did you try resetting the power manager? unfortunately my experience with lombards (or any other pre-ibook G3) is limited to basically what i read here, i wouldnt be able to tell you exactly /how/ to do this, but i assume its just the small reset button that you'd find inside the little port-co

Under Network in System Preferences, on the Modem tab, you can control whether the modem volume is on or off. The "sound" radio button, I believe. BTW... It's impossible for your modem speaker to be bad. It doesn't exist. AFAIK, all modem sound is piped through the system's regular sound system,
