Actually you don't need approval to mark previously excluded messages as
translatable. At least from i18n guys.

I think if it's not intended to be translated then it shouldn't be put
in translation files at all (like HTML tags, gconf key names etc.)
Anyway I'm interested in official GNOME position too.

Recently one of Gnome localizers, Andika Triwidada, asked in gnome-i18n
if we should really translate legal notices found in Gnome software

We could possibly put both English and localized texts in About dialog.
Then we should make sure About dialog still looks ok and English locale
users don't see two identical texts there.

I've heard that gtkhtml is supposed to be obsolete and replaced by
webkit engine. Anyway, it's still shown in Damned Lies as part of GNOME
3.2 release (Desktop section). Which modules are the primary users of
this library? Epiphany seems to be migrated to webkit already (at least

we have 'reduced' translation files available for some modules in Damned
Lies; it's really a major progress in the right direction. At the same
time, some modules still have schema messages unfiltered, or don't have
reduced file version at all though lots of schema messages in there. I

in GNOME 3.4 release-notes, some improvements in sound-juicer are
mentioned [1]. Though this module is not listed as part of official 3.4
release set [2].
Doesn't it indicate that it should be moved to official release set,
adding string freeze/release date requirements for this module?

I think it doesn't fix the problem. If these strings are to be shown to
users, then they should be translatable. But then you need to request a
string freeze break.
So you have two options:
- freeze break;
- completely remove new strings from the code.

I see that GNOME 3.4 module set has a new member (rygel). But I don't

Basically, this is because those translations has lots of serious flaws.
They are made with old orthography, has plenty of errors and typos, use
terms unknown to most users. The effect of such translations being in place
is that users just switch to other locales which at least don't break

I propose not to do it for languages with decent level of translation
for mutter. Personally, I'm not happy when any external source modifies
translation files without explicit request. But for languages with no
translation for mutter, I think it's worth doing.
