I'll "third" that! What I've heard is that electrolytics fail more rapidly
when they don't regularly see voltage. Hence a NOS part is likely
as bad if not worse than what you started with. Similarly it's a good
idea to bring up them old radios every few months to condition the
caps. We all wan

George, Your comment is very true for solid state and of course even more so on the older vintage tube gear. One short story I'll share that confirms your concerns about caps: I had recently replaced a two-section can in my AC-4 w

Just consider how hard it is going to be in a few years to get a
replacement custom programmed microprocessor chip for
the whizbang modern radio. Even if you can find the right
chip, there is no way to get it programmed. Finding even the
"rare" discrete components for the Drakes will be a piece

Hi Sterling and allthe other Drakesters -- All the other posts represent
my feelings exactly. I have owned 4, 3 at present.1 mobile, 1 on op
desk. 1/2 of power switch (ac) died on #396. I put ac on dc half, dc
leads connected together. Now I switch power on with power strip to save
the remaining h

Considering the high cost of new equipment and the service reputation of
some Japanese companies I will just keep using the Drakes. There are no
guarentees that anything you buy new will be serviced by the the
manufacturer in 5 years or that parts will be available anyway. Ebay aside

then you'll have to make room. I bet you could make a nice little bundle
just by selling the RV-75 alone.

I'm going to continue to use my 7 line as my main rig.
Heck, compared to other radios in my stable, it's a modern one!

Hello Sterling..
Interesting thought.. I think all of us "boatanchor" types have considered this..
The conclusion I have come to personally is to keep my Collins, Drake, and other
vintage stuff, even with the thought in mind of picking up a "junker" as a parts donor
unit for each of them.. Bu
