Need to upgrade from your 2 by 4 to a 4 by 4? ;) One thing I forgot to say in my rant is consider anyone over the above of 18 is "registered to vote" in Sweden the percentage SHOULD be lower than in a country where you have to actually register your intent to vote to be allowed to vote and yet around 85% vote there vs 65% here. ;P At times I wonder how many knows how and what they need to do to register to vote (I would hope everyone that are allowed to register to vote knows). But even further how many actually knows right now (no matter registered to vote or not) where they should go to vote? In Sweden once your 18 and upon the next election you get your voting card sent to you by mail which shows when and where you are expected to vote. I still get the vote card even after living 10 years here in the US (ashamed to say that I have not voted the last 2 elections but then I have very minimal clue what going on political back in Sweden).. FYI for anyone not knowing yes I'm still Swedish citizen and not a US citizen so am not allowed to vote in the US elections (I'm a legal alien ;) so anyone that meet me can claim they meet an alien... lol ) Alright back to my corner.. I just think we were at a disadvantage from day 1 because Obama had a Blackberry, so was well versed on the value of mobility. Oddly, I was a McCain fan a few years ago, even when I didn't agree with him on a fair number of issues-but he seemed to have some backbone. However, I was pretty disgusted by his pandering in the last election and voted for Obama. But then, I felt (and still feel) that Obama is a lot more moderate/conservative than most of his party realizes. Note that this by no means makes him a conservative-just more conservative than the majority of his backers seem to understand. When I was on the school board out this way, I used to publicly say I'd rather have twice the voter turn out and lose than half the turn out and win, whether for my own re-election or on the yearly public vote on the budget. You can imagine the gasps of indignation from certain elements of the electorate by that statement. The lack of participation, whatever the outcome, undermines our institutions. The only way in this country for the forseeable future is for something like the Tea Party to put enough candidates into both partys to take over and pass some serious reforms. Term Limits, Tort reform, Constitutional balanced budget amendment (with a provision to kick them all out of office if they don't). Although I would pay more in tax, I would like to see all government fees and taxes constitutionally abolished and replaced with a flat sales tax at the point of sales only. Indeed. I am a conservative, but anyone that stays too far from their party's intent is worse for their party than the other is to that intent. I think everyone should have a sign over their heads that says if they voted or not, relative to what they're talking about. If they didn’t vote (and had an opportunity), then they should be ignored. That's something that has always irked me. Congress got the ball rolling when the term limits were created for the office of the President, yet we cannot get that same body to set limits for themselvesmakes you wonder. The other part of this that bothers me, is how clueless the American people are when it comes to voting for congressional and state representatives in the district they live in. If people want change they have NO CHOICE but to pull the lever against the incumbent in their own districts. I don't care how good a job they might be doing, as a citizen you may hate and disapprove of every other representative, but you have NO RIGHT to vote those others out of office by virtue of WHERE you are registered to vote. The politicians know this very well. This is why you see all kinds of obscure grants and government projects get approved with oversized checks and press conferences just before an election. These are what congress calls member line item projects, others call them pork barrel projects. The reality is they are buying votes for those who pull the lever and have short term memory. It breeds politicians who think they are invincible and not accountable to the people, but rather to the political system in the houses where they hold seats. If the public were to en masse vote every incumbent out of office, it MIGHT give a wake up call to these folks that they should answer to their constituents rather than the dysfunctional system they do today. This isn't really that big of a deal. The DNS root servers just refer to the top level domain servers. All transferring control to the ITU would enable is they could add new TLDs through whichever process they want. Note that policy control of the root servers does not translate into operational control of the root servers. The root server operators (http://www.root-servers.org/) diverse enough that I doubt the UN or whoever could get away with removing a TLD pointer. Example: Cogent hosts a root server farm. Lets say the ITU wants to remove the pointer to .com. Do you really think Cogent would allow that change to go through (or not reverse the change) since most of their customers would get pissed off that their favorite web sites don't come up? Control over pointers to .com/.tw/etc does not convey censorship ability on domains below the TLD. The key to the control America has over the Internet is through the management of the Domain Name System (DNS) and the giant servers that service the Internet. Domain names are managed through an entity named IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. The IANA, which operates on behalf of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is responsible for the global coordination of the DNS, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources. In short, without an IP Address or other essential Internet protocols, a person or entity would not have access to the Internet. For years, the international community has been pressuring the United States to surrender its control and management of the Internet. They want an international body such as the United Nations or even the International Telecommunications Union, (an entity that coordinates international telephone communications), to manage all aspects of the Internet in behalf of all nations. The argument advanced for those seeking international control of the Internet is that the Internet has become such a powerful, pervasive, and a dependent form of international communications, that it would be dangerous and inequitable for any one nation to control and manage it. Just this past spring, within months of Obama's taking office, his administration, through the Department of Commerce, agreed to relinquish some control over IANA and their governance. The Obama administration has agreed to give greater representation to foreign companies and countries on IANA. This amounts to one small step for internationalism and one giant leap for surrendering America's control over an invention we have every right and responsibility to control and manage. It is in America's economic and national security interests not to relinquish any control. We are responsible for the control, operation, and functionality of one of the modern world's greatest inventions and most powerful communications network. I was just wondering about this the other day. It seems that we (USA) give things away so freely only to have them used against us. In the case of the net, I find it ironic that the very thing we developed is being used to attack our government and our people in so many ways yet we let everyone connect to it.
