For me, 1 KHz bandpass for voice is unreadable. If the filter is very, very bad and the signal very strong, enough stuff outside of the 1 kHz bandpass might slip through to make it intelligible, but it's not as readable as a wider bandwidth along with the increased noise the wider bandwidth
