Hi Fred,
The situation you are describing (first touch of the paddle) is an indicator
that the K3 TX Gain might need to be touched up on one or more bands. Do the

fine tune instructions on the top of page 62 in the K3
Just guessing here, some elucidation on why you want to remote would be
helpful.
There are some number of reasons to run the KPA and KAT (near where the
coax comes into the house?) in the basement. One is not having a long
ground attached to the amplifier, putting RF on a lot more of the house.
CORRECTION:
I asked a question about running the K3 in my 2nd floor shack and putting the
amp and tuner in the basement, HOWEVER, I didn't catch my typo in the original

I want to put the KAT 500 and KPA 500 in the basement and have the K3 in the
2nd floor shack.
How can I do this?
John,
I guess my question is why would you want to? You're going to have coax
loss either way, and while you might get some benefit in having the
tuner and amp closer to the antenna, I'm not sure it'd be worth not
having the $2200 amp and $600 tuner in the shack.

A thank you to the Elecraft team for the excellent engineering and
performance delivered in the KPA500.
Team VE2DXY contest DXpedition from zone 2 is using a KPA500 in the CQWW SSB
contest with absolutely flawless performance from this fine amplifier.
Been hammering it hard for more than 8 hours
Well after a month I finally opened the box and got the manuals out in
anticipation of starting to assemble the kit. Looks straight forward and easy
to assemble.
However one thing did strike me as odd in the assembly. It was the lack of any
heat sink compound on the IC's on the Power Supply
Hi Bob,
There is an insulating, heat conductive, pad on the LM317 fan control, the
device closest to the rear panel. The other two do not dissipate enough
power to require heatsink compound. However, if it makes you more
comfortable, it will do no harm.

Noted that my new amp is making a fairly loud humming noise when not under
load, and a much louder hum when under full power. New thing, have not heard
this before, power output still good, but noise is really concerning. Removed
top, nothing loose, should I try retorting the xformer hardware
Check the other case screws, particularly the ones holding the left side
panel (the panel with the feet closest to the transformer). Unlike the K3,
the KPA500 uses steel panels for greater strength to support the
transformer. They, of course, want to vibrate from the magnetic field
leakage around
My question is
Would it be easy to take out the transformer of an assembled amplifier? It is
too heavy to hand carry on a flight so I would like to ship the transformer on
its own.

Hi,
My KPA-500 watt meter and my Palstar watt meter read about the same at the
higher power readings. But at the 100 watt and lower ranges there is a
significant difference. My question is which is the more correct reading at the
lower ranges, the Elecraft or Palstar. If I want to calibrate
