How do include PPP support in the kernel when I compile? I have
been using 'make config' and 'make menu config' to configure the kernel and
even though I thought I have been choosing ppp support under networking I
am still without.
This whole issue started after I was compiling to

i could not possibly agree more with Eric on this one. People are so
spoon-fed on GUIs that tell you how to do everything. When you use something
like Linux you need basic computer knowledge or you learn the hard way. It
isn't "easy" but it's fun once you get used to it.

Another place to find that elusive package is by searching through the
available package database in /var/lib/dpkg/available with something like
less -i
I use that a lot. You may have to tweak your string a bit or show
patience when searching, because some words are used a lot.

You seem to have a PCMCIA problem. After I wrote a follow up 10
minutes ago I searched where I store my old computer stuff and found a
Megahertz XJ1144. I tested it on an old notebook running Linux 2.2.9
and the PCMCIA card services and modules version 3.0.9 and did not
have a problem at all

My new box has an automatic shut-off capability, i.e. in ms-windows
you make shutdown and the box shuts itself off (without the need of
pressing the button).

Xemacs certainly doesnt need X. It used to be called Lucid Emacs (no
reference to X). The version in the Debian debs is compliled with X
support so if you launch it in X it will run as an X app but if you
start it in a real console it will run fine or in an Xterminal do
Xemacs -nw and it will stay

for what it's worth after having massive problems with netscape being stable
after my upgrade to communicator 4.6 i downloaded the old debian 451
packages from a slow to update debian mirror and it's working perfectly.
