[Wikimediaindia-l] West Bengal Wikimedians User Group is now a partner of Wikidocumentaries!

2022-01-02 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

Happy New Year to you all!

We are happy to inform you all that the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group
has been announced as a partner of Wikidocumentaries project along with
different open knowledge organisations, GLAM institutes and academic
institutions of Finland. Wikidocumentaries, as you might know, is a project
by Open Knowledge Finland, which combines different aspects of a topic from
different platforms including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons,
FlickR, Europeana, OSM etc. into one place and provides a comprehensive
display of knowledge to the readers. The link of the website is here -
https://wikidocumentaries-demo.wmflabs.org

You may have noticed earlier, that the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group
has engaged with the Wikidocumentaries project for more than 2 years now.
The tables listing monuments in Wiki Loves Monuments in India competition
have been providing a Wikidocumentaries links for each monuments for the
last 2 years, using which photographers can upload photographs from that
website directly into the competition. Bengali Wikisource has also provided
Wikidocumentaries links in different namespaces for more than a year now.
Wiki Loves Butterfly has very recently started to provide their links too
in their tables of butterflies.

WikidataCon 2021 also had a presentation showcasing the above
collaborations and some idea-level ambitious discussions to integrate in
more potential areas in near future. Hope this year, our partnership will
start bringing those ideas to reality.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
(On behalf of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia Affiliates Environmental Sustainability Covenant

2021-12-18 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

In response to the climate crisis, the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group
has joined hands with other affiliates from around the world and committed
to a cross-affiliate initiative to reduce the environmental impact of the
Wikimedia movement. The initiative can be looked at as one of the first
steps to implement Movement Strategy Recommendation #1.8
-
"*While we grow and become more sustainable as a Movement, we will also
align our practices to support the environmental sustainability of our
planet.*"

The user group took part in drafting a document which we call as Wikimedia
Affiliates Environmental Sustainability Covenant

and became one of the first signatories of the agreement along with
Wikimedians for Sustainable Development, Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia
France, Wikimedia South Africa, Wikimedia Italia, Wikimedia UK and
Wikimedians of Tamazight User Group.

The agreement till now is as follows -

   1. Affiliates commit to reducing their carbon footprint through a
variety of measures, including but not limited to:
  - drastically limiting the number of kerosene-based flights taken by
affiliate staff and representatives and community members,
through measures
  such as
 - caps for flights taken on behalf of the affiliate,
 - increased technical and organisational support for remote events,
 - travel policies that discourage flights over other means of
transport and that encourage the use of public transportation, and/or
 - travel policies that require compensation for the environmental
 cost of air travel,
  - switching to renewable energy for their electricity consumption,
  where possible,
  - divesting their financial investments from carbon-intensive
  industries,
  - when engaging in carbon offset programmes, supporting only the
planting of native trees in uninhabited areas and not using offsets as an
  ‘excuse’ for their carbon emissions,
  - implementing other practices listed below.
Affiliates related to Most Affected People and Areas shall only have
limited responsibilities in this regard, and shall receive support from
   other affiliates to meet them.
   2. Affiliates call on other Wikimedia Movement entities, including and
especially the Wikimedia Foundation, to follow their example, specifically
concerning the sustainable operation of the Wikimedia Foundation’s data
   centres.
   3. Affiliates commit to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the
coverage of the climate crisis on Wikimedia projects.
   4. Affiliates commit to regularly (at least yearly) sharing their
experiences adhering to this covenant to inspire each other and others
inside and outside of the Wikimedia Movement.

As an affiliate with very limited capacity and resources and from a
developing nation, the user group will have technical and infrastructural
limitations implementing many of the clauses, but during the next AGM which
is going to happen in mid January 2022, a travel policy will be formulated
in compliance with this agreement. As before and with agreement with the
covenant, the UG will also keep committing to actively promote remote
virtual events including conferences, workshops, meetups whenever a
physical event can be avoided or deemed unnecessary. The UG will also
continue to support projects which focus on digital conservation of nature
like Wiki Loves Butterfly etc. There might be some more plans which can
come up gradually as our commitment to the agreement.

You can learn about this initiative presented by different speakers at
different virtual conferences from this year.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Announcement of SAARC Movement Charter selector and elections

2021-10-12 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello Abbad,

Since the meeting was called at the last moment and during the month of
festival season in India, I guess, majority of the affiliates couldn't show
up in the meeting. Nevertheless, Suyash Dwivedi is a good choice.

Now, how will the affiliates engage the selector to select their preferred
candidates? What will be the process to reflect the decision of all the
affiliates?

Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] Review starts for WLM India 2021

2021-10-06 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello,

>From today, WLM India team will start the review process of the
photographs submitted
in the competition
.

There was a delay of 6 days in initiating the review process because the
judging tool which we use, had some major issues and was not allowing us to
log in the tool. The developers had rolled out few fixes and the tool is
working now.

Like previous years, the organizers will review first 2-3 rounds to filter
out images with obvious issues like out of scope, presence of watermarks or
timestamp, bad tilt, blurry images, over-processed images etc and then
forward the filtered images to the jury members who will take another 2-3
rounds to finish the review and declare results. As we have started a week
late to review, we might finish a week late compared to previous years.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Updates: Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India

2021-09-12 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

We have reached the 12th day of WLM 2021 and now have around 1200 images of
monuments i.e. around 100 images per day, which is kind of lower than
previous years and which is expected considering the COVID-19 movement
restrictions. The organizers are currently filtering out poor quality
images, out of scope images, images with watermarks and images which lack
sufficient documentation to identify monuments.

We now have totally moved to a static map based navigation of monuments - see
here
.
If you now click on the states and UTs in the map or in the box, it will
direct you to specific pages for the monuments situated there like this
page for West Bengal
.
Thanks to Krishna for
patiently working
on
the svg maps of all states and UTs. We intend to make the navigation more
granular district wise like this page

for districtwise non-designated temples of Tamil Nadu, but it is beyond our
capacity to work on all districts of India.

The reason we have not worked towards dynamic map navigation this year is
because coordinates are missing for a large percentage of Indian monuments
on Wikidata and without the coordinates, dynamic map will not deliver the
expected impact. It is also beyond our capacity to work on coordinates of
all monuments of India and thus your involvement is needed.

>From our side, we are totally focusing on monuments of West Bengal. Indrajit
Das is creating a database
of gaves located in different cemeteries of West Bengal and they are
getting included in our lists here
.
Till now, more than 2000 graves are included in these lists here and it
will grow throughout the year. Simultaneously, we are also filling gaps of
our existing tables like this one

etc. Our focus on West Bengal will continue for the next couple of years
until we cover all monuments located there, which are pre-documented in
different sources. Considering our limited capacity, we will only focus on
optimal categorization on Commons for other states from our side assuming
that the rest of the work will be taken care of by experienced volunteers
from respective states sooner or later.

The 3-members jury team

has been formed after their confirmation. The jury members remain the same
as last year. Their decision will be final and irrevocable and the
organizing team will have no influence over the jury process just like
previous years. The entire review process will be completed within the last
day of October as we did previously.

See you and amazing photographs there in WLM,

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
(On behalf of WLM 2021 India organizing team

Hello all,

We are excited to announce a 3-months long proofread competition which will
run on Bangla Wikisource from September 1 to November 30, 2021 as a result
of an ongoing GLAM collaboration between the Two Centuries of Indian Print
(2CIP) project of the British Library (BL) and the West Bengal Wikimedians
User Group (WBG). This is the second proofread competition under the GLAM
project, the first one happened in March-April.

The event page of the competition is here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gwen
(in Bangla)
The GLAM event page is here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gt5i (also in

Under the project, 2CIP officials will be uploading public domain Bangla
books from their collection on Wikimedia Commons and our volunteers will
take care of the rest of the work from indexing, proofreading, transcluding
etc. on Wikisource along with building their data on Wikidata. The prizes
to the top 5 winners for this competition will be sent by WBG and BL will
send digital certificates to each one of them.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India starts in 2 days!

2021-08-30 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

We are excited to announce that the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group
 is going to
organize Wiki Loves Monuments

this year again in the month of September. The organizing team

remains the same. We have a list of news to share.

   - Like previous years, we are adding more and more data about Indian
monuments, both for designated and non-designated ones, on Wikidata
and the WLM
   lists of monuments

are fetched from there. If you find monuments from your locality or
district or state that are present on Wikidata but are not reflected on our
   list

,
please let us know, so that we can include them.

   - We are introducing one more way to upload photographs of monuments
   this year. In this page

,
you will get a map of India with states and UTs in it and if you click on
your desired state or UT, it will automatically direct you to the
respective upload wizard buttons. Our 3 other options to upload in the
tables designated for monuments, i.e. through Upload Wizard,
Wikidocumentaries and WLM maps tools remain the same as the previous year.

   - This year, most probably, the Wikimedia Commons app
    will
support WLM and photographers can upload easily through their mobile
   devices.

   - The national prize money also remains the same as the previous year.
But we have two more special prizes this year. For details, please
visit this
   page

   .

   - Also the Monuments database
    has
   included

   our lists of monuments

from Commons this year, which will help a bot
    to crawl more
Indian monuments than before to do regular maintenance works. There are
still some bugs to resolve though.
   - We are contacting potential jury members for the national
competition. This
   page

will be updated as soon as we get confirmation from them.

A lot of efforts were taken to build structured databases related to Indian
monuments in the previous years. Still, most of our monuments lack
coordinates and it would be great if this gap can be filled up by the
community volunteers. Without coordinates, maps won't show the location of
the monuments and powerful tools cannot be utilized fully. If you start
adding coordinates or correcting faulty coordinates one at a time starting
from your locality, we might fill up the huge data gap one day. For
perspective, we have coordinates for more than 3000 Indian designated
monuments and still around 7000 designated monuments don't have them.

I would like to sincerely thank Krishna from the WLM international team;
André Costa and Jean-Frédéric from the Monuments database and Susanna Ånäs
from the Wikidocumentaries for partnering with us in different ways and
helping us execute our plans.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
(On behalf of Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India team)

2021-08-15 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Sorry, I had some audio issues which were fixed after almost 35 minutes
after starting the meeting and thus had a glitchy start. We found some time
to discuss a few things at the end though.

So, anyway, we will be at Building 1, Floor 4, Table 19 at the Community
Village space for most of the time of Wikimania. So, if you want to chat
with us and share feedback, we will be there, hopefully except during late
nights and early mornings. The link is here -

[Wikimediaindia-l] Bodh: a new tool for Wikidata lexicographical data

2021-06-27 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

We are happy to announce that a new tool ,
named Bodh, has been developed by Jay Prakash
, as a CIS-A2K
assignment, to add or modify statements for lexemes, senses and forms.
This tool presents lexicographical data in tabular format generated from
SPARQL queries or from manual lists. Users can switch whether to work on
lexeme proper, sense or form and add or modify statements there.

The idea of this tool was inspired by the one and only Magnus Manske's
 Tabernacle
which helps editors to add or modify
statements, labels, descriptions and aliases for Wikidata's entity data.

The tool is going to be documented here
. Users of this tool can
request for more features or report for bugs using this phabricator project
profile .

Happy editing!

Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] COVID-19 second wave and protection of our most valuable movement asset

2021-05-20 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

Few updates

34 COVID-19 kits have been sent till now to vulnerable community members.
More will be sent soon. There are logistical difficulties because of
lockdowns in different parts of the country and in Bangalore from where the
packages are being sent, which is causing some delay in delivery.

We are also trying to organize a lightweight online interaction space where
Wikimedians can talk, interact and share with each other. The first session
will be held on 22 May 2021 at around 7 pm IST, where Asaf will be our
primary guest. Please find the link here -

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Condition of a Wikimedian, arrested by UP Police

2021-05-17 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Kaartic,

I don't think Trust and Safety or WMF legal has any practical value here. I
can endorse Vikram's view from my experience, when I interacted with both
of the teams about another extremely controversial topic which might very
well hamper the safety of the entire Indian Wikimedia community and can
destroy the life and reputation of volunteers. Practically speaking, if any
Wikimedia content is deemed illegal as per the law of the country,
currently we are all vulnerable and there is no existing support structure
which can take any step to convince website hosts to find any solution or
prevent this kind of unfortunate situation or provide emergency legal
relief or take out the volunteers from PTSD.

Bodhisattwa

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Condition of a Wikimedian, arrested by UP Police

2021-05-08 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Praveenp,

First of all, thanks for your courage to bring this incident openly in the
mailing list. This was one of the most disturbing news from last year. The
overall incident of how Siddique was arrested and charged for sedition
while trying to report a gang rape case, how he was treated in the prison
and in the hospital was extremely distressing.

I personally always felt that individual Wikimedia volunteers are always in
an extremely vulnerable position. There is no legal support system present
in the Indian Wikimedia ecosystem to safeguard or prevent Wikimedia
volunteers from being harrassed by state or charged or arrested for any
controversial content present on Wikipedia. Although Sidheeq was not
charged for anything related to his Wikimedia work and to some people,
maybe his arrest has nothing to do with the Wikimedia community, but it
gives us a chance to think, what happens if this kind of incident happens
to any one of us with respect to any controversial content present on any
Wikimedia sites. I strongly feel that we need to build a good legal support
system sustainable enough to help volunteers in distress anytime anywhere
in India; the scope of such a support system can be defined or discussed,
but something should be there.

At present, as volunteers, we are so helpless that we can only pray that
everything will be fine someday automagically, but that is just to console
ourselves. The fact is we are too powerless to condemn the incident or
issue a statement or even bring this topic to the mailing list. Personally,
I feel helpless like everyone else. I just hope that someday this
discussion will help build a legal support system whom we can approach
while in distress.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] COVID-19 support for Indian volunteers

2021-04-30 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello Wikimedians,

We are all passing through a very difficult time as the second wave of
COVID-19 has hit hard throughout the country. It is a bitter and hard truth
that many of us have lost our loved ones, close friends, relatives,
neighbours already. Some of us have faced economic difficulties due to loss
of jobs, losses in businesses, huge hospitalization expenses etc.

In the midst of this crisis, a support program has been initiated to
provide some reliefs to our Wikimedia volunteers residing in India. The
program will support the following -

   1. Reimbursement of vaccination costs
   2. Sending of COVID-19 protection kits
   3. Counseling by experts

The support will be provided by CIS-A2K. The vaccination expenses will be
reimbursed from as early as today or tomorrow. The COVID-19 protection kits
will get couriered within a week or more, depending on various logistical
factors. The team will try to support the more vulnerable section of the
community first.

Volunteers are requested to fill up this Google Form to request for support
-
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScYcjEeuT7vUxP3NJg7KfIiZaude9IXLyCagsDarTx11J4ymA/viewform

Please note that all your personal raw information will be kept private and
will not be shared publicly with anybody. Only the persons from CIS-A2K who
will be sending you the support will get access to your information to
process your request. After 120 days of processing, your raw information
will be deleted or aggregated.

If you do not need this kind of support but you know some volunteers from
your community who are in dire need, you can nominate them too through this
form or mail the support team directly. Affiliate contacts and community
leaders are also kindly requested to help identify the volunteers who need
the support the most.

You can find more details about the support program here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_support_for_Wikimedians/India

The support team would also like to emphasise that,

   - there might be some delay in sending support as there are lockdowns in
different parts of the country and there is scarcity or non-availability of
   different items in the market,
   - there might be some unintentional or unexpected errors from the team,
as this is the first time, this kind of support is being set up for Indian
Wikimedia volunteers and the team does not have prior experience to deal
with this kind of global health situation before,
   - the team members are also facing the same critical situation like
everyone else; there are possibilities that they can become sick sooner or
later, which might hamper the support to some extent.

That's why, the team would like to request you to understand the
limitations and assume good faith that any failure to serve sometimes would
be due to situations beyond control.

If you want to contact us directly for any questions, concerns,
suggestions, help etc. you can mail us directly at w...@cis-india.org .

Let's join hands to overcome this situation.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

The TCIP project officials are uploading the public domain books under
their collection on Wikimedia Commons [4]. From the user group, we are
working on the next steps like renaming files, indexing, metadata related

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Food 2021 in India

2021-02-23 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

As Ananya already mentioned that just like WLM India, we already have a
plan to create a list of the Indian dishes. That might not materialise this
year, but we already started to gather resources and work on it. However,
we fully realize that this is almost impossible to complete all Indian
dishes considering the huge diversity of Indian cuisines. We can't do it
alone and we need all your help. It would be really helpful that you can
all help us prepare the list, just you all did for WLM India.

Again, the food list will be fetched from Wikidata. So, if the Wikidata
items of your local cuisine are improved, they will get reflected in the
list automatically.

The task is very simple

   - Create an item of a dish which is not there on Wikidata. If there is
already an item, start improving it.
   - Add P361   (part of) ==>
local cuisine name [For example: Hyderabadi mutton biryani
    ==> Hyderabadi cuisine
.] This will help us make lists
   of dishes as per cuisines.
   - Add P186 (material
used) ==> All the ingredients used to prepare the meal. This will help us
make lists of dishes as per major ingredients.
   - Add P18 (image) if there
is already an image on Wikimedia Commons.
   - Add P373 (commons
category) if there is already a category for that specific dish on
   Wikimedia Commons.

There are lots of other works, but these are the basic steps needed to
generate a list of dishes for now. Hope one day, we will find all the
mouth-watering dishes of India under one "restaurant" navbox. :-)

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] Submission Open for Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2021 until 24 January 2021

2020-12-25 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello everyone,

We are excited to announce that submission for session proposals has been
opened for Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2021, the upcoming online wiki-event
which is to be conducted from 19 – 21 February 2021 during the occasion of
International Mother Language Day. The submission will remain open until 24
January 2021.

You can submit your session proposals here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Wikimeet_India_2021/Submissions

A program team has been formed recently from highly experienced Wikimedia
volunteers within and outside India. It is currently under the process of
expansion to include more diversity in the team. The team will evaluate the
submissions, accept, modify or reject them, design and finalise the program
schedule by the end of January 2021. Details about the team will come soon.

*Guidelines for submissions:*
* The sessions will be on any Wikimedia related topics.
* Submissions are not restricted to India. Wikimedians from outside India
are also welcome to submit proposals.
* The decision to accept or reject a submission will depend on the Program
Team. Their decision will be final.
* The event will have different formats of sessions, like presentations,
workshops, panel discussions and 5-minutes lightning talks.
* All sessions will be conducted online.
* The organisers will provide the support to help the presenter understand
the use of online platforms like Zoom etc prior to the event..
* The organisers will also communicate with the presenter prior to the
event to help understand the entire process, or for general preparation.
* A session can be around 20 minutes long or more. A lightning talk should
be no longer than 5 minutes.
* There can be more than one presenter in one session. Feel free to make a
group for your session.
* The presenters for long duration sessions must ensure that they will be
available for the preparation and during their sessions.
* The presenters for lightning talks however can pre-record their sessions
earlier, if they want and send it to the organizers to play the recording
during their allotted time.
* A session will be conducted in English or any Indian language.
* Similar topics may be grouped together, or format may be changed by the
program team. The program team will contact the session presenters if those
decisions are taken.

We are sure that you will share some of your most inspiring stories and
conduct some really exciting sessions during the event. Best of luck for
your submissions!

Hi Om,

Thanks for sharing this awesome news!

Just one point. Unfortunately Wikimedia Commons doesn't allow to upload
works released under CC-BY-NC-SA license till now. You need to get them
relicensed again to more open license like CC-BY-SA, if that is possible.

2020-11-23 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Anupam,

Thanks for contributing in Wiki Loves Monuments.

It is totally ok if your mobile records your location as that is saved as
camera location in the metadata. You do not have to change that. However,
if you want to add the coordinate location of your target, you have to do
it manually by getting the data from any map service like Google map or OSM
and put it under object location template.

Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] Webinar: Possible modes of engagement of Wiki Communities with NDLI

2020-11-19 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

You might know, that National Digital Library of India (NDLI)[1] has signed
a memorandum of understanding with CIS-A2K and WMF early this year, for
future collaboration to enrich open knowledge platforms on Wikimedia sites,
focussing on Wikidata and Wikisource. The intended collaborative activities
were stalled since then due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On December 1, 2021, Sunday from 6 pm to 8 pm IST, NDLI would like to
introduce themselves and discuss possible modes of engagement between the
Wikimedia community and themselves.

If you would like to join the conversation, please block the dates. The
link of the video platform will be shared soon.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikidata Eighth Birthday merchandise

2020-10-07 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi everyone,

As you know, WikiProject India
 is celebrating
the 8th birthday of Wikidata
 this October
and on this occasion, CIS-A2K
will be sending *Wikidata special merchandise* to *all Indian affiliates*
and *communities* upon request as well as *active Wikidata contributors
residing in India*.

*Affiliates and Communities*

Please note,

   - *All Indian affiliates* are welcome to request for Wikidata special
merchandise and/or infrastructure. There is no need for community
notification. But, affiliate contacts or board members or executive
committee members or people in similar positions, who can represent the
affiliate, need to do the request.

   - *All Indian language communities*, except those who have geographical
affiliates, are welcome to request for Wikidata special merchandise
requests. But, the community should decide on-wiki and have clear consensus
to whom the merchandise will be sent.

   - Indian language communities having geographical affiliates are
requested to discuss any need with their respective affiliates first and
ask them to request them on their behalf.

   - Only *one request for each* affiliate or language community will be
   accepted.

   - It is expected that the requests for merchandise and/or infrastructure
should be practical enough to be used by community members and within the
budget of *maximum INR 10,000 for each affiliates*.

   - CIS-A2K will not design for the merchandise. If any custom design is
preferred, the affiliate or the community should upload it to Wikimedia
Commons as svg format and send the link to CIS-A2K, which will be taken
care of, while printing it. The design should be Wikidata specific only.

If this sounds interesting, please feel free to request here -
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday/India#Affiliates_and_Communities

*Active contributors*

   - CIS-A2K will *pro-actively send* different gifts or merchandise as
small token of appreciation for active Wikidata contributors from India.
Contributors *do not have to request* them.

   - Merchandise can be in the form of T-shirts or mementos or other
things. The budget allocated for each contributor is *INR 1,000*.

   - CIS-A2K will take care of the designing part.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India starts tomorrow

2020-10-02 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello Wikimedians,

FYI, Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India has ended on September 30, 2020.
This year around 4500 images
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_India>
were submitted, which is lower than previous years but the low number was
expected as COVID-19 has led to the restriction of movements preventing
people from going outside of their homes and taking photographs.

We have managed to increase the list of the non-designated monuments even
during the competition. Thanks to Subodh Kulkarni who had held meetings
with different municipal corporation authorities, heritage organizations
and other like minded organizations from Maharashtra to help us prepare
lists of monuments from Pune, Solapur, Ambajogai, Ichalkaranji, Satara etc.
Thanks to Shyamal, who helped to connect with Uday Kumar PL from the group
Inscription Stones of Bangalore, who are meticulously documenting
inscription stones from all over Bangalore; WLM now have a list of around
50 non-designated inscription stones from there too.

We have already started primary sorting of photographs from the organizer's
side taking care of certain criteria and will continue to do so upto 15th
October. We will then forward all the sorted photographs to the jury team,
who will take another 15 days to complete the judging process and declare
results by the end of the month. As always, jury decisions will be final.

Categorization of the images properly and data related works are also going
on simultaneously and will be done throughout the year.

Like previous years, we will finish the entire judging process within the
set deadline.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
(on behalf of WLM team)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 India updates

2020-09-08 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

There are three updates regarding WIki Loves Monuments 2020 in India
competition, which we do like to share with you.

a) Thanks to Sumitsurai, our jury team has been finalised. You can find
them here

.

b) All of the monuments in our list

will now be connected to WikiDocumetaries
, which is a web interface
bringing together information from all Wikimedia sites into one place.
Thanks to Susanna, WikiDocumentaries is also now providing the option to
upload Indian monuments from their site.

c) Krishna and Zache have worked on creating a generalised module
 which can
fetch Wikidata item of the monuments from our list while uploading and in
turn display Wikidata item and relevant external identifier template in
file description. Uploaders now don't have to worry about the monument ID
if they directly upload from our list. This module can also be adapted by
other participating countries which have migrated all their data to
Wikidata and/or having multiple campaigns. We have included the module and
necessary templates in our wlm-in
 campaign. Thanks a
lot, Krishna and Zache.

Hi,

Thanks for letting us know about your concern.

The jury members are not decided yet. User:Sumitsurai is coordinating with
the potential jury and will take care of this entire process of
finalisation. As soon as decisions are made, the jury page will be updated.
But, to assure everyone, as the judgment process will start around 10th
October, we have ample time to take decision.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India starts tomorrow

2020-08-30 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello Wikimedians,

We are very happy to announce that the Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India
is starting from tomorrow and will continue for the entire month of
September.

As this year, we are facing devastating effects of COVID-19, we urge you
to stay inside your home to avoid exposure to the deadly virus. You do not
have to go outside of your safe zone to photograph monuments. We are
completely okay if you can upload old photographs taken by you. Please be
safe first!

We are also expecting lesser participation than previous years due to the
restriction of movement due to the pandemic. So, to increase awareness
about the competition, we have created a promotional video at the last
moment (special thanks to Ananya and Rahul) and boosted it on Facebook.
Thanks to CIS-A2K for sponsoring the promotion part.
You can find the video on Commons here -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_India_(Promotional_video).webm
and on Facebook here - https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1616065545227639

Regarding the list of monuments, it will grow even during the competition
as the data entry is a continuous work for us throughout the year. We
heartily welcome Wikimedians from different parts of the country to work on
monuments protected by different local agencies and inform us in the event
talk page. We will find ways together to include them in the master list.

Just like previous years, we again promising to wrap up everything within
the expected timeline after the competition ends and we are going to keep
our promise again. :-)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Monuments in India this September. Just 2 weeks more to go!

2020-08-18 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Dearest Indian Wikimedians,

We are extremely happy to announce that West Bengal Wikimedians User Group
 is going to
organize the prestigious Wiki Loves Monuments

photo-competition at the national level

this September again for the third consecutive year. India is going to
participate in the event for the 7th time. Like before, User:Sumitsurai
will be leading our organizing team.

Special thanks to the utmost dedication of our incredible volunteers from
the team as well as from the community at large, for the last 3 years, we
have been steadily increasing the monument data on Wikidata using it as a
central database and almost the entire list

is now automatically fetched from there.

Earlier, we have also planned to move beyond ASI and state protected
monuments, and this year we are including Gandhi Heritage Sites, Heritage
Inventory of Indian Railways and Heritages of Portuguese Influence located
in different states and UTs of India. We are also including local
designated sites like the Heritage sites declared by West Bengal Heritage
Commission and Kolkata Municipal Corporation graded buildings. We are
expecting to completely add these data before the competition starts.

We are also aware that the designated monuments by different agencies are
just the tip of the iceberg. We have innumerable monuments from every part
of the country, which are very little or not documented at all, many are
ignored or on the verge of collapse or destruction due to various reasons.
However, we have very limited capacity in our team, but our audacious
ambition is to include as many of them as possible, if not all. For the
last 3 years, the user group has been running cost-effective dedicated
programs to digitally document these monuments, at least in West Bengal and
we have plans to include them in WLM sooner or later.

This year, we have also increased the prize money by around 20% from last
year and included some in-kind prizes too. From the feedback we received
from the participants, we have decided to send certificates to the winners.
Our team has requested

CIS-A2K to support the event financially and help us send those prizes to
the winners.

We are currently finishing last month preparations, cleaning and adding
more and more monument data, talking with potential jury members, creating
promotional banners etc.

Expecting your best wishes and active participation from September 1.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
Volunteer organizer,

[Wikimediaindia-l] Stay connected

2020-08-03 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello,

I am getting news that some of our community members from different parts
of the country and/or their loved ones, relatives and close neighbours are
getting infected by COVID-19 and/or affected by psychological problems due
to the stagnation of our lives for last few months. Things are definitely
not in good shape for many of us.

I would like to give a message to all our community members that if you
desperately need someone to talk or discuss something, please feel free to
call me if you have my number or send me a mail or schedule a video call,
whichever you want. It's extremely important to stay connected, talk and
not feel lonely.

I am sure that there are many others in the community who will be extremely
happy to help you too.

Stay safe (I mean it),

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fundraising in India - Launched

2020-08-03 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
+1 to everything that others said. We are getting negative reactions from
readers everywhere. No doubt, it's a bad design with a very unacceptable
tone to ask for money. In the midst of COVID-19 crisis, it's a very bad
timing too.

Being active on non-Wikipedia projects, this donation campaign does not
concern me at all, but for our Indian Wikipedia editors, there is an
extremely serious safety concern. Hope you have all noticed this article
and can understand the gravity of the situation.

https://theprint.in/india/biased-anti-hindu-campaign-begins-against-wikipedia-after-it-urges-indians-to-donate/472980/

So, Indian Wikipedia editors, please stay low and stay safe. This is WMF
campaign and it is definitely not worth to risk our own lives and families
for this. Personally, I am telling people to ask WMF fundraising team
directly when people are asking for explanations from me.

Regards,
(As a non-Wikipedia volunteer worried about our vulnerable Wikipedia
community members)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Affiliates meeting tomorrow on current situation of Rebranding

2020-06-20 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

I hope that the Indian community members are aware of the turmoil in the
community which has arisen from the entire process of rebranding initiative
of WMF and its recent updates. I hope many of you have noticed the RfC
,
brand name proposal

etc and the widespread opposition this process faced due to several valid
reasons, which were largely ignored in the process. Recently, I guess, all
affiliate contacts got a closed survey link to choose from three
''Wikipedia'' variants as the future brand.

Yesterday, the head of Communications department of WMF published an Executive
statement,

where she said the decision of rebranding was already made by the WMF
board. If that is true, the community and affiliates do not have the option
to discuss the necessity of the process or stop the process by raising
their valid concerns.

In this current situation, affiliates are meeting on an emergency basis to
discuss about what is happening and the next course of action from
bottom-up. Details of the meeting can be found here.

1st call: 21st January, 2020, 8:30 am IST

 Thanks Sivaraam,

But I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about part-time hired
people serving for 6 months or so on specific projects serving for specific
language communities. In India on account of Hindi's largest user base
Foundation chooses it whenever a new project comes in for getting input.
Mostly these positions are called 'liaison'.

They get paid and mostly these job's information not get publicly
available (like mailing list or village pump but maybe on the link you
gave). Whenever a new initiative takes place in foundation, these newly
made positions get filled up by people who doesn't have the confidence of
the community and in severe cases can't even write Hindi!

This is a important issue for our community. More information on this
 will be helpful.

 Many thanks,

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Indian scientists datathon

2020-05-21 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

Hope you and your loved ones are all safe and well while the pandemic is
bringing more and more cases in India and the super-cyclone Amphan has just
caused massive destruction in Odisha and West Bengal. Amidst all these
calamities and difficulties we are all facing in real life, it gives
everyone great hope and inspiration that our communities are working
relentlessly on their mission to give free access to the sum of all human
knowledge to every single person on the planet.

The Wikidata datathon mentioned in the previous mail is also going to start
soon in few hours. For the next 3 days, we are going to focus on building a
linked database about the Indian researchers and scientists, working on
different fields of science. On of the prime focus will definitely be SARS
COV2 and COVID-19. At the end of the datathon, we expect to fill the
existing data gap significantly.

If you have not joined already, but are interested, you can visit the event

[Wikimediaindia-l] Indian scientists datathon

2020-05-16 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

Hope you and your loved ones are safe and sound during this ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic situation.

This is for your kind information that, from 22nd May, 2020 Friday to 24th
May, 2020 Sunday, a datathon will be happening on Indian scientists on
Wikidata. The lack of data about Indian scientists, their works and
publications on Wikidata is the reason behind conducting the datathon.
Considering the ongoing pandemic, the datathon will also focus on
scientists working on COVID-19 and SARS COV-2.

The tasklist of the datathon is flexible. Participants can choose their own
preferred task on this topic

[Wikimediaindia-l] COVID-19 task force on Wikdiata need your helping hands!

2020-03-29 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

For last couple of weeks, I am trying to update state and district wise
data of COVID-19 pandemic in India on Wikidata. I have tried to organize
the workflow here
.
Thanks to Mahir for creating all the visualisation queries

and Jinoy for working on the health bulletins. To check how important the
entire work is, you can check this map showing the spread of the disease at
the district level or this line chart at the state
level, for example, all built from Wikidata. This is
useful for epidemiological research, distribution of relief and health
materials, planning of volunteer relief teams and many other aspects. There
are already quite a few non-Wikimedia volunteer workforce working on this.

Now, the problem is, there are huge discrepancies in data provided by WHO,
different government health bulletins, media houses and crowdsourced
volunteer initiatives and I have been trying as best as I could to find the
most accurate data and update them as far as at the district level. Also,
the Wikidata interface is not suitable for day-to-day updating like this
one, which is another problem. Needless to say, this is extremely
exhausting to do it alone for the whole country.

So, I appeal to every experienced Wikidata contributors in this list to at
least take care of the data of the districts of your states, so that the
workload is distributed and we can deliver high quality accurate
epidemiological data as the disease spreads further in the country. If I
have to do it alone, I will then have no other choice but to leave some
states behind which will create unavoidable and unwanted data gaps.

If you have any questions or want to join us, please ping me, Mahir or
Jinoy here.

We have a fairly active messenger chat group to coordinate with, where you
are more than welcome.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Update on Project Tiger 2.0 community workshop

2020-03-29 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Netha,

I have no opinion on next Project Tiger as I don't edit Wikipedia anymore.

For your project to translate short versions, that seems fine as they are
created by you or other medical professionals. Now, if someone incorporate
wrong or unreferenced information into that translation, that's his or her
responsibility medicolegally.

Bodhisattwa

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Update on Project Tiger 2.0 community workshop

2020-03-29 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Netha,

I am writing here as a Wikimedia volunteer, not as a A2K advisor.

For medical related articles, contests and other forms of mass editing
events might prove dangerous.

We all know, that Indic language Wikipedias are not curated or reviewed
properly due to lack of manpower and other reasons. Unlike English
Wikipedia, Indic language medical articles are full of misinformations and
false claims. The articles, if not reviewed and corrected by medical
professionals, might prove detrimental to readers who, by following any
misinformation and false informatiom written in the article, may become ill
and may die, in extreme cases. That would lead to serious medicolegal issue
to the editor who have provided that kind of information and that
responsibility may come to the organizers of that event. For example, any
COVID-19 related misinformation will lead one to jail in West Bengal.

For this reason, personally, I am strongly against this kind of
mass-editing of health related articles by non-experts.

Hi all,

I hope you have noticed that data regarding COVID-19 pandemic in India, its
states and districts are getting updated regularly from last few days. Now,
we have formally created a on-wiki page to better co-ordinate the
activities as the disease is spreading rapidly and the number of cases are
increasing.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikidata Skill Share

2020-03-17 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi list,

As COVID-19 has forced the Wikimedia communities to stay at home and like
many other affiliates, CIS-A2K has decided to suspend all offline
activities till 15th September, 2020 (or till further notice), I present to
you again Wikidata Skill Share
, a zero-budget (or low
budget, as seems fit) capacity building initiative, where Wikidata
contributors, both newcomers and experienced, can share knowledge and
skills with each other and clear confusions. Most of the time, it is done
online on 1:1 basis, so it is just the right time to participate there, if
you have not planned to do or done it already. Lets learn Wikidata together!

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikisource-l] Memorandum of Understanding with NDLI, CIS and WMF

2020-03-14 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for your reply and interest in the partnership.

It was discussed during the Delhi meeting that as a first step, NDLI will
come up with a unique authority control for the authors listed in their
website and we will match them with corresponding Wikidata items, thus
starting to link Wikidata content with NDLI website. The process was
expected to initiate from January, but due to some other other commitments
from NDLI as a government agency, it has not been started yet.

As a major part of this partnership will largely depend on the data model
stated in Wikidata WikiProject Books
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Books>, we need works
and their editions on different Wikisource projects properly linked with
Wikidata exactly following the data model. For Indian language Wikisources,
I can say, the linkages are still very low. It would be great, if we can
collaboratively engage as many as Wikisource communities as possible to
start linking their contents on Wikidata. We definitely need suggestions
and all kinds of help there organizing this.

We appreciate if highly experienced community members like you share inputs
and insight w.r.t. this collaboration. Please feel free to do so
pro-actively at any time.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] Memorandum of Understanding with NDLI, CIS and WMF

2020-03-14 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

It gives us immense pleasure to announce to the Wikimedia community
that National
Digital Library of India
 (NDLI),
Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) and Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) have
signed a tripartite non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a
2-years partnership. National Digital Library of India is a Ministry of
Human Resource Development

project, developed at IIT Kharagpur

which aims to build a virtual repository of learning resources and
literature metadata.

Through this understanding, we will work together on:

   - integrating Wikisource and Wikidata contents on NDLI website.

   - building up technical infrastructure on NDLI website to crowdsource
metadata curation on Wikidata and proofreading on Wikisource websites.
   - importing relevant contents and data from NDLI website to Wikidata and
   Wikisource.
   - identifying and pursuing collaboration opportunities around other
   Wikimedia projects, such as Wikibooks.

After months of discussion among the three parties, the understanding was
finalized during International Symposium on Knowledge Engineering for
Digital Library Design 2019, an international
conference organized collaboratively by NDLI and UNESCO at IIT Delhi
, where
WMF was a technical partner.

Many apologies for cross-posting the announcement in different relevant
mailing lists.

[Wikimediaindia-l] COVID-19 and West Bengal Wikimedians UG offline activites

2020-03-13 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

This is for your information, that West Bengal Wikimedians User Group will
not be organizing and/or supporting any offline Wikimedia activities and
projects till 15th September, 2020, (or until further notice) due to the
recent COVID-19 pandemic. This decision from the side of the user group was
taken as the user group primarily runs on WMF funds through rapid grants as
of now and WMF has decided
 to
not provide grants for any offline events until the said date. This means,
apart from our regular plans for meetups and workshops, we are also
suspending our Wiki Exploration, Documenting City Heritage and upcoming
GLAM plans and activities. We have informed our community leads who were
organizing and/or planning such events and they have all welcomed the
decision.

We will however organize and support online activities, as usual.
Currently, we have asked our community members to come up with their
proposals, which we can support in coming days. Requests can be done here
.

We thank WMF for taking the tough but necessary decision. Needless to say,
the decision has affected all our future plans, like many other affiliates,
but considering the safety and health of our extremely valuable volunteer
contributors, we heartily welcome this decision and will fully abide by it.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] Rapid grant reported of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group submitted

2020-03-01 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

This is for your information, that we have submitted the rapid grant report
of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group few hours back. The grant was
requested to conduct the user group activities for a whole year.

The grant proposal is here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/WBG/Annual_Plan_2019-20

The report is here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/WBG/Annual_Plan_2019-20/Report

We have spent just around 1 lakh 8 thousand rupees for our whole year
activity and we still have around Rs. 33,000 with us which are still not
spent due to various reasons. We have requested rapid grants team to use
that money for our future activities.

This year, before asking for rapid grants, we asked the community members
to come up with the projects, which they want to execute and need support.
It was a bottom-up decentralized approach in a mini-scale and we can say,
it went well. We learned a lot while exploring this approach and we will
try to make it better next time.

The user group has been working on documenting under-represented and
previously undocumented cultural and structural heritage for last 3 years
in an organized way. This year, our major spending was around Rs. 70,000 to
document around 272 heritage structures in 5 districts of West Bengal
through our Wiki Exploration Program. Other than that, we have spent money
on 1 Wiki Takes, 1 Documenting City Heritage, 5 meetups including AGM of
the user group, 1 workshop, 1 unofficial GLAM and content donation of 1
author. Prizes for Rabindranath Month Proofreading Contest on Bengali
Wikisource and Wiki Loves Monuments were taken care by CIS-A2K, so that
didn't came under Rapid Grant. This year, we couldn't work on documenting
museums, for next year there are plans already.

Like before, we have tried to do effective projects optimally with our
limited resources. The user group was very meticulous in planning the
projects keeping in mind about the value of donation money, involving
community members of the West Bengal who actively participated in every
steps. Needless to say, as always, we didn't compromise on participant
safety and comfort, without over-spending a single rupee for luxury.

We have also maintained utmost transparency, as previous years. Our on-wiki
event pages have a section on financial reports with detailed budget
breakdown.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [WikiConference India 2020] Conference & Event Grant proposal to WMF

2020-02-05 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Krishna,

Yes, I talked about both the conferences in my reply, knowing very well
that they are not related, but have a common feature of asking huge amount
of 80 lakhs rupees, which is also co-incidental. My point was not on the
theme of the two conferences, it was on the question if we need to spend
this amount of money on conferences.

As you and I had discussion in the private chat, I don't want to repeat
myself again. We discussed some points yesterday about where budgets can be
cut down. May be we didn't agree, but I made some of my points and you were
kind enough to made yours. If we both agreed at some point, I would have
discussed in the talk page, for sure.

Conferences are fine and one annual global community conference is needed
for good, but when around 80 lakh rupees is spent on even national or
thematic conferences in India, where commodities are still cheaper than
many other countries, then we need to rethink, if we really need these
conferences and re-analyze if there is really the need of hour to spend
such huge amount of donation money. Maybe there will be a national
conference next year and the same or more amount of money will be requested
to spent, which might not be needed. Are we ready and mature enough to open
the Pandora's box? May be we are, I am not sure though.

As I said earlier, I find the amount of money overwhelming, when I look
back into our community activities which so painstakingly focuses on
cost-effectiveness as well as impact, but that's my community perspective,
which you don't have to agree with.
For example, the amount of money you are asking for a 3-days conference can
be utilized by West Bengal community for nearly 50 years, if we follow our
current fund request procedure. I know the two kinds of activities are not
comparable, but just saying.

Also, this is my personal decision not to participate in these events. So,
nothing to worry about me from your end. I am just one volunteer.

I rest my case. Best wishes for the grant request.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

2020-02-03 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Krishna,

Sorry to say, but as a volunteer, I can not find justification of spending
1 crore 60 lakhs rupees on just two conferences happening one after
another. The amount is huge and beyond my imagination.

As a volunteer coming from West Bengal community which have always worked
on optimal budget and respected donation money, and yet delivered
consistent results through impactful projects each year, I find these
expenditure out of proportion. This money could have been otherwise spent
on several high impact projects for many years.

I cannot say on behalf of my entire community but, personally, from my
part, I cannot endorse this. Also, I guess, endorsement or opposition
doesn't matter nowadays and these proposals will eventually get approved,
in that case, I will not participate in the events in any capacity.

Sorry, if I sound too harsh, but that's only because English is not my
native language. I could have better expressed in my mother tongue.
