I was just thinking that our plan for a group web site seems to have
stalled. I know that Dave Navarro who really started this all has been
absent from the list for some time (at least as far as I can see) due to
personal issues. Has anyone heard from him? Dave are you out there? I
haven't gotten any messages from the list that was started. I thought the
web site idea was a good one and didn't want to see it get forgotten as we
all dig in for the new year. Any thoughts?

I'd still like to be on-board, however I've got a place at university
and will probably be disappearing offline for a while so I can't commit
at the moment.

2003-11-29 Thread jmwcruiser
Interesting as I had been getting the *Welcome to Earthlink - this page is
under construction.* Today I get the HTTP 403. So something has been going
on.

I assume some folks have been busy with the Thanksgiving holiday and the
project will be starting up soon. However, after getting 2 emails though the
list, it is now quiet. Perhaps for the short term we should continue to use
this list for communication.

There were several people who volunteered to work on the site itself, but I
don't think we ever agreed on what we wanted on the site so that is a bit of
the cart before the horse.

There was quite a bit of interest in this cooperative marketing idea with
many folks volunteering to help. I know there are many skills out there and
in many different areas. I thought that putting a list of members and their
areas of expertise was one section we wanted on the site. Perhaps we need to
start with that --get a solid list of who wishes to participate along with
their skill set, and appoint someone to keep track of it all. Then we would
have a list to pull in people in the different tasks -- designing the site,
graphics, copy writing etc.

Although I like the way this has been so free-form with ideas popping in
from all over, I think we need to have a committee or some structure or this
will never get off the ground.

Just my two cents.

Janet

Hi Matt and Elizabeth
I joined and haven't received an email since the confirmation of my
joining. It usually takes a little time to get the list up and running.
I have volunteered to help with design, writing content, and coding plus
anything else I can help with.

In order to get at least one part of it up and running, I am
volunteering (at least for now), to make a list of those that volunteer,
and the skill(s) they want to have listed next to their name. I didn't
keep track previously, so will need to begin the list now.

The wdvl list has been pretty quiet lately, but not sure all members
will want to have emails about the webdevcoop.org to continue through
this list, so any volunteers can post their info to me off list at:

My replies below, Dave. Thanks for getting this rolling.

At 23:40 20/11/2003, you wrote:
Apparently, there are still some DNS issues. I'm working on them.

In the meantime, I'd like to propose the following:

  Membership is free
Can't argue with that!

Message board for general communication, cooperating on marketing, etc.
Good idea - hopefully so all can see the responses. I belong to one
organisation where mass emails go out but only the sender gets the replies!
Doesn't help to cut down on repeated requests for same info later!

  Various mailing lists
Fine - so long as we're not making things too cumbersome. Remember KISS!

Comprehensive directory of all members and their skills
Very welcome - perhaps including level of skill? (Novice - Intermediate -
Experienced - Guru)??

I'd like to have a bid section where developers can put projects up
for bid, not like eLance where users put projects up for bid, this is
for developers looking to subcontract all or parts of contracts out to
other members.
Good idea - with a price guide offered for the work if there is one - i.e.
where you've already quoted. Obviously some jobs might turn up with a
straight request for quote!

I really don't want to get into anything like forcing people to agree to a
set of ideals or standards. The purpose of this thing (at least to me) is
to simply help each other out as best we can.
Just an input on this - in a management consultancy group to which I belong
the Finder retains 25% of the fee and the Grinder or Doer gets 75%.
Client remains the property of finder at all times unless he or she
decides to relinquish to someone else. I think we need some sort of simple
rules such as these so everyone knows more or less what to expect. Stops
anyone that comes to the list later offering a job for (say) $1000 that
they have quoted their client $6000 for! Sure, there's no check - just
trust as with the others I work with - it just gives a guide for everyone.
(Split can of course be different here - 60/40 80/20 or whatever). Also
stops people posting jobs that will be of no interest to anyone and puts
some constraint on ethical behaviour as in many cases we'll know who the
client is when we do the work and there's always a temptation!

I think everyone that's involved in this so far seems sensible and honest
but the same applied to the consultancy group. Then we became known and had
an influx of people, some of whom turned out to be there just to vacuum up
all the work they could and never provide any, while a couple actually
poached clients. OK - we slung out the poachers, but only after they'd
damaged a couple of members income streams and the vacuum cleaners were
not given much unless no-one wanted it! . We all work hard to get clients
and can't afford to have them snatched away by anyone else that can't be
bothered to go out and find their own!

My two cents.

I'll also need to know who will be handling building the site. I can
help, but I really don't have the time at the moment to be principle,
nor do I want to run things... This should be a group effort.
If there are any issues regarding hosting the site, I'm happy to offer free
space within the space I rent (I've got plenty and costs are covered by
existing clients already) so long as it doesn't get too huge! Most
languages, facilities, etc. available.

Well, bad news is that I seem to have picked up a cold from one of my clients.

Good news is that I've cancelled my appointments for the weekend and I'll
be in the office catching up on work and fiddling with the server.

Which means that I'll be able to help people who will be working on the
site development.

I'm going to start contacting those of you who graciously volunteered now.

Hi Gang,

I haven't followed this entire thread, but I do have a suggestion to make
from the little bit I did grab and that would be to use a CMS instead of
just plain boards and a site. I have done both. Integrating a portal into
phpBB was more than I wanted to handle. The CMS will make things easier all
around, boards are included it's an all-in-one option. Here is an example
of the one I used for this kind of project:

2003-11-20 Thread Scott Adora Purkerson
I've just recently been been looking at CMSs also. So far, my favorite
has been phpWebSite (phpwebsite.appstate.edu) for the following reasons:

   1. It appears to have a simple setup, although I haven't done it
yet (maybe tonight or this weekend -- it's my first so I want to
   analyze it).
   2. The developers are trying to adhere to XHTML and CSS standards
(look at the crazy code coming out of some of the CMSs not using CSS)
   3. Uses php, mysql, and has several expansion modules including a
calendar, comments, photoalbums, faq, and polls.
   4. Still undergoing active development
That's my $0.02, although we should be more at the mercy of our webhost :^)

Being a lurker who contributes just once in a (great) while, I'd just
like to say thank you to y'all. Any 'cool' stuff on my web page is
most likely directly or indirectly from this group. Hope I can
contribute once in a while!

2003-11-20 Thread contact
Good points, Dave.

I have a few ideas:

What about having articles also...something like www.evolt.org. And
also a place where people could reply to the article on the same page
and there could be discussion that way.

Also, what about a file drawer of goodies: Design and ad templates,
sample contracts, etc.

Finally, could we have a directory of developers and their general
locations? It would be great to hook up with likeminded people for a
morning coffee if they lived in my vicinity.

My brain hurts...going to bed!

2003-11-20 Thread contact
Below is my reply to Stephen's email on webdevcoop list that
(apparently) has been eaten by the internet goblin:

Hi Stephen, et al.,

I agree that we need to decide what the site will be like, etc. Perhaps
that is more in Dave's department seeing as he is our fearless leader.
Once you development guys have an idea of what the site will be like, us
designers can have the contest.

I suggest a brain storming session where everyone submits ideas. Label
your subject: idea followed with a *descriptive* title. Let's get
everything on the table first, then it can be sorted.

Also, a mission statement of what the list/site is for and is not for
would be great.

Anyone agree?
