Just a few points --
one: as you already pointed out, many times singers are taken based on
their availability. I do realize that Udit has really cutback on his
singing assignments, maybe as he realizes that people expect 'newer'
or 'hip' voices, or to make way for his son.
I believe the wonder Hariharan-Alka duet from Guru - Aye Hairathe -
is based on Yaman. Definitely love that song!

For me:
1. Maya Maya -- never before heard fusion of Arabic and Gujarati folk.
Once you get past the accent of Tottler, its really catchy and
wonderful. Intrinsic layering including chorus harmonies make it even
more fun to listen again and again.
2. Ae hairathe - perfect singer selection (I
to name!), and soo many others are missing.
I am no so sure that Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Sadma, Qurbani or Hero
would fall in a masterpiece category!

I agree with all that you have said. Especially about the great music
by RDBurman (or for that matter, Salil Chaudry, Jaidev, SJ, LP, KA,
etc..).
However, I disagree with your premise that Among the current crop,
Rahman is the only composer who is doing good job. Yes, Rahman is
miles ahead
only for now, and will soon be public. If
