Re: Where is everyone?

2024-03-02 Thread Janet Anderson
Well, as for me, I really slacked off on posting to the digest because I had so
much trouble with my posts not going through. It's discouraging to spend time
and effort writing a post and then never seeing it appear on the digest; or, as
in a few cases, seeing it appear several days or a week or two later when it's
not relevant anymore. I don't know what caused that because I didn't used to
have that problem, and I've been a member of the digest for well over twenty
years. Having said that, I do still read every digest that I get.

I do not spend a whole lot of time on Facebook, but I do read and post more
there. It's immediate, you can post photos, and it's easier to interact with
folks. The digest still has its place, but I think we all have to admit that
it's pretty "old school" these days! I commend Allan for keeping it going for
those who don't do Facebook.

Now, I just hope this post goes through and I see it in tomorrow's digest!

Hey Wilbur,

Where was it shot?

2022-02-10 Thread Joe
First, I enjoyed all the comments about distances, etc. on TAGS. As Janine
said, the writers, directors, and actors never could have known that 60
years later, devoted fans would be analyzing every little detail of every
episode`.

My question is: where were the outdoor scenes in "The Perfect Female",
where Andy takes Karen crow shooting, filmed? With all the rock formations
in the background, was this Franklin Canyon Park ("Myers Lake") - or
actually on the 40 Acres lot? I've also wondered about that dirt road where
so many scenes of speeding cars were filmed, and where Fletch got run off
the road, etc. - was this on 40 Acres? Just curious.

JOE from G.I.

P.S. Thanks to Jeff for the info. on Ron Howard being on that podcast -
interesting and enjoyable. What really comes through is that with all his
fame and fortune, Ron is just a great human being.

Where are You Response

2018-09-18 Thread Ken Anderson
Regarding "Where are you"?

My theory is that people are connecting on the various Mayberry Facebook
pages as they can post photos, etc. I know I am doing that more.

I notice too that when we do post on the Digest usually there aren't many
comments or responses. Use to be comments would generate a lot of
discussion, but that doesn't seem to be the case as much now.

Anyway, that is my theory, for what it is worth.

Andy and Barney in the city (Where?)

2015-10-11 Thread Joe McSparin
A couple of things with regard to the Oregon discussion from earlier.

1. In the episode Barney and the choir same season but earlier episode,
Andy refers to the wanted flyers from Raleigh. This establishes that their
location is North Carolina prior to the City episode.

2. In the Big city episode he tells Aunt Bee they would only be gone for 2
days.

3. I recall from some trivia picked up somewhere that the map behind
Andy's desk is actually of Iowa, showing that they would often just use
props or backdrops that don't always exactly fit.

Just my two cents worth, but I'm always willing to take change back :-)

Where does Goober live?

2014-06-06 Thread Paul Mulik
A day or two ago on one of the Facebook groups, the subject of residences came
up, which got me to thinking: do we ever see Goober's residence? I've been
thinking and thinking (without a bucket) and I can't think of a single
appearance, until Mayberry RFD. There's a funny scene where Sam and Mike visit
Goober, and a Mike is impressed by Goober's fishing trophy (mounted taxidermy
fish), but it turns out Goober didn't actually catch it, he found it floating
in the lake, dead.

Anyway, someone said Goober lived at the gas station, but I'm pretty sure
that's incorrect. For example, the first time we ever hear about Goober is in
Man in a Hurry, when Gomer and Mr. Tucker are at the filling station. Gomer
gives Mr. Tucker Goober's phone number, which implies that Goober doesn't live
right there in the station. Then later, in Mind Over Matter (the one where
Goober is convinced he has been seriously injured) when Aunt Bee drives to the
gas station, Goober tells her, I've got to go home, I've got to lay down right
away ... I'll just go to my place, but Aunt Bee insists, there's no one there
to take care of you.

So if someone can think of any TAGS episode in which we see Goober's residence
or in which Goober mentions where he lives, please refresh my memory, which
sometimes gets a little rusty these days.

2009-06-04 Thread Victor Friskey
In one of the Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. episodes Gomer says Mayberry is 50 miles from
Raleigh. In 'The Cannon' episode of TAGS the would-be museum thief says he
doesn't
know what those people are doing up in Raleigh referring to not having papers
to relieve
Goober as guard. In effect he says this twice. In 'Off To Hollywood' Andy tells

they have taken trips up to Raleigh. If up refers to north I wonder where the
idea comes
from that Mayberry would be in the Mt. Airy area. When in reality Raleigh is
nearly 150
miles southeast. Also in 'The Cannon' episode Did Goober and Warren move the
cannon.
When Goober comes to relieve warren he walks the lengh of the trailer to the
trailer hitch

his back to the door of the trailer and watches warren and Goober. Whose been

You can also see him reading a Mount Airy newspaper (but it's not real clear so

It's when Aunt Bee gets a call to help a sick relative and Andy says, She

Airy name pretty well. Before I knew that was where it was from, I wondered
where in the world this place was and what it meant to the show.

Where is Siler City ?

2008-09-23 Thread Holland Shoaf

I just made a post about how Siler City was in the wrong place on a recent post.

In another episode Siler City is in the wrong place.

Howard Sprague was helping out Tommy Parker with his homework. He was being a
big brother to him through some type of helping a kid out thing. Tommy didnt
want to study and cleverly directed Howards attention to his attractive sister
Betty. Tommy told Howard she had a terrible bus ride to Mount Pilot where she
worked at a dance hall and the bus dropped her off in Siler City. IF this gals
working in Mount Pilot, shes going in the wrong way if shes being dropped off
in Siler City.
Whats the reason the writers have put Siler City so close to Mayberry ( and Mt
Pilot ) when in reality its 2 counties away?

Hi everyone and especially Allen.
For several weeks now I have not received the digest. H_E_L_P!
Because I haven't gotten the digest I don't know if anything has been
written in it about the Don Knotts Home Town Celebration
but I did attend it and had a wonderful time. Of course David Browning
performed and throughout the event Dave and I enjoyed some
great conversation. I very much enjoyed Karen's performance; Tied Up In The
Knotts. And I enjoyed Francie's presentation. There were other
entertainers and performers, some of which I missed, but the above mentioned
were my favorites. There was also plenty of entertainment
for children and family's. Should they have the event again you might want to
consider attending it. . But please don't steel the Don
Knotts Blvd street signs. The county commishoner personally told me that they
are for ever replacing those signs due to theft.

Thanks Paul for your help on opening and closing credits. Pretty much
confirmed what I thought was the case. I find fascination with such details.
Its also interesting to me that special guests would also get various levels
of credits in the closing. Some noted as Special Guest, some as Guest Star,
some simply in larger, bolder type. Do you suppose their agents negotiated
such language? I might have only imagined seeing Elinor's name on the opening
credits. Thanks again. Scott--That is some expert noticing on the rock
throwing scandal! I will have to check that out! Amazing that civilians can
pick up such details.

(Its another trivial triviality as to whether the clip runs long enough show
the rock hitting the watermany times it is faded out before the splash.)

I would have to agree its probably not a local rock! We'll have to have it
sent over to the boys at the lab. They'll have an answer in 18 hours.
Appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Now lets all break it up and go about your business. Move along folks.

Fishing for Answers--Where is the Real Fishing Hole?

2007-05-28 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
Fishing Spots

Hey I just thought of something that I don't know if we've ever talked
about (since I've been here). Also, I think this issue might add some
insight at to why the color years may not be quite as popular (beside
the fact that Barney was gone).

OK, have I got your interest? I can't believe this doesn't come up more
often.

How many times and how many different spots did Andy go fishing in? In
the opening sequence of the show, of course, Andy and Opie are going
fishing to the whistled tune of The Fishing Hole. (I'm not sure if we
ever see them fish in that spot!), so there should be lots of fishing,
right?

In Episode #1, Andy and Opie try to teach Aunt Bee to fish along the
side of a lake. Is that the Fishing Hole?
In Episode #2, the Manhunt, we see Andy's boat, Gertrude, leak and sink
with a fugitive in it, but we don't know at that point where his
favorite fishing hole is.
In Episode #33 Opie and the Bully, I believe the first aired episode of
Season 2, we finally see Andy and Opie go fishing together alone. This
is the classic scene that we see of Andy and Opie sitting on a rather
steep slope. (was that on a TV Guide cover? Its on the DVD cover of
Season 1) On the way to the car, Andy tells his memorable Hodie Snitch
story of how he held on to that fishing spot. So this must be his
favorite fishing hole, right? But we never see it again (that I can
recall)
In Episode #35, The Woman Speeder, we see Andy, Opie and Barney after
they've come back from fishing, but we don't see them fish. Perhaps it
was at that same spot?
In Episode #40, Opie's Hobo Friend, again we see Andy and Opie getting
ready to fish, (same Hodie Snitch spot??) and later see a sophisticated
fishing lure.
In Episode #47, Bailey's Bad Boy we see Andy and Opie get a line in the
water, as they fish off the dock with Ronald Bailey. (new spot? Is this
the Fishing hole?)
In Episode #49, the Jinx, of course fishing takes prominence as Andy
invites Henry Bennett to be fish from his boat with he and Barney. That
silly leak is back (from episode #2), and they sink. (that must be the
Fishing hole, right?)
In Episode #73, Opie's Rival, we see Andy in a boat and for the first
time that it does not sink. Actually he fishes twice. The first scene
is just He and Opie, and it's about as memorable as the Hodie Snitch
spot as he and Opie have some special bonding time, and later become
blood brothers. (must be the Fishing Hole??) Later, as he and Opie take
Peggy fishing, and Opie gets jealous as Peggy gets all the attention.

In Episode #75, The Bed Jacket, we see Andy and Opie fishing off the
dock again. (looks like same dock as Ep. 47) while Mayor Stoner tries
to buy Eagle -Eye Andy. (Is this his favorite spot/fishing hole??)
In Episode #140, Andy and Helen have their day, Andy ventures out in a
boat with Helen, but we never see the fishing pole.
In the Color Years-we only see Fishing once that I can recall,
Episode #198 Big Fish in a Small Town.In this scene, several
fisherman are all along the shoreline in yet a different spot (or is it
the same as episode #1??). I like the color years, but perhaps this is
why some do not-Not enough fishing scenes, only 1 in 3 years ???

We see Andy at a dock again with Helen in #169 A Warning for Warren, but
there is no fishing evident.
So is the most famous/favorite fishing hole the Hodie Snitch Fishing
spot, or a spot out in the water on the boat where he takes Henry
Bennett and Peggy??? or the dock?? What do you think?
OK, help me fill in the gaps. Were there other fishing scenes? If no
more scenes, there were lots of other fishing references, what were
they?

The Untrained Voice
I hope I've baited your interest all with this fishing story. I've
done my research, I think these facts are good, but there is more to be
told.

Where Do You Suppose That Came From?

2007-03-20 Thread bcq145
The following is a true Mayberry Moment. Hope you enjoy reading about it half
as much as I enjoyed living it.

Little four-year old red haired boy was propped up in bed watching a favorite
movie with a tray of chicken, fries, corn and tea on his lap, and me right
beside him. Every now and then I would hear, Corn, and I (who willingly
spoils this little red-haired boy beyond belief) would feed him a spoon of
corn; next, the command, Chicken, would be heard, and
the appropriate food would be placed in Mr. John Clay's mouth. Then, Tea,
and so on and so on, until finally
I asked myself, where did this little Opie-look-alike come up with this? Now
this little guy has been receiving TAGS since the womb.
Do you think that Mayberry can be genetic? Maybe that explains the red hair.
His dark-haired daddy sure has been asking a lot of questions! lol (granddaddy
is a red-head)

Laura Lee Hobbs, Dime Store Clerk and Gold Truck Watcher Extraordinaire--and no
red hair on our side of the
family, but we wouldn't change a lock of hair on our little boy's head for the
world.

He sure is nicely mannerized.

This quote is from I think the name of the episode is something like
Stranger In Town where the guy, (now I have tip of the tongue phenomenon
and
can't think of his name at all) knew everything about the town because he read
the Mayberry Gazette with his buddy while in the Army. He was making the folks
nervous because he knew everything about them, and they knew nothing about
him. Barney was trying to figure out if he was a foreign spy. Sprecken Ze
Deutsche and Andy was talking to him in the courthouse after he had called on
Lucy Matthews and wanted to marry her.
That was my first entry on here and I didn't think about signing my name.

remember hearing on the radio years ago (early 1990's sometime) that he
had, and a guy who called in to the local radio talk show at that time,
said he had lived next door to Don. But I've never heard any more about

have any insight into this?? Totally false, totally true? Thanks.

Whilest I'm writing, I think I'll throw in my two cents about how Andy was

expressing the frustration he felt about Aunt Bee doing something that might
possibly hurt or embarass herself. Kinda like he sometimes did toward Opie, or
toward Barney when he would come up with some kind of scheme. Like with Helen,
Andy knew better than to push the ladies in his life too far. I'll betcha he

Where is Mayberry

2006-10-13 Thread BCunnin107

I caught another geographical issue recently that I had never noticed
before. This is in the episode where Congressman John Canfield came to
Mayberry.
Andy is remarking how Aunt Bee got in very late the night before. Aunt Bee
says
He took me to The Reef at Nags Head and describes a seafood dinner they
ate.

Wow! No wonder Aunt Bee was in late. Anyone from NC and anyone who has ever
traveled to the Outer Banks can attest to the fact that there is no quick way
to get to Nags Head (not by car anyway). There is no Interstate anywhere near
Nags Head and you have to travel U.S Highways and potentially smaller roads
to get there depending on which route you take.

Based upon the roads at the time, and the somewhat floating location of
Mayberry, the trip could have taken as much as 3 to 4 hours one way to get
from Mayberry to Nags Head, or more than six hours round trip. Hope the dinner
was good! No wonder she got in late!!!

(Perhaps this is just one of Andy's subtle ways of recognizing the folks
back home. Of course, from Manteo Nags Head would be a much shorter trip)
