I spoke to Brent at Audio upgrades. Turns out that: a) you do need 2 oscillators; b) my modded unit was wrongly installed using the old clock for 44.1/88.2 and the new clock (which was a 44.1 multiple not a 48 multiple) for 48/96; c) this explains the fact that 48/96 did not work; d) it means

Back to the original theme- I am returning my touch to Audio upgrades. Brent (the owner) tells me that he does not think there is a missing 48kHz oscillator but I am going to send the Touch back to him to investigate. I am still haunted by the possibility that i may have messed up some setting

Yes, 48 or 96 not working means there is a HIGH probability that the 24.576 clock is either not working or the mux that selects between the two frequencies is not working. There have been some SB3 modders that replace the 11.2896 crystal and take out the 12.288 one, but they do tell you that

I checked the audioupgrades page and it looks like the mod replaces one of the crystals (presumably the 22.5792) with a low jitter clock and leaves the other one in place. That should still allow 48 and 96 to work. John S. -- JohnSwenson
