  Dear all,

I wish to update regarding WLM in Israel.

The competition took place during the month of Tishrei (mid September to
mid October) , during which 6,097 images were uploaded to the commons.

The most photographed monuments were, as expected, the Bahai Gardens in
Haifa, the Tower of David in Jerusalem, and Jaffa Port.

During the month of the competition we also held 20 events including two
photography workshops (sponsored by the Galitz school of photography), 18
guided tours (sponsored by the Council for Heritage Sites in Israel), and
two tours at the Israel Museum (the museum allowed free entrance to the
participants). about 400 people participated in the events. Our volunteers
chaperoned the tours ready to answer all questions about the competition.

500 people visited our both at a photography fare, 800 people wrote to
us requesting information about the tours, 600 joined our mailing lists.

We also had 20 newspaper articles (some of which internet newspapers and
some printed), participated in 6 radio shows and 2 television programs,
 talking about the competition.

Following the competition a Portal was created in Hebrew Wikipedia to
host the lists of sites, and the best images taken.

As to the judging - our volunteers shifted through the 6,000 uploads
choosing 250 photographs for the 9 judges (three professional
photographers, two of which from the Galitz School, two professional site
conservation experts from the National council, and four Wikipedians). The
judges rated the photographs choosing 30, and then from those chose the top
 10. The three images that got the highest points will receive monetary
prices (NIS 5,000 (about $1,250), NIS 3,000 and NIS 2,000). The Israeli
Internet Association conducted its own judging allowing the general public
to vote on its most favorite image, which will receive NIS 2,000.

The results will be published at our awards ceremony which will take
place on 7th November and will include a tour of old Jaffa, a cocktail and
an exhibition of the 10 winning photographs and the people's choice.

Following the awards ceremony, the exhibition will be hung at the gallery
of the Diezengoff Centre shopping mall in Tel Aviv until 1st December.

We wish to thank our volunteers who helped with the tours, and with
creating the lists of monuments (as you may recall we had to create the
lists for the competition - none exited before it). We especially want to
thank Yan who has created the judging system used by us and other
 countries.

We further wish to thank the international competition team for their
support and assistance, and their patience with our many questions.

 Regards,

 Deror

Thanks for the quick reply! My preferences on commons are in English, as
are my preferences in Google chrome (my browser of choice). I checked the
link again and just noticed the languages on the left. I guess I was
 expecting a non-wiki survey site.

Just to be clear, this was my second WLM survey - I filled out another
(from an MIT student?) last week. That was in English, which was why I was
surprised. I can't remember what language I used last year.

If you have your commons settings in Dutch, the link of the template
will have sent you to the survey in Dutch (odder changed that).
The template is the same in English, Dutch, French or German. They are
the same questions translated. If you participated in several country
competitions, you only need to fill the survey once. You can also fill
in the free-text answers in any language you want (it's then our problem
to figure out what that mean).

Besides, the survey has links in the sidebar to change the language it
is shown. Although nobody seems to be discovering them. :(

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Help make contact with user

2012-10-27 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Cristian,

I agree with the principle. That being said, it is up to the local
organizers to interpret it to some extent. Many monument photos have not
been identified by the uploader because they couldn't find their way in the
lists - and they were later identified by the volunteers. In my opinion,
that doesn't disqualify the image, because in the end it has been
identified. However, this rule does put the burden with the uploader. If
for whatever reason our volunteers cannot find the monument either (bad
description?) or they are just lazy - that is his problem and we can
disqualify the image.

The same goes imho for the email address requirement. We don't specify
/when/ it has to be given. If the local organizers are willing to put in
that effort I'm happy if they contact him otherwise and ask him to activate
the email address. However, it does put the burden with the participant -
if it takes too long for the opinion of the organizers, they can disqualify
the user from receiving a prize.

So my advice would definitely be: if you contact him otherwise, give clear
deadlines. If he doesn't respond before a certain moment: too bad, prize
gone.

Best,

Lodewijk

I find that approach poses a problem if they don't appear, since you are
publishing them as winners, then retreating.
We had several ineligible pictures preselected, but luckily none of them

Sorry to say that, but if contest's rules say you need to provide an
 e-mail to
participate, you have to disqualify that user if she did not provide
 an e-mail.
I know you may think it is very sad to be disqualified because of an
 e-mail address but:
 * First, bad consequences are well explained in Platonides'answer.
 * Second, rules are rules, and they are all equal. If we make an
exception for this I don't see why we couldn't make an exception for
photos of monuments not in the lists or photos uploaded 1 minute past
the deadline of the contest (or, more realistically, the case where
multiple photos where uploaded and some of them resulted uploaded
after the deadline of the contest).

However, if you would like to improve/add translations in your language you

complete at all and need more work before they can actually be used.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Deadlines jury process

2012-10-16 Thread Lodewijk
Hi all,

I would like to update you on the jury process for the international jury
as planned currently. We're already halfway into October, so I hope that
all countries have their juries working on the national selections!

The deadline for sending in your national selection is *31 October (UTC
timezone)*. Please try to submit your nominations before 20 October please
- after that date I will start hunting local teams and try to get them :)
To submit your nominations, please send a list of url's of your ten
nominees (not necessarily in any particular order) to
effeietsand...@gmail.com . You are allowed to submit less nominees, but not
more. Please make sure in the email you send that it is clear and obvious
that you are submitting the true nominations. Shortly describe your process
(can be one or two sencences) and who was on your jury. Please include at
least one jury member in cc.

I will ensure it arrives at the jury. I will keep an overview of all
received and processed nominations on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Progress#Nominations
 .

Next, the jury will take three rounds. In the first round, they will go
down from the expected 350 nominations (longlist) to ~25-50 (shortlist).
Next the jury members get the chance to remove images from consideration by
simple majority vote. Then in a third round, the best images will be chosen
from the shortlist and ranked by the jury. A jury report will be produced
based on these processes.

We hope to be able to make the results available to you (and in a press
release) by the end of November/begin of December. We will follow a similar
procedure in writing a press release as with the awarding of the Guinness
World Record.

Please respect the deadline of 31 October! If you miss it, things get
really complicated and we will probably have to disallow your nominees to
participate in the finale.

Thank you,

before those dates, but just in case...

Hi Jason,

could you set up one for the international jury too? I only want the star

Thanks!

[Wiki Loves Monuments] 2013 - wanted: volunteers for the coordinating team

2012-10-11 Thread Lodewijk
Hi all,

2012 has been the second year that we have an international Wiki Loves
Monuments competition, and it is quite a ride! While we're not finished yet
with this years competition, it is probably good to look forward to 2013. A
number of countries have indicated they would love to join next year. Some
who have already participated this year, some who will be joining for the
first time. Some who participated this year, but not to the extent they
would have liked to.

But for a smooth organization, we will need a dedicated volunteer team for
the international coordination. This year the team consisted from Maarten
(Multichill), Elke (Elya), Tomasz (Odder) and myself with the valuable
support of Barbara who was working from the Wikimedia Deutschland office.
At least a few of this team have indicated that they are unlikely to help
coordinate to the same level as this year.

Lets put it bluntly: without coordinating team, there will be no
international competition for Wiki Loves Monuments in 2013. So the question
is... are there any volunteers?

Maybe you wonder what this coordinating is all about. Most of it is stuff
that others will never see. Talking with network partners, keeping track of
status and documentation, a whole bunch of technical stuff in tool- and
database maintenance and also a lot of knowledge transfer to local teams
(chats, meetings, workshops). The time it costs can vary widely, but should
not be underestimated (I think a few hundred hours is on the lower side).
Of course the more skills and people, the less work per person.

Would you be interested? Just drop me a note or ask some questions on this
list, in a chat or somewhere else. We don't need to make this decision
right now - but if we want another WLM international - we will need to get
started with budget requests pretty soon thanks to the more complicated
budget allocation rules we're facing. I'm happy to help get that done - but
only if I'm confident that there will be a great team once again :)

I'm looking forward to any questions or emails on this topic.

Best,
Lodewijk (not on behalf of anyone)

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] 2013 - wanted: volunteers for the coordinating team

2012-10-11 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Nkansah,

thanks for your mail! For the coordinating team it is mostly important to
have a good mix of people who have time, commitment and experience. There
is no need that everyone has technical skills, but it would be very helpful
if some have. There is no official age limitation, it is more important how
mature one behaves (please note that this is basically a working group, and
not so much a formal board function).

There is not much software 'behind WLM' so there is in that respect not
much training. There is of course a lot of documentation, but mostly it is
(I'm afraid) a self-learning process.

Last year we ran the coordination with four very active people. This was
sometimes on the low side.

There is no formal geographical limitation - although being from a country
that successfully organized Wiki Loves Monuments - and that could organize
it again without your continued support would definitely be a big
advantage. I would really be sad if you joining the international
coordination team would for example mean that the activities in Ghana would
be decreased significantly.

Best,

Lodewijk

I guess thats all I wish to ask for now.

Wow, great form! I assume multilingual is possible? I'd be happy to help
make that happen if you let me know how.

For the output at multiple choise, please make sure that all translations
get the English choices as output. Otherwise interpretation is like hell.

Could you make the comment fields less wide and a bit longer?

Can you number the questions?

The second answer in When were (most of) your submissions for 2012 taken?
should say January - August.
The third option should say 2000 - 2011. I realize there's a bit of
weirdness with WLM2011, but I don't think we should lead them too much to
that. Lets keep it as similar to last years survey as possible here and
offer similar options.

At Motivation, 'Wikipedia' should be capitalized.

Could we add a statement at the top that there are no obligatory questions?

Thanks!

Just as a short remark: Most question suggestions are quite good... but we
should really really limit the survey to about 15 questions like last year.
Having a short survey proved to be very helpful in the number of responses
(got good feedback on that). I'm already having fights with Tomasz about
the 4 extra questions added so far - so please realize that if you want to
add a question, another question will likely have to disappear. Many good
questions were quite detailed, and with every question we should consider
what we want to learn from that answer.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 officially broke world record

2012-10-09 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Racso,

This is unfortunately how Guinness World Records works. The record has to
go to an organization (legal entity) or person that actually organized it.
Wikimedia Nederlands, as the official organizer of the international part
of the competition, is the organization that comes closest to it. Guinness
World Records isn't really built for online events, which is also the
reason you will see 'the Netherlands' as location for the competition, and
not 'Europe' (which would have been my preference for 2011). We can't
simply edit their framework - if we want to be recognized by them, we have
to make sure we fit in. Somehow.

Just a quick though: isn't there a way to give (not sure about which
would be the right verb here) the record to the Wiki Loves Monuments
Organizers (Worldwide)? While I'm very happy with it being given to WM
Nederland (Nederlands), I would be even happier if it could be given to
all the organizing teams at the same time (I'm only talking about the
record registry; obviously, if some kind of certificate or trophie is
given, I guess it has to be at a single place at once). If it's not
possible for the 2011 record, would it be for the 2012 (which we know we

We have seen it coming for a while, but now it is official: Wiki Loves

it might be that the requirements differ from category to category. The
cases you mention are indeed quite different from that, and some of them
are obviously different. They seem to be especially tough when it comes to
things that can be organized (since those need the closest certification).

In any case, I don't exclude the possibility that if we negotiate long
enough, we might be able to persuade them. However, that would have
significantly delayed the recognition. It was hard enough as it is - which
you can ask me about next time we meet, but I prefer not to discuss those
details on a public mailing list as you may understand :).

 Thanks for the answer, Lodewijk!

I'm confused. I've seen records given to the following:

- Augie (a dog, Where: USA) -

- The Arnold Family (a family, Where: USA) -

- The password 123456 (a password, Where: Not applicable) -

 http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/9000/most-common-hotmail-password-
- The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Seach Project (an internet
project, Where: [empty]; note that the record is given to the project, not
to the corporation that operates it) -

 http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/3000/largest-known-prime-number

Still, it's obvious that you have the most experience about the topic and
limitations here, given that you already have been in touch with the
Guiness World Records. Maybe the records *of this specific category* must
 be given to organizations?

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Questions about the Jury Tool and what to do with photos of non listed monuments

2012-10-06 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Michael,

Since being a monument is a precondition, I think they should be
disqualified from the contest - and not even be counted for the total
amount of pictures. If they were uploaded, but do not depict a monument at
all (not even a detail of it) then they should be considered as invalid
submissions, and the template should be removed.

Regarding monuments that aren't on the list: ideally you should reject
them in the first stage. I guess that problem is much bigger for countries
with thousands and tens of thousands of monuments than for Israel which has
about 800, but it's been my experience that it's often easy to tell just by
looking whether something is a monument.

Regarding rejecting images after you accepted them: this is the most
requested feature so far, and I will get to work on that ASAP.

Regarding sorting by user and in general: It should be possible. I don't
know if I'll be able to add the feature now, but I'll do my best. It is
however of lower priority than the previous feature.

For anyone else asking about the tool: feel free to catch me on chat.

Subject: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Questions about the Jury Tool and what to
do with photos of non listed monuments

 Hi everyone

I’m in the jury of WLM in Denmark and I have some questions about what to
 do and how it works.

Some of the pictures uploaded are not pictures of monuments on our lists.
What do we do about that?

The {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2012|dk}} template says “This image was
uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Monuments
 2012http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012
.“. The file WAS uploaded as a part of the competition so I do not think
that the obvious thing to do is to remove the template. Instead we could
perhaps add a parameter telling it is not eligible for the prize contest.

It is possible to fair images in the jury tool so the solution could be to
 “fail” them there.

Anyway I found out that a few of the photos in the contest should not have
been passed because they are not listed monuments. But I can’t find a way
to go “fail” a monument once it has been passed. So the only way I could
think of is to rate it with one star.

Do we have a manual how to operate the jury tool? I can’t find a “help”
 button somewhere on the tool.

For example if I click “Show My Reviewed

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Why deadlines exist

2012-10-05 Thread Lodewijk
hmm, good point! The unfriendlyness could perhaps be tackled by a message
on the talkpage of the uploader? (or did that already happen?). Also
replacing it with an alternative template it was uploaded for WLM, but
unfortunately outside the allowed timeslot in friendly wordings would be a
good way.

Lodewijk

2012/10/5 Vicenç Riullop vriul...@hotmail.com

Most concerns are for removing the WLM template, for any reason, by bot
or not. It can be seen as an unfriendly behaviour to exclude a file for the
contest. In fact, the submission was intented for WLM, successfully or not,
as the template reads. A solution is to keep the template with a note, i.e.
uploaded after deadline, not a registered monument, not a participant
country, etc. The template with any note can categorize instead in Images
from WLM in XX not validated keeping track of them and allowing any
revision. But this is an option to discuss for next year.

Maybe now the contest is finished, someone feels an urge to share
experience or volunteer? :)

Lodewijk

2012/9/28 Lodewijk lodew...@effeietsanders.org

 Hi all,

Last year an often heard question was whether we would offer certificates
for the winners. Although I wouldn't want one myself necessarily, it would
be nice if we at least can make sure to use a similar design.

Is there anyone who is willing to design something? Some criteria that
 come to mind:

 * There should be plenty of space
 * The theme color should be red (because of the logo). The WLM logo should
be prominently visible. Also 2012 should get a prominent place in the
design, as well as the name of the country.
 * There should be place for two signatures, but there should always be one
(for a jury chair). The second signature could potentially be used for a
director, president of the chapter or the main organizer.
 * The certificate should state:
 ** Name of the recipient
** File name of the photo
 ** Description of the photo
** Date Place of signing / ceremony
 * It should be possible to make the certificate up to four-lingual, but it
should also work nicely in English.

Anything forgotten? Ideally this would become a file that is easily
 adaptable.

Any previous designs are also welcome!

 Best,
 Lodewijk

This is the very process described here:

However, it doesn't appear that the bot has been run yet for Israel, or
alternatively it doesn't appear to be working. We don't have the commonscat

 categorized so far.

How often is this bot run? Can I run it myself or request it to be run

Hi Ilario,

I'm not entirely sure what you're meaning. The whole point of the e-mail
requirement (we never said they had to be identified *by an email*) was
that we are able to contact them. Turning their email functionality on at
Wikimedia Commons and/or Flickr would be sufficient. Since 123POI is
basically a similar platform as Flickr, it would be just as fine to confirm
your email address there. The reason of this rule wasn't to exclude people,
but to put the burden of providing contact information on the participant -
so that if they have turned email off - we can simply ignore them if we
want.

Unfortunately the national contest says that the photos must be in high
resolution and the user should be identified by an email.

So I suppose that the photos coming from this project should be considered
out of the limits of the contest.

Hi Ilario,

if you are so hard on such a rule, I think it would have been fair to tell
from the beginning of the contest that you will not allow alternative
platforms (because that is basically what you're saying). The
interpretation I would give to this rule, is that /on the platform you
uploaded/ you need to have your email address confirmed. That scales well,
and works in the current situation too.

I know you don't like the 123POI upload platform very much, but at the very
least we shouldn't let the users who used it suffer from that.

Absolutely, anyway the regulation of Wikimedia Ch says:

Afin d’être contacté, le participant aura renseigné son adresse de
courriel dans ses préférences sur le site Wikimedia Commons

It means that, if there was an email in Commons, the user would be
accepted. The regulation has been published some days after the start
of the contest so we may be flexible, so it means that there should
be at least a link to the user in another portal and we can spent some
time to contact him, but *at least* the email in Commons or everywhere
is a *must* to don't be excluded.

It's important, in my opinion to do it respectful of some other
 participants who followed the regulation.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Statistics - list of usernames?

some early stats on that. I realize we need to make corrections and all,

Looks pretty nice and useful! Thanks for the good work.

 Some suggestions:
 1. Three pictures are too wide for my screen, so the third picture of each
row appears off-screen and I must use the h-scrollbar to see it. That isn't
desirable, I think, as makes the process slow. I would suggest using 2
pictures per row, or, better yet, to allow the user to pick a number of
 pics-per-row.
 2. I would change the X (No) button for a Skip button, and make the
No to be the default (i.e., if the user doesn't mark a picture, it's
because it's discarded; if he wants to leave it for later, he must mark it
with the Skip button). That way, filtering would be faster and less
 tedious (less clics per page).
 3. Not sure about this one, but yet I put it here: What about removing the
check button (Yes) and allow users to click directly in the images to
select them as good? For the full-view, the image link below the image can
be used. This would also make the selection faster (clicking the big image
is a lot easier than aiming and clicking the small button).

 For now, that's all.

 Greetings!

the stories I heard so far outside this list are rather negative though -
at least for the iPhone. Apparently the GPS doesn't work well outside the

At the same time, it is interesting to see what an open API can do :)

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Idea for WLM app's afterlife

2012-09-28 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Philip,

that sounds like a great idea. Although I wouldn't limit it to articles
alone, but 'topics'. We could combine all articles with geo coordinates
(set one) with all monuments we already have in the database. Probably it
would be good to build in a way to exclude some topics from this
functionality (such as articles about huge areas, i.e. 'France').

If that works properly and is maintained well, it would be easy next year
to build another app, because you would just copy the app, give it some
different colors in the skin and just let it work from the monument
database alone, instead of the full geo-tagged set.

I'm not sure what resources it would require and how realistic that is, but
I think it might actually motivate quite some people.

Would it be possible to 'disable' the WLM app and explain people where to
find the new app which is more general in its approach?

Lodewijk

2012/9/28 Philip Chang pch...@wikimedia.org

 Here is an idea:

Turn the WLM app into a similar app for uploading photos related to
Wikipedia articles. This was in fact the original goal of the mobile photo
 upload project.

One take on this is to use the Nearby search and article search as a way
to find articles, then the upload will be given a title related to the
article and some metadata can include the article ID.

The WLM app will otherwise run the risk of not being functional past
 October, due to backend issues.

Just a quick thought. Let the mobile team know if you think this is a good
 idea.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] permanently removing buttons

2012-09-28 Thread Lodewijk
Sounds fair enough. Definitely this is a question for each project to
resolve for themselves. Different sensitivities in different communities...

Lodewijk

2012/9/28 Peter Ekman pdek...@gmail.com

There was a question of permanently removing the upload buttons on
English Wikipedia. Actually I think it is just a matter for the US
WP:NRHP, and may not go beyond that.

I don't think it is impossible to keep the buttons, and I think the
placeholder RfC was quite badly started and really doesn't apply
well to this question. More somebody blowing off steam than anything
else. Good editors do that sometime and there may be an underlying
issue that we didn't have time to deal with properly a week before the
 contest started.

On the other hand, as a permanent fixture, I don't like the buttons
where they currently are. For the contest they were fine, but they
attract too much attention away from the list's actual content.
Perhaps they might be moved to the description column and made
 smaller.

In any case, a fairly long discussion will likely be needed at
WT:NRHP, and removing the buttons, at least temporarily, will be a
show of good faith. None of this necessarily applies to non-NRHP
 lists on English Wikipedia.

Hi Philip,

Maybe I'm wrong here, but as far as I'm aware, the current monument
database is actually being scraped each night from the wikipedia lists. So
basically it is a mirror of the lists with a lag up to 24 hours (if
toolserver works etc). But maybe we're talking about different databases?
Probably it would be easiest to just use one way or another the Monument
Database we're running, rather than reinventing the wheel.

Lodewijk

2012/9/28 Philip Chang pch...@wikimedia.org

Back to Lodewijk's idea of articles and monuments, we unfortunately have
an issue with monuments, simply because the database is not maintainable.
However, I have wondered about accessing monuments through the Wikipedia
 pages that list them.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] certificates for the winners

2012-09-28 Thread Lodewijk
Hi all,

Last year an often heard question was whether we would offer certificates
for the winners. Although I wouldn't want one myself necessarily, it would
be nice if we at least can make sure to use a similar design.

Is there anyone who is willing to design something? Some criteria that come
to mind:

* There should be plenty of space
* The theme color should be red (because of the logo). The WLM logo should
be prominently visible. Also 2012 should get a prominent place in the
design, as well as the name of the country.
* There should be place for two signatures, but there should always be one
(for a jury chair). The second signature could potentially be used for a
director, president of the chapter or the main organizer.
* The certificate should state:
** Name of the recipient
** File name of the photo
** Description of the photo
** Date Place of signing / ceremony
* It should be possible to make the certificate up to four-lingual, but it
should also work nicely in English.

Anything forgotten? Ideally this would become a file that is easily
adaptable.

Any previous designs are also welcome!

Best,
Lodewijk

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Calendars

2012-09-24 Thread Lodewijk
Hi all,

responding to several points at once:

* For the license stuff: I suggest to just take the graphical CC BY-SA logo
that Creative Commons provides, and show that at the front page in a
corner.

* Let me just say 'no' to translating everything into all languages. That
is simply a journey I refuse to go onto. It would require a huge investment
of time from both translators and the coordinators. Lets do the thing that
worked well last year: short description in both the local language of the
monument and in English. (with exceptions for complicated regions adding
another language). Perfection is the enemy of progress: we're on a very
tight time schedule once we get to the jury results. We don't have any
resources to hunt after people, and any compromise is going to have
disadvantages too. If/when we do an online exhibition we could/should do
this though.

* For those that really really like, we have a few 2012 calendars left in
the WMNL office. I'm sure if you give a proper donation, you can get a few
;-) (contact Sandra Rientjes for that). For 2013 I think Barbara will come
later with a more detailed update on what is possible and what isn't. This
was still under discussion - the publisher did consider providing calendars
for public sale. I'm not sure if the WMF is going to order calendars - but
I suggest you contact them directly if you want to make that happen.

* Providing URL's to the original file is not required. What I can imagine
is that the file description in the last page contains the file names - but
then that is also barely usable (how well are you able to copy the hebrew
characters?). If you want to reuse the images, just go to the
Wikilovesmonuments website or Wikimedia Commons - both will contain a full
overview of all winning pictures. Lets not make things more complicated
than necessary. It is not a legal requirement, and lets not fool ourselves:
anyone with a little bit of google experience can type 'wiki loves
monuments winners' into google and will find them.

* On QR codes: I know some people really fancy them... personally I think
that they wouldn't really look well in the existing designs at least on the
photo pages. Again: lets not make the process more complicated (these codes
need to be created, pages can't be moved, weird characters etc. - all
potential errors and problems giving me a headache). People can find the
page with the winning pictures quite easily. If we add everything we *can*
add, it will be overkill.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. While some of it may not be implementable,
it is still appreciated.

Best,

Lodewijk

Thanks for the comments, WereSpielCheckquers and Platonides!

 1. I am not sure whether we'll be including file descriptions at all
this year; it was the only thing besides the last page that made the
calendars not language-neutral. This is something we try to avoid as
much as possible, as we're having WLM in more countries that use
 non-Latin alphabets than last year.

I'm not saying no to descriptions in English, but this /is/ a
problem, and we will not be able to translate them into the 37
languages used in WLM countries, especially due to technical and
financial reasons. If you'd prefer to have the descriptions below the
photos, I'll make sure to have them in a bigger font than last year
 :-))

 2. The names of the authors are listed on the last page of the
calendars, though as Platonides rightly pointed out, we forgot to
include a link to the page of the deed at creativecommons.org; this is
something we can improve this time.

I am not sure whether adding a link to a winning photo would be useful
 at all

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] 100 000 ?

2012-09-16 Thread Lodewijk
I didn't use this as a blogpost, since it didn't really have the size we
usually have for a WLM blogpost... Only two lines won't make it. Also, I
was all weekend at the GLAMcamp in London, so I didn't have the time to
write this myself.

Anyway, I think it would be nice to prepare a post for the 168.208'th
picture. Maybe a few other ones in the middle?

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Advice about what to do with a troll? participant

2012-09-15 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Oscar,

Thanks for your mail. I don't have the feeling from the column pictures at
least that this is a troll or attention seeker. Lets assume good faith, and
assume he indeed wants to make detailed photos.

Then I think that allowing them as images is totally fine. It may be
obvious that these pictures are unlikely to win any prize though.
Disqualification won't help anyone and will at best get you huge
discussions. What is important though, is that he identifies which monument
it is. Transcribing etc seems to me too much like you're making fun of him
- do I definitely don't agree with that suggestion.

So, if this indeed seems like a detail of monument 06-050, then just accept
it as a submission. If you want him also to make overview photos, you could
just ask him that in a constructive way like Hey, thanks for
participating! I see you make a lot of nice detailed photos, but I wondered
if you could, on top of that, also make a few overview photos so that it is
clear how these details relate to each other.

Hope that helps,

Lodewijk

well i looked, they are not geotagged.
so challenge him/her, ask them to geolocate them, ask them to
 transcribe them text.
this could be attention seeking behaviour, so give them some attention

 rules
don't state that uploading dozens of almost equal photos is invalid,
   this
guy is clearly stretching the spirit of the competition.

Any advice of how to deal with this kind of behaviour will be really

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] WLM Android App

2012-09-13 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Alex,

in the case of Kenya (I assume that is why you ask), the bottle neck
currently lies in adding Kenya to the database. We need someone a bit more
technical to do that. Unfortunately this hasn't happened yet. Once that
happened, it'll be a few days before it comes to the app.

However, that will be of little use if there are no coordinates in the
list. If you want monuments to show up properly, you should add
geo-coordinates to the list.

Best,

Lodewijk

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Slovak WLM

2012-09-12 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Matej,

I'm very glad to hear there's so much interest in organizing Wiki Loves
Monuments! While I don't consider it realistic to join in 2012 still, it
should definitely be possible to either organize something specifically in
Slovakia (using a similar competition model under a different name? You can
still use all the software and lessons we learned!) or join again in 2013.

If you organize something specific for Slovakia in two or three months, you
would still have enough time to organize everything locally. Trying to do
that within the WLM framework I expect to be too complicated (while I
should compliment you on your lists!). I would of course be happy to help
you on your way with that. You can find all documentation on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Documentation
which
also includes a lot of helpful lessons.

Best,
Lodewijk

 Dear colleagues,

The Slovak Wikimedia would like to start the Slovak version of WLM. We
don't have sponsors, but we thought that we should start somehow.
We know that it is a bit late in the game, but we thought: better late

 Any thoughts?

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Slovak WLM

2012-09-12 Thread Lodewijk
Hi,

if you're able to have everything in order before that moment I could
possibly live with it. However, you should have all business in order
before then (this is not to be underestimated at such short notice),
including prizes (no prizes is an option too, although highly unfortunate)
and jury.

However, I would be quite against having the finishing date of Israel.
Israel is here a strong exception because the hebrew calendar system is
different than ours, and newyear starts at Sept 14. This does leave them
with an extremely short time to run jury results. Having Slovakia with a
shifted timeline too, would be highly unfortunate. Also, this would mean
you would have to disqualify all images uploaded so far (you mentioned 100
accidental uploads?). So *if* you're able to join, I strongly prefer you
would still end at September 30. I know this doesn't sound nicely, but
otherwise things become very confusing.

Best,
Lodewijk

2012/9/13 Matej Grochal ggros...@gmail.com

 Dear colleagues,

First of all, thank you for the feedback.
Joining in with Israel in terms of the timeline seems like a do-able
option if we pushed the starting date further a bit. - What would be
 the hard limits on that?
The infrastructre is getting built as we speak (thank you for the help!)
Our thinking is that it is better to take this oportunity and not to
 wait until 2013.
WLM and the Wiki family is, after all, a project of hope,

 Thank you for your support,

 Matej Grochal

A possible solution would be to add an extra parameter: alternative_refnum.
You can even display both the refnum and alternative_refnum in the table,
but they would be two seperate parameters.

Many US historic districts have had several expansions, which results
in multiple reference numbers. In at least two cases, Charleston
Historic District in South Carolina, and one earlier, having multiple
refnums in the table results in the upload button being disabled. I
removed the extra refnums (leaving the first) in both cases and the
 upload button then worked.
Any suggestions for a general fix?

I have a couple of questions about the GLAM prize:

 1. Does it only take into account *buildings*? Or should I recommend the
participants to also photograph the inside (including contained material)
 of the g/l/a/m's?
 2. This may be obvious, but, Must the g/l/a/m's be monuments to

 Thanks,

Just to add to Tomasz' points (which I agree with): since the GLAM
category is created to make judging for the special Europeana sponsored
GLAM prize easier, please simply add images to that category if you're in
doubt. We can leave it up to the special prize jury to make that judgement
call. Most important is that they don't have to dig through /all/ WLM
 pictures.

 Hi Peter,
I have seen the topic of quality judgement of the WLM pictures being
brought up in several places (at the Featured Pictures Candidates page
on Commons, for instance), so just wanted to make it clear.

Obviously the jury members /could/ potentially notice that some of the
images are marked with some templates on Commons (if they ever have a
look there, that is), but I wouldn't call it a real danger for the
neutrality of their choices. Besides, there is no way that we could
control and influence the usual procedures of such a big community
like that of Commons, so we have to live with whatever they do.

As for the GLAM category, it is intended to gather pictures of GLAM
/buildings/ (both inside and outside), and not of the objects that are
located inside them. So if the picture shows only an object and not
the insides of the building (walls, ceilings, etc.), it should not
 belong to that category.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Photos with watermarks

2012-09-07 Thread Lodewijk
I agree with Vincenç. The easy explanation is: Sure, you're allowed to
submit photos with a watermark. However, because of the free license, we're
allowed to remove them. Also, it is very unlikely a watermarked image will
win the competition. So if you just want an easy way to donate your
pictures and removing watermarks is too much trouble: the pictures are
welcome. If you want to win something... it is probably better to remove
them.

Best,
Lodewijk

2012/9/7 Vicenç Riullop vriul...@hotmail.com

I don't like watermarks either, but following the KISS principle I would
say that any image accepted on Commons is acceptable on WLM although
watermarks are discouraged and the jury probably will disqualify them.

I had a look at a few random images there and I can identify a few cases:
 - real watermarks (didn't find any in the examples) are when a big
watermark covers a large and important part of the image, making it
unusable (think at the preview images from stock photography sites). those
 CAN'T be allowed;
 - signatures, small watermarks in an unobtrusive part of the image (most
of the time in a corner). I allow those but discourage them by explaining
the uploaders that grace to our free license, anyone is allowed to remove
 them, so is useless;
 - some photos have the date watermarked in a corner, this probably
happened most of the time in-camera and are unintentional. I feel them
 annoying but harmless;
 - i saw a few cases the name of an educational institution there. For
those I would ask the uploader if the image is really free (it may be an
internal policy to watermark everything at it may forbid derivatives).

So in conclusion I do not like watermarks, would alow some, would forbid
some, would question further some. Case by case.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Please put the mobile app banner on your country sites

Hi,

'IN-UT' is the ISO 3166-2:IN code for the state. It should indeed be
possible to automatically convert those.

The circles are probably more tricky. Before I revamped the tables into the
current shape, we needed that to create the unique identifier. Probably it
is best to just ignore the circles for the sake of this app - because it
will only lead to confusion since some states have them, and some don't.
And one of the circles is even names after a city in a different state...
Mentioning the district is probably more helpful.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] WLM banner problem

2012-09-04 Thread Lodewijk
I suggest to keep a pragmatic view here. Let's not like real wikipedians go
into all details and hurt ourselves here - but keep the spirit of free
knowledge in mind. In this case it seems obvious Susana doesn't object - if
she did she would have objected long ago and she indeed indicated
explicitly that she didn't require naming etc in this context.

For the stack, one of the creators of the image clearly objected to its use
in this way. Then lets not make a hard deal out of it, and just replace it.
It is not like we have a shortage of images. Ideally lets use a PD image
(perhaps one of the organizers would like to release one for this purpose?)

There is little to win in these detailed discussions.

 Hi everyone.

Is it necessary to provide attribution and license text URL after
every use of CC image? We can make a page 'Copyrights' on
wikilovesmonuments.org where every thing will be attributed. I mean
the banner stuff, website stuff, etc. Anyway, we'd have to link to
this page in the banner or what...

On Wed, Sep 5, 2012 at 2:04 AM, Tomasz W. Kozłowski
 odder.w...@gmail.com wrote:
  Hi Platonides and Pete,
in any case, we cannot use an image licenced under a Creative Commons
licence (which disqualifies almost all pictures from Wiki Loves
Monuments), as they all require an attribution (the name or pseudonym
of the author/copyright holder) and a URL to the licence text (not the
  deed!).

(Please also note that Susana specifically mentioned she does not need
to be attributed to when the WLM logo is used in relation to the
contest; however, the licence still requires a working URL to its
text, so we are violating its requirements here, too.)

I agree that we (the Wikimedia community) should set an example in the
usage of freely licenced files, so I am thinking as what we should do
  here.

We have two options: (1) remove the image created by Saibo from the
banners (but we should then also remove the WLM logo) or (2) add
working links to the images in the banners, and possibly also protect
their description pages; this would, however, mean that we'll need to
rebuild the templates so the links work for the files as well as for
the websites; to do that, we could only use the text as the link.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] WLM maps

2012-09-03 Thread Lodewijk
http://www.giswiki.org/hjl_geocoding.htm is probably the best option. The
template should already have a variable for lat/lon, and automatically
create the coordinates templates from that (this should work properly if
you work from the Wikipedia main namespaces). Just remember that if it says
W you need to make it negative, and the same for South.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Reuploading

2012-09-03 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Paul,

primarily this question is up to the jury. My personal opinion is that a
re-upload of higher quality is simply the same picture and this not a
seperate submission.

An edited version wouldn't be your own work fully, so wouldn't fit the
contest rules.

Best,
Lodewijk

2012/9/3 Paul Selitskas p.selits...@gmail.com

One of Belarusian contestants addressed me a mail with a question: may
they reupload the same photo with a better quality and what
consequences will it have concerning WLM.

So, may the participant replace the file uploaded for WLM with the
same file of better quality? Will the new file be treated the same as
if it was uploaded at the first place?

Besides this, I have a question of my own. Let's say, someone
submitted a photo for the contest. Then a random Wikimedian uses it in
an article. Then he wants to fix it (colors, perspective, whatever)
and actually he does it by replacing the original file with a new
fixed version of it. What next? Should the jury examine the original
version, or the fixed one? If the photo wins, who takes the prize? And
 so on.

Well, although technically possible to print, I do not exclude the

Not really a problem for a calendar. You have the back side available

And it's not like saying CC-BY-SA or compatible would be a good move.
There are other perfectly good licenses like the Free Art License which
are equivalent, and we should not be banning.

We are also giving a strong signal for free licenses, even those we may
like less by not discriminating them on the contest.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Similar banner?

2012-09-01 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Nkansah,

something that might be more interesting, is using the fact that a lot of
people will participate. The people who will participate, have shown some
interest in Wikimedia. We usually send them a message on their talkpage,
asking them to fill out a questionnaire - /after/ the contest. You might be
able to do the same with an announcement of your national winners, and do a
call to participate in Wikimedia Ghana at the same time.

Lodewijk

2012/9/1 Tomasz W. Kozłowski odder.w...@gmail.com

 Hi Nkansah,
 thanks for the message.

We achieve that through the CentralNotice feature available for Meta
 administrators http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CentralNotice. You can
read all about this notice system, and also see the currently running
 campaigns at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralNotice
 (marked with a green background).

Setting up a CentralNotice campaign does not require too much work
once you learn a bit about the software behind it. Unfortunately for
the planning Wikimedia chapter for Ghana (but probably more
fortunately for the readers of Wikipedia), the usage of CentralNotice
is rather limited, only to important notices for the readers of the
projects or for the community itself.

The usage guidelines for CentralNotice are available at
 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines.

 Hope that helps!

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Automated voting/screening

2012-08-31 Thread Lodewijk
Hi,

another solution I've heard is setting up a special wiki for this
(temporarily), using instant Commons to get all relevant images, and using
the tools that they used for POTY.

Does that make any sense at all?

 Nuno,

Thanks for the code. It looked promising, but unfortunately I'm not a
programmer and the final product never arrived, and I think we'll have
to go manual at this point.

To convert your system to our minimum requirements, we'd have to take
 your single person system and
 A. Randomly select, 50 or so photos, and have one person rate these, say
 1-5.
 B. Store these results
 C. give a new screener another 50 or so photos, and store these results,
 and
 D. do this so 100,000 photos get rated at least 3 times each, then finally
 E. Average all the result for each pic.

We would need some more time to get this turned into a gadget and the
toolserver has been a bit slow for the backend part. I am travelling so
unfortunately can't finish with a gadget by today. :(

Anyway, I am not sure how practical it is to have ratings for 100,000
photos (each!) x 3 times, so I think we need a simplified process for the
 US.

I was thinking we'd have people nominate photos into another category or
something. If there was a way to track which batch of photos have been
looked through for nomination, that would be great, and not sure the best
way (if any) to do that. Is this a good idea? can someone help set it up?

With a nominated set of photos (not sure how many), then a voting tool
would be useful, and number of photos manageable.

 Thoughts?

 Cheers,
 Katie

Obviously some bells and whistles would have been nice, but that would
have worked. Unfortunately it just never got that far.

If anybody can deliver that in working order before Sept. 10, please
 let me know!

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Question about links in Upload Campaign

2012-08-31 Thread Lodewijk
Hi David,

unfortunately it is not possible it seems to link from the wizard. However,
most monument lists contain links to the upload wizard, which will carry
the identifier. So I would like to suggest to as much as possible tell
people to /first/ look up their monument, and use the link behind that.

Best,
Lodewijk

 Hi,

I'm trying to add a link on the Upload Campaign for Panama so that
users can look an ID up in the list of monuments. That would be a link
to a wiki page but I don't see where to put it:
 1. I tried inserting a href=...see here/a into the text for the ID
 field
 2. There's another field named Page name with text for the ID field
label. $1 is replaced with the language code but it doesn't look like
the text inside the page is wiki-processed so you get to see all the
wiki markup instead of the links

Does anybody has any idea of what to do here? Has someone tried that
 in any other campaign?

Yes, it is all resolved. Please note that the opening is not so critical as

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Largest contest?

Hi,

Geograph is not a contest (it is a project, but you can't win something
with it afaik), so we don't have to worry about that. The Guinness Book of
World Records has a number in the 120k as the largest - we definitely beat
that. We had 168k by the way, not 188k. The only contest that I know that
comes close is the Metro Photo Challenge. (from the international news
paper)

 Hi,

Has anyone worked out how many images we need for this to be the world's
largest photography contest? I know we got 188,000 last year, and the
Geograph is now over 3 million, but I don't know whether there are any
 contests larger than the Geograph.

I think we have a good chance of it being the largest competition of one
month's duration, and it would be interesting to know what is currently the
 most multinational contest.

*Participants in world?s largest photo contest -- Wiki Loves Monuments 2012
-- will upload images under free license for use on Wikipedia.*

*U.S. participants join Wikipedians in more than 30 countries to document
historic sites, monuments, and cultural heritage.*

San Francisco -- August 29, 2012 -- Wikipedians around the world will
participate in the world?s largest photo contest, Wiki Loves Monuments
2012, from September 1st through 30th. Thousands of volunteers in more than
30 countries will upload photos of historic sites throughout the month,
making hundreds of thousands of photos available under a free license on
Wikipedia?s image database, Wikimedia Commons (
 http://commons.wikimedia.org
 ).

In last year?s contest, 5,000 photographers from 18 European countries
uploaded more than 168,000 photos. This year?s contest will have
significantly greater participation, including the United States and many
non-European countries for the first time. Volunteer Wikipedians organize
the contest in each country, with the winning photos from national contests
considered by an international jury in late October. The international jury
will announce the top-ten international photos and the overall best picture
 winner in early December.

?There are millions of historically and culturally significant monuments
and buildings around the world, though most of them still have no
freely-available images on the Internet,? said Lodewijk Gelauff, one of the
founders of the first Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest in 2010. ?Wiki
Loves Monuments is an important way for volunteers around the world to
showcase the cultural heritage in their countries and share these images
 with everyone through Wikipedia.?

The photos will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under a free license, so
they can be used by anybody, for any purpose, as long as the photographer
is credited. Many of the photos will appear in Wikipedia, the world?s
largest encyclopedia, and all will be available to download at no cost.

?In the U.S., anybody can photograph any of the 87,000 sites on the
National Register of Historic Places for this contest,? said Peter Ekman,
 national coordinator

I see that you fixed the names of the cities in Serbia when I click on
Browse by campaign, so, I don't see the question marks anymore (good
job!). But, the problem is that only the first 7 characters of a city name

My other suggestion would be that you leave all the names in latin

travelling through Serbia could have troubles with the cyrillic alphabet.

Thanks a lot, you've done a really great job so far!

Every ghanaian who'll upload photos during the contest can read the

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Is Ghana taking part?

2012-08-26 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Rexford,

Ghana is not listed there with a link because I haven't been able to find a
website for WLM Ghana where it is very clear for participants how to
participate in the relevant local language(s) - in your case English I
believe. As soon as that is available, I'm happy to add it.

Best,
Lodewijk

Ghana has about 50 items listed in the db of the WLM as per this page:

 database/Statisticshttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Statistics

 statisticsstcountry=gh**format=htmllimit=0http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/api/api.php?action=statisticsstcountry=ghformat=htmllimit=0

However, I don't find Ghana listed on http://www.wikilovesmonuments.**
 org/contest/ http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/contest/ in the section
 of participating countries.

Is Ghana really taking part in this year's event?

 Tell me more...

 Rexford

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Google Maps plugin for Wordpress

2012-08-25 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Andy:

Basically the same answer as last year: if anyone is willing to develop the
same for OSM (or has developed it and wants to describe) it is all up to
the local team to make the choice. We primarily want to make sure the
option of showing a map is there.

Lodewijk

Can this use OpenStreetMap instead of Google Maps?

 Hello all,
it has come to my attention (although I cannot find a mailing list
thread about it /yet/) that it was suggested that we should have a
Google Maps plugin for Wordpress displaying maps for a certain region
(a country/province/county/even municipality), with data being loaded
 from our erfgoed database.

This being said, I have to admit that I am no good programmer, so I'd
like to point you to an existing example of such a solution, which was
developed last year by Nuno Tavares for use in the 2011 WLM in
 Portugal -- see http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/monumentos.php.
From the source code I can see that the maps are being loaded in a
frame (iframe /) with the help of a PHP script; but taking all the
technical details aside, this is a great tool with a wonderful
potential to be used on the national sites of the participating
 countries.

So, my question here is: have you heard of such a plugin (it's always
safe to ask, I presume :-)? If it doesn't exist yet, is there a
volunteer here who might be willing to spend some time developing it?
(I have no idea how hard it might be to create it.) What do you think
about such a tool -- would you, as a national WLM organiser, use it on
your website? Please let me know!

 Thanks,
 Tomasz
