For transfers, I put both dates in the description, and start it at the from date for ease of reconciling that account, then move it to the to date for ease in reconciling that account.  I have not tried that for checks, but might start them when cleared and then move them to when written.

David, AFAIK the reconcile "R" column has three settings ,"n","c","y". If you manually record a transaction it should be set at "n". The "c" setting indicates that a transaction has been cleared and can be set to this when for example the money either appears in your account or when it has been
