Hello Again, I have to admit I never thought I would get more learnin' than Ernest T. received from Ms. Crump, but I keep learning more and more from asking for assistance on finding a new "Mayberry" themed car tag. This time Sheriff John informed me today that the DC on the DC 269 tag does have a meaning with it. Let's see if anyone besides Sheriff John can come up with it. Hello Everyone, First, I want to say thank you to everyone who posted on here and for those who actually sent me suggestions to my email. There have been lots of good ones. I was unaware of the DC 269 until Ron from LaVergne, TN sent it to me along with a picture. I had not thought about good ol' 14A or the addresses either or even Ol' Sam. I have compiled them all and I have discussed them with my daughter, so now I will need to go home and get her permission to choose which one will be next. TAG license plates
License plates are issued in each state. So each state could come up with their own TAGS related specialty plate but it has to pass a lot of stringent tests with the states' guidelines. Most states have a limit on the number of specialty plates. You'll never get all 50 states to issue the same plate, I can guarantee that. Go to your own states' website...should be (state name).org and search for state issued license plates. There you'll find the rules for submitting an idea for a potential plate. Then get down there with those spiders and pray. Years ago, someone made "tribute" license plates, advertised on the Digest and I bought one. It's yellow with (raised just like real plates) black JL-327, Official is written across the top and North Carolina 60 is written across the bottom. I'm often asked what "official" title do I hold.I ask them if they paid attention to the plate's frame. It says "I'd rather be watching the Andy Griffith Show" They do a double take and then give themselves the head slap and laugh. Hello Everyone I have a request. I have had my tag for about 12 years now and I got a call from a policeman in the state I live in Tuesday night. Seems that he and his son have refurbished an old squad car but the one thing missing is the tag JL 327, which belongs to me. His son is going to drive the car to his senior prom and he asked me to let him know one day if I ever decided to let the tag go. Well, the more we talked and the more I thought, I figured JL 327 belonged on the squad car like it was supposed to be. I never found one to get to put it on. So I am letting him and his son have JL 327 for their squad car. But I can't come up with a good replacement tag that has the same ties to the show that JL 327 does for me. Does anyone have any other ideas of a tag I can get to replace JL 327? I have come up with TAGS, MAYBRY and ERNESTT. Depending on the number of letters will depend on what I version tag I can get. I also have the idea maybe for Allen or someone else that if they start a Specialized Plate series to remember TAGS that if it is approved then part of the cost of the plate is sent to the 501 C(3) to be used for whatever it was established for. This could go towards smaller town law enforcement or even to help keep the Arts Council funded. Just an idea. I am the proud owner for 15 plus years now of BFIFE as my license plate here in NC.It's fun to look in my rear view mirror and see people smiling and pointing to the passengers in their car to look at my plate. I have North Carolina JL-327 for my squad car but cannot use them in Wisconsin. I used to just clip them on over my regular collector plates at car shows, but quit doing that as I had to explain too many times that I was not from North Carolina. I do have B FIFE on my Saturn. Concerning those of you asking about getting a badge like I have. I talked with the company and you would have to go to their website and design it like I did. I don't recall the number of the badge that I selected so you would have to just search through them all and find the style that I used and then build your badge around that. For a long time in Tennessee the license plates started with a number from 1-95. The number was assigned to a county based on population. For example 1-Shelby 2-Davidson 3-Knox 4-Hamilton. If a car had a plate that was 3-A3456 then it was issued in Knox County. Back in the 1960 era, you could look at the prefix of a license and almost tell where it was from. Every city or town and a particular prefix due to the plates for that town being sent in a batch, all in order. In 1963 Raleigh was about 30,000 and is now almost 350,000, so it would be hard to recognize a plate from a particular area as we did back then. BTW, my first NC plate in 1963 was VC-357. They may not show the county on the plates but you can tell by the first numbers or letters where it was issued. The same is true with our social security numbers each set of numbers is for the state. county and or city where it was issued and will also verify if it is a true number and not forged. Susan W.V. Hi Gang -- I think I know exactly how Goober knew the lady lawyer's car was from Raleigh after looking at her license plate. IT WAS IN HIS SCRIPT, LOL. :)) Sorry, I just couldn't refuse that one. Actually I find it interesting about the reverse shots and other production tricks, but I rarely look for them, When TAGS comes on I just sit back and enter Mayberry the way it was meant to be and enjoy the characters and stories. Dennis had some nice comments about the Indy 500 broadcast. Being in broadcasting and a part of that network for a long time I have had the pleasure of working with most of that crew and being around them at various functions. I agree, compared to many of today's events, the Indy broadcast is one of the most professional you will find. It gets even better when Gomer steps up to the microphone. No, I do not recall NC having the county on the plates. In those days the gas filler was in the back of many cars behind the plates. The car may have had a license plate bracket or a decal or chrome name plate of a Raleigh car dealership on the back I think I will grow a beard so I can think on that some more. Was watching "Andy's Trip to Raleigh" the other night and noticed something I had never paid attention to before. When the lady lawyer, Lee Drake unexpectedly comes to Mayberry to find Andy for a further deposition, she stops at Wally's to ask Goober if he knows where Andy might be found. Goober walks to the back of her car, looks at her license plate, and says something to the effect, "You're from Raleigh, I see". Now as far as I know, North Carolina has never listed county of origin on its license plates as some states (e.g. Georgia) do. Is this correct? If so, how did Goober know where she was from? I thought I'd give a couple of guesses for the other two cars shown in Mayberry with a DC-269 license plate (other than the squad car). JL-327 license plates
There was one episode in 1960 (Don't remember mane of episode) where barney has parked the squad car with the drivers door next to a mailbox and is climbing out of the drivers window (or maybe just leaning out) and you can see the front license plate and it was DC-269 in that episode. All other episodes as far as I know, the plates were JL-327.
