If it's KDE under Control Center (kde not MDK) Look and Feel -- Icons
choose the Advanced tab in the window to the left you'll see 5 icon
choices the first one Desktop/File Manager is the one you want to
highlight, then use the button to the right to choose your size.

Thanks for that, that would explain the size as my memory is 512mb. I
don't use the / directory much, but it has become 100%, and the
/proc/kcore file looked the likely culprit. I will have to look now for
the real perpetrator.
