Amen! here's one of my favourite quotes:
Horses don't need private stalls; they need other horses.

Hobble train all your horses, even if you never intend to use them
on the trail.
Hey Eric, great thoughts! Ditto on hobbles from over here...just wondering
though, how do you keep your Fjord from fluffing up if it is on permanent

Also to add that short grass length due to over grazing can cause the grass to
be stressed and sugar levels high.
My Henry will self regulate on 24/7 turn out as well. Perhaps those that
are out all the time are better self-regulators,

That's a wonderful quote! We just added 2 horses to our herd of 2
fjords. Friends moved in w/their QH's. It's been very interesting to
see how my girls have reacted to having a real herd versus just me.
I'll admit it broke my

In my opinion, stabling a horse is the worst thing you can do to them.
The worst thing. Really? The worst?
What about letting them eat so much that they become obese and their
feet -- and any hope of an athletic future -- are

My basic question that I meant to ask wasdo people worry about their
horses getting struck by lightning if they are turned out during
thunderstorms, with or without a run-in shelter? I wonder if I am being
overly cautious

It depends. I do worry if the horse has shoes on, is in a big high open
pasture with nothing

I don't leave mine out in any kind of rain or storms. But mine are stalled at
night, I have one that doesn't like the skeeters. Mine are use to this, they
have their regular routine/schedule. Out early a.m. (if weather permits) and

I think the best routine depends on where you live, what you have available and
are able to provide and the individual horse and how many horses someone has.
In a perfect world, I think it would be best for most horses to stay outside

Curiously I have found my fjords to be the most trim when they are out on
not-so-lush pasture 12 hours per day (but I limit their time on spring
grass). They move a LOT in a big pasture. I imagine horses, like people,

There are definitely worse things than not being turned out 24/7 but I agree

Hi Melinda,
My 4 are out 24-7 with run ins. I used to put them in during lightening storms
until a friend told me that her barn had been struck by lightening and caught
fire. Her animals would have died if they'd been in.
So, unless

Define turnout! I consider my Fjords turned out 24/7 because the four are
together in a very large dry paddock as I only have a small one acre pasture
and
a smaller paddock with a little grass. They wander around together in the dry
paddock, head
