I believe this is called G5 thermal runaway when the fans go full blast. It's not related to sleep or network AFAIK. Some people have said Norton software is often responsible, so if you have anything from Norton, uninstall it. You can also try resetting the PMU:

I'm having a problem that sounds pretty similar. Occasionally while sleeping, my G5's fan(s) (I can't tell from outside which ones) start screaming away at full speed. When this happens, though, the system is also (apparently) still sleeping but won't wake up. Nothing goes into any of the log files
