Not yet, I think I'm now infrequently using so many features I need
to put in place a test suite I can run each time any change is made.

Other than that I'm really pleased :-)

This was difficult to find but when I checked my main mailserver I
found it had developed the same problem but same NetBSD version 3.1+
as system that was ok. As these are near identical configuration I
just diffed the files and found a typo in server.tab smartdns line
and on correcting this could again send mail to hosts on lan ok.
Problem with NetBSD-4 system was down to same fault.

How do I check on that?

I found I'd messed up testing on the NetBSD-3.1 system and outgoing
mail was working from root when checking xmail-1.25-pre16 but I
was logged into a user account when I tried xmail-1.25. This was
giving the error that domain didn't exist.

Today when I tried again with xmail-1.25 but from root account it
worked ok and when I added the user account to /etc/mail/aliases
and ran newaliases (sendmail) outgoing mail was then also working
ok from that user as well.

Now back to NetBSD-4.0.
I'm still unable to get local mail outgoing from NetBSD-4.0
whilst mail to public addresses seems be delivered ok.

The dns server is same for NetBSD-3.1 as for NetBSD-4.0 so I
suspect problem is due to some changes from NetBSD-3.1 with
Sendmail to NetBSD-4.0 with Postscript.

Local mail delivery to other hosts on lan worked ok via
Postscript.

Forgot to tell that NXDOMAIN is "Domain does not exist".

I think XMail is getting a ERR_DNS_NXDOMAIN (NXDOMAIN) from your DNS
server. When that's happening, XMail does not even try to fall back to the
A record delivery.

Seems way hostnames are checked is different between NetBSD-4.0
(xmail-1.25-pre16) and NetBSD-3.1 (xmail-1.25) or NetBSD-3.1 (xmail
1.25).

NetBSD 3.1 3.1 4.0
xmail 1.25-pre16 1.25 1.25

private A
address
sendmail ok fail fail
recv ok ok ok

public MX
address
xmailrelayok ok not checked
sendmail ok ok ok
recv ok ok not checked

I have local dns for hosts on lan which also caches public
addresses. There are only A records for private addresses.
Server.tab has SmarDNSHost set to use local dns server. Mutt
and some logging uses /var/MailRoot/bin/sendmail but I could
get round part of problem by using postfix instead.

Send failures have this form of error
[<00>] XMail bounce: [EMAIL PROTECTED];
Error=[Recipient domain "p4x2400c.home.lordynet.org"
does not exist (or it has a misconfigured DNS)]

I've still to try an earlier version of xmail on NetBSD-4.0 and also
try again with ipv6 enabled.

I'm still working on it but it appears to be NetBSD-4 and/or ipv6
related. Any help would still be appreciated.

Sockstat showed xmail to be listening on tcp6 on all three systems.
NetBSD-3.1 mail.lordynet.org is ipv6 enabled and both ipv4 and ipv6
working.

NetBSD-3.1 with test server used same commandline with
"-M7 -B6 -P6 -S6 -X6" and also. With those parameters removed I now
see sockstat only shows xmail listening on tcp rather than tcp6 and
this system now accepts external connections.

NetBSD-4.0 on intended new server had same commandline but after
restart with above parameters removed I still get sockstat showing
tcp6 and connection refused except from localhost. With two
previously unconfigured interfaces set to dummy ip4 addresses,
sockstat now shows tcp rather than tcp6 and I can make remote
connections.

So although systems are now working I suspect there is some problem
there with xmail and or NetBSD. Also with default postfix there
wasn't a problem. I disabled xmail and undid the changes to
interfaces and sockstat then showed postscript listening on tcp (not
tcp6) whilst external connections are ok.

cheers

Sorry for followups to my own message but it now looks to be a
configuration issue of some kind as my spare NetBSD 3.1 system
XMail-1.25-pre16 shows exact same problem so it's probably not
particularly a NetBSD-4 problem. I can telnet to port 25 on main
server by hostname ok but get connection refused from spare server.
It's only a few weeks ago that I setup and tested smtps and pop3
connections from a Ubuntu system to this spare server before
transferring that configuration to main server to provide reasonably
secure remote access as well as allowing direct connections from
friends with outgoing port 25 blocked by isp.

sorry for the noise - again

I've looked through startup scripts and main difference is single
extra line in script with 1.25:

ulimit -s 128

If I add that line to my own script I also get a segfault/coredump.

If XMail does not even reach the phase where it logs an entry in the slog
file, there must be some serious issue in your particular setup.
Enough RAM?
Disk space?
Too many ports in TIME_WAIT state?
System logs looks fine?
Any wierd filter running?
Which OS?
Did you try running in debug mode?

[xmail] Re: Problem with xmail not resending emails

2007-11-15 Thread Øyvind Kinsey
I've used Ethereal to sniff the traffic while viewing the log, and
xmail often tries only the first time, gets greylisted, and does NOT
try to resend the emails.
I was also running in debug mode and there was nothing happening there
at the different PeekTimes.
I was under the impression that PeekTime is when xmail tries to resend
the emails (have not found any docs on this subject) but as I said,
xmail NEVER tries to resend certain messages.
This has caused me to have email delayed up to three days until they
were frozen and resubmitted. Only then would xmail try to send it
again.
I'm using -Mr 24 -Pl -Sl -Ql -Fl -Cl -Yl -Ll -Qt 480 -Qi 2 -Qr 10 as
commandline params.
Any suggestions?
For now I have been forced to relay all traffic to a postfix MTA.

Davide is true.
I can add "did you change xmail default retry interval" ?
I ask this because, normally xmail will try more thant 2 times, and you =
said
xmail tried only 2 times.
With default xmail retries paterns your mail will pass after some more
retries, as the foreign system greylisted your message only for 122 =
seconds,
and xmail retries many times in the first hour (and more than an hour)

[xmail] Re: Problem with XMail, POP and all Webmail Software

2005-06-16 Thread CLEMENT Francis

Seems these webmail softwares use the wrong message ID to refer to the
mailbox mail !!
Seems they use the LIST command result to 'point' to the messages in the
mailbox and it is a BAD practice :
LIST command returned values are not guaranteed to preserve message IDs
across sessions
So LIST command is generally used for pop3 client that will retreive all the
mail, just using the LIST command to have an 'idea' of the number of mail
available at the time of the list command

To point to specific mails in the mailbox, programs (webmail or mua) MUST
use the UIDL command to get real 'pointers' to the mails in the mailbox !!
The UIDL are 'guaranteed' to point to the same mail in the mailbox and are
not subject to change across sessions

To clarify : On POP3 protocol, you have two commands to get the list of
mails present in the mailbox : LIST or UIDL

LIST
+OK 5 15000
1 5034
2 2552
3 1195
4 1555
5 4664

So when a new mail comes in, in next LIST you can have :
LIST
+OK 6 15255
1 2552
2 4664
3 255
4 1195
5 1555
6 5034

And the webmail asking to delete message 3 (1195 bytes from first list
command reference) will effectively delete message 3 (255 bytes) if delete
command is send after new message is received in mailbox

The GOOD webmail should USE the UIDL command :

UIDL
+OK 4
1 1028745715263.1556.toto
2 1062432866368.1924.toto
3 1062433302173.1404.toto
4 1067127927549.1956.toto

The uidl is the right walue (1028745715263.1556.toto for example) and will
not change after deleting messages or receiving new messages.
The first colomn is only a counter, not a 'pointer'/index (just to count the
number of returned lines)
So after the server receive a new mail the UIDL will return something like
this :

UIDL
+OK 4
1 1028745715263.1556.toto
2 1062433302173.1404.toto
3 1065447858963.2556.toto (new mail here)
4 1067127927549.1956.toto
5 1062432866368.1924.toto

Even if the returned lines order can change (so don't use the first value as
the index), the uidl don't change and point to the original good message !!!

By default xmail uses POP3-before-SMTP authentication, look in the
server.tab section of the manual. It's still a good idea to enable in
your e-mail client to send authentication for outgoing mail.

All you need to do to stop the spammers is shutdown your open relay by
emptying the smtprelay.tab file.
You don't want to enable smtp auth, that will prevent other servers from
sending you mail. By emptying the smtprelay.tab anyone sending mail that
is not local will have to authenticate when sending.

I don't have time right now to run XMail in debug mode, but tomorrow, i
will certainly post everythign that I recieve. I think that it iw a
worthy note that back when I was using windows, Norton would pop an
error every once in a while whil delivering these messages I told you
about, saying that mail could not be delivered. Usually, the addresss
that it specified did not exist was some random word or phrase at
yahoo.com. Like I said, though, I disabled all incoming SMTP access, and
the problem never stopped. Now that the server is linux, and I have no
norton, I am not sure exactly what is going on, however, I think it may
be the same thing. Tomorrow, I will run XMail in debug mode and post
whatever results I recieve here. Thanks for your help. I really like
xmail, and I want to continue using it, so I hope we figure this out :-)

Can you post the whole messages that XMail prints when in debug mode?
When XMail running, try (and post results):

# netstat -t -u -p -n -a

Hmmm, is any mail going through? It almost sounds like XMail is
generating errors while logging, sending notifications to the
postmaster, which are bouncing or looping generating all the activity
you see. Make sure the /var/MailRoot/logs directory exists and has it's
permissions set to 700. What output are you getting on the console
during this activity?

Anyone else out there is welcome to jump in with suggestions. I'm
running out of ideas.

Yes, and there should be activity to log, I have sent messages through
the server, and used XMail Administrator to access ctrl, but still no
logs. I thought it might be relavant to say that when the server ran
windows, Norton Antivirus kept notifying me that it was scanning
outgoing messages CONSTANTLY. Hundreds of messages were being send per
minute, and when I would stop XMail, so would the activity.

Are you having the same problems as before with XMail using lots of
resources? The logs won't be created until there's activity to log. Try
to use CtrlClnt to add a user to your root domain and then send that
user a test message. If you have problems try to figure it out from the
console output. I'm not an expert on debug output but if you don't get
anywhere post the output to the list and maybe someone else can help.
