For a 36 you probably have a Unit 1, possibly a Unit 1.5.
MKIII's have a black metal cover surrounding the drum, screws to hold the
extrusions together.
Did you call Harken directly? Excellent customer support from my
experience.

I'm impressed. Very nice solution.
My buddy and I have encountered the same issue a couple times. Being
Harken installers, we usually disassembled the furler and reinstalled with
spare parts we happen to keep around for just such a purpose.

Russ, I think the wire is just coming unlaid. Looks like it may have been
twisted against the lay somehow.

In order for the wire to unlay like that it will need to grow
shorter, pin-to-pin, a slight amount.
My forestay looked similar to that when I replaced the gang 5 years
ago. It had two broken strands hiding under a Harken Mark I furler.
