[Wikimediaindia-l] Inviting Wikimedians to OpenStreetMap Asia conference in Bengaluru Nov 17-18

2018-11-07 Thread Arun Ganesh
Dear all,

Many will already be aware of the new maps available on the wiki -
Wikimedia Maps [1] which are created using data from the crowdsourced map
data project - OpenStreetMap [2] that opens up possibilities like truly
multiingual open maps [3] and geovisualizations [4] on the wiki.

The OpenStreetMap mapping community in Asia is organizing a conference in
Bengaluru next week - State of the Map Asia [5] at the beautiful Indian
Institute of Management Bangalore campus on the weekend of Nov 17-18.

Participants includes scholarships recipients from the region sharing their
stories of using the crowdsource map project for various initiatives and is
highly relevant to Wikimedians interested in maps, data, visualizations,
civic activism, street photographs.

There will be quite a few Wikimedians attending and there is a session on
Wikimedia Maps by Naveen Francis. There will be plenty of opportunities to
have BoFs on the overlap between Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap communities in
Asia.

Student discounts are available. Please register before November 12th and
do share in relevant open source circles that will help grow the open
knowledge community. You can follow updates on twitter [6]

Any likely customization can only have to be done by the user in their
common.js . Not sure if even that is doable right now.

To match the Govt reference map of correct boundaries, one would need to
hide disputed borders, and show extra claimed areas as a part of India.
This is not easy to do on the tiles and the problem has been explained in
detail on the task: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T113008#4177170

To have this customization built into the mapframe map would need the help
of the WMF engineers on the best way to implement. Have shared my demo on
phabricator, so will just have to wait.

To do this one would need to render the global map for each language in
multiple versions, one showing the neutral POV as is done currently, and
one customized for India, China etc where the local laws might require
differing representations of the disputed areas.

Its unlikely the WMF will support such a feature, as the maps will no
longer be neutral and will also significantly multiply the resources needed
to maintain so many versions.

There are some hacky solutions for this like overlaying the map with extra
lines that show and hide boundaries on the client side to get the desired
end result. This is a bit of 'map make up' but could very well be
sufficient to avoid any unneeded controversy regarding the map borders.

Tried to make a simple example to demo this, you can see the end result
here: https://jsfiddle.net/planemad/oeeLmg1j/1/

[Wikimediaindia-l] Indic maps OpenStreetMap

2015-12-18 Thread Arun Ganesh
Ramya just posted a summary of map feature names in Indic languages [1] on
the OpenStreetMap Project which powers the new Wikimedia Maps [2].

In India, the Kannada community has been the most active by far adding over
32,000 feature lablels and have even created an interactive map of the
world [3] which is the first of its kind for any Indic language. Hindi is a
distant second with over 2,000 feature names.

If you are interested to view maps in your language try out the
multilingual map tool [4]. You can also make quick maps using existing OSM
data using Overpass [5] and export the data.

Localized maps like this are still largely experimental and need a lot of
work. It would be great to see more Wikimedians involved in leveraging this
open map data for local Wiki projects. One can contribute to the map by
editing http://osm.org

Hit me up if anyone would like help with OpenStreetMap. i have been mapping
for over 8 years now and know the ecosystem fairly well.

Compared to the huge amount of subscribers this list has, the number of
participants has probably not exceeded 20 in the last one year.

This indicates that the discussions taking place here are really not
conducive for any sort of community participation. Lets continue to blame
CIS, WMF, US dollars, fat salaries, vested interests, experiments and
everyone else for what is our collective failure to set an example of how a
community works.

If we are looking at any sort of unity, lets first pick out our own faults
before pointing the finger at others.

"Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own
shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the
strength and succor you want is within yourselves. Therefore, make your own
future." - *Swami Vivekananda*

About a year ago there was some interest in creating a Mediawiki India
group but met with opposition from the chapter.

Is there currently a restriction on creating user groups independent of the
chapter? It would be good to know what this is?
Do I need permission from the chapter to start a Wikipedia editors club in
my neighbourhood?

Thank you Ansuman,

The Wikimaps Atlas is a an ambitious endeavor to create possibly the
largest repository of ready to use free maps for the world and fix the huge
shortage of maps that currently plague many Wikimedia projects. Please read
our project page for full details on what we plan to achieve:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Wikimaps_Atlas

On behalf of Hugo as well, I would like to thank everyone from the Indian
community for taking the time to review the proposal, providing feedback
and your valuable support. Its been a lengthy dream to do this and we are
really excited to get this level of support from everyone including the WMF
to get this project off the ground.

With the support of this grant, both Hugo and me who have spent
considerable time creating maps for WIkipedia, will be able to take a break
from our working life to dedicate our effort to develop this resource. We
plan to start work only in March, and you can hear more on the progress and
the inputs we will require from the community in the coming months.

Just a reminder to all, do apply by Tuesday midnight (2nd Dec 23:59) as we
would like to expedite the travel arrangements due to the holiday rush
during Dec 27-30.

Most convenient entry point into Dharamshala is Delhi, from where overnight
volvo services are available.

Closest mainline train station in Pathankot PTC / Pathankot Cantt PTKC
which is 4 hours away by bus.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Request for a mediawki hackathon during Congress Everywhere at Dharamshala

2013-12-01 Thread Arun Ganesh
Dear Indian Wikimedians,

Those of you in the hacker community would be aware that the 30th Chaos
Communication Congress will be live streamed at a special event in a
himalayan hackerspace called Ghoomakad [1] between Dec 27-30.

Since it will be unique gathering of technologists in this remote region,
it is also an ideal opportunity to conduct a mediawiki hackathon/wikimedia
outreach that will be able to target a culturally diverse group of people
including the Tibetan exile community from Dharamshala which is 10 km away.

As one of the residents of the hackerspace and an active Wikimedian, I have
prepared a proposal to the Chapter to provide for travel and accommodation
scholarships to 4 Wikimedia volunteers who would like to lead and support a
hackathon in the village. You can see the detailed proposal and budget
breakdown here:

http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Grants/Congress_Everywhere_Mediawiki_hackathon

Since time is short, those interested to lead the hackathon or conduct
outreach in the local schools can already apply for the travel scholarship
now:
http://bit.ly/1hqFxyD

PS: Do note that this grant is pending approval by the Chapter EC and the
scholarship is subject to that decision. In the meantime do share this with
any community member you might know in the Delhi/North area. Queries on the
proposal are also invited on the talk page of the proposal.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Request to review the Wikimaps Atlas Grant

2013-10-18 Thread Arun Ganesh
Dear community,
User:Yug[1] from the Graphic Labs and I, User:Planemad[2] from the Indian
community, have put together a comprehensive IEG proposal to improve all
the base maps used on WIkimedia projects with updated cartographic
conventions and accuracy based on research.

The output will be a large set of editable vector maps, research
documentation and a comprehensive map creation workflow that anyone can
reuse.

The total grant request is for an amount of USD 10500, which will allow
both of us to work on this project full time for a period of 3 months. The
grant also includes a budget to hire external consultants where required to
accomplish the stated goals.

You can view the proposal and provide your valuable feedback/endorsement
here:

PS: This is the first step of the much larger Wikimaps project that aims to
be the open source map engine that brings together Wikidata, Commons and
Openstreetmap.

For anyone who does not know what the Wikimedia India - WIkimedia

Let me (take the effort) to skip through the many lines of diplomacy. What
I understand:

   - Bunch of coders want to form their own group so that the coders can
focus on.. coding and not going through endless email threads like this one.

I support!

PS: I'm no longer with WMF. But if there's one thing I learnt, creating
things is faster and more fun than trying to get consensus. And we
desperately need more people who can develop, minus the bullshit, or we are
never getting out of this well.

I can talk from personal experience. I was one of the first people to start
adding coordinates to articles of Indian places, sometime around 2007/8
when wikiproject geographical coordinates started picking up steam. There
were lot of villages in Tamil Nadu, where I blindly picked the location
shown on google maps (as there really was no other source at that time).
After an initial mapping spree, I gave up on the task because it was too
tedious at that time. This is roughly the same time I discovered the
openstreetmap project and realized my mistake with copying blindly from
existing maps.

The coordinates I had added may have possibly been incorrect (I really dont
know and there was no way for me to verify them). But by now the error has
already gone back into google maps and the position stands validated
because its the same coords on wikipedia.

Imagine the irony if map services with the correct position is now seen as
being inaccurate because wikipedia states otherwise. Just like article
citations, even coordinates must have some indication of the source. The
current system is just faulty.

Umm no, you could get coordinates however you want, but from what i've seen
people tend to rely blindly on google because its the least effort.

Ultimately, users contributing coordinates need to make sure that the
coords they are adding is accurate. The assumption that google maps is a
trusted map source is highly problematic. I just randomly checked the
coords for an article - Puzhal [1], a suburb of Chennai. The coordinates in
the article exactly match the the location in gmaps. How did that happen?

Anyone trying to verify the accuracy of coordinates in wikipedia will find
that gmaps shows the exact same position. Its a feedback loop which
validates errors thrown into it. Not good.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimapia switches to CC-BY-SA

2012-06-19 Thread Arun Ganesh
The short reply is, if you dont like google and their terms of service,
dont use it! Its a little unfair to use someone's service and then call
them villain if you did not read or like the fine print.

The primary issue with wikimapia is that google derived data is mixed with
direct user contributions that are copyright free. Because there is no way
to separate the two, the whole database is a mess of free and non free data
of varying accuracy.

Coordinates based on google maps has already made its way into wikipedia
articles thanks to the geocoding tool[1]. There is now no way to check for
accuracy or authenticity of this data. What was the source of these
coordinates? A field survey or user knowledge, or blatant copying from a
copyright map? One will never know, nor is there anyway to easily fix the
mess.

Wikimapia is a tool for geocoding - allowing someone to derive coordinate
values from some source, in this case, copyright satellite imagery or maps
. So along with imagery rectification and map mistakes, you will also
inherit license restrictions with any derivative work.

All the content on wikimapia will continue to remain on wikimapia with no
option to download or export the data. That will violate the google maps
service policy on which it was built..

10.1.3 Restrictions against Data Export or Copying.

So this would be placemark text descriptions and not the geographical
coordinate data. that would make sense. In any case, its a very misleading
announcement of no real value to wikipedia.

And the text itself has been added from various sources and cannot be
considered clean. In many instances you will find text and images from
wikipedia articles in there. So they were actually holding cc-by-sa content
i their database under a cc-by-nc all this while. The map data will
continue to be copyright as far as I see it.

Thanks Arjuna, this is a very interesting development. And there is
something quite not right about this announcement. Wikimapia maps are
derived from data given by google through its api. The derived data
inherits google copyright and is not cc-by-sa compatible. Moreover, the
blog mentions the data is under cc-by-sa, but I dont think there is any
mechanism to download the map data from wikimapia. I'm going to raise this
on the openstreetmap mailing lists to figure out if this is legal.

It seems to me that this is not, but will update you guys after I dig a

And i'm not very sure how this will ride out in the coming years with more
emphasis on non wikipedia projects like wikisource, wikitionary etc.
People are soon going to call themselves wikimedians instead of wikipedians
and more confusion will ensue.

So the government has labeled the Urdu wikipedia as propaganda by Pakistan.
It seems possible that most of the Urdu community are predominately from
Pakistan and bias could have crept in to the articles. I'm curious to know

Hi cbrao, you can always discuss such edits with the user directly and
settle things amicably. I have left a note on his talk page [1] to discuss
the issue with you.

It is completely possible that the user has no clue that his edits are
creating a problem and it would be unfair to take any action without

Having spent quite a bit time on the field doing user research on mobile
technology use in India, I can vouch for its amazing reach here. I have
been to desolate villages in
kutchwhere you will find
people living in mud houses, intermittent power supply,
smartphones with a 3g connection and sharing poetry with friends in their
community on facebook. And these are people who have not even passed high
school.

These are amazing things happening in this country and now is a golden
opportunity to capitalize on that to benefit the wikimedia movement. These
are worthwhile experiments and I look forward to seeing a lot more in terms
of innovative ideas to engage people and bring them together for a
worthwhile cause.

Hi Theo, If we are trying something in India that chaps in SF have not
concentrated on, i would not necessarily label it as a negative approach.
Gut instinct tells me that fb, twitter outreach might be more successful
here as we are riding the social wave with people just discovering and
exploring the new world that smartphones and 3g open out to them.

These platforms can easily extend the social collaboration that goes on in
wikipedia to an extended audience if done properly. What i think would be
useful way of measuring these things is to release statistics monthly on
the number of retweets or shares that could indicate the actual reach of
these outreach efforts. Util then however, this is nothing to boast about.

Thanks Adethya. While dealing with ideas, the instrument of rights control
is patents and design registrations. I'm afraid only the text of your idea
itself is covered by the creative commons license and not the idea or
thought which cannot be copyright. Hope that clears your doubt.

It is indeed unfortunate that you feel someone stole your idea, but the
bright side is that if this idea is something that can benefit the
community at large and help improve the education in the country, then the
real winner is our economy :)

I am curious about the creative commons connection though. did you publish
your idea somewhere under a cc-by-sa license? If you can share what exactly
the license issue is, I would be happy to help, since I have dealt with a
lot of copyright violations of my own work.

No problem, I totally understood why I could have been misunderstood. I
myself am scared to post on the India lists because it feels like I'm about
to enter combat with unknown assailants who strike wherever you are not
looking. These lists are meant to be for discussions on topics of our
interest and building online relationships with fellow contributors. If we
cant make it fun then what's the point of contributing?

Regarding the bug, I feel at sometime a decision should be taken to stop
active support for old browsers. We are still spending valuable development
time and effort on fixing issues such as these when we could be
concentrating on building stuff for the future. I can understand if there
are people using ie7 out of their own will, but from previous cases, it
does seem like a good chunk of users are in offices because of outdated IT
policy. The IT policy has to eventually see reason and change, so why cant
it be now? It will just make the world a better place :)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikitech-l] Introduction - Arun

2012-05-04 Thread Arun Ganesh
Thanks Sundar and Logic, I was hoping to send a more informal intro here :)
To give you guys more details, I will be working with the foundation l10n
engineering team[1] four days a week as a user experience designer. During
my 6 month contract, I will be required to look into usability issues and
design a more user friendly interface for language tools, which are
currently not very simple to use for a complete newbie.

The Goal: Lower the entry barrier for non-english speakers to start using
and contributing to wikimedia projects.

Since work for the foundation is essentially public work and has an impact
on all of us, everyone is requested to keep track of our progress and give
feedback on our outputs to make it better. I'm still trying to figure out
what the best communication medium with everyone is, I think these lists
are too noisy and is ignored by a good bunch of people (including me). If
anyone has better ideas on what would be an appropriate channel to get
feedback on our outputs, please suggest.

You can track our work and progress in the following ways:
1) Current sprint progress and tasks [2]
2) Monthly updates and milestones [3]
2) Sprint demos every 2nd tuesday at 2030 IST (Next: May 15) [4]
3) Localisation team IRC office hours every 3rd wednesday of the month [5]

Logic is a regular at these events, and it would be great to see more faces
turn up and see the work behind the scenes to make wikipedia better. Its
also a great opportunity for those wanting to get involved in mediawiki
development to interact with some awesome coders and help you get started.

For my work, I will be needing a small group of indic language wikipedians
who are not familiar with English to get feedback on designs. I'm going to
rely on Logic for helping me out on this, if you can read this mail and you
know someone else, you can let srikanth know. I'll collect the names from
him later (thanks srikanth :))

I will probably not be posting anything technical here again. I think the
best is to have a wiki page and keep discussions/feedback there. I will
announce that system shortly.
Cheers,
Arun

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Question about outreach sessions

2012-04-09 Thread Arun Ganesh
While doing wikipedia/osm workshops, I make it a point to start with the
"Why am I doing this and what do I gain by being here" section. This lets
everyone understand what the open movement and community is about, and what
I personally gained/gain by being a part of it. After this, I let everyone
know that those who would like personal attention and help can move to the
front so that its easy for me to attend to them.

Personally, this has worked very well and also made people more interactive
rather than become a classroom type session.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Outreach at Itanagar

2012-04-03 Thread Arun Ganesh
I had the good fortune of accompanying Ashwin, where I conducted workshops
on the OpenStreetMap project [1]. It was a unique learning as well as a fun
experience to do this along with him.

These kind of outreach efforts, especially to less connected areas like the
northeast are extremely important and I hope more such events take place
for the students of that region. From what we could gauge, the level of
exposure to latest technological trends and especially the open source
movement is fairly limited. There seems to be no form of tech community or
any kind of activities taking place in the entire region with the possible
exception of IIT Guwahati. It was particularly sad to see that such a large
number of young and bright students who are so eager to learn have
absolutely no one to mentor them on the possibilities out there with
today's technology.

Ashwin and I managed to build a very good relationship with the students at
both NERIST and NIT Arunachal Pradesh. Apart from the wikipedia and osm
workshops, we also made sure we exposed the philosophies behind these open
projects and what FOSS is all about. I feel its our responsibilities as
ambassadors for these kind of projects to make sure that people can make
the connect between sharing, openness and the subsequent impact that this
has on each of our own lives, and not just limiting ourselves to 'how to
edit wikipedia'.

My personal opinion is that our outreach efforts should be less about power
point presentations and more about educating others on why we do this.
After all I'm sure a good portion of us wikipedians who love what we do
never learnt any of this by sitting through a lecture. We learnt it because
we were curious and somewhere found some meaning in taking the effort to
learn.

-Arun

PS: Is there any particular place where there is a collection of notes from
the different wiki academies in India? One understands a lot by conducting
these workshops and it would be nice if I could share that knowledge so
someone who wants to do it for the first time can be prepared to the kind
of questions and issues he will face. This will make it so much easier for
more people to give talks in other places.

This is the best way forward, the IT admin of colleges, cafes always have
the option of overriding default filter lists. Students/colleges should be
encouraged to get contact the admins and get commons/wikipedia unblocked
and have free unrestricted access just like the local intranet. it will
encourage using wikipedia as a reference and more students to contribute.

I remember i needed to pay to browse the web at my engg college. i had made
a request to make wikipedia free for access, but back at the time in 2005,
the admins did not take it seriously, times might have changed now.

I dug up the Indian fair use law and found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Fair_use#reproduction_in_a_newspaper

In this case, the aircraft had crashed and it was no longer possible to get
such a photograph, but can a newspaper otherwise just pick up any photo off
the internet and use it under fair use clause just to avoid paying
licensing fees of the photograph?

Thanks Abhi, i just got it done successfully after clicking a series of

The first transaction attempt was through an ICICI PG, and although it had
an option for maestro cards, it asked for info which is not available on the

Can mailman not be configured to automatically reject such mails? There has

There's a slightly more nuttier scheme brewing in the south, where 900,000
laptops are going to be distributed to students next year [1]. Let me see if
i can access someone in the TN govt regarding this.

The malayalam wikipedia community never fails to impress, awesome initiative
guys!
Do see if you can get access to the actual GIS shapefiles from the
government departments. It will make the effort a lot more scalable and
allow superimposing other thematic data easier.

Nonetheless, its a great way to become a good at inkscape, thats how i did
it :)

The picture of map of India with the chakra placed in the middle in

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] India Government plans to "regulate" blogs and user generated content.

2011-03-11 Thread Arun Ganesh
This is such a shame. And once again, the government's favorite line makes
an appearance in the draft:

*3.2 (j) threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of
India,
friendly relations with foreign states, or or public order or causes
incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence or prevents
investigation of any offence or is insulting any other nation.
*
*
*
I was left wondering what happens if the passing of this bill causes large
scale public unrest leading to people comitting cognisable offenses?*

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] India map and indian laws

2011-02-15 Thread Arun Ganesh
As someone who created many of the Indian maps on wikipedia, this is a
serious issue which needs a decision as it has been in the gray for quite a
while. I have stopped my contribution of Indian maps ever since i realized
that my work could have legal repercussions. For now, all the maps come with
an explanation of the depiction of the borders and a disclaimer that it may
not conform to local laws.

Specimen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:India_map_blank.svg

This is an issue which requires someone with sound legal knowledge to solve,
something for the chapter to take up. Let us not forget that we are creating
a repository of knowledge, if wikipedia ever hid the truth for the sake of
being politically correct, the whole project is pointless.
