Aluminium heads on a cast iron block?
Is that a bad idea?
I've got a beginning ticking sound i one of the valves so I'm
planning to either restor the heads or buying new
aluminium race prepped heads. I also want to be able to

I'm in a similar situation. The 66 SS I bought came

I agree with Clint and RJ. I had my 386 built by the local speed shop. The goal was to keep it a budget project and to keep the HP somewhere in the 350-400 range. Being able to use pump gas is critical if you want this to be a daily driver. I'd drop that compression ratio down to 9.5 if I were yo

Here it is! Ive got a 64 SS chevelle with a 327 350hp with a power glide. What would a guy do,either 700r4 or a 350 (with lock up 4th gear??)

You're welcome.
I also just found that you can get brand new GM alum bellhousings from
Ground Up http://www.ss396.com (2nd hand info, 3rd hand info to you).
And Ebay has several listings for bellhousings (which I did confirm,
and cheap too!).
Bear in mind there are 6 different part #s for GM

Mike,
Thanks!
I've not messed with too many manual trans cars and the truck six I have had a
bigger flywheel and clutch but I thought it had the same size opening in
bellhousing.
Maybe I should look for that.
Might be that behind a 250 they didn't bother with a big
housing.

It's my understanding that all trucks had the larger bearing retainer,
even the 6cyl engines.

Where have you been for the last twenty years,Pelle? Aluminum heads on a
cast iron block is hardly a new idea.
Aluminum driveshafts are used a lot these days. Both my 90 & 91 ZR-1's came
with them.

IMO the lock upTH350 would not give you the OD gear
ratio and if MPG is the main goal and lower cruzzinf RPM's the TH700R4 or
TH200R4 is the way to go..
I put on in my 65 elky and it's Great and just had

Pelle, Volvo & Saab have had aluminum heads since the early 70's. It is
actually a good idea, less weight, better heat dissipation, easily
repaired. The only downside is the cost, and that's gone
Larry,I could see building that engine you
have,,especially if the date codes are pretty close. Just make sure that if you
decide to change the cam, that you use a cam designed for a 65-66
BBC.
To the best of my knowledge,no one sells a 396" BBC
crate engine.

My new lower a-arms were shipped today and are supposed to be delivered
Thursday morning. Air Ride told us that with their lowers and Shockwaves
that I should be able to lower the car, without air,to within 1 1/2" to 2"
from the ground to the crossmember. That'll work.

Just tossing this out there as I am not familiar with aluminum heads on a
big block, but I have had issues on smaller engines with the head warping.
Happened 3 times in 75K miles on a 1.7 Volkswagen engine (actually still
have the engine). Got to the point when I could do that job with my eyes

Ask them if they're trying to say you're fat.

Aluminum heads are fine. The ticking could be a lifter going bad, a rocker
that is getting loose, a worn lobe on the cam (causing the rocker to be
loose), a bent valve or pushrod (again causing the rocker to be loose), and
more. Before you swap out heads, you need some more diagnostic work to see
Thanks for your cam advise Clint. All I got was the
block, heads and crank, so I will be buying a cam along with just about
everything else. I'm looking forward to building this engine myself. As to
crate 396's, I've found four new GM crates listed in the new Scoggin-Dickey

I wonder what the difference is in the control arms? I have stock control arms(top and bottom), but I have air bags, not Air Ride though. Mine is custom, the dual pumpkin type. I have 2" drop spindles, but I can lay my cross member on the ground. Maybe the different years (mines a 66) has somethin
I'd also advise you to
look at the 200R4. It can be built up to be as strong as you need and it
should basically bolt in. I have a 700R4 and I like it, but I needed to
shorten the driveshaft and fabricate the rear transmission mount. You will
need a kit (cheap) to get the torque converter

The shock mount on the Air Ride LCA's has a dropped
center. My GW lowers have a flat shock mount.
If I switched to drop spindles,I would have to use
G-body brakes,,a step backwards from my present set-up.
Are your shocks and air bags separate
units?
Clint HooperH&H Custom,owner1969 El Camino
Yes, they are seperate. The shock was moved, mounts to the lower a-arm and there is a little bracket that holds it up by the frame. -Original Message-From: Clint Hooper <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Tue, 10 May 2005 20:01:09 -0500Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Air R

NO NO--43/14=3.07142857142Just happened to be by my calculator. This
is the same ratio in my car. Everyone calls them 3.08's but they're really
3.07's. The 3.08 has a 40 tooth ring & 13 tooth pinion which is

1965-66 BBC cams must have a grooved rear bearing
journal for correct oiling. 1967 and later BBC's didn't require this but it's
mandatory for the 65-66 model BB engines.

I would go with the 700r4 . You don't need a
computer there is a kit to hook up the electrical . You can still us your
crossmember just slide it back and rebolt it you may have to drill new back

WELL FINALLY, MY 69 GOES INTO THE PAINT SHOP NEXT WEEK, AFTER ONE LONG YEAR AT THE BODY SHOP. I ASKED THE PAINTER IF HE CAN APPLY THE STRIPES ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR (69 SS STRIPES)
AND THEN CLEAR THEM. HE WANTS TO PAINT THE STRIPES IN RATHER THEN STICK THEM ON.
WHERE CAN I GET THE CORRECT SPECS
