[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-04-11 Thread Joe Harrell
This error continues to occur until it reaches maximum retries. I
must have "defrosted" the message about 3 times and had it do the same
thing before setting it up so that XMail sent it through my ISP, which
it did on the first try.

I have limited time to spend running tests and stuff on this, it's
only a "hobby". But if anyone has anything specific they'd like me to
run, let me know.

BTW, this is intermittant, I'm pretty sure I've been able to send
stuff to my hotmail address through this server in the past.

Thinking about it I realize that that wouldn't account for why SmartDNShost
pointing to local DNS would work and without it it wouldn't ...

I'm going to look back over the old emails (if I can find them) and see if I
can find the article on Windows DNS that I originally thought might be
related...

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-04-07 Thread Jeff
Please correct me if I am wrong (my understanding of DNS is not a thourough
as I would like it to be) but doesn't a root request simply attempt to find
the actual DNS for a given server? In other words, root doesn't provide the
actual DNS but rather the location that the DNS request should be passed to,
right?

So, thinking back over some of the previous email about this, has it been
suggested that the problem is with the DNS request for the Hotmail/MSN
domain, or that the problem is with the domain the sender controls - if with
the Hotmail domain, then I follow your reasoning, but if there is a problem
with the sending domain, then it would be your DNS that would be the
responsible DNS for domain resolution, right? So, I can't remmeber (and
don't have the mail) what the final thought was on the Windows DNS, but if
you have a domain that is handled by yur DNS, and Hotmail or MSN make a
request about that domain when mail is sent to them, and your DNS server has
a problem (related to being Windows DNS) then might this be a problem, or do
I have this all wrong?

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-04-07 Thread Jeff
This may not have anything to do with it, but Brazil addresses possibly seem
to have something to so with this problem ... is it possible that MSN and
/or Hotmail are doing something highly restrictive with Brazilian IP's, even
if they are not in an RBL, or something like that? Windows users also seem
to be having the problem far more (or exclusively).

I noticed that a month or so ago as well when some of the mails about this
were being sent.

It is important to note that I have (so far) never had any problems similar
to the ones being mentioned with Hotmail or MSN, and I think that there are
many XMail users who are also not having this problem, so there must be a
common thread of some sort other than just XMail.

For now I'm forwarding all messages to hotmail.com and msn.com to another

Not intending to start this thread up again, but everything I've read
on the subject says this is somehow Windows related but I'm having a
similar problem delivering to hotmail.com and msn.com, but my XMail
(1.20) server is on Linux .

I was getting this error as it cycles through the MX's.

ErrCode   = -5
ErrString = Timeout error
SMAIL SMTP-Send MX = "mx4.hotmail.com." SMTP = "sougent.com" From =
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" To = "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" Failed !
SMTP-Error = "417 Temporary delivery error"
SMTP-Server = "mx4.hotmail.com."

I've worked around it by forwarding all mail to hotmail or MSN through
my ISP but it'd be nice to know what's going on.

It may, or may not be, the same problem. A lot of things can cause a
temporary delivery error. Is it just hotmail and msn? Is it intermittent,
or every attempt to send? You are running the xmail server on Linux - is
that where the DNS is also? Do you have reverse DNS (the error would
probably be different if not, but just in case...)?

When you do not use SmartDNSHost, what is handling the DNS if the Windows
machine handles it when you do?

I'm still having the problem, but with Windows version of XMail 1.21

For now I'm forwarding all messages to hotmail.com and msn.com to another

IMHO you should run a packet sniffer on your machine and send us the traces.
That is one possibility to get over this thing. tcpdump/ethereal is your

2005-04-07 Thread Tony Shiffer
This error looks a little different than the others who have had problems
with earthlink/hotmail/ etc. We never got a timeout error this way, and I
don't remember seeing it in the previous thread.

To rephrase, on two subject windows servers, one NT & one 2000, with
different version of xmail, behave exactly the same.

When smartDNShost is not used, we get the errors. When smartDNShost is
used, and pointed at the windows DNS server on the same machine as xmail,
the errors do not occur.

It just doesn't seem correct to say that its a windows DNS problem since the
solution of the problem is to use a windows DNS server for smart host.

According to Davide, xmail without smartdnshost, goes all the way to root
for its dns resolutions. It seems as if it were a Windows DNS problem,
setting smarthost to a windows DNS server would cause the problem, and not
solve it.

2005-04-07 Thread CLEMENT Francis

Not to defend windows against linux or other os but it seams thit is =
not
exclusively a 'windows' related issue.

My windows/xmail couple work fine with hotmail/msn, started with =
windows
2000 sp0/xmail 0.65 up to windows 2000 sp4/xmail 1.21 ... and always =
with
windows own dns servers ...
If this is a 'windows' problem it is in the specific windows =
installation
(conflics, bad dll's, ...).

For your present request on linux, as the error is "417 Temporary =
delivery
error", this is not a fatal delivery error, so xmail will try later. =
Let
xmail do the job until you receive a fatal NoDeliveryReport from your =
xmail
server.
'Time out' could be du to hotmail servers too busy, temporary network
bandwidth full on internet, no more disk space at hotmail, (or grey =
list ?)

Here it is strange that your isp can deliver to hotmail the same time =
you
can't directly.

If you let xmail doing the 'normal' retries, do you finaly receive a =
fatal
NDR (5xx code) ?

If yes the tests to run are exactly the same used in the 'windows' =
problem
with hotmail :
- Verify dns records for your xmail linux server, keep in mind that =
hotmail
used multiple tests to fight spams (don't know exacts tests but could =
be
rdns checks, spf records checks, black lists, grey lists, ...)
- Verify if your ip is 'black lists'
- Try to simulate a smtp session from the xmail linux server to hotmail =
and
see if result is the same then try from another pc to compare
- Try to run tcpdump to get traces of the smtp sessions with hotmail
..
..

Send any informations you can get on the list. More informations you =
send,
more help you get ;-)

I could be wrong, but I THINK that it means the connection was terminated
early. You could always use a telnet client to connect to a hotmail MX
server and try to send an email by hand - see directly what's going on, such
as error messages. I also remember someone talking about that error message
along with DNS issues. If memory serves, it occurs when XMail can't find
the IP address for the MX as in the server.

Correct me anyone if I'm wrong :)

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com, earthlink, end of socket stream dtata, on windows PC

2005-03-21 Thread Mike Harrington
I could be wrong, but I THINK that it means the connection was terminated
early. You could always use a telnet client to connect to a hotmail MX
server and try to send an email by hand - see directly what's going on, such
as error messages. I also remember someone talking about that error message
along with DNS issues. If memory serves, it occurs when XMail can't find
the IP address for the MX as in the server.

Correct me anyone if I'm wrong :)

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com, earthlink, end of socket stream dtata, on windows PC

2005-03-21 Thread Edinilson J. Santos
Davide, something is very strange about this error because the other windows
2000 server with CDONTS is exactly configured in the same way the xmail's
server is.
In the server with microsoft smtp server messages to hotmail.com and msn.com
aren't queued. They were delivered in the first try.
But, with XMail, messages to hotmail.com and msn.com are queued stay there
until the error maximum number of retris has been reached raises.

I'm discarding DNS problems.

Thanks

On that very specific instance no, I didn't post traces. It was to prove to
me what was happening, so I could work around the problem.

>

No, not trolling.
With regard to the problem I posted about in Dec 2004 - I emailed both the
list and Davide directly (Davide got real ip and email address detail in his
emails) with lots of detail. In total there were nearly 10 emails between
Davide and myself. But after a few emails for info and results being sent
back, the thread died. I even asked what was happening next, and got no
response.

This is the first email that was sent to the list.
http://www.mail-archive.com/xmail@xmailserver.org/msg11745.html

The dns issue I had prior to this one is here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/xmail@xmailserver.org/msg04589.html

If you'd care to re-investigate, I'll be happy to go through it again.

XMail sends to the A records if and only if the quesry for MX records
fails.

Exactly. They even tried to break the existing standards for DNS queries.

XMail, when used w/out the SmartDNSHost option set, perform full (from
".") DNS queries to get MX records. If you use SmartDNSHost, the query
goes to the smart DNS host, with recursion bit set. Now, since all three
reports came from MS setups, and since the MX resolution code is exactly
the same for Unix and Win32, I lean towards the assumption that this might
be some problem with the MS setup. A trace of the queries (and data
received) done by XMail when used w/out SmartDNSHost would help.

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com, earthlink, end of socket stream dtata, on windows PC

2005-03-19 Thread edinilson
Tony, thanks for you help but unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem (for
now) because I always have used SMARTDNSHOST (since first contact with XMail).
I will try to do the opposite: NOT use SMARTDNSHOST and report the result to
you (and the list).

Just remembering:
-I pointed SMARTDNSHOST to others flavors of DNS servers (djbdns and bind in a
freebsd box and microsoft dns servers in others networks) without success.
-To bypass the problem until a solution I'm forwarding all emails to
hotmail.com and msn.com to another server using microsoft smtp server (aka
CDONTS).

Thank you

Edinilson

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-03-18 Thread CLEMENT Francis

Very long thread here ...

Just four questions :

- Did you report your problem to hotmail ?

If you did not change anything on your server and it worked=20
before, and sudently stop working only with hotmail, and after=20
some basic tests (clear local dns, server cache, clear xmail dns=20
cache, verify your ptr records, nslookup to hotmail mx, nslookup=20
for ptr record, ..., try sending to hotmail with telnet on same=20
machine, verify or add spf records as hotmail use them, ...=20
seems most of these tests where already done)
THEN contact hotmail ...
Seems something at hotmail was changed recently or you are now=20
'blacklisted' internaly at hotmail for some (bad) reasons=20
(new policies at hotmail ? bug at hotmail that spuriously block=20
some servers ...)

- Are you using filters ? in xmail server or in the path between
your xmail server and hotmail servers ?
See if any have been recently updated ? (bug in update, ...)

- Did you try to do smtp traffic analyse (using basic Microsoft
windows network analyser freely installable from add/remove in
windows component or free analysers like very good etherreal) to
track smtp sessions with hotmail to see when the problem starts=20
in the session ? This can help to find the underlaying problem ...

- Did you try sending to hotmail.com with a smtpgw.tab line
pointing to the smtp server at your internet connection provider
(or a not hotmail blocked smtp server from a friend) to confirm=20
that in this case mails are received by hotmail normally ?
"hotmail.com"[TAB]""
This can temporary resolve your problem with hotmail (if you have
no possible gateway to use, ask me) and confirm taht this is not a
mail or session content/format problem ...

After a week without solution I made a test to eliminate lan and dns
problems.
Using smtpfwd.tab to forward all messages to hotmail.com and msn.com to =
a
server with CDONTS (Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service) inside our lan I =
could see
that all messages were delivered without problems.

BUT my XMail server couldn't send them directly. I changed xmail's =
server ip
address but without success.

Could someone give me a light about this problem?

Thanks

2005-03-17 Thread Sergio Perrone

I only can tell you what is my scenario to help you:

- My LAN works with Xmail 1.21 (2 of them) over W2000 servers behind a
Linux firewall;
- My internet connection is ADSL (yes I do!), so my ip is in a dial-up
range;
- I´ve got a legal domain name (.com) hosted in DynDns.org;
- I´ve configured SPF records;
- I´ve tested my self with 'http://www.abuse.net/relay.html' in order to
pass 'open relay´tests;
- The firewall RESPONDS to icmp queries (this is important for some SMTP
servers)
- My users CAN send email directly to Hotmail (I don´t use my ISP smtp
server).

OK, did I miss something, or have UDP-based DNS messages been changed since
the last time I looked?

Nope... Still a 512 octet message length (section 2.3.4). Any UDP-based DNS
message longer than that is not RFC compliant, and (IMHO) should be
blocked. That's why there's a method to fall back to TCP when there's more
data to be returned than will fit in a 512 octet message

If there's an RFC that allows larger packets in UDP, could you reference it
please?

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-03-12 Thread Kroll, David
This is a Win2003 DNS issue.
Some mailservers behind firewalls which do not allow transfer of UDP packets
larger than 512 bytes may not be able to return the MX record

If your firewall restricts UDP packet transfers though, you may want to
verify that it will allow transfer of a MX record within the size
limitations specified by RFC1035:

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1035.html

Windows 2003 server has included Extension Mechanisms for DNS (EDNS0) to
allow larger packets. If you run this command on a 2003 server: "dnscmd
Server Name/Config /EnableEDnsProbes 0", it fixes it without making any
changes to the firewall.

We have started to get these same errors - for the last 2-3 months. Never
any before then. It has happened sending to earthlink, hotmail, and some
others. Its does not allways seem to happen. Often, if the user resends
the message - it goes through just fine.

It includes the error -162's , and some times error text that says that
relaying is prohibited, or that the sender is not recognized as being
connected to that ISPs network (which they aren't, of course).

We have investigated DNS, RDNS, as well as the infastructure (NICs, cabling,

and even power supllies in the xmail server boxes.). Inone case, we even
had the ISP (level3.com) replace the network cable all the way from our
rack, back to the main switch. Nothing has made any difference.

It happens on xmail 1.13 run on one old box, and xmail 1.20. - both Windows
boxes. These boxes are in different locations on different subnets so they
have nothing in common as far as ISP, hosting location, or domains being
handled by xmail.

I usually use the "spam database lookup" on http://dnsstuff.com/. It
seems a little more thorough than ordb.org.

Edinilson's subnet appears to be listed on JAMMDNSBL... though I doubt
hotmail uses that list.

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-03-11 Thread Jeff Buehler
By the way, now that I have had time to read these links a bit more (a
small Friday night party in my backyard got in the way), if you are
running exchange, this article might actually help you! Strangely
enough, I was (possibly) more correct in pointing the finger at Windows
(and the Windows DNS implementation, and Exchange) than I thought.

However, FreeBSD (my system of choice) was until recently opening and
not closing hundreds of file handles because of a bug in the code, so
lets keep this about solving the problem and not Windows. The good news
is that Linux and FreeBSD users can modify the code and recompile when
problems come up! Yay! Whoops, there I go ... Anyway, check this out -
I hope it helps.

Greetings all,
I couldn't agree with you more on ALL counts. I hate to sound like
a "me too". But I/ we host a few black lists (RBL's). So I thought
that it seemed the most likely resolution would be to check with
the problem domains (hotmail, earthlink) and see who they are using
as an RBL. Themselves, or one of the well known ones:
http://ordb.org/submit/ is a great way to check if your listed most
anywhere, and hence, blocked.

P.S. *BSD truly *is* the best choice. ;)

Perhaps the problem is that you are running Windows servers rather than
Linux, or even better, *BSD?
Or perhaps I shouldn't take advantage of this mail list to express
personal preferences?
No need to reply to that ... I'm just kidding. :)

However, and this probably doesn't help, I haven't had any of the
problems you are describing. It almost sounds like it might be a
geographical location issue (?). I have users sending to Hotmail
regularly, as well as Earthlink accounts, and there haven't been any
problems - I may have a lower volume than you do, though.

The only thing I can think of that seems to be a significant general
change is SPF - is it possible that this is related to that? Also, have
you verified that your IP isn't on any blacklists? Both Earthlink and
Hotmail have upped their anti-spam campaign pretty heavily.

Thats all I can think of!

Does xmail always fail sending to hotmail or just some of the time? If
just some of the time then try several manual telnet sessions at
different times and see if you get the same results.

Go here, http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
They have 16 MX servers, only 4 MX records, and you are stuck in a crap
shoot. You happen to cache 4 down servers, untill you hit TTL, you are
out of luck. Then you have to pray the next round gets you live servers.

The connection does not even born, or it is rejected soon after
establishment. Try to run a telnet SMTP session manually, from inside your
net first, and from another net in your area (if you can). Maybe Hotmail's
postmaster is an Italian and does not like Brazil since they have more
World Cup than we do ;)

Try telneting to mx1.hotmail.com smtp port and sending a message by hand
and see what messages you get back and at what point in the transaction.

RDNS was created years ago (we are an ISP since 1996) and is working fine
(http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=atinet.com.br)

We have created spf records too but the problem persists.

Any idea?

Thank you

I'm not sure, but I expect Hotmail does a RDNS-Check on your mailserver.
Check your "Reverse DNS" at http://www.dnsstuff.com/ (enter your
IP-adress under Reverse DNS Lookup).
Anyway, reverse resolution is a must in these days.
