Thanks DH, My reply was slightly misunderstood.
I see it below, I left out some commas.
Any old PCI MB will take an UltraATA controller card and run that drive.
BUT --- WITH the right OS AND card drivers.
The problems with the OS I referred to was finding a card chipset driver
for the OS
I admit I have not followed this thread,
but unless I'm missing something,
it seems to boil down to port 25 blocking. (IMHO)
I never have THAT problem and most of my e-mail is
sent to all different hosting services and THEIR personal servers
on higher port numbers. I send NO e-mail through my ISP
Hi Rick,
I think you're right--I at least don't disagree with anything you
said :) I'm glad my current ISP does not block port 25 anymore. My
last two--Cox and SBC--did.
Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but I was just saying that if
you're connected to the internet via Cox, you can
I see where you were coming from with that now Rick. Personally the Maxtor branded
Promise ATA133 controller+driver under Win2K or XP gave me no lasting issues but
that's about 5 years ago...
Onto Linux: Given CodeWeavers little publicity stunt, I'm again seriously looking at
booting my linux
Bought my son a iPod to find out does not play with windows media player,
unless I use itunes sw or buy a plug in.

Thanks

Often the test of courage is not to die but to live.
Welcome to the wonderful world of DRM and competing monopolies. You only
solution is to live in Apple's world (ie use iTunes) or go with another
program (like Poddox http://www.poddox.com/). But either way I'm pretty
sure you can't use windows media player, and positive that if you buy
anything
I don't get why people hate on iTunes so much. The interface is dead
easy to use and the software works great. If you don't want to buy media
with Apple DRM then either buy DRM free stuff from iTunes or buy from
Amazon. When you buy from Amazon it automatically ends up in your iTunes
library.
I use iTunes with my iPhone and don't consider it that bad, as long as you
play in Apple's universe. And microsoft is just as bad with the Zune and
the whole PlaysForSure crap.
iTunes has gotten worse and more bloated over the years. And Apple is
adopting some microsoft tactics like
thanks, should of done homework first.
did find some sw that claim to allow sync with ipod but itunes is a free dl ( I
think ) ? Will itunes allow me to use my existing library of mp3's ?
thanks again.
DRM
bummer.
Never expected this. Have a customer box with itunes installed, may hook up to
Yep. iTunes is good with mp3s and most other non-DRM music formats (not
sure about FLAC). But it won't work with DRM'd wma files.
My collection is almost 100% mp3s and I use iTunes, works pretty well for
me.

I mean, why would I not care to play in Apple's universe? I have an
iPhone, the iTunes software plays nice with it. It's easy to use. Does a
damn good job of organizing my media, makes tagging very easy, makes
ripping a CD very easy, and generally is so simple even my wife and her
parents can
Is the problem that you already had your library in Windows Media
player? Because Media Monkey would have worked fine for syncing your
ipod and is free.
