I went to Myers at about 8:45 this morning in the hope of seeing some loons fly
by. The first thing I noticed however was a hooting coming from across the
creek in Salt Point. It sounded just like a classic Northern Saw-whet Owl
except that the hoots were a fair bit longer. It only lasted about

The last few days have been relatively slow lake-watching from Myers and
other areas. Yesterday's rain did not drop anything particularly noteworthy
down in the spots I was able to check. Highlights yesterday were two male
LONG-TAILED DUCKS flying north past Myers and a DUNLIN on the spit.

The spit at Myers Point hosted a few shorebirds this evening, including an
adult Sanderling, an adult Semipalmated Plover, 8 juvenile Least
Sandpipers, Killdeer, and a Solitary Sandpiper in the creek. The lake level
is dramatically down from where it was a week or two ago and lots of nice
shoreline
I am reasonably confident that there are 14 first-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS off the tip of the spit at Myers Park (6 PM). There is also a RUDDY
TURNSTONE on one of the branches sticking out of the water.

This morning, Jeremy Collison and I were excited to see that Bob's
basic-plumage SANDERLINGS had reappeared on the beach at Myers Point after
they made their mysterious disappearance yesterday. We were even more

I've been visiting Myers Point occasionally in the mornings before work. I
haven't had anything rare so far, but I've had a few nice birds.
Last Friday in wind and sleet, including an early Lesser Yellowlegs
(subsequently seen by many over the weekend), Bank and Cliff swallows, and

This afternoon I stopped by Myers Point to find a good flock of 100+ Tree
Swallows off the marina and Ladoge area, along with at least two NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED and one CLIFF SWALLOW. Two gorgeous but very distant alternate
adult RED-NECKED GREBES were on the lake out to the northwest of the point.
A gorgeous pair of BLACK SCOTERS are sitting on the lake off the Myers
marina, also just visible from Ladoga. Five WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS are nearby.

spit an osprey approached and started hover-fishing Salmon Creek, pretty
low and close to us. At one point it started diving, but aborted, denying

This juvenile Black-crowned Night-heron may have been in the area for a few
days. On July 5, a woman on bicycle in this area mentioned to me that she saw a
strange small heron that was brown and had its neck tucked in which was being
attacked by crows. She knew it was not a cormorant or a Great
Yesterday evening at about 8:45 there was a juvenile Black-Crowned Night
Heron poking around on the Salt Point shore of the creek just about
where the grassy gravel bar in the creek begins (as you come upstream
from the lake). I watched it until it flew up into a cottonwood on the
Salt Point
The only notable birds from a quick stop at Myers just now were 13
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS on the spit, but it seems likely something else
could drop in over the course of the day.

storm a couple of years ago, I drove out there at first light this morning to
see what I could see. A lone Semipalmated Plover was foraging at the water's
edge. And picking through the hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls,
6 Greater Yellowlegs at 7 pm today at Myers, foraging around the gravel bar in

Nice post. The ruddy duck mimics are sleeping female Redheads. I noticed some
of them today, too. We saw no real ruddies in the millpond today. The wood duck
was in the outlet stream of the millpond that drains out under the entrance to

The only bird of interest on a gorgeous but quiet morning at Myers Point
today was a molting female-type RED-BREASTED MERGANSER off the point. It
swam over and sat on the rocks by the lighthouse for a few minutes, then

All six swallow species, including my first of year CLIFF, at Myers Point
right now, but not much else. Looks like Ken had a Forster's Tern here
earlier, but no sign of it or shorebirds now. Orchard Oriole singing from
Salt Point but moving as far as the marina quite often.

I spent a half hour at Myers this morning just after the rain began.
As I had hoped, there were a few good birds on the spit: 8 Bonaparte's
Gulls (still mainly in winter plumage) and a single Forster's Tern
(molting: dark cap coming in, still with white forehead; dark orange
bill w/black ti
Livia and I watched from Myers Point for a couple of hours this late
morning. We saw less than we had hoped: no Bonaparte's Gulls or Common
Terns and not many waterfowl moving either. Highlights were a NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW that stopped by the point briefly, a CASPIAN TERN that
was headed n
I stopped by Myers this afternoon at about 3:00. Not much to see at the
point (no pipits), but scoping what wasn't directly in the sun from the
beach at the Marina, I found
Northern Pintail (3)
Bufflehead (1)
Ring-necked Duck (15)
Hooded Merganser (5)
Common Merganser (2)
Common Goldeneye (~25)
I wasn't even sure if we'd go out at all today, but after a family
discussion weighing the possibilities, I got one taker for the proffered
"bird hard" option. So Tilden and I headed up the lake again late on
Saturday afternoon. Those three hours turned out to be the most satisfying
winter outing
I decided to make a quick trip to Myers this afternoon while running
errands in town. Birds of note were a drake Red-breasted Merganser
seen from the point and later from the marina, several American Pipits
on the gravel , a smattering of Northern Pintail and American Wigeon
from the Marina and a
I made a half hour visit to Myers mid morning. By far the most noteworthy
bird I found was a Peregrine Falcon sitting and preening on the snag across
Salmon Creek from the point.

I was at Myers Point for a couple hours this morning (7:20-9:40), and
although I didn't see anything particularly exciting, the difference in
waterfowl I saw compared to Ethan et al at the Loon Watch was interesting.
A fairly large flock of mixed diving ducks was on the lake straight off the
point

Our newly elected Lansing town board member Katrina Binkewicz has found
out that the town highway dept has been directed to do extensive cutting
on Salt Point. We are
Myers was pretty cold and dull this morning, with very few waterfowl
migrating. Lots of gulls were on the spit but nothing out of the ordinary
(although on Tuesday I had a surprising *4* 1st-cycle Lesser Black-backed
Gulls with the other gulls on the spit!) The highlight today was a very

Alberto joined me after Tim, Chris, & Jeff left around 9:30. He picked
out a calling Greater Yellowlegs that subsequently landed on the spit.
We had another fly-by flock of 18 Northern Pintails and and a mixed
flock of 5 Pintails and 4 American Wigeon. The Long-tailed Duck and
single Brant

Chris Wood and I were joined by Bob McGuire and later Jeff Gerbracht at the
Myers Point lighthouse this morning. The air was clear and viewing
conditions overall were excellent.
