There is a new Firewire 800 card out by Lacie. However it uses a separate power supply because it is 800, and cannot be supplied with enough power from the host computer, as I understand. Check it out. However, it is not the 800 speed is compromised by the seek time of your peripheral device.

I have this card on a g3 wall street and run it successfully on OS( and 10.1 and 10.2 now. You should get an image of a card in the menu bar under OS10.2, but not 10.1 In OS9 an image of the card appears on the desktop. In OS 9 there are two extensions which need to be switched on for firewire.
