. Floyd relates a story to Andy about a gal he knew 'way
back'
whose hair came out orange. That has me rolling on the floor all the time!
Another one was The High School Musical in which Floyd does Gilbert and
Sullivan -
Andy seems to have had enough of Floyd's singing, while Goob just eats it up!

This is interesting, as that was the scene where I first thought I was noticing
that Floyd didn't do any real walking. As I recall, first you see him standing
propped up by the courthouse back wall, behind where Thelma Lou is laying out
her cake. Then she takes the cake and walks into the back room and calls Floyd
to come hide with them but you don't see him actually moving other than
shifting his upper body slightly. When Barney walks in, you see everyone pop
out of the back room but you don't see Floyd until the camera has shifted to
Barney then back to the surprise group. But that's coming strictly from my
memory, and most likely from the butchered TVLand version, so I'm definitely
going to look more closely the next time it plays on Me-TV which does a great
job of keeping the episodes virtually intact.

2010-02-05 Thread DAVID QUINN

Here is an interesting question in the light of all the information that Tom
Kessel has posted about Floyd on this site lately. Which was the last episode
where we actually see Floyd walk? There were several episodes where we hear
Floyd talk, and then we hear footsteps, and then Floyd is sitting down, but we
do not actually see Floyd walk. I know in Otis Sues The County and Goober's
Contest we hear the phanton footsteps. The last show where I can remember
seeing Floyd walk was, I think, the show where Aunt Bea won all the prizes and
everyone is at the Taylor house watching the show. Everyone gets up and goes
to the kitchen to see the appliances. I believe Floyd walks in that episode,
but I might be wrong. Does anyone have a different, or later episode where
Floyd walked?

Orville Hendricks - The Butter and Egg Man - I can still walk, but I mean to
tell you it takes twice the effort to get half the distance now a days. But
don't feel sorry for me, Martha and I support each other while we walk and I
would not have it any other way.

But Joe They Did Have a Stunt Double for Post Stroke Floyd

2009-08-03 Thread tom kessel
I found it interesting someone questioned if Floyd (Howard McNear) had a
double after his stroke. I can site easily one episode (more if i think

wait on and Floyd had to move on and if you look closely at the backhead
view, of the driver in the convertible ,trust me it isnt Floyd (Howard). And
here is an open debatable question for a possible Floyd Double. . In Floyds
BarberShoppe , Floyd is talking to Andy outside the barbershoppe , sitting
in his car. how interesting that when the conversation ends, the camera pans
back to Andy as we hear the sound of Floyd driving off. Either the sound was
dubbed in . if not im sure a double was used tho not scene. nice effect too.

I was watching the episode when Andy, Aunt Bee and Opie return from Hollywood.
Aunt Bee wins a lot of kitchen appliances. In one scene she is showing Floyd,
Clara and another lady all the appliances after they have been installed.
Floyd mentions he didn't see the dishwasher and then he walks in from the left
side of the screen. When they were first in the kitchen it looked like Floyd
was holding onto the wall or corner to maybe help him stand. Just curious to
know if this was after the time he had his stroke or not.

Opie Alone and Floyd Walking

2009-05-31 Thread Jeff Howard
It is so funny to me how often the minds of folks here in Mayberry
are thinking the very same thing. As I was watching Andy, Barney and
Aunt Bee at the dump, I began thinking the same thing: Did she just
leave Opie alone at home in the bed? Then I thought it was probably
another testimony to way times have changed from the 60's to
today. Since crime really wasn't an issue in Mayberry, I guess you
only had to worry about things like fires, etc. Very different from
the world we know.

I am also intrigued by the great job the directors/producers did in
making it appear that Floyd could walk. There is another great scene
in the episode where Howard buys the barbershop. Within the episode,
we find Floyd sitting in his car outside the Courthouse talking to
Andy. At the end of the conversation, they make it appear as though
Floyd is moving over into the driver's seat--of course this not
really happening.

Floyd was such wonderful actor and such an important member of the
Mayberry cast. In fact, to me it often seems as though he was two
wonderful actors--the Floyd we meet in the early episodes like the
one where he was posing as rich businessman calling himself Wretch
as he stared at himself in the looking glass, and then the
post-stroke Floyd we come to know in the later episodes. What an
actor! I would love to have met him.

Are there any trained noticers out there would know the answer to this
one.In the first season episode Stranger In Town, Floyd is played by
someone other than Howard McNear. I was wondering why that gentleman played
Floyd for just that one episode. Somehow Mayberry wouldn't have been the same
without Howard McNear playing the role.

Intense music. But let's not get into Us and Them. It's all on the Dark Side of

The real Pink Floyd was a Delta bluesman. But it made for a great T-shirt.

laugh track, floyd

2008-10-11 Thread eric swolgaard
Just watched Opie the Birdman and was puzzled over the fact that the entire
episode was lacking a laugh track, even prior to Opie's tragic killing of the
mama bird. The beginning scene in the courthouse had a comical interchange
where Barney cautioned Opie not to stick his tongue out, then does it
himself-no audience laughter! Has anyone else noticed this?
Also, can anyone remember the last episode with Howard McNear before his stroke
and the first to feature him again? I remember an episode towards the last of
the 3rd season where Andy and townspeople are in the barber shop and allude to
Floyd being out for lunch. I had the feeling that Howard McNear had already
suffered his illness and they wrote him into the script as a reference out of
respect. I later remember Floyd's appearance in the 5th season in Goober takes
a car apart. He was seated and showed little physical movement but was as
hilarious as ever.Any thoughts on this?

In an episode of The Real McCoys first aired in November 1959, Howard McNear
appears as a junk dealer and appears to be wearing the very same barber's
coat as in TAGS. Since McCoys was filmed on the 40 acres lot, this may be
the first wearing of the smock. He could have used it in the Beaver
episode, but I doubt it since it was a different studio.

Also, will someone e-mail me when y'all are done talking about TV Land? I

Floyd the barber

2008-07-22 Thread mary cook
I am responding to the arcticle in the wbmutbb about if Floyd was funnier
before his stroke or after??? I think he was funny all the time. He was a great
actor, I think he was really funny when the manicurist came to town and wanted
to put up a table and do manicures at Floyds barber shop.  Anyway I read George
Lindseys book (Goober in a nut shell) and he talked about Howard Mcnear, they
were friends and that Howard was a great actor and that when he would have a
scene all the cast would stand around and watch. The cast would stay around
after their scenes were done just to watch Howard perform. George said no one
did that for any one else. Just Howard. He said he was worth watching and so
funny. George also said that Howard got frustrated some times when he couldnt
get the words out and the cast was really patient with him and worked with him.
They sound like they were a great family unit!!!   That is why we all still
love them so much today!!!

Floyd, Silent Cal and me

2008-07-01 Thread Tom Lawrence

Floyd's fascination with Calvin Coolidge has a local tie for me.
President Coolidge handed out small slips of paper stating I do not choose to
run at the old Rapid City High School in August 1927. I live right behind the
school, which is now called Dakota Middle School. It's a great old building and
Coolidge used the principal's office as his press office when he was spending
the summer in the gorgeous Black Hills.
I have been inside the school but didn't see or hear from Silent Cal or Funny
Floyd. But history happened here and Floyd knew it!

re: Emmett Replacing Floyd

2008-06-27 Thread John Foster
The only thing I would disagree on, would be they did have more than one gas
station attendant - Gomer and Goober. The same thing could have happened to
Goober that happened to Warren, but I guess Goober was a strong enough
character that he made the cut. Although I've got to say, Goober was never one
of my favorite characters. He had his moments though! Ain't you got a
jack?. Maybe what made it work was Gomer introduced him into the show - maybe
that made it ok!

I think the difficult part for Jack Burns aka Warren Ferguson was that he
not only had to replace Don Knotts, but he had to also replace Barney Fife.
I think they writers and producers of the show realized their mistake when
they attempted to do just that because when our beloved Floyd had to leave
the show they did not replace him with another barber. Rather they brought
to town good old Emmett Clark as a fix it man and merely put him into
Floyd's vacant shop. I think if they would have attempted to bring in
another character as a barber that too would have been a dismal failure.
Mayberry is a town of unique characters. There was only one sheriff, one
deputy, one barber, one town drunk, and one gas station attendant. To try
to replace any of these classic personalities would not only have been a
failure, it would have been a grave injustice to their memory. And while I
am at, there is only one Ken Anderson, and the world can be mighty glad of
that fact. As my wife says, I am irreplaceable, and if I should meet my
demise before she does, she does not plan to replace me with a new husband.
She will just get a dog instead.

That about the best news we've had on the Digest in quite some time.
Thanks so much Allan!!! I think I'm going to cancel my weekend plans
and spend it in the Library (I mean Digest Archives)

1) Seriously, this is really helpful for veterans, because you know
that you or someone else wrote something about a particular topic and
you can't find it ore remember it. You know that if Paul Mulik wrote
it, it most be factual, If Kenneth Anderson wrote it, its probably
touching, if Dapper Dan wrote it, its probably funny, if the Untrained
Voice wrote it..its full of typo's , (and so many more) but you can go
back and see what we said.

2) For the new kids, just get under there (the Digest Archives) and
take a think. Put in a subject and see what all has been written about
it. Whether its ring tones, or Hawthorne Village, or recipes...you can
find it all in the Digest Archives.

3) You students out there working on a paper. Here is where you can do
your research. It's the Wikopedia of the Andy Griffith Show.

Yeah Yeah, the Archives are back this is BIG!!

With Sincere Thanks

Funny Floyd

2007-12-12 Thread John Foster
I've been watching the color episodes on TVLand the last couple weeks and you
always observe something new when you are watching the show for the 10,000th
time! Anyway, it struck me how for a relatively short period of time, Floyd
fills the spot of Barney as the one person that can make Andy really laugh or
at least seem at ease. I love those early episodes where it looks like Andy is
about to lose it during Don Knott's scenes. After Knotts is gone, we've all
noticed how Andy just isn't the same. But I've noticed recently that Floyd
fills that spot somewhat as Andy seems very relaxed and happy around Floyd in
many of the color episodes. As time goes on and Howard McNear becomes more ill
that changes, but for a time, it is really neat to see Andy and Floyd together.

Anyway, just an observation!

Best of luck to you and yours.

John F.
