deletes the ip adress of eth0 if the cable is unplugged and this is the
reason for an jboss error. I need a real static ip adress on eth0. All

hype about Mandrake was. I like what I see with one exception. With Suse my

I was to play with MTU ethernet parameter in my LAN to see if I can get
any speed improvement and found out that I can't get it more than
1500!!! Here is command and error:

You cant do that it would be like having two nics on a network with the same
ip's but you can use two nic's and assign seperate ip's to each one. eth0 and
eth0:0
If its mor throughput you want try checking to see if your runing full
duplex. You can allways upgrade to fiber or gig ethernet

Two NICs would give you eth0 and eth1. In Mandrake you can assign two
or more data streams (IPs) to the one NIC

"route" too... and a clue as to the IP address used in the other OS...
Of course, if ifconfig gives no eth0 output, try "ifconfig eth0" to be sure.

Take a look at the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and see if there's
anything that

Try to bring it up:

these two even pinging each other. The ping of each other IP addresses
simply hangs with out even timing out.

turned off loads of stuff on his system "to make it boot faster"... I don't
recall exactly what was the main culprit; but even the loopback interface was
disabled.
Try "strace ping ..." and see if that gives any clues.

I've played with 2.4 kernels before and seen this problem, but decided to
have a proper go with one. It's working great except that when I put the
computer into power saving mode (all set up nicely, apmd runs OK) the
ethernet fails. I'm using the tulip driver with a macronix card, on a MS
